Rakkan Ramen completely changed how I think about ramen. We first came here because I was craving ramen and wanted to try a place that specializes in it, and I'm so glad we did. Everything from the flavor to the experience just feels a step above. The (always-vegan) broth is rich and well-balanced, and you can really tell the focus is on quality. One thing I really appreciate is how accommodating they are with customizations. I usually ask for my ramen without nori (seaweed) and skip the egg, and they get it right every time. It might seem like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference not having to send anything back. The atmosphere is also a big plus. It's cozy and inviting, perfect for sitting down and enjoying a warm bowl of ramen. The first time we went it was pretty busy, but it still felt comfortable. The second time, we went earlier in the day and it was quieter, which made the experience even better. At this point, anytime I'm craving ramen, this is where we go. Rakkan was one of the first ramen spots I got to visit when I moved to the South Bay. There's a tiny lot that can fit 4-6 cars, but otherwise it's street parking. As you approach the restaurant you'll find tables outside, inside, and the bar area on the left-hand side. I've tried different items on the menu over the years. From their Spicy Garnet, Quartz, gyoza, sushi, different buns, etc. But the Amber Ramen is spectacular! Rich broth with a deep umami from the shoyu and bonito flake mix. The chashu cuts are seared beautifully. On the topic of pork, the pork belly buns make for a great bite too. I love the sauces they included. My only slight notes are that the ramen is occasionally greasy and the chashu featured is on the thinner side. I'd expect more given the price tag for single bowl. Lastly, their plum wine is definite pleasant surprise. Fragrant, light, and compliments most of their ramen options quite well. Rakkan Ramen is one of my all time favorite ramen shops. When I saw their dineLA specials, I knew I had to make a trip. For $35 their dineLA offering is a wonderful way to experience a variety of their amazing dishes. The first course for the dineLA menu is the Edamame. One has a choice to get it lightly salted or tossed in garlic chili spice. I chose the latter and it sure was spicy! They had the fiery touch of spice spread throughout the edamame. It was good but slightly salty. The second appetizer consisted of two hand rolls. I chose their Umami roll and their Green roll. The Umami roll is filled with garlic sautéed mushrooms, seaweed salad and fried onions. Their Green roll has deep fried broccolini, avocado and cucumbers. These both made for the perfect light starter! For the main (third course), we got our choice of ramen. My choice was the Spicy Quartz Ramen. I loved the mix of creamy sauce and spicy miso, I was slightly surprised that they put chicken chashu in my ramen. I thought from previous trips this needed to be requested. Nevertheless, the ramen was spot on. It had the perfect spicy kick and creamy texture that I loved. Last but not least was dessert. For dineLA one has the choice of Matcha Mochi Ice Cream or Tokyo Drip. Since there were two of us dining, we got to try both! The Tokyo Drip consisted of a Japanese style coffee jelly made with agar agar and topped with sweet cream. This dessert was fun - loved filling the cup with cream. It also had a strong coffee flavor. I definitely got my caffeine fix! The Matcha Mochi Ice Cream was also a good dessert. This was served frozen and true cool matcha bliss. To pair with all the food, we also had our choice of one drink. I got their homemade lemonade. It had a good tart taste. This was perfect to pair with the spicy ramen. Overall I really loved getting to try the different food offerings via the dineLA menu. Rakkan Ramen always delivers on bold flavors and deliciousness. We started coming here as a ramen option when we are with our vegetarian work pal, but we still go here even when she is not with us. I really like the Garnet (spicy). We noticed at our last lunch the ramen is no longer split between regular and spicy versions of the same dish (Garnet and Spicy Garnet). They now add 50 cents to make it spicy. I ordered Garnet with no spice added. They have chili oil at the table. I always add a spoon or two to the Spicy Garnet, this time I added three. It was perfect. read more

Spicy Garnet: Miso broth was very deep, flavorful and spicy. Unfortunately the two pieces of cha shu were overcooked. The egg was also overcooked and not runny. This place is good for Redondo Beach, but if you're looking for stellar Japanese food go to Gardena/Torrance. Of course, we had to try another restaurant out during DineLA and this time we decided to try out Rakkan because we LOVE ramen. This restaurant is a small quaint restaurant with outdoor seating as well. Thankfully we arrived at the time that we did because there was a wait outside. All the servers were helpful and made sure that we had everything we needed. Onto the food, we ordered Edamame (spicy and regular), Spicy salmon roll, California roll, vegetable roll, Umami roll, and three Ruby ramen bowls (2 spicy one regular). The edamame was of course delicious and flavorful. The hand rolls were really good and a large portion size. They were packed with everything, and we were almost full just off of the hand rolls alone. Now the ramen, that was so delicious! The broth was so flavorful, and we added the chili oil that was just the right amount of spice. The ramen bowl was huge and enough to eat the next day. The ramen bowl we had contained shrimp, chicken, egg, green onions, etc. and everything in the ramen bowl was amazing. I would love to come back on a cold day and enjoy this ramen again. read more

