I ordered a simple dish, scrambled eggs, crispy home fries and toast with a side of "well done" turkey bacon. The second person in my party is an avid customer and I had the pleasure of becoming a diner here for the first time with them. We stopped in at the Quaker Diner about 1 in the afternoon. They serve breakfast all day, so I had an omelet, which came with hash browns and toast. It was quite good. My dining companion had a hamburger, which was both good and sizable. The coffee was very reasonably priced and refilled often. The atmosphere is excellent and authentic, since this diner began operations in 1931. The parking is limited, but we found street parking easily. Just left dinner. Terrible experience. Apparently they cater and prioritize a certain clientelle and ignored us. We came in and said we wanted seating for 2 and was asked to stand to the middle of the restuarant and waited standing for 10 minutes, when 4 booth chairs became available and at same time a couple walks in and takes the booth with out any questions and ignored us. Came here for breakfast with my husband. It was a first for us. Parking was a bit of a challenge though. We went in and it was a blast from the past. It hasn't been renovated in years. It's small but packed. When we placed our orders and they came in, I realized why they were packed. People continued coming in despite of the lack of available seats they were willing to wait. It's a nice little diner where you can relax and read the newspaper or watch your food be made in the open kitchen. Despite the fact this place is slightly cramped, it was definitely friendly, inviting and comfortable. My corned beef hash was excellent and my bacon was crispy. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the homefries had the perfect crust under them. All that and a little bit of coffee with toast. Oh man this is a perfect meal for my Sunday morning. This quaint little diner is excellent! Parking is a bit sus, and when the snow hits, it will be more difficult. However, it's worth it. The place was bustling, but I quickly found a place to sit at the counter. I ordered coffee and a bacon, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. It came out quickly, and everything I saw other people order looked delicious. The guy to my right had their Berf Stragonoff. Like any good diner, the portion was hefty. We visited Quaker Diner on a Sunday morning. I had read about the diner in a post online about local diners. We initially planned to wait for a booth but after awhile took two stools. The place had a great atmosphere. The service was quick. We ordered pancakes, poached eggs that came with hashed browns. Heard a lot of great things about this diner. We were in the area, so my BF and I decided to give it a try. We got there at the perfect time, as we were able to get a seat right away! Not even 2 minutes later, there was a huge wait at the door! Our waitress was funny and her hospitality was on point. The only thing that was lacking were the home fries topped with cheese. Went back today for the second time in 2 weeks after years of not going. When I went years ago, I realized one of the ladies was padding my bill and added things not on it. It took me a few meals before I realized it and called her out on it. This was after I used to tip generously for them ($4 tip on $10 meal), and needless to say I felt like a moron and so used for being so generous. After that, I purposely went back several times and left only small change as tips to remind her of what she did. Even before that, the other lady that works there was rude and brusque, and she one time left the American cheese wrapping paper in my omelet! It was so obviously visible, and I pointed it out to her and she was nonchalant and such, and even then I still tipped like 30% on the bill, because I used to feel sorry for this small scrappy diner. But after being taken advantage of, I changed my mind, and after going back a few more times just to leave change for tips on purpose, I stopped going for years. On top of that, it used to feel unsanitary, like I'd be eating at the counter and one of the ladies would be wiping down the counter with her tablecloth right next to my food, which I also found rude, like why do that as the customer is eating, and right next to their food! I finally went back 2 weeks ago for the first time in years, and I was cautiously optimistic that things had changed, and that first meal was fine, and actually tasty. I went back today, and the lady once again was rude, taking away some condiments I wasn't done with without asking. I thought once again what a fool I was for giving this place another try, as I thought back again about being cheated by them in the past and their rude behavior. It's the same rude service, nothing has changed, and the food also wasn't that great today. In short, this diner is only good for its prices, like you can't get a cheaper diner breakfast in West Hartford, but everything else about it leaves much to be desired, and I'm still angry when I think about being cheated by them in the past and the rudeness I experienced. So, make sure to check your bill, and no need to tip generously, I certainly didn't feel their behavior warrants it! Edit: Wow, I should've taken my own advice. Finally looked at the bill after I got home, and I was overcharged again! I was irritated at the place and didn't pay attention when the girl rang me up because I was annoyed and just wanted to leave, but after I got home, I saw that she snuck in an extra dollar charge, small enough that I wouldn't notice at the time. What a bunch of dishonest people. And to think, I still left a 15% tip for them despite everything. I should've just left no tip whatsoever. Unbelievable rude dishonest people. read more

I struggle with the Quaker Diner. They've been around for ages and you can tell from the look of it. It's a quaint little place with really reasonable prices and not a lot of seating or waiting area. They are indeed cash only and they don't have an ATM on site. I walked a block or so up and crossed a busy intersection to go to the gas station for their ATM. My bank pays me back so I didn't mind. I was also pretty unimpressed with their parking situation. Halls market is next door and the parking lot you'd assume you could park in next to the restaurant belongs to the market and threatens to tow you if you aren't a shopper. Street parking isn't easy to come by either. Once you get inside though the food is beyond reasonably priced and pretty tasty. My omelette was huge and the sides were good. Their coffee was hot and tasty - only $1.80 a cup. We got a side of blueberry pancakes and those were really good too. I still wanted to check this place out. Quaker Diner has its competitor, AC Petersen's which is down the street. But I guess the difference is that Quaker Diner has history. 2.) What you may see: You may feel like you're back in the 1940s, 50s or 60s. It's a small place, so when it is busy you can find yourself feeling awkward, standing and hovering around people's tables while you wait for a table or place at the bar side. This place still keeps the decor looking retro, with an old telephone, jukebox (which I believe does not play), and toys and gadget that are shelved over the tables. 3.) Food: I ordered the short stack of french toast, and an order of two eggs with corn beef hash and hash browns. They tasted pretty standard for a diner. Maybe next time i'll try their omelettes that I've been reading about on here. If you order an apple or orange juice, they don't serve it from the juice tap, it comes in a bottle, and I believe the company was Tropicana. 4.) Service: Standard diner wait staff service. They only accept cash and check. Apparently they are use to the many customers who come in only with debit/credit cards, so they tell them to go to the gas station to grab cash from the ATM. They may need to change that system sometime soon. But I see what they're trying to maintain, that old fashioned style. I guess now that I know, now I know. 5.) Considering how small the eatery is, our wait time wasn't too bad. The service at Quaker Diner was incredibly efficient, at least in my experience. Just note that they're only open until 1:30 pm on the weekends but serve breakfast the entire time ( lunch menu available only on weekdays). First of all, the coffee is outstanding. Since I drank about two cups more than usual, the caffeine was merrily, merrily coursing through my veins while we waited for our order. The menu didn't offer anything terribly unusual, just a wide selection of traditional diner classics with a range of omelet options, French toast, pancakes & homefries. I chose the raspberry pancakes, which were amazing- a nice contrast between the tangy fruit filling and light, buttery pancake flavor. My friend went for the kielbasa & cheese omelet, another delicious choice. Also, if you love homefries, definitely try them here. Just don't make my mistake and opt for the "cheddar homefries". What I envisioned to be a light sprinkle of shredded cheese turned out to be a big glistening glob of nacho-esque topping. So I worked around it. No big deal. I'd order a plain batch next time. The verdict? Excellent food, but try to get here early on weekends. We went around 9:30 and the place was already packed, so I imagine it gets busier as the hours roll by. The menu is basic breakfast items: pancakes, eggs, meats etc. The food was just OK though. That was really the only downfall. There appeared to only be one cook which led to the bacon and home fires being pre cooked and sitting in the warming area of the flat top grill. So the bacon was over cooked and too crispy.
