Very good Chinese food. Prices were a little off what the menu states but I am okay with that. Take the prices in menu with grain of salt but not like it is $3 or more higher. Family of 5. Ordered the Sesame Chicken Combo, Almond Chicken Combo, 2 Chicken Fried Rice Quarts, & 1 Shrimp Fried Rice quarts. The Almond Chicken & Chicken Fried Rice were great. The Sesame Chicken was a little too much sauce & not great chicken quantity. The Shrimp Fried Rice had maybe 6 of the smallest shrimp in the whole box. Boon Kai is the main spot for the best Chinese that I get on the west side of metro Detroit. When I moved out to WB, I looked for many take out Chinese restaurants. This is my go to. I will admit I have had a few times where my fried rice was not cooked all the way, but I just call them and they fix the problem without giving me an attitude. My favorite thing are the dinner rolls. I loved having dinner rolled with my Chinese and was happy to find out they give them out. I order the sweet and sour chicken and the chicken pieces are big, but it's meat and not breading. The pepper steak is also very good. The Singapore noodles are delicious as well. I don't mind they are take out only. When I think of Chinese I never think of dine in. Give them a chance and enjoy some quality take out. read more

Terrible, all the way around. While unpacking food at home, we noticed they forgot our second entree. Didn't bother to go all the way back to get it, there was plenty of food. Eggrolls were ok, wonton soup was ok. Hunan chicken was absolutely tasteless despite the neon red sauce. Seriously, the red sauce that was supposed to be spicy had zero flavor! The chicken fried rice also had no flavor, and the rice had a stiff texture like it was old or dried out. I can only guess that no one tastes the food they make. read more

That being said, we have ordered from this place once already and the food wasn't that great but we figured it was because it was a late night when went in last time, 30 min before closing. OMG! Look at that dirty kitchen door! Was my mom's first words as we enter the Boon Kai restaurant. And still, we decided to stay. Sticky table tops and crooked chairs did not scared us, after all, we are Russians, we know the worst places to be. Hot and Sour soup is the work of culinary art, Boon Kai chef should patent the recipe. Almond chicken is tasty and always fresh. I write ALWAYS because despite all the negatives we become regulars at this 'hole in the wall'. Waitresses are very sweet. It took only two visits to the restaurant for them to remember that I don't like a green pepper in my Kon Pow beef. Food is the star at this restaurant and you know sometimes stars have to perform in the horrible venues.I do think they should hire a good cleaning company. BOON KAI is the best chinese restaurant in michigan! its a little precious gem hiding in the city of walled lake. the hot & sour soup is medicine! gum lo wonton is my favorite~ i always ask for extra wontons!! boonkai special, sweet & sour beef & chicken is a must!!! i love the fact that they use real chicken breast for their chicken meat and not some reconstituted bleach chicken like the hole in the wall chinese restaurants in the hood. oh and their home made buns!! i love the smell of it! always pack up a dozen before i go home. the price is very reasonable and the portion is more than enough! i live about a good hour away but it is always worth the drive!!! read more

