This was my first time trying this restaurant and it was SOOOOO GOOD! I got the beef lo mein, the food was so flavorful an the portions were huge! Plenty left togo. The service was excellent, our waitress was quick to fill up our waters, gave us good recommendations and even put our food in boxes for us. I have to start off by saying we've been patrons for years and have watched the quality of the food decrease in flavor and quality. The last 3 times we dined there the service was excellent as usual but the food not even close to what it was 6 years ago. Rainbow is by far the best Chinese food in the Farmington area and everyone knows it! I've dined in twice (it's a really average experience) but we carry out at least once a month. Their food is top notch - I love their vegetarian egg rolls, sesame chicken and veggie lomein (they use thin noodles). I will note that they usually shut down for vacation for a month in the summer and sometimes it can be hard to get through on the phone to place an order at peak times. read more

What a very pleasant surprise!! We live in Canton and we were on northwest side thinking we wanted a new Chinese place to try. We wanted a place that had seating. Yelp helped us find Rainbow. Small ~10 booths/tables restaurant. Clean, but not at all fancy. I had the seafood with egg roll and hot/sour soup. Hot/sour soup was best I've ever had. Mildly spicy with a rich broth. Very good. Egg roll was tasty. Crispy with good flavorful filling. It's a pretty good one. Seafood in garlic sauce was good. Scallops and shrimp in garlic sauce with broccoli, onion and green pepper. Very good. Wife had general chicken. Breading was lighter than most, which she liked. Overall, service was friendly and attentive, food was served very hot and food was tasty. No siracha sauce (next time I'll bring my own). No beer menu- would have loved a Tsingtao beer to go with my meal. King Sheng in Ann Arbor has food that is a bit better, but Rainbow is very good. King Sheng has virtually no seating. Seating and service are a plus at Rainbow. We will be returning for years to come. We look forward to trying some other entrees. read more

My co-worker has been going to Rainbow for at least 25 years... finally after so long of hearing how great the food is and how other people from other office's will pickup carry out for their workplace as well. The white rice and egg drop soup is always my go-to, but the sweet&sour chicken is delicious AND the almond chicken. Been going here since they opened years and years ago. Very good food and reasonable prices. It's a small place, and they value the turnover of their tables, so sometimes they move just a bit too fast. Never in a rude way, but you get the message! My suggestion? The General Tso's has a tangy sauce that is incredible. And the portions are very large - My wife and I can easily split an order and still have leftovers. I can genuinely say that we've never had a bad experience eating here! The staff is amazing and incredibly helpful when you're looking at trying something new. I thought the second menu was accidental, so just looked at mine. I was passed by twice and finally asked when my order would be taken (2 people came in at the same time & both tables had their orders taken). The server was surprised, as shed assumed i was waiting for someone. I told her i hadn't been asked & the hostess apparently assumed i was a twosome. I chose the #2 combination of Almond Boneless Chicken, soup, egg role and chicken fried rice. The egg drop soup was rather thick, a bit salty, but otherwise hot & tasty. The chicken fried rice was overcooked, gummy & the chicken breast pieces very dry. The entree was hot, crispy, moist and tasty. The brown sauce was thick and somewhat too salty. I brought the rest of my almond chicken and the egg roll home. The restaurant was clean. read more

