Finally got to try this place out. We came on a Saturday around 430p. It wasn't crowded and we were able to take our time deciding what to get. First you order at the counter, then you move onto the tempura bar where you can pick different fried items to add to your entree. These items are an additional cost. Then after that you pay. I got the nikutama which is one of their best sellers which comes with beef and a soft boiled egg. I loved the taste of the beef and the broth was really delicious. Noodles were cooked to my liking. I wanted to love the tempura bar but I wasn't a fan of my tempura being cold. I prefer it being hot and fresh and since it was just sitting there it got cold after a while. I will definitely be back to have more udon. But maybe skip the tempura bar unless they have an option in which I can order it fresh. Restaurant was spacious and clean. My go to when I'm craving udon! I like how each bowl is made to order. I always go with the nikutama, which has the perfect amount of beef and udon in a flavorful broth. Portion is pretty decent that I still had some to take home. I also like their variety of tempura options as a side because it gives a nice crunch alongside the softness of the udon noodles. Service is welcoming and prompt. Plenty of seating both inside and outside the restaurant. This is our second time coming to this Marugame location (almost two years later!). The line went by quick, we came at the rush but the staff moved very efficiently through orders. We tried their new item the Cheese Katsu Tomatama udon. The broth was flavorful and thick; it had some sweetness with a kick of spice. The katsu was really crispy and felt freshly fried. The katsu is a pork katsu! The cheese is a cheese sauce mixed with egg. Definitely a more interesting udon dish -- felt reminiscent of a play on tomato and egg dish! We also got the curry nikutama udon which is a classic and my fave! Nothing unusual, the curry soup was thick and had lots flavor especially with the toppings (tempura flakes and green onion). They have a lot of beef in the large portion too! The gyudon was packed to the brim with rice and a lot of beef! They had the sauce on the side and asked us what we preferred. My daughter was feeling sick and I asked her if she wanted ramen or udon noodles, which is her favorite. She opted for udon and I was super stoked to find Marugame Udon located in Torrance. Like when did they open this new location? Found out they opened two years ago, so still fairly new. My first time experiencing Marugame Udon was at their original location in Waikiki, Hawaii. It's almost like an udon version of Chipotle. Lol. We ordered our food online for pick up and it was ready quicker than anticipated. Love this option as it's super convenient ordered our food for pick up at 5:15 PM and it was ready at 5:05 PM. Arrived at the location, which is located in the Hannam Chain Supermarket Plaza in the corner. The spot was spacious and very clean. Typically, you can go up to the counter and order: 1. Choose your noodles. 2. Choose your tempura. 3. Choose your drink. 4. Pay at the cashier. 5. Customize your toppings. 6. Enjoy. Our order was ready at the takeout pick up area next to the cashier. There is also an area to grab utensils and sauces/toppings. The takeout containers kept the noodles separate from the broth, so the noodles were not soggy. Smart. I will say there was minimal beef broth, and curry sauce and wish there was a little bit more. My daughter ordered the beef udon which was quite delicious. The caramelized onions added a nice hint of sweetness to be udon dish. I got the curry udon and added fresh vegetables to my order and as usual the curry was tasty but didn't have enough sauce. Marugame always hits the spot if you're craving soup (esp after a climbing sesh just 5 min away). Around 1:30pm on a Sunday tho, it was busy! All the tables were taken, but luckily were able to snag a table for 5. The line was probably like 8 parties in deep, but it goes fast because they have an efficient system (similar to a factory line lol). Essentially the first step is to order what udon soup you'd like, what size, and if you want all the complimentary toppings (tempura flakes, green onions) or want to add any (spice ball, egg, etc). Then the tempura sides are self serve and they charge you at the end. -Beef, regular ($11.65): I'm actually not a big fan of the meat bc it's sweeter than I would like. I would just get the regular Kake next time Tempura squid has a slight chew to it, and the shrimp is fresh tasting. Dipped in the warm tempura sauce is perf! - BK, large ($7.29): Simple and tasty. Chicken Tempura is nothin special imo. My only gripe is that at this time, they're slow to stock on their tempura. I love their concept. Its fresh made Udon Noodles. You pick your broth & toppings or select from their signature styles. Although noodles are not hand made, they are fresh made by machine then combined with the broth to serve. I tried the Curry Nikutama Sanuki style. It was delicious. Curry was mild, not bad at all. Fresh noodles, green onion and the boiled egg is the chefs kiss. Its walk-up counter with assembly line set up for personalization. No servers at table service. You order, pay and take your food. I previously reviewed the West LA location, which reminded me of udon shops in Kobe (Japan). The Torrance location has a different vibe, it a bit more sleek, but the servings are still very good. The udon continues to be the "good stuff," quality noodles with the right amount of chewiness. The kake udon broth complements the udon well, light and not overly salty. I highly recommend adding a scoop of the grated ginger. I've tried the curry udon, it was good but I prefer the lighter kake broth. The tempura is also quite good and surprisingly reasonable for what you get. The chicken tempura continues to be a star, dark meat that's tender and juicy. The shrimp has improved, there's more meat and a bit less batter. My parents are both from Japan and approve this meal. It's not the same as what you'll get in nearby Gardena, but it doesn't have to be. Definitely worth a visit. read more

