Absolutely incredible sandwich lunch place. Incredible bakery and delicious food on all fronts.

My husband and I returned for lunch today and, as always, enjoyed it very much. I had the egg salad sandwich and he had the cup of soup and half sandwich (crispy chisken) combo. Both were excellent, we like the atmosphere there, and the service is pleasant. We were impressed by the freshness of the ingredients, lovely bread, homemade potato chips, and the seasoning of the soup (today it was chicken rice). We are ex-New Yorkers and commented that if RC were there, it would be packed all the time. We arrived shortly after noon (on a Friday) and got seated right away. The Railway Cafe is one of many things that we appreciate about Winsted! We'll return soon. read more

Went for breakfast with a friend and was bowled over by the place! Wonderful setting, great service and delicious food. I had the Conductor's skillet and my friend the Berry waffle with cream. OMG her plate was STACKED! My bowl had delicious applewood bacon and I went with scrambled eggs on top and rye toast...amazing! Would definitely take the drive to eat there again. read more

"I'm sittin' in the railway station Got a ticket to my destination" (Simon and Garfunkel) Our server told us The Railway Cafe building was the oldest surviving single family structure in town. Over the years the building transitioned into commercial use and was office buildings and a Mexican Restaurant among other tenants. The Railway Cafe has now occupied that space for years, and our first visit there was very favorable, if not excellent. They are open Wednesday to Sunday for breakfast and lunch and our Thursday morning breakfast visit could not have gone any better. Coffee came out fast, and we both commented how good it was. I ordered a Green Caboose Skillet Bowl ($12) with two over medium eggs over a delicious layer of hash browns, onions, peppers, cherry tomatoes, spinach and pepper jack cheese, plus two slices of multi grain toast. It was delicious and very filling. My wife went for a bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll ($7.50) and she enjoyed hers as well. Both breakfasts came with a mini fruit garnish of an orange slice and half a strawberry. We had read that Railway Cafe is famous for the baked goods in general and their cinnamon buns in particular, so of course we ordered one to go. We shared half of it last night, and I gotta tell you that just 1/4 of that big gooey bun will satisfy your sweet tooth. It was terrific. The ambience there is very nice with train decor throughout. I sure got the feeling that the clientele there are regulars because I saw two exiting couples get goodbye hugs from their servers. So go and enjoy a lovely breakfast in a very welcoming spot. read more

First Timers to the Railway Cafe in Winsted, it had been on our radar for sometime, but we finally made it there this morning. A bit of wait to get a table, but it was mid-morning on a Sunday also. Cafe is cute, loved the ambience, the large windows looking out onto RT44 and the skylights were a very nice touch. The place is a bit noisy though, when filled with patrons. We both ordered off the Specials Menu, I had the Salted Caramel Apple Belgian Waffle, and my wife went with Corned Beef Hash and Eggs. We also ordered a Cinnamon Bun to go. I thought the presentation of my meal was very nice, but the waffle itself lacked much flavor, was bland. I really can't recall tasting any salted caramel either. I took a bite of my wife's corned beef hash, it was the best hash I've ever tasted. We quickly switched meals. But my wife also thought the Belgian Waffle breakfast was lackluster. Also, the portion size of both our breakfasts was a bit on the diminutive side. We had the cinnamon bun later in the day, it was alright. All in all, with the exception of corned beef hash, we felt our breakfasts this morning at the Railway Cafe were fairly average. For $34 (before tip), I kinda expected a bit more. read more

I had the Green Caboose and it was excellent. Tons of veggies and great flavoring. The rye toast was incredible ! Two other members of my party had the Green Caboose and they both enjoyed it as well. Avocado toast was tasty and had beautiful presentation. Great place to eat in Winsted. read more

Wonderful cute little cafe ! We were in town for the first the time from out of the area and this was such a gem to find ! The young man who waited on us was wonderful ! Unfortunately did not get his name but he was so personable and helpful! The coffee was very good and I'm fussy, the BLT was great ! The Railway Cafe is excellent! We love supporting local small businesses. The building Is charming and the ambiance is awesome. The waitstaff is so personable & friendly. My husband & I ordered off the specials menu & ended up getting the Turkey Cranberry Melt which was absolutely delicious (sweet & savory) as well as their chips! We also tried the strawberry lemonade which was made with fresh strawberries & lemons - a perfect combo that was so refreshing!! We will definitely be back to try breakfast & their ice cream shop. The food here is amazing. I had the cinnamon bun which was warm, soft, and gooey! So good! I also had a bowl with peppers onion spinach hash brown cheese eggs.... Very filling and tasty. Historically charming hidden gem! We aren't typically out in this area and have never been. We were attracted to its character and assortment of breakfast items, so we decided to try it. Parking is on the road, but the 2 hour parking gives you plenty of time. Staff were very friendly, except for one - we didn't know what the seating situation was, and one of the waiters thought they were koi and wouldn't be overheard ranting about us, using some choice language. Thankfully we didn't have her as a waitress and instead had an extremely friendly and attentive waiter that we went without nothing with. The food was amazing! Best waffles I've ever had. Home fries, eggs, toast, etc. were also praised by our friends. Environment was friendly and homie; a lot of regulars familiar with one another. Although small, the space didn't feel over crowded or loud. We are a considerable distance away, but would certainly make the travel again! read more

Came for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday and was pleased to hear they serve breakfast all day on sundays! I was alone but told it would be about 45 min wait. I agreed to wait and about 2 min later a gentleman told me I could sit in the ice cream room if I wanted and he would wait on me there! The service was great and the espresso was delicious. I ordered the giant cinnamon roll and I was not disappointed! This thing was huge. I ate about half and was so full! Very cute restaurant, easy to find and plenty or parking. About nine months ago we got an egg sandwich that we liked. The problem was the Cinnamon Roll. I could not eat it since it was so stale. I tried to cut it in pieces to see if the middle was soft but had to use a steak knife and that was the end of that. read more

My husband and I had breakfast at this charming mother/daughter restaurant recently. Not only was the service first class but the food was cooked to perfection. The eggs came exactly the way I had ordered them, the croissant lightly toasted, the applewood bacon, 4 slices no less, delicious. The home fries, home made were crispy yet soft in the middle with a dusting of paprika, a nice touch. An attractive garish of orange slice and cut strawberry made for a very appetizing plate as per photo. The coffee was good also and refills kept coming. I would highly recommend you make a pilgrimage to this spot as they are open for lunch as well. This is a keeper. Prices very good. read more

I love Railways atmosphere. The place is really clean (which is most important to me). The food is delicious. The pancakes and French toast portion is enough to feed two people. I absolutely get the Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch salad. It is simply the best. I highly recommend that. On a lighter note, I've had their muffins and the Friday cinnamon bun. Servers were nice and cafe was clean. My wife and I were very disappointed by our breakfast. We each order waffles, one with a bacon side, the other with sausage. The waffles were cold and hard, the bacon was burned, and the sausage was just average. At least the coffee was good. Will not be back. Do not recommend. read more