I don't know where to start. First of all, I knew I wanted to carry out because I has tired, and wanted to go back home to watch a movie. After looking through Yelp, I came across this place that isn't too far from work, and had pretty good reviews (Yay!). I called in my order, Kung Po Shrimp (no spicy) Combination dinner, and CHOW MEIN vegetable Pt. The guy was very nice, and even repeated my order back to me, so I was happy because I knew he wrote it down right. When I arrived to the restaurant to pick up my order, it had already been 15 min, and it still wasn't ready. That wasn't an issue for me because I wasn't running late for anything, and in all honesty I had no rush, so I sat down. I noticed the staff was super friendly, and overall I thought, "cool I can see myself coming in one day to sit down". When my order was ready, it was tied up in a bag, and just ready to go. My surprise when I get home, is that I didn't get my Chow Mein, but instead got CHOP SUEY! I was SOOO sad, and then I thought, "Oh it must have been my mistake when ordering, oh well". LUCKILY: they attached my receipt and that's where I noticed, and I had in fact ordered chow mein and they gave me chop suey. I had strictly ordered chow mein to go with my dinner, because I'm not a huge fan of fried rice, and I just wanted to have some noddles with my food. So this was a huge let down for me. In addition, they didn't give me any forks and napkins with my take out, which forced me to get out of bed after already taking everything out :( Sad. So if you're ordered carry out, and you know you need forks/napkins, please make sure to ask them for some. Overall, the food was good tho. The ingredients were fresh, the shrimp was good. I'm not a huge fan of their egg roll. Now, yes I can see myself coming back because the food, but I don't trust them as far as giving me everything I need. I hate to say this, but I will probably open my bag next time to double make sure that what I ordered is in fact what they give me. I don't like to do this, but I don't know if I can face another disappointment like that. Girls gotta have her noodles. I am a little hurt about this, because I'm pretty sure they won't give me free noddles, but I also don't want to pay again to have to try them. So we'll see when I go back. My all time favorite spot for Asian food! I have celiac disease which made me cut out many restaurants from my life. I'm SO happy I found Rainbow Restaurant through other celiacs. They understand my issue & adapt their menu for me. I've been to places that claim to do this, but end up feeling sick after. I did not feel sick at all after eating here. If you want good American-Chinese food, this is the restaurant for you. Their hot and sour soup is the best in the area. I will drive the 14 miles from my house to the restaurant for this soup alone. It's been 5ish years since my review of Rainbow introduced me to Yelp. I used to drive from Troy to go here 2-3+ times per week. That died down in 2014 to once a week, which has been the standard since. I now live just down the road. Since then a few things have changed. Mainly the restaurant was completely renovated, and as a result prices went up. Additionally, their supplier that used to make the donuts they served is no longer available, now you get the standard fortune cookie. That part is a bit sad as the sugary donut hole to finish the meal really set them apart. While I was looking through the menu, she rapped her pen hard on the table 3 or 4 times, then told me I was taking too long to order! A minute later she reached over and hit the brim of the baseball cap I was wearing, not just once, but twice!! I told her she needed to calm down, but she laughed, thinking it was humerus. My wife and I were ready to get up and leave at that point, but we were with another couple who wanted to stay. They have been to the same restaurant before, and knew the waitress. "She can be a little obnoxious; you just have to overlook the way she treats the customers." Unfortunately, though, Her rude behavior could not be overlooked. I was in the area on business and ate at Rainbow Restaurant. Everyone was friendly. The food tasted good. It didn't take long for the food to arrive at my table. But I suffered [terribly severe] GI upset immediately after my meal of broccoli in spicy garlic sauce, white rice and a veggie spring roll. I also had water with ice. Who knows if it was the food or if the ice was tainted (as is common), but the GI issue was immediate and lasted for two days. Luckily, although I had stomach pain, I didn't suffer from the nausea that often accompanies food-borne illness. To be fair, I of course have no proof that it was the food, sauce or ice water. But I had been 100% fine until I ate, so a connection seems plausible, if not likely. As I said in the opening paragraph, everything was tasty, though more expensive than I customarily pay for the same meal across the country. This was the worst Chinese I've attempted to eat. I couldn't even finish the Mongolian beef! It was the consistency of watered down chop suey but with no flavor. (mind you we ordered it hot even) The general tso chicken was great quality breast meat but no sweet or saltiness to it, it had no flavor in general! The Crab Rangoon should be called cream cheese puff because there was no crab in it, just a huge glob of cream cheese!The food was so horrible we drove the 20mins back just to return it to try and get a refund. I can't explain in words how wonderful an evening at Rainbow is. Tommy is the greatest, if you aren't sure what to pick from the vast menu, ask him for a suggestion from it or from his head! Our favorite dishes aren't even on the menu. They have a space in the back that can accommodate large groups (I think we've done 20+) and if you call ahead he is more than happy to take special requests and prepare things like lobster, hoa fun, and whole fish. They are slowly renovating to make the ambiance even better, but you really come here for the food. They often close down for a few weeks in the summer for a well deserved family vacation, so sometimes it is worth it to call ahead if it is a school break time. read more

