Yesterday, Saturday, we took a ride on Rt6, plan was to hit some wineries and breweries. And have dinner at Tavern on the James, after stopping at James River Brewery. Well we made it to the Tavern, got seated with no issues. Waitress came and took our drink order, went fairly well, but it really looked like she was the only Waitress there, taking care of the whole bar area. Only 1 bartender, and he was delivering all drinks to all tables.....I guess what I am trying to say, there was not enough help, and this was normal dinner time. Bartender and the 1 Waitress had their hands full. So with that said everything was very slow. Doubt we will be going back. read more

First timers here. We were exploring Scottsville and found this place in town. We got a good vibe when we walked in. We sat near the bar area. Service was excellent. We split a Club sandwich. The staff were kind enough to plate it separately with a handsome portion of fries for both of us. The sandwich and fries were excellent. We both had a glass of wine with lunch. This place got busy really fast and I think rightfully so. Went there for lunch with a friend, got the Reuben per server's recommendation and it was delicious. Generous amount of in-house slow cooked beef, sauerkraut on a beautiful marble bread, perfect cheese. The sandwich was very tasty and filling. The choice of sides were fries or house made chips, tried both, both were very good, though I got pork rinds for an up-charge and they were the best ever. Also tried the steamed shrimp appetizer, simple but yet perfectly cooked and so good. Our server was wonderful, very helpful and attentive. Definitely will be back! read more

Just go for the dang Reuben. Nice spot in downtown Scottsville. Hit it for Sunday brunch. Nice atmosphere. Plenty of regulars- always a good sign. Service was friendly but could've been more attentive. In any case, I'll make a point to try it again when I'm in Scottsville. read more

Stopped here for dinner today. There were 6 in our party. We were initially seated in the bar area and had to move because the air conditioning was blasting on us. Once we moved, the server stopped by to take our drinks order which took a bit longer than it should. When it came to ordering, I asked the server to come back to me as I hadn't made up my mind. After everyone else gave her their order, I had to stop her from leaving so I could tell her what I wanted. I told her that I wanted a french dip sandwich. The orders took forever to be served (the place was not busy) and came out one or two at a time. Instead of a french dip the server thought I said french onion soup. I was the last one to get my food. When I tasted the food, I felt like I was eating a salt lick. Very Salty!!! I only ate half of the sandwich and took the rest home. I will probably end up throwing it out. It has been 3 hours since I ate, and I still have a salty taste in my mouth!! Bad service and bad food! I love my little hometown and try to support local. But The Tavern on the James is not making it easy. For years I've dined there, typically getting my preferred dinner meal, "The River Boat" ( Tavern ground round steak nestled in Merlot mashed potatoes, melted swiss cheese and topped with provolone cheese, mushroom and onion sauce) it used to be served on a full dinner plate with an ample portion. Last night, it was served on a dessert plate with maybe 1/2 a scoop of potatoes, I had to play hide and seek for the burger, for $19, an extra $2.50 for a toasted sub roll. At those prices and portion sizes, it's worth the drive to Charlottesville, 5th Street Station is only 10 minutes difference. read more

