We were in town for the week and made a point of making our way to Lanzhou Hand Pulled Noodles. It was a beautiful Friday in June so we walked from our Chelsea hotel and were seated immediately. We ordered the signature beef noodle dish with wide noodles, a pork "hamburger" , a coke and a Sapporo. The noodles arrived first and they looked great. We realized pretty quickly what the scissors are for: cutting the very long noodles before they were unmanageable getting them into your face or smaller dish. The noodles were nicely chewy and not too soft and the beef was tasty. The herbs and slices of crisp daikon were a nice addition and the broth was mildly spicy. I added more chili oil to my individual bowl. Nice! The pork burger was hot and had good flavor. Service was very friendly and prompt. The ambiance was quiet and calm. Yeah the quality's pretty great, I'd order a bowl again. Was the outdoor patio a quiet refreshing step outside of Manhattan's busy fast paced life? Yeah, this is where 1915 has all of their competitors beat. Most hand pulled joints are very functional, you go in, you order food on a cold stainless steel table, and you leave; 1915 you can take your time on an outdoor patio in the summer evening cooling temperature. It's a cute date spot. For the food, I order the Dry Pork Noodles and the wifey got something something spicy. She enjoys the fact that you can choose which noodle type because the type of people who like to come here have come with preferences for their noodles. I'm easy to please but I like the flexibility. And I'm glad I didn't get the spicy-- cause they didn't come to play. She chose medium and as instantly punishing as it was, it had this nice kinda sharp sour kick to it. Super fast delivery--literally the quickest that the food can even be prepared! $17 Braised beef noodle soup is satisfying and filling. Big portion--they give you a loooot of broth and noodles! Look at the enormous container of broth! Easily can split into two normal sized portions. The broth was a bit too fatty for my liking. Once mixed with noodles, it became better. Additional $5 for added braised beef was worth it--the total amount of food could easily feed two or serve as two meals for one. Braised beef was flavorful and juicy--appreciated the quality. I asked for not spicy, yet the broth and the beef were spicy--I was dishing out the red peppe flakes and large chunks of ginger. We originally tried to go to 1915 Hand Pulled Noodles in Chinatown, but the line was long, so we pivoted and got our hair blown out around the corner instead. No regrets though, because we ended up going to their Midtown location near our hotel, which is actually the original. We ordered the braised dry noodles with the prism-style noodles (wide, chewy, and so satisfying) and the spicy noodle soup with thin noodles. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. The broth was rich and well-seasoned, and the noodle textures really stood out in both dishes. I'd skip adding the egg next time since it didn't add anything special. They also offer yuzu sake, and we tried the Yuzumon, which paired really well with both the soup and the dry noodles. If you like heat, you can ask for extra spice from the back. Also, I love their cold noodle, as well. Well priced overall. There may be a might so try to avoid lunch and dinner rush. I've dined here multiple times and I will probably come back to dine in. One of my favorite Chinese noodle establishments in the city that is reliable, affordable, and consistent. I still prefer the Chinatown location as that one is a wee bit bigger (both restaurants are still quite small/a tight fit) and offers complimentary tap water. I don't understand how a restaurant that has a 99.999% spicy menu doesn't offer complimentary tap water, but I guess it is a smart tactic to get someone to pay for a beverage, would recommend BYOB. We ordered: Special Dry Pork Noodles w/Marinated Egg Stewed Beef Tripe Noodles w/Marinated Egg Scallion Pancake The marinated egg is not like the Japanese jammy ramen egg so I'd opt out of this additional cost. The photo vs. what you actually get for the pancake look very different, the appetizer itself is quite thin and you can't really see any scallions. We've always wanted to try the Prism noodle type and oddly enough it's not the thickest but rather the form is twisted like a prism, so not that impressive. There are some nooks and crannies that are comparable between this 1915 location and the Chinatown 1915 location-this one seems more forgiving and less strict on noodle types, but doesn't offer complimentary water. It is crowded in the restaurant but they do a good job of being efficient in getting people in and out! read more

As a chinese american from LA who grew up in the 626, this place gets my stamp of approval! I got the dry beef noodle and wow it was amazing. it is so flavorful, so garlicky and spicy and just seasoned to perfection. The meat was tender and delicious and the noodles were absolutely amazing, chewy and bouncy. Wow, talk about an amazing meal! 1915 is the quintessential hole in the wall spot; so unassuming from the outside, but serving up culinary gold once you get to your seat. The space is small, don't expect much from the ambiance. But it is cool to be able to see into the kitchen, you can see noodles being hand pulled in real time. The lamb burger was the best I've had. Unlike other places serving similar cuisine, the bun here was doughy and light, and the lamb was perfectly spiced. The signature beef noodles were great. There are 6 different noodle textures to choose from - must like choosing pasta shapes for your sauce! The shapes range from thin to extra wide. We have been to the Chinatown location as well and it is pretty comparable. We typically get the same thing - two bowls of noodles and extra noodles for the kid. We got the Traditional Steamed Pork Buns, Pork Chinese Hamburger, Braised Beef NoodleSoup, and the Pickled Cabbage Beef Noodles Soup, and everything tasted incredible on a cold winter day. The flavor of the broth plus the tenderness of the beef plus the texture of the noodles was EVERYTHING I could have hoped for! I was craving some hand-pulled noodles, so I decided to check out this restaurant! There were a few parties waiting outside, but since I was dining solo, I was able to grab a seat at the bar next to the kitchen. I actually really liked my spot--it gave me a great view of the chefs hand-pulling noodles and preparing dishes while I waited for my food. I ordered a lamb burger and the spicy oil noodles. The lamb burger came out quickly, and I have to say, it's the best Chinese lamb burger I've had in the city! I originally came for the noodles, but I almost always order a lamb burger when I visit hand-pulled noodle spots, so I stuck to that habit--and I'm so glad I did! The bun was incredibly fluffy, and the braised lamb inside was tender, making every bite a perfect balance of meat and bread. As for the seared oil noodles, they were flavorful at first, but the spicy oil--loaded with fresh minced garlic--quickly overwhelmed my palate. I found myself pausing often to sip water just to balance out the intensity. While I loved the texture of the noodles, the sauce just wasn't my favorite (though if you're a garlic lover, you might enjoy it more than I did). Next time, I think I'll try one of their noodle soups instead. While I was eating, I saw the kitchen preparing dumplings, so I ordered the veggie dumplings to go. They were shaped like little leaves--so cute!--and packed with flavor. Honestly, they didn't even need the dipping sauce, but I still recommend pouring a bit on top--the sauce pairs beautifully with the seasoning in the filling. The original is our go to it comes with 3-4 pieces of beef and radish, topped off with chili oil scallion and cilantro. The line moved pretty quickly and our group was able to be seated and eat before they closed at 9 PM. I read a few reviews before coming in and they all mentioned how above and beyond the service was - I genuinely couldn't really imagine what that meant for a tiny fast service business - but wow it really is. I had a leg injury this year and am on the path to recovery but still limp a bit. The host insisted on carrying my suitcase and backpack out of the restaurant for me and down the stairs to the street. Such a kind offer when he had a bustling restaurant inside to tend to.
