We went to McGrane's on the Green for the first time today for the Biscuits and Gravy. They had a generous amount of sausage gravy that completely buried the biscuits but it was lukewarm. The waitress disappeared before I could call it to her attention and I had to go up to the counter to let them know. They were very apologetic and heated up our plates but we could not finish them because they were not very appetizing. I had to flag down the waitress to ask for a coffee refill. My wife had a side of sausage patties which apparently gave her gastrointestinal distress. When we went to pay, we discovered they take CASH or CHECK ONLY. Luckily I had enough cash because I rarely carry cash any more. Sad because we were looking for a local breakfast spot. read more

Then let's talk about the food and small town America vibe. It's an old school diner feel with a counter and photos on the walls. The menu is everything you expect from a legit diner -- burgers and fries and ice cold cokes. All perfectly prepared and presented. What did I have? This place is so cute! It's on the Winsted Green, and has a few spots around the building but most are reserved for a nearby bank. You'll probably be parallel parking. I went there for 2025 Winsted Restaurant Week. It is cash only, so check the menu ahead of time. The food came in amazing portions - my appetizers had six potatos skins and six chicken wings - they have more than buffalo. My burger looked like the bun split but fit well on the roll, and was juicy and perfectly cooked medium well. The close of the meal, NY style cheesecake, had chocolate drizzled on and was so smooth. Stopped by for breakfast. I'd been here a few times before. The service had been good and the food ok so I figured it would be again. Sadly the food quality was poor. Pancakes dry and very thick. The eggs were not cooked to order despite a lengthy attempt to explain what I wanted. The waitress was very impatient and clearly inconvenienced by our order. I guess I'd have to admit she was rude. The food came and there was a hair on my plate. I asked a waitress to witness this hair hanging over the edge of my plate and all I got was sorry. No offer to replace my meal or comp it. Three people saw this plate and none were able to see a black hair on a white plate. In addition there was dried food on my knife from another patron and the bathrooms are dirty. BTW for the uninitiated you can't pay with a credit card here so bring cash. As a recent transplant to a town nearby I would have liked to continued to eat here. Just went to mcgranes on a breakfast date with my dad and it was DISGUSTING!!! The eggs tasted fake and cheap, the bacon tasted like jerky, and the pancakes weren't very good either! Along with that, the syrup bottles are so cheap that we went to squeeze the bottle and the syrup cap fell off and went all over my dad's food AND we found a hair in our food. They served my grandsons an egg with a huge egg shell and the other one an egg with no yolk at all. I order a Reuben with hard gross corned beef and bright orange thousand island. Nasty coleslaw. This a really reliable & friendly place. I've been driving it past it for about 5 years and finally stopped in twice in the last two weeks, for breakfast both times. Excellent & consistent bacon & eggs. I look forward to trying more items. Way better than stopping at the nearby McDonalds! Other patrons seem to be "locals" and folks at the counter definitely friendly. Server & cook (the owner?) also friendly and accommodating. No credit cards--but prices very reasonable too. read more

Was in the Winsted area at Noon today, so stopped at McGrane's on the Green for a lunch take-out. Went in a bit blind, signs in front indicated the place was either a diner or a sandwich shop. Or a pizza joint. Whatever, I was hungry and I was about to find out what the story was. Ordered the Cajun Turkey Melt sandwich w/ sweet potato fries. Meal came out after a short wait, was $7.95 plus tax. While I was waiting, noticed that McGrane's had a Boston-Irish theme to it (but I didn't hold that against them, even though I am a Yankees' fan). Hit the road with my food and ate it overlooking a nearby lake. The Cajun Turkey Melt was very tasty, meat had the right amount of spice, bread was toasted perfectly. Mcgranes was delicious, and the restaurant was clean. Our server was friendly and helpful. The place itself is nothing extraordinary, but it is clean and that is important. Food is okay, just for your information the oil they use is not separate they do everything in there my son who is highly allergic to sea food couldn't get French fries or chicken fingers which he was extremely bummed out about, so I had to order a whole Cheese pizza just for him. The buffalo chicken has a good amount of meat, you can add in whatever you want! The Philly cheesesteak was your traditional cheesesteak with your choice of cheese. I just had the worst experience, ordered 2 pizza's to go, 1 Gluten Free with sausage and 1 small regular pizza with sausage. I go them up, they take the Gluten free out of the oven place it in the box and put it on top of the oven. OK I figure the other one's not done cooking yet so I sit and wait, 5 minutes go by and I see the pizza chef just starting to make my second pizza even though my first pizza that i ordered at the exact same time had already been done for 5 minutes. First time customers, and when we walked in, it was like having a personal cheering section all for us! Everyone was SO friendly and our servers were SO helpful! I ordered pork chops, broccoli and cole slaw, while hubbie ordered the fried chicken dinner. The garlic mashed potatoes were very tasty. My pork chops had golden grill marks really cooked to perfection, moist and a nice sauce. They have an extensive menu, serve breakfast all day, and everyone seems to know everyone else, a real family atmosphere. 3.5 stars actually - McGrane's has good lunch / dinner / breakfast food, with excellent value. A real plus for this place is... breakfast food anytime of day, not just during breakfast hours. McGranes is -not- "fine dining" and is much more along the lines of being a good local diner. The seating arrangements for a table is really oddball and it can be hard to know where to sit. read more
