    yasai kakiage

Came here on a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint. This was a homey udon spot, very minimal yet upscale interior. I got the yasai kakiage, which is a regular hot udon with tempura vegetables. The udon came out piping and had a delicate umami and sweet flavor. The noodles were bouncy, just like all udon should be. The tempura was crispy although a little oily, but I didn't mind. It was a nice textural change from drinking the soup. We managed to get seated within 10 minutes without a reservation, but it was tight, so maybe try to get a reservation if you want to go on a busier day.

I walked in on a random weekday night and was delighted that there was immediate bar seating for one. I started with the chicken karaage which was very crispy and juicy; the portions of chicken were also fairly large. I highly recommend ordering this. For the Niku Udon, I thought the udon was freshly cut and white chewy, and they worked well with the broth and the different meats (short rib, tendon, tripe). I especially liked the short rib which was super tender and tasty combined with the broth. They give a reasonable portion of meat but I wish they gave 50%+ more udon, for $30 I feel like I barely got any udon which was a bit disappointing. I also am not sure if the additional spice I got enhanced the flavor of the broth very much. Nonetheless Raku was a great experience, the service was relatively fast and the food was good. 4.7/5

Would definitely recommend making reservations or coming during off peak hours since it can get really crowded with long wait times. I got the chicken as an appetizer and thought it was good, but could be more tender and juicy. The udon itself though was delicious and had a lot of depth to its flavor. The meat was very tender and they give a big bowl. I even took the leftover soup back with me so I could eat it with lunch the next day! Would definitely recommend this place and would come back again!

Still one of my go to spots in the city, only ever been to the soho one. The dishes are all flavorful and the udon texture just seems so fresh. The soups always come out super fast and steaming hot. My friend still hasn't figured out how to get the egg drop soup and not almost burn her tongue, eating it quickly. This time I tried the Zaru cold udon and really liked it. The wasabi to add to the sauce was a great addition to change the texture, next time I would just add tempura to have more crunch texture in addition to the tempura shiso leaf.

Great udon texture. Beef broth was good. My tempura was fried perfectly. Super solid and zero complaints.

Raku has been my go-to restaurant for cold weather, celebrations, any occasion. It's my favorite udon in NY. This location has more seating, yet still popular. They do stress the seating time limit, but it was ample amount to enjoy dinner. I love that the broth arrives very hot, and warming. The flavors are refreshing and the handmade noodle texture is bouncy. I've tried their different hot and cold udon, and enjoyed them all.

Raku is the staple in NYC for quality udon. My go to here is the fried chicken and Niku Udon. The chicken tatsuta-age is perfectly cooked with a light fry and super juicy thigh meat which comes with a spicy mayo sauce. The udon broth is perfectly balanced with depths of flavor but also light in nature so I can slurp on it forever. The udon noodles is really the star of the show with perfect consistency, chewiness, and bite. I would however skip out on the salmon pressed sushi and the eel don as those were average at best. I will be back to try the the other hot and cold udon's in the future as they really are the stars for the show.

What a delivery... the bowl was quite large.

I didn't have the highest hope since I had less than stellar experience at their other location, but Raku SoHo surprised me. I walked in without a reservation at 3 in the afternoon for a weirdly timed lunch. The place was absolutely still full of people, though there were enough seats at the bar that I could squeeze in without waiting. The turnover was impressively quick, though, there was a constant stream of people popping in and out the entire time I was there. I went with the veggie tempura hot udon since it was a chilly day out. I was expecting a little small plate of veggie tempura and was shocked at the little hill that was piled up on a plate over my udon bowl. The hot udon comes with this nice thick chewy noodles that reminds me of pillowy rice cakes. The tempura was very airy and crispy. I was particularly fishing for all of the burdock, as the fragrant root is difficult to find in dishes in the States. The soup stayed fairly hot during the entire time I was savoring it. It was a little bit salty, but perfect to eat alongside the thick udon noodles and the crunchy tempura. I threw in some pieces of tempura in the soup so that the crunchy bits soak up soup and become these delicious mushy toppings by the end. Though the restaurant was very busy, I didn't feel rushed at all. There were some solo diners who were even working on their laptops at the bar. The bartender was especially sweet and attentive. I got two pieces of frozen grapes with my meal. Overall, I think I jive better with the hot udon at Raku, and I'm glad I gave them another try after not such great experience with the cold udon.

New discovery - the eggplant appetizer is sooo good. The ground pork flavor is so perfectly savory and balanced with the texture of the eggplant I get the ebiten every time and it comes with two shrimp tempura and this time it came with an eggplant tempura. I don't care for the ume though personally. When I came with another person, adding on one side of veggie tempura to share is perfect. U can also share one side of Wakame. Got the poached egg but honestly would prob skip next time unless they do a soft boiled egg

Have heard only great things about Raku and was excited to try for the first time! We got to the restaurant about 10 minutes after opening and got seated right away - there were already a couple of tables seated but upon getting our food, there was a line outside. The Gyunan Udon was piping hot and comforting to have on a cold day - the noodles were also fresh and chewy. Would recommend adding the poached egg for a nice creamy touch towards the end of your meal.

