Went to Ralph's with my team from work, for dinner. The dining area is a bit crowded b/c of the space available, but that's the only con about this place. Food is very good, service is excellent and you get a decent amount of food for the $$. This was my first time dining here and I loved it. Took a chance hoping for a great find in an area surrounded by chain restaurants. I had the veal parmigiano and a side salad. Neither were very interesting. The salad looked out of a bag and they threw a tomato on top. The veal was fine, but I wouldn't order it again. OK service,,my Reuben sandwich was good. However my daughter ordered chicken parm with her side of linguine Alfredo. As chef for 30 year I can tell you the chicken was breaded days ago and was tough and stri gy. My 13 year old had t poo ask me to cut it. And the Alfredo sauce broke cause they put it in the broiler with the chicken. Was never asked how our meals were once. Just if we wanted desert and here's your check. So the food was good, but there was AWFUL service. We were seated and it took us 30 minutes to get acknowledged. Then after only being there for an hour and a half, TRUE STORY, we were asked to LEAVE. The waitress had asked us to leave OR tell us how long until we were going to leave because they had a party of 10 waiting... which was actually a party of 6 that was seated right behind us.. while there were EMPTY tables in another area ready to seat at least 8. Never in my life have I ever been asked to leave a restaurant and be rushed out. We didn't even stay there that long. I don't care how long a PAYING customer is sitting at their table, you DO NOT ask them to leave. SO RUDE. They didn't even apologize for it and deemed it acceptable. Never going back. We were seated at a table by the front door. The minute I walked in I smelled cigarette smoke. I looked around and of course there was no smoking in the restaurant. I coughed all night as I am extremely allergic to cigarette smoke as it is a pollutant. I felt like I was surrounded by smoke. Come to find out when I left that people (not sure if they were patrons, wait staff or kitchen staff) were smoking right in front of the resaurant by the front door. The door was opening all night long so all that smoke was just coming right in the door to the restaurant. So a word of advice to the owners: Put up a sign up in front "NO SMOKING" outside so people could enjoy their meals without the taste of cigarette smoke in their food. Or put up a wall or shield by the side of the building so the smoke don't travel in through the door. Our waitress was marvelous and very attentive. read more

Don't let the somewhat shabby appearance of the entrance fool you. I admit we were concerned but I didn't want to drive any farther so we bit the bullet and went in anyway. It's a good thing we did. Ralph's is an "old" style restaurant with dark paneling, formica topped tables and metal but comfortable chairs. The house wine was reasonable and for once there was more choice besides the usual Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay or Chianti. A House Shiraz is a first for me. The menu is extensive with pizza, pasta, seafood, chicken and beef. After a shared hot pretzel appetizer with plenty of cheddar cheese dip, I just couldn't pass up a grilled American cheese sandwich that was as good as my mother used to make. My companion had boneless chicken wings and she loved them. The restaurant was surprisingly busy on a Tuesday night but the service was still excellent. We weren't rushed through our wine and appetizer but not forgotten either. Everything on the menu was reasonable and I've spent a lot more money for a lot less and I now know why it was so busy. If you're in the SUNY Albany area, please try this very pleasant and friendly neighborhood restaurant. You won't be disappointed. read more

Been coming here for a few years now and not once have I been disappointed. By far the best wings in the area along with their pizza and linguini with clams. Rotating specials never disappoint. Awesome prices and amazing food and service. Waiters, waitresses, bar tenders, and entire staff always polite and prompt. Honestly I don't have one bad thing to say as they have been consistent each time. Even on take out the food is ready promptly so there is no further waiting with the time they say. An average American-Italian restaurant with decent cooking, old decor, and wonderful waitstaff. The restaurant is a standalone building on the side of Central Avenue, with a semi-large sign outside advertising the place. We came in, expecting exactly what I saw. There is a bar on one end and a restaurant on the other. The decor is old and may need new furniture. We were greeted by the owner (I think) who sat us down. We were waited on by an extremely friendly waitress who made us feel at home. The menu is pretty boring for a place that considers itself part Italian. The menu is mainly tavern food, with a few pasta dishes, sandwiches, and a few meat and seafood options. To start, get their wings. They are fresh, spicy, and absorb the sauce very well. They are served with celery and carrots, which were nice. The pasta entrees come with a soup or salad, so I got the New England Clam Chowder. There weren't many clams in it, but the soup tasted very good with great seasoning. There were a ton of vegetables as well, which wasn't expected, but you can't go wrong with vegetables. For entrees, either get their large pizzas or their sandwiches. They are a great deal and are very filling, along with their burgers. I ordered the make your own pasta option, which I thought would be satisfying. I ordered the equivalent of a baked ziti with a meatball, which was ziti noodles, the marinara sauce, a meatball, and baked mozzarella cheese. The pasta was obviously store bought, which I can't really complain too much about since I never expected the quality of the food to be exemplary. But since it was store bought, the pasta broke easily and it didn't absorb the sauce, so every once in a while I got a bland bite of noodle. The sauce was a bit spicy, which I enjoyed. You should get it baked if ordering, since it is only $1.50 and it elevates the dish. The meatball was a slightly undercooked, but it tasted quite nice. I was going to get the linguini with clam sauce, but the menu specified that it came with 6 clams, so I thought that it wasn't a good deal. The make your own pasta dish is the best option, just don't get it with ziti. Overall, this was a decent place to go, but not the greatest place if visiting the area for a short visit. read more

Old school cheep Italian. And I say "cheep" in a positive way. Excellent quality for the cost. Sure it's a little cramped and the flatware was probably $2.99 for 50 dz but the food was mighty tasty and expertly prepared. Fresh and perfect. Went here for the first time in a long time. Service was excellent and the food was good. If you're a mozzarella stick and raspberry sauce fan, you absolutely have to try the ones at Ralph's. We have been Ralph's regulars for 15 plus years. Food is decent, not great but not bad.. The salads could use some improvement, but otherwise ok. Why do I give it 4 stars you say? The inside is small, and the "waiting area" is a cramped cattle call. To start we did not have a reservation and were told "you're lucky you came now, we inquired and were told they have many reservations and others are put on a waiting list for when a table is available." I found the hostess to be a bit rude. The waitress was very nice and pleasant. On to the meals, I ordered the chicken francaise, I was corrected on the pronunciation, it was okay. I found it to be overdone, dry and hard to cut, smothered in a lemon cream sauce. My husband had the scallops Parmesan which some were tough and chewy (rubbery). You need to specify if you want the marinara, the menu says so, and I thought it was nothing spectacular. The bread was hard like it was sitting out too long. We will probably try this place again but will make a reservation and maybe our meal won't be as disappointing. You have to know what to order and what not to here at Ralph's. It's a tavern, so appetizers, wings and pizza are a sure bet. This is my go to place when I'm craving a cesear salad - I love their cesear salad, their dressing is not cream based. Also love that I can get pasta with Alfredo marinara and then I add veggies to the pasta instead of meat. What I won't order here (from past experience) is anything that has the word parm in it. Whenever I can get to the Albany, NY area, I go to Ralph's Tavern. Entering the front door, you will find a tavern on the right side and a locally owned restaurant on the left side. This place is always crowded. They do accept reservations. They have delicious soups at this restaurant. All of the other food that I have tried is fine, but this restaurant shines when it comes to making the soup of the day. The prices are reasonable and the service is prompt and efficient. You are not paying for cutesy decor just the food and the soup alone would make a stop in Albany well worth the effort for anyone in the general area of Albany/Colonie.