We stopped here because of the good reviews. We realized we had been here before, and the food was good both occasions. The consumers at this establishment were primarily western people. The food was good, but definitely not authentic Chinese food. I ordered a combo that came with these crunchy chips at the beginning, soup, fried rice and my main dish was sesame chicken. I don't normally like egg rolls, so I gave it to my partner (who is Chinese). He did not like them very much. I got wonton soup which was pretty good. The service was quick and friendly. The main course left a lot to be desired. I got sesame chicken, which was good, and there was a lot of it. The down side was the fried rice. It was not super good and my partner did not like his meal. He got ho fun and said it was tasteless. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, this is not the place for you. If you like American Chinese then it fit the bill. We rated it 3 stars because we lean more towards authentic Chinese food. We probably would not come back. read more

We had to try this place because it had such a happy name... Rainbow! Right away, we were seated by a very attentive gentleman who was enamored by my niece's baby girl. He knew right what to do and immediately grabbed a highchair, flipped it upside down, waited for Maddie to put the car seat on top and then he gently scooted Skyler up to the table. I think he was the owner or the manager because he came by frequently to wave at Skyler and seemed genuinely interested in us and making sure we were happy. We made it easy on our waitress and placed a standard order. I asked if she could omit the MSG and she said that she could minimize it which was fine with me. I ordered the shrimp with garlic sauce. Knowing that Asian food is usually not as spicy as Thai food, I went ahead and ordered it "hot." It was awesome! Perfect heat, plenty of sauce and nice big shrimp! My niece ordered a beef and broccoli combo plate. All of our meals came with a cup of soup but hers also came with a huge egg roll! The broccoli was beautiful! It was nice and crispy, not droopy and depleted of all nutrients. My sister ordered shrimp with lobster sauce. Wow! It was a lot of sauce! I didn't try hers but it must've been good because she cleaned the plate! My friend and I dined here after walking around the Saturday Farmer's Market. I tried the Peking chicken combination lunch platter after reading the great reviews on Yelp. The sauce is soy based which I'm not fond of since I prefer a thicker, sweeter sauce when I have Chinese food. But the chicken was cooked well. The chicken fried rice is average at best. The platter is also served with wonton soup which was very good. We also ordered an appetizer of beef sticks which were good also. But the star of the evening is the crab Rangoon. Wow! I've never had better since I moved to Michigan. So flavorful and stuffed with crabby, cream cheesy goodness. I placed a takeout order a few days ago and had two orders of the crab Rangoon and sweet and sour chicken. The crab Rangoon will have me coming back often. Also the owner is very nice and friendly. He was great when he took our order and served our food. Second visit: I went out of my comfort zone and ordered the beef eggplant. That is a tasty dish. I usually come here for a quick, inexpensive lunch on week days. The inside is small, clean and cozy atmosphere. The server is very attentive and nice. The lunch combo menu (Main dish with friend rice & a cup of soup of your choice : wonton, hot & sour or egg drop and an egg roll) is extensive and all are under $10. I usually upgrade the egg roll to a spring roll (rolled in thin, crisp wrap) for $1 more. I have never had NY or California Chinese food, but I have tried many well rated Chinese restaurants in the area, and several in different states. I always compare them to Rainbow. Rainbow blows them all away, and even though I live over 30 minutes away now, it is the only one I will go to. The food is great, portions and prices are great, the restaurant is clean, and the service is great. The owners are always there and are very nice people. The General's chicken is made with big chunks of quality white meat chicken - way more meat than other places.