Came here on a Sunday and although I didn't have a reservation, they were able to accommodate my party of 5 when we arrived right when they open. I ordered their kani ankake and throughly enjoyed it. The broth was flavorful, hearty, umami, and just perfect for a chilly fall today. The udon had a gentle chew, but springy and tender. The only thing is the crab meat may not be the freshest. My kids ordered their chicken kaarage udon and the kaarage was perfectly fried, moist, juicy and well marinated. Their chicken kaarage curry udon was also flavorful. The broth is a little thick and had a little kick to it. Because it's hard to wash curry, we were provided a bib to protect our clothing and I really appreciate their attention to details. Our server was friendly, attentive, and was always one step ahead to tend to our needs. Overall, their udon is solid and they offer a wide selection of hot or cold udon which is nice because you can choose depending on the weather. We will be back.

Made a reservation with a friend, who had been coming here at least once a month for some comfort udon. The restaurant itself gave cozy and intimate vibes, and I imagine it would be great for a date here! Out of all the recommendations she gave me, I went for their Ebiten, which had the shrimp tempura and salted Japanese plums on the side. She also ended up ordering the same. The udon was absolutely incredible! The broth was rich and deeply flavorful, the noodles were perfectly cooked, and the tempura shrimp was a crispy side. In a way, the broth tasted quite "clean" and had me sipping until the last drop. Raku really nailed the balance of simplicity and quality, as I could taste how much care went into each bowl. Also, great service. One of my favorite udon spots in the city!

    Amy K.

One of the best udon places I've tried! I highly recommend the Wagyu tataki as an appetizer. It was perfectly chewy and well-balanced with ginger and scallions. I believe the sauce had a hint of yuzu. For the udon, we tried the hot hamaguri udon and the cold Kami maze udon. Both were unique, and I can understand why the hot udon is so popular. The broth was unlike anything I've had before! If you're a seafood lover, you'll love the broth, which is full of seafood flavors. I highly recommend this spot! It's located in the SoHo area, making it perfect for a winter meal, whether before or after shopping!

There was nothing on that menu that let us down. We started with two Calpico sodas, which are always a solid choice. My wife had the Omu Soba and loved it. I went with the Tonkatsu Ramen and that dish was everything. Rich, satisfying, the kind of bowl you do not want to end. We also shared the Kalbi, which are Korean short ribs, and they were outstanding. All three of us were on the same page about those. My son added two salmon tacos to the mix. He enjoyed them but said they did not hit quite as hard as his Mew Special Roll, which was clearly the standout of his night. It features raw tuna and what I believe is a combination of salmon and seared salmon on top. Either way, that sear flavor is really good. Worth trying if you get the chance. The space was lively and busy, which gave it a great energy. We ended up at a long communal table with another couple, but it never felt cramped or uncomfortable. There was enough room to breathe and enjoy the meal. My son mentioned his back felt a little tight from the seating, but that was a minor thing in an otherwise great night. Even before the food arrives, the restaurant leaves a strong impression with its stunning Japanese-inspired interior. The space is beautifully designed, blending warmth and elegance in a way that feels both inviting and refined. From the soft lighting to the natural wood accents and thoughtfully arranged decor, everything about the atmosphere feels intentional. It captures the intimate charm of a traditional izakaya while still feeling modern and stylish, making it a wonderful setting for anything from a casual dinner to a more special night out. The food more than lived up to the beauty of the space. One of the first highlights was the salmon onigiri, a dish that proved how satisfying simplicity can be when it is done well. The rice was soft, fresh, and perfectly formed, holding together without feeling too compact, while the salmon added a savory richness that made each bite feel comforting and flavorful. It was balanced, delicate, and deeply satisfying in a way that made it memorable despite its simplicity. The seared salmon salad was another standout. The salmon itself was beautifully prepared, with a lightly seared exterior that gave it a subtle crispness, while the inside remained tender, buttery, and smooth. That contrast in texture made the dish especially enjoyable. Paired with the freshness of the salad, it felt light and refreshing, yet still substantial enough to feel like more than just a side dish. It was a dish that managed to feel both clean and indulgent at the same time. The grilled squid was particularly impressive and easily one of the most memorable items of the meal. Squid can often be difficult to get right, as it can become rubbery or overly chewy if even slightly overcooked, but that was absolutely not the case here. The texture was spectacular--tender, delicate, and pleasantly springy without any toughness. Each bite had a light smokiness from the grill that added depth, while the squid itself retained its natural sweetness. It was expertly prepared and showcased a level of precision that really stood out. For the main courses, both the Tonkatsu Ramen and the Black Pepper Ramen delivered distinct experiences, each with its own appeal. The Tonkatsu Ramen was deeply comforting and satisfying, with a broth that had a rich, velvety texture and a full-bodied depth that coated the palate beautifully. It felt smooth, hearty, and luxurious without being too heavy. The noodles had an ideal texture as well--firm enough to provide a satisfying bite, yet soft enough to soak up the broth and integrate perfectly into the dish. Altogether, it was a bowl that felt warming, balanced, and incredibly comforting. The Black Pepper Ramen, on the other hand, brought a bolder and more assertive flavor profile. The broth had a smooth, glossy texture, and the noodles again had a pleasing chew that gave the dish structure and substance. The black pepper added an unmistakable warmth and aromatic intensity that made the ramen stand out immediately. It was flavorful and memorable, though the pepper was slightly overwhelming at times. A bit less black pepper would have allowed the other flavors in the broth to come through more clearly and created a more balanced bowl. Even so, the ramen was still enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate strong, pepper-forward flavors. Overall, Izakaya Fuku is a restaurant that succeeds on every level. The stunning Japanese interior creates an atmosphere that feels both immersive and elegant, while the food reflects a real attention to detail in both flavor and texture. From the comforting salmon onigiri, to the fresh and beautifully prepared seared salmon salad, to the expertly grilled squid with its exceptional texture, and finally the rich and satisfying ramen dishes, every part of the meal felt carefully executed. It is a place that offers not just excellent food, but a complete dining experience, and it is well worth visiting for anyone looking for standout Japanese cuisine in New York.