We were very disappointed in the food we ordered. We both got the Reuben per the waitresses recommendation. Had a difficult time finding any sign of thousand Island dressing or sauerkraut. The meat was chopped up like a cheese steak with very little flavor. The worst part was that the marble rye bread was soggy. A Reuben is supposed to be grilled like a grilled cheese sandwich. All the bread had was burnt char marks on it. The French fries were just okay but they put them on top of the pickle, so we had to try and eat a limpy warm pickle. We will never return back to this restaurant. Not everything was a negative tho, the wait staff was so friendly and the atmosphere is very comfortable, relaxing and welcoming. While staying in Scottsville, we checked out the James on the tavern for dinner Thursday night. The place was pretty crowded, especially on the patio where they had live music. We had dinner in the bar/lounge area. They have a large selection of beer on the tap and a full cocktail menu. The food menu is pretty large and reasonably priced, including several specials. When we arrived we were met with very friendly and curtious staff. They took our orders for drinks and appetizers. Constantly checked to fill our drinks. Once we ordered it took a little while to get our food. But " if you want fast food go to a fast food restaurant. ( Wendy's, , mickie Ds, or Bk). The food arrived . Nestled on a corner of Downtown Scottsville, near Charlottesville, this restaurant has a stellar reputation as THE place to go if you are anywhere NEAR Scottsville. It does not disappoint! 3 ambiance to choose from: quasi sports bar area, dining area (it's more quiet) or outside. Scrumptious food served hot and without a long wait by very friendly staff. Ambiance was nice. The restaurant seemed clean and on theme with the tavern. Service was good; a little slow. Took a while to be greeted and we weren't checked on a whole lot. Drinks went empty fast. The food was extremely disappointing. I ordered the avocado blt. There wasn't a single strip of bacon on the sandwich, only oil covered bits most likely scooped from the bottom of a warmer. The bread was dry and the lettuce had turned brown from sitting in the window a bit too long. Overall just a bad sandwich, luckily I was hungry so I was happy to finish my meal. I got to try a bit of the fish and chips and the Reuben, those turned out pretty good. I'd stop here again, but I will not go near the blt again. read more

Writing an update to last years review to say: their fish and chips is excellent, probably the best I've had stateside for the best value; big filet of juicy, flaky, not greasy flounder with a batter that is not overly bready, just a nice crisp casing for the white fish. Also service was better and more prompt on this visit, even for a busy saturday night, and they've changed the menu to add some variety. Good stuff. read more

We drove an hour an half to this place. We arrived at 1:30 PM on Sunday October 5th. Took a while for someone to take our drink order. Which was ice tea. We ordered after our drinks were brought to us. I will say order in at 1:45 PM. We waited and we waited. Ask for refills on drinks. We our refills came, I asked so how long till the food order arrives. I was told really soon. While waiting we heard the waitress state that she was training two other people. Ok, I am good with this. The couple that sat down way after us was served before us. Their order wasn't what was ordered. Food final arrives at 2:35 PM. I ordered a French dip roast beef, my husband ordered a hamburger. That was all our order was. My French dip was put in front of and I asked is this my order and she stated yes, the French dip. The French was Philly chopped meat. Not what the menu stated. I go to eat a French fry. The fries, not cooked cold and soggy. I ask for another batch of fries. I tried my French dip and the meat was 50 percent grizzly and completely dried out. I didn't eat it. I ate a few cooked fries from the basket of new fries. This was all I could find in the basket that was actually cooked. Horrible food. Do not recommend this place. read more

I was going to leave this place 1 star but the manager and the chefs saved the day! My family and I stopped here on our way back home from a long road trip. It was family friendly and looked like the food would be quick. We ordered a couple burgers and chicken nuggets for the kids. The food took almost an hour to come out. I also ordered a French onion soup which never came out for some reason. The waitress offered to bring it out after I already got my burger but I declined as I prefer to have soup, salad or apps before my main course, not after. When we walked in, the manager was working the front of the house. It was my wife's birthday so I snuck away to let the manager know so he can order the Muddy River cake after our food. Not 5 minutes after I have this conversation with him, the waitress walks straight up to my wife and informs her that her 'surprise' birthday cake will be out after the food!!! I am still confused why someone would do that! Luckily the food was REALLY good! The cake, the burgers, everything! Also, the manager apologized and bought the desert for us which was really nice. I was going to leave 1 star because of how long the food took, the soup thing, and the ruined surprise but I feel like I can't do that since the food was actually really good and the manager tried his best to make it right. read more

Showed up a little late for dinner, 8:45pm (15 minutes until closing) on a Thursday evening. I know this is not a great habit that patrons should exhibit, but choices were very limited where we were. They didn't have a problem with us coming in for a late dinner. The fish and chips was great. Hate to order fish and chips and have them bring out a couple of fish triangles with 1/4" greasy breading. However, we were pleasantly surprised when a large slab of white fish with light breading comes out. It was perfectly prepared and tasty. Good slaw and fries also. Only downside was they had already closed the "non-obnoxious" side of the building, which left open only the tavern side where extremely loud and tone deaf karaoke was happening. Not judging, because I can't carry a tune either, merely an observation. I still give them a five star because we chose to eat at a bar where people were letting off steam. My only recommendation is that the establishment waits until the last patron leaves to shut down and clean up the quieter side of the building. Even if everyone is in the bar. This restaurant has greatly improved. We went there late Sunday afternoon for an early dinner with friends. The service was timely and the food was great and at a very reasonable price. We had plenty to take home for lunch the next day. I ordered a cocktail and the bartender came over to make sure it was to my liking. We will definitely go back in the future. read more

