The chicken ramen was decent enough. I appreciated that there were two eggs (one full egg). The noodles were down at the bottom and I found them overpowered by the shoots and elephant ears on top. I wasn't very hungry to begin with but they are prepared with to go plastic bowls so you can take the rest with you. The chicken karage was more batter than chicken. It has bean sprouts which is something different. Mild spice is exactly that. You do have to pay extra for nori which I did not appreciate. The black garlic did not come with meat which I am not accustomed to. Broth was not special. I would skip in this one Tonkatsu was a complete disappointment. First of all, they are half moon shaped and not the full circle that they should be. Filling is hard. Restaurant quality tonkatsu does not get hard if you have it as an appetizer and don't Finnish them by the end of your meal. Sauce is ok, not special. Skip this. Probably won't be returning. Food is very similar to the one in Downtown Pleasanton, minus the parking woes. You order at the counter and food is delivered to your table. The food came out super quickly. We ordered almost the same things. Nearly all of the tables were full at dinnertime on a Saturday evening. Lots of families with small kids, which is what you'd expect for this area. The Tonkotsu ramen ($11.50) was pretty good, but the broth not as fatty or salty as more authentic ramen places. Portion size was medium. We added extra noodles for $2.50 (one order for two of us) and it filled us up. Noodles are a bit softer than I'd like, but that's a small gripe. Their soft boiled tea eggs are good and I wished we got an extra for $1. The tonkotsu ramen also had wood ear fungus, bamboo shoots, and fish cake. The pork slices were not melt-in-your-mouth tender, but flavorful. DH's black garlic ramen ($11.50) was salty and had a lot of garlic cloves in it. He thought it was saltier than the Downtown Pleas location. The black garlic ramen doesn't come with a tea egg, so add one! There's a 20% off coupon in the My Town mailer for orders over $20. Ramen 101 lives up to its namesake, very basic ramen that gives you quite a bit for the price. Ramen places are hit or miss in the Tri-Valley. Often there's a tradeoff between price, quality, and quantity. FOOD A bowl of ramen is about $10-$12 and comes loaded with toppings. You may see seaweed, a boiled egg, bamboo shoots, and maybe corn depending on what you order. You can always add more toppings for $1 each. Quality-wise, I would say average since the two large pork pieces were a bit firmer than I liked and not melt-in-your-mouth tender. I'm not an expert on ramen, so I don't know how the ramen compares to "traditional" noodles or "authentic" broth. But, I thought the broth and the noodles were fine, especially taking into account that I took the ramen home to eat. The noodles, pork, soft-boiled egg, bean sprouts, mushroom, green onion and bamboo shoots came in one container, and the broth came in another. It took a little doing to get the noodles separated after the broth was added, but the texture was good. The egg was perfectly soft-boiled. The pork came in two pieces, each about 2-1/2" in diameter, and was fairly tender and tasty. We often reheat the broth in the microwave to make it piping hot (remember that it will cool some when you combine the ingredients!). We've tried the tonkatsu, miso, shoyu and black garlic ramen, in non-spicy, mild and medium levels of spiciness. If you don't want any spiciness, make sure you order "non-spicy" instead of "mild." My favorite is the tonkatsu style, but all four are good. So, for a take home noodle meal, I think Ramen 101 is fine, and I would normally give a restaurant like this 4 stars. But here's why I'm awarding five stars. About a month ago, we ordered 3 servings of ramen, and they forgot to include the hard-boiled eggs. My wife called the restaurant to let them know, and the person who answered the phone said that he would make sure we have extra eggs the next time. We thought, yeah, right. About a month passed, and we ordered 3 bowls of ramen again. When we picked up the order, the server said that he had put our receipt from last time on the wall, and he recognized the name and added extra eggs to our order this time. The broth was tasty and the pork cuts included we're delicious. The only thing I can say I would add is more spice. Finally decided to try this place out after months of driving by. It happened to be a very busy Wednesday or maybe they are constantly crowded at lunch. We happened to snag the last seat available (it is quite a small space). Two parties arrived after we did and had to be put on a wait list. The tables are quite small so, for this reason, perhaps this would not be good for groups. But for a fast and cheap meal? Definitely! We ordered 2 ramen bowls and 2 chicken rice bowls for the kids. Food came out hot, quickly and was very filling (generous portions; especially the rice bowls). Service was decent but since they were fairly busy, we had to grab our own waters