This is definitely my favorite vegan ramen place! I always stop by here after work and order togo. It usually takes 10 mins for my order to be ready- so quick! There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant. Parking usually isn't an issue in the week days when I go. I can imagine when it's busy in the weekends, there are limited parking spots. There is also indoor and outdoor seating. There is even bar seating if you want to dine alone. Feels very cozy / Japanese ambiance. My go to is the vegan creamy quartz! Very disappointed with our most recent visit. The ramen was average. The portions are smaller and the service was extremely slow even though it was a late Saturday afternoon with few customers. It took over 35 minutes for our three orders of ramen to arrive and by that time the other two in our party had already finished their meals. There were no apologies by our server. Thanks to Dine LA around July it game me an opportunity to try them out. It's a small dining area but I like the open area especially since it was summer but nothing like the heatwave we're having now. Everyone was helpful and I asked for the most popular broth and he suggested the spicy garnet with is spicy miso. The broth was heaven! It has some heat but definitely not bad. The noodles were al dente and it had a slice of tonkatsu and egg. With the Dine LA it included sushi and the sushi rice was horrible. So hard. Over all I was blown away with their broth and I wish I tried them sooner but now it will be in my rotation to satisfy a ramen craving. read more

Comfortable ambience, clean, restrooms, and we will go back again to try the different vegan options on the menu. It was very enjoyable. I don't know what it was, but it put us in a food coma. This place is inching its way to becoming my "go to" place for ramen. I promised myself I'd try the Pearl (shio / salt) ramen on my next visit. Mind you, I have shoyu (soy sauce) running through my veins (which is why I may have blood pressure issues, but I digress), so getting a non-shoyu option was a new option. It did not disappoint! The umami in the broth is amazing, it complimented the noodles and garnish wonderfully. And because it's a vegetable-based broth, I don't feel the "heaviness" of a tonkotsu broth (which I still enjoy!), it was quite satisfying. Also worth noting, they've modified the recipe for the kara-age (Japanese fried chicken), it's even better now. A thin crisp coating over a juicy bit of dark meat. This time my son and I, who introduced me to Rakkan Ramen, visited the Redondo Beach location. It's slightly easy to miss, but well worth finding. It's a delightful place to dine. They're open late which I appreciate ! The ramen soup base is entirely plant-based. They removed their older soup combo and replaced with soup + sushi combo. That was a bummer for me. The vegan quartz was good too but they also changed their noodles that they usually had for years. The seating area is spacious and clean. And service was friendly. Thanks to DineLA me and co-workers came here to have some ramen and sushi. The Friday we came here was not busy and parking at the side of the restaurant was not full. We were greeted and sat down immediately. Friendly staff took our order of Spicy Garnet Ramen and Spicy Quartz Ramen. We added an order of spicy edamame, spicy tuna sashimi, and takoyaki. I had the Spicy Garnet Ramen....broth was light and flavorful...it was really good! It wasn't spicy for me so I added a tad of chili sauce which gave the punch I was looking for. The sushi omakase set that came with the DineLa menu...fresh fish slices and huge at that! Loved it! Takoyaki was filling and the spicy edamame was spicy indeed! This is most rudest restaurant I've ever been to. I had my husband pick up our Togo order. Mind you the restaurant was absolutely dead on a Saturday afternoon with no one inside the large dining room. They didn't like my husband simply standing there waiting for the order. They rudely told him they wanted him to stand outside. I don't know if this was them being racist or what the problem was. They had no need to do that and I've never heard of that before in my life. The food took long to make, the workers are atrociously unfriendly and outright offensive. The food itself was not tasty and cold. On top of that the restaurant was slow and empty you'd think it would have been clean. The tables and bar counter were was sticky and gross. Never visiting here again. Great service. Was greeted and seated immediately. The server came back several times to check on us. I ordered the spicy tuna sashimi, chicken bun, and fried brussel sprouts. The spicy tuna sashimi was very tasty. The server was very considerate when I told her that I didn't want any green onions on my tuna, she further asked if I was ok with chives. Thank goodness she asked because I didn't want chives on my tuna either. She then again confirmed if that's the same for the chicken bun. The chicken bun was made of small pieces of fried chicken breast. It was fried perfectly where you can feel the different textures. The seasoning was on the light side, but it's fine with me because I'm not one for heavy seasoning either. The fried brussel sprouts were fried to perfection. I like that the leaves were burnt, but not too the point where it's butter and Rakkan Ramen was able to achieve that level. One of my comfort dishes is Ramen, which is why I have really high standards for it. Rakkan ramen was good, it has a large variety of options to choose from which is really important. Well isn't this great. Haven't been here in a while and decided to give them business. We were going to dine in but it was quite noisy on a Friday night. So we decided to take our food to-go. Unfortunately my experience this time around was not good. We ordered the vegan ramen and what we got wasn't vegan. When we got home we were surprised to notice that the broth we got was not plant-based. Not sure if it was pork broth, but it smelled really fishy like shrimps. We knew it wasn't vegan. It tasted so salty and fishy. We didn't eat it and was wasted we just threw it out. We called the restaurant and spoke to the manager and he was apologetic about it and handled it professionally. He offered to reimburse the food. We drove all the way there, waited for the food, and had to drive back home only to realize we couldn't eat dinner-- and had to order something else to eat. We normally check our food prior to leaving whenever placing togo. But this time we didn't check thoroughly on the spot to taste it as we were in a hurry to go home and eat--and we trusted the place since we had been here many times, years ago. In this case, it isn't so much about being picky. We haven't eatin meat products in over 7 years. If we had eatin it by accident we would've gotten sick. Those ingredients are foreign to our bodies and have been for years. The stomach doesn't recognize it and won't break down easily. Fortunately the manager was nice about it, but my suggestion to the restaurant owner is to properly train the staff and be more careful next time as not to waste food and everyone's time. I know mistakes happen, but making sure there aren't any dairy products as well as meat products is important prior to serving. read more