And tonight one of their employees said the F word very loudly and my family and the whole dining room heard it. I Had the Blended beef burger for lunch and it was one of the finest burgers i've had in many many years, the shoestring fries on the other hand need changing to larger type fries. Popped in here while running errands. Servers are very nice and service was not the fastest but it was a weekend. There's a bar area with TVs and games and a separate dining area indoors and outdoors so you have options for your experience. The prices seemed a little steep for the area and the food quality. Got the veggie burger which was fine and came with some very underripe avocado. Husband enjoyed his Reuben, but again we thought prices were a little steep for what we got. The food was horrendous and my husband got into a verbal altercation with the owners daughter about comping us for chicken wings. She called the police on us despite us having paid and tipped. But back to it, we ordered the fish and chips and wings. The wings were very dry and drowned in BBQ sauce. The fish was just undercooked, imagine little white bubbles of fish juice and we picked around it. The shoestring fries were cold and hard. We ate none of those. Overall it was a very disappointing meal for our fifth anniversary! This is the third time eating there and I was never happy with one meal I've had and the same experience for my husband. People who arrived before us walked out. Two people ordered the ribs, which only come in full rack. It looked gross. The wedge potatoes were lost under the meat. The halves were stacked, extremely fatty, having to pick out the fat to get to the meat. One of us ordered the scallops, which were lukewarm. One of us ordered the reuben sandwich. Again the meat was too fatty, having to pick out the fat, bread was soggy, couldn't find the sauerkraut. The fries were good, that's it. An expensive disappointment. The most ridiculous menu I've seen in a very long time. Cannot imagine the mentality of a restaurant owner that charges bizarre extra prices for everything. "Build your own burger" is approximately $15 for a patty and bun. They are generous to not charge for the piece of lettuce and slice of tomato. However, cheese or anything else is another story. Add cheddar for $2.77, yes $2.77, American cheese gets a slight discount coming in at $1.89! So add cheddar and your burger is now $18 crazy The kicker is they have a specialty burger called the James. It comes with American cheese and bacon. $16.89. BUT don't ask for provolone or Swiss or cheddar or your burger is now $20. What about that $1.89 slice of American cheese that's being replaced? Do they credit you back for what you're not getting? No. They charge you. So you'll pay for the American cheese you've asked to be replaced with the $2.77 slice of cheddar. How tight are they? Must be a servers nightmare with all these odd priced extras for every little thing. It's just ridiculous. The food is already high priced but not worth it. What a shame. Keep your "extras", won't be back. It took 45 minutes for a burger, no cheese, to be ready. Insult to injury after 45 min it came out over cooked (asked for medium), dry and absolutely no flavor like ground beef cooked too long on too high heat. Definitely won't recommend this place. No excuse for how slow it was. When I came in there were only 5 tables and they had their food. Run don't walk away from here as fast as you can. Thank me later. read more

We were just passing through Scottsville and decided to stop at a brewery and then catch dinner. I wanted mac and cheese, which had pepperoni and ham, but as a vegetarian they made it special for me without meat AND without using the chicken broth. I love that they went the extra mile! Terrible customer service and might I even say racist. I went with my Asian and Indian American friends, the crowd seemed aghast that any ethnic customers were in the restaurant. It's a very "White" attitude in the restaurant and it made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Even the servers and waiters didn't come check on us after we ordered our food. If I could give this zero stars I would. Let me start off by saying the food was fine, but our service was an all time worst dining experience. We ordered an appetizer, never showed up, ordered soup, never showed up. Then 2 in our party ordered the country fried steak special. It showed up, but it was fried chicken. We went 30 minutes in between our drink order and us having to ask a manager where our drinks were.