and refills. We went to the San Leandro location once and although the experience wasn't horrific, the service combined with the food combined were not a good value. We were hoping that this second location would be better since they had the first location to work out the kinks. Walking in the door, the first thing that caught my eye was the hand written sign that said Please Wait to Be Seated. We stood at the counter, perused the menu board and placed our order with the order taker. We only presumed he was the order taker because he was standing behind the register with his mouth hanging open. He never greeted us, mumbled softly when he spoke, placed my receipt and credit card on the counter instead of handing them to me and never thanked me. Additionally, since he didn't offer to seat us, we sat ourselves. Water is self service and there is one dispenser with lemon slices and ice; the other has plain ice water. They are located on the counter facing the window looking out at the parking lot. Our order was delivered in two parts. First were the two bowls of ramen. Being that they were both the same size, I asked about the extra noodles and was told those were coming. They were delivered at the same time as the vegetable tempura. Seafood Ramen - 4 - Good flavor on the broth and the noodles had a good bite. Miso Ramen - 3 - Fairly good flavor but soup not hot enough. Tempura Vegetables - 3 - Reasonable sized order but not much variety of veg. We recognized Broccoli, Green Beans, maybe Zucchini? How about some Mushrooms? Pumpkin? Carrot? Onion? Bell Pepper? And handing dine*in customers Tempura Dipping Sauce in a 4oz container shows that you don't care enough to pour it into a small saucer to make it easier to dip the veg. Extra Noodles - 1 - Maybe I'm slowing down in my old age and don't eat fast enough anymore. The extra noodles came out of the cooking liquid and were drained and dumped into the bowl. I strongly suggest that they consider adding the same type of soup that the customer originally ordered. Yes, this will add to their food cost. So raise the price of extra noodles from $2.00 to $2.50. Noodles, by themselves, have a limited amount of flavor. Noodles sitting in soup absorb the flavor of the soup. Those extra noodles sat in the bowl, cooling off on top and turning into a blob on the bottom while I was eating the bowl that I ordered (look at my pictures). By the time I put the noodles into the remaining soup, the soup was lukewarm. Even after stirring and mixing, the first few bites of extra noodles were bland. We finally tried this place and .... Customer Service was poor. I was told to order first and get a table. Luckily there was one table available that seats 4 for my family to seat. There was a few people behind me that ordered after me and couldn't find a table to seat. 1 Star on that. He gave us bowls! so we asked the girl taking the order for small plates and she told the boy to get us small plates. Small and quaint, fast, good value describe this latest ramen addition to the Dublin restaurant scene. Ramen 101 is a quick way to get your Asian noodle and ramen fix in no time. Upon entering the small establishment, there is not a lot of free space to maneuver between the door and the cashier counter. There are about ten tables that can cater for parties of 2 to 4, and no more unless you are lucky enough to combine tables together. But good luck especially on a busy Friday or weekend evening. Their menu is simple with a combination of a number of ramen noodle options. It is nice that there are also a few rice dishes including unagi, and fried appetizer dishes such as fried squid, chicken, and oysters. On our latest visit we ordered take out with unagi rice dish, Shoyu ramen, and Tonkatsu ramen. At just under $10 for a typical ramen bowl and $6 for a side dish-sized unagi rice, the value is certainly there, however we've had better noodles elsewhere. Flavor is okay, ingredients are adequate, however, the noodles just don't measure up with their more rubbery and less tender texture. Service is satisfactory. With the busy dinner rush hour experienced on a Friday evening, the staff was quite attentive to get diners in and out. An employee was taking names down for dine in customers and placing their names on a wait list to situate them with a table by the time their food was ready. Because it was raining, it wasn't too crowded, but there were quite a few people eating in. I ordered the Black Garlic Ramen, Vegetable Ramen and Chicken Ramen. I ended up with the Black Garlic ramen which wasn't bad, but too much garlic is too much of a good thing for me. I will consider the Chicken Ramen next time since the grilled chicken was pretty good. Mediocre ramen at best. I gave this spot two tries, thinking maybe the first experience was a sad fluke. Sadly, it's just consistently...meh. The eggs were hardboiled and cold instead of your typical soft/runny egg and the meat was tough, overcooked, and flavorless. My friend and I both thought the broth was decent, but that's about it.