I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. Their location is a little hidden, it's on the second floor above Soba Noodle Azuma on 55th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, closer to 8th. You have to go up a stairwell on the side. Getting to the food, their focus is on meat, seafood and vegetable skewers though they also have a variety of appetizers, rice bowls and noodles, and dessert. The meats and veggies are grilled over charcoal while basted with "tare", a house-made sauce that adds a level of umami to the caramelized grill flavors. Recently I got a handful of skewers for takeout, including: - Ebi (shrimp) $8 x 2: the shrimp were cooked just right, tender and juicy, yum! - Hotate Eringi (scallop and oyster mushrooms) $8 x 2: the textures of the oyster mushrooms and scallop pieces complemented each other, and were kinda similar. Another tasty offering. - Negi pon (pork belly with scallions) $7: I'm not a huge fan of pork belly in general, though they grilled it well here and chopped scallions added a little spicy tickle. While not the cheapest for skewers that you can find, (and inflation hasn't helped,) their flavors are authentic and their quality and consistency is key here. I'm glad it's still here since there seems to be fewer and fewer good yakitori spots in Manhattan these days. They used to have another location in the city though I believe this closed pre-pandemic, however from their website they now have another location in Boston. This was also the sister restaurant to Ramen Totto which had four locations at one point though all have shuttered as well. Hope this location stays around for a long time!

The service was excellent, and the owner was incredibly friendly, taking the time to give us a detailed introduction to the story and origins of French Ramen. We ordered the Special Combo, and the moment it arrived, my eyes lit up. The plating was a beautiful blend of French and Japanese influences--elegant, refined, and perfectly aligned with my taste. Seeing such thoughtfully presented dishes instantly elevated the entire dining experience. It truly lives up to the name "French Ramen." The Lobster Ramen had an incredibly rich, naturally sweet, and flavorful broth. The noodles were perfectly springy with a satisfying texture (wide noodles, similar to fettuccine). The Crab Ramen with Truffle featured a deeply aromatic broth with a pronounced truffle flavor, paired with classic Japanese-style ramen noodles that were equally enjoyable. The Spicy Salmon Ramen also came with wide noodles (similar to fettuccine), which I personally loved since I prefer a chewier texture. The broth was more on the mild side compared to the other dishes, but still enjoyable. Across all dishes, the seafood was fresh, beautifully presented, and of high quality. The attention to detail in both presentation and flavor made the experience feel refined and special--it was truly a joy to dine here. We were also treated to a glass of red wine by the owner, which added an extra touch of warmth and hospitality and perfectly complemented the "French" aspect of the experience. The fried chicken wings were crispy, hot, and delicious. The fried salmon rice was also excellent--the fish was perfectly crispy, and the rice was flavorful and well-seasoned. For dessert, we were served assorted mochi ice cream along with a rich terrine de chocolat. From start to finish, the meal was both visually stunning and delicious. It was a truly delightful dining experience. My entire family gives it 5 stars! I will definitely be returning to Salmon Noodle 3.0 and highly recommend it. If you love French cuisine, this is a must-try. It's also perfect for a romantic date night. French Ramen offers a unique and refreshing twist that's absolutely worth experiencing. P.S. The owner mentioned they are planning to introduce a French-style teppanyaki menu. I'm not sure whether it will be traditional or with a French twist, but my family and I are very excited and look forward to making a reservation to try it.

Potato beef salad - felt too heavy and thick, not impressed with the flavor…read more Truffle crab ramen with soft shell crab - tasted interesting in the beginning, but half way through it started to taste boring and too heavy/salty. The sides didn't really add much to it. The sauce on the bowl seemed pointless and just gets in the way. Noodles texture was perfect. Modern comfortable interior. Service was great.