The lady who made our bowls was super friendly and nice. She was quick and we were out the line. However, the tables were absolutely disgusting and covered with liquid and food and our tray was probably NOT cleaned because we found egg whites when we didn't order eggs. Do I want to know how long the egg whites were sitting there? Probably not. There were a lot of staff working just literally standing in one spot and zoning out. And I've been waiting to try them for ages ever since my foodie buddy Michelle W. reviewed the Sawtelle location, noting tech is used to executing a perfect bowl of udon. The restaurant was still in its soft opening days when I first ordered takeout: 03/21/24: The online order system menu differs from physical menu availability, & staff manning the phone doesn't take phone orders even with kiosk & online system issues, so I had to come in the restaurant to place my order at the register & waste extra time when I could be working. They use a Chipotle-style assembly line ordering format with a cubicle wall to pick-up takeout orders. I opted for the udon bowl to be packed separately so each ingredient retains its flavor & the egg unbroken. In addition to an exasperated order, I checked my bag at a red light & had to turn back for the missing fireball sauce, & noticed my refreshing calamansi-ade was more ice than drink but it was good & recommended. The noods were stuck together (extra time from driving back) & gummy (overcooked); the udon sauce was tepid & mild in flavor, not flavor packed as claimed; the beef was a little overcooked/dry if a bit bland; the croquette was nice & crisp, but needed to properly drain or blot off the excess oil; only the egg was a perfect soft boil so you get that yolk ooze to coat the noodles & beef when it's broken. Overall, it was a poor 1st experience/impression. I chalked it up the experience to soft opening blues & came back 1 year later. The online system works! I mostly repeated the same order & a large udon order; bok choy is no longer on the menu & added sweet potato. They're no Sanuki no Sato... Marugame's udon is decent for a takeout order, & the sauce/broth is alright. The large had more sweet beef but it looked to be the same amount of udon? I liked the crisp croquette & sweet potato, but it's a stretch for 1 small piece of root at $1.95 (especially when a whole potato is the same price or less) or for the other sides. Yikes! Nikitama's sweet beef was tender & not dry on the 2nd go. The menu offers a decent selection of udons with a couple of rice bowls, & a good selection of tempura & sides; however the online menu doesn't match their POS system (like bok choy being unavailable). Price points are fare for the mains, but feel like I'm being gouged for the tempura & sides ($2 for 1/2 egg?!). Or maybe I haven't focused on ramen dining that I'm out of touch? Takeout is a-ok. I believe Marugame Udon would a better dine-in experience than takeout... just not sure when I would return. It's in a convenient location on the corner of Hawthorne Blvd & Torrance Blvd (where the old Marie Callanders was) with plenty of free parking. You order at a cafeteria style line so you get to watch them make your bowl and pick what you want added, or left out LOL Then you move along and can pickup some sides and drinks before you checkout ant the end. The staff are very helpful if you're not sure what you want or how to order. But they are also quick and the line moves right along. The seating area is good sized and kept cleared & clean. There are also some tables outside if the weather is nice. I had the Tonkotsu Pork Broth & my Son the Curry Nikutama plus we both had some potato tempura yum :) Both bowls were delicious with rich flavorful broth and the noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right bite to them. This is my first time trying the tamagotoji rice bowl and this is one of my favorite spots to visit when searching for Japanese food in Torrance! Not only does the restaurant have a cute playground for kids to play in, the place is also very cozy and comfortable. I come to this location very often. I love it here because the restaurant is way larger, so even when they're really busy, there's always seating. I love that they also have additional outdoor seating to accommodate everyone. I've been to a couple of the other locations, and seating/ walking around the store seemed to be a problem there, so having the privilege to not worry about seating here is just perfect. The workers here are very up beat and high energy. That guy Allen always has a smile on his face and is welcoming every time I get to the counter. Casual spot that serves fresh udon noodle soups and fresh fried tempura items. I know Marugame udon has been around for many years primarily in the downtown LA area, so it's great to see a location in the South Bay. You can expect to line up near the front where you'll see the menu, and there's different udon noodle flavors some more of a traditional soup and others more a "sauce" which gives more of a strong flavor My go to is the Nikutama - and you can order a large or regular. Today I decided to share with my husband and get a large with egg on the side since he doesn't like eggs. They'll take a portion of the udon noodles and boil it for you as they prepare your broth of choice. I ask for the tempura and green onion toppings. The next steps is more or self service of assorted tempura options. I always get the potato croquette, but really love their shrimp tempura, zucchini and sweet potato tempura. I like their egg tamago tempura but it is more of a sweet egg taste, as a heads up. I've had their matcha in the past and it's nice and refreshing, good as a once in a while treat since it's $4.50. Once I pay for my meal, I grab their tempura sauce and put it in a sauce bowl. It will be served warm. Love going here for a casual lunch or dinner - to me it's a great first date spot or a place to go with others, or even by yourself. You can stay as long or as short as you need to.