I'm so sorry about this. I really don't like giving bad reviews but I'm afraid there's not much I can say in favor of this place. When I walked in the door, my first thought was that I was glad I wasn't dining in. They obviously do mostly takeout because they were very busy but no one was dining in. They must count on this because I didn't see any waitresses and the place was very dirty and the tables seemed to be just thrown in the place with no apparent design. In the short amount of time I was there, about 10 minutes, I watched about six people come in and get their takeout orders. The gentleman that helped me, even though he looked frantic with all of the running he was doing, was very nice and the prices were cheap. Well, that's it for the good points. I think my husband and I agreed that it was the absolute worst Chinese food experience we have ever had. If it weren't the only thing we had in the house, we probably wouldn't have eaten it. But we suffered through it. I ordered the chicken Kung pow and the garlic shrimp. Both of the sauces tasted exactly alike... Gross! The rice seemed like overcooked minute rice and the egg rolls were mushy and tasteless. They gave a lot of food for the money, including some giant dinner rolls which would've been good except they put them into a plastic bag so they were all sweaty and chewy by the time I got home. This was my absolute favorite chinese restaurant in the area when I lived in Walled Lake. I used to order General Tsao or Sechzuan Chicken until I tried the Gum Lo Wonton. I've never seen it on any other restaurants menu but once I had it, I never ordered other meal off their menu, it's THAT good. Im visiting from Ilinois, was directed here by my aunt. The resturant is fairly small & out dated. Only 2 people seated at 5 on a tuesday. The Crab Rangoon is bittersweet in that it was good but theyre small. Ordered the General Tso chicken (when you order you are able to ask for "heavy seasoning/heat" which i asked for) and even when it was soaked in a pool of sauce, it was still really bland and the chicken itself was crunchy but very thin "discs" of meat, almost looking like a perogi. The sweet and sour shrimp was your cliche thick/heavy sweet red sauce, but the issue i have is when we ordered a quart/large we were given the pint/regular and charged for the smaller one, a simple mistake but i question how often they get away with it. Upgrading your white rice to plain fried is an additional 2 dollars not well spent. Also ordered a pint of the Hot and Sour soup, its a meal in itself for one, but flavor was mediocre. This was our first, last and only visit to this restaurant. The sizzling rice soup was prepared away from our table so by the time it got to us, it was pretty much just soup with soggy rice. The bread was good but that was all. The egg rolls were all breading, doughy, under cooked. Main course of almond chicken we couldn't even cut through with a knife. All that said we only complained about the chicken we physically could not eat. They didn't even offer to take it off our bill. Had to go home and make a drink to take the taste away. Out of all the mini-mall located American Chinese restaurants in the area (Walled Lake, Wixom, Wolverine Lake), Boon Kai easily has the best quality food and largest portions. I've never had a problem with dried-out, nasty chicken or pork like I've experienced in other Chinese places nearby. Boon Kai's food is always moist, hot and satisfying. Their sweet dinner rolls are awesome too. The dine-in accommodations are typically horrid for this kind of restaurant; the booth benches are coming apart, the tables wobble, there are leak stains on the drop ceiling, the hvac is performing at a bare minimum for human habitation and they make the weakest attempt at Chinese decor - a solitary mosaic on one wall. But decor is not the reason you'd come to Boon Kai anyway, it's to satisfy that infrequent craving for Chinese take-out. That they can do very well. Boon Kai is the BEST chinese around!!! Definite "DIVE" as Guy Fieri would call it but who cares??? You can't go anywhere else and pay $5.50 for sweet and sour chicken which is HUGE enough to feed two people. Their chicken is PURE white meat, not bleached chunks like others around the area. The staff remembers you and is always friendly. If you have to wait for your food when its busy, it is DEFINITELY worth the wait....and their HOMEMADE dinner rolls melt in your mouth. I have never eaten here before and have seen the place before but it always looked empty or closed. My goto Chinese places are in Livonia and Canton, but as I am frequently driving around Walled Lake and Commerce, I chose to give Boon Kai a try. The indoor decor is, well to be nice, plain and date and dimly lit. There were no customers. Only a young asian guy talking on a phone next to the cash register and an old asian lady sitting at a booth in the very back. Sometimes places like this - what I call a 'dive' - end up being decent places to eat. But I was actually unsure if I should sit down and eat or choose takeout. They seemed to be doing a brisk takeout business, every few mins someone would walk in and pick up or place and order and the young man seemed to be answering the phone at a dizzying pace. At first glance the menu seemed peculiar - because the prices all seemed way to cheap for a Chinese diner in 2017. I don't know, I wasn't sure if I could trust it. I opted for some general tso dinner combo which was only $6.95, I asked if it was white or dark meat, the kid didn't seem to understand at first, I had to ask again, two more times before he said white. So ok that would be ok. I personally prefer dark meat for my general tso chicken, but i know my wife prefers the white. I also ordered a pint of vegetable egg foo young, another dinner combo which was some sort of szechuan beef & sweet/sour chicken, and then a small egg drop soup. In all the total bill was barely $26 with tax. Again I thought I might of been in the twilight zone or some greasy spoon 5yrs ago. I haven't bought chinese takeout dinner - 3 meals and soup for less than $30 in ages. I sat waiting and I looked around the restaurant, there was a faint smell of pine, which made me cringe, and I swear the old lady in the back kept staring at me. I was happy when the food was ready so I go home. Well the food is well, weird... The combo szechuan beef and s&s chicken was both in the same styrofoam container - strangely sweet beef stir fry that had almost no heat and was disappointing. the s&s chicken was fresh, crunchy, and plentiful - lots of chicken and not too much breading, the s&s sauce a nice tang. the fried rice looked like it had been cooked a few times too many and had too much soy sauce flavor. the egg roll was a bit soggy and had almost no flavor on its own. my wife's food - her egg foo young was drowning in an orange goo that resembled baby food - we were both grossed out. After cleaning the egg foo young of the nasty day glo orange goop, they tasted decent. Her general tso's wasn't bad - there was almost no heat and the sauce was sweeter than either of us would of liked. However it had nice meaty white chicken chunks, which were not overly breaded. She liked it. Not the best, but not the worst. Lastly the egg drop soup - I was fearful when I saw how orange it looked, but thankfully, it wasn't a thick gloop, and it actually had some of its own flavor. The rolls they give are a bit overkill. Reminds me of a few other Chinese dives I've been too. oversized soggy chewy white dinner rolls do not speak to me as authentic Chinese cuisine. I will give this place another go. Not sure if I will be brave enough to actually sit down there to eat. But if the prices don't change too much in 2018, it might not be too shabby for me to get basic americanized chinese food from there again some day. read more

So here's the thing with Boon Kai, it is not a classy place. But, it's not trying to be. Yes, the places lacks in decor and may look a little sketchy but, it does have as I like to call it the best "cheap Chinese" around! Everything is fresh and tastes great.
