But don't underestimate it because it's still really filling. I picked the shrimp tempura and potato croquette which I put directly in my soup because I like when it absorbs the flavor of the soup but there's a container that you can get it on the side. I love the light, yet rich taste of the broth and the dipping sauce and spices you can get on the side to complement it. I haven't been here in a few years. Maybe more. But earlier this week we were craving cold udon, having come back from Hawaii, and did a Yelp search. Who knew they had it here . Ordered takeout since we were so tired after tennis. It was nice that they have a seperate door to pick up take out so while I waited on the curbside DD ran into pick up. Easy peasy. When we got home we immediately inhaled it. Loved how they separated the filling from the udon and packed the broth separately. Poached egg was creamy still and blended well with the beef and noodles. We came back again yesterday but wanted to actually dine in. There were no longer long lines from when we last dined in years ago. The line went smoothly and the lady was quick and efficient to take our orders and even gathered Hubs' take out rice bowl for later. The gal at the pick up windown was also proficient as her job and even telling me my clams and ginger udon had just ran out so she gave me a number for my table. The tempura station was always one of my favorites. They just ran out of imitation crab but we snagged the last shrimp tempura. Also got a sweet potato and my favorite, pumpkin . 4/5 crunchy not too oily and naturally sweet. No sauce needed We found a table right away which was wiped clean. DD was half way through her udon when mine barely arrived. After the first sip of broth, it quickly reminded me of why we haven't been back in so long. Warm soup vs piping hot. That's why. Fresh cooked clams and butter ginger melted into the broth was a nice change from the usual. The taste was great and flavorful. Honestly, this is still my favorite Marugame Udon stop because it's so spacious and there's always seating available, even on a Sunday lunchtime hour these days. The FengShui is just so much better than other locations since the spot isn't directly facing the sun and you still get a good breeze walking inside. Staffs are decent and helpful as usual. Tempura is always a favorite here. Regular Nikutama Udon bowl with an egg is still affordable and fulfilling. This time, it felt like my regular bowl size had shrunk a bit, but the portions are still very slurpy good. Mushroom tempura and shrimp tempura plus the potato croquette is still legit and delicious. I have no complaints each time we stop by for a quick meal fix. Aisles are clean and organized. It's just not as crowded as it used to be anymore. The menu selections are surviving during high inflation times, especially for regular bowls under $15. I call it decent and affordable udon here. They provide hand crafted udon bowls, tempura and beverages from a theater kitchen thus allowing diners to watch while food is prepared. There is a building right across the street designated for parking as well as underground. We frequent this location because it's conveniently located close to the freeway and has a Tesla charging station just across the complex. They offer a wide variety of Ramen, rice plates, tempura and udon menu. Ordering can be done by the designated window. You can order from the menu and can customize your order based on what's available for add ons. Don't be intimidated by the long lines because it moves fast. Get a table and line up or simply have someone in your party save the table. In the 2 times we've been there, line wasn't long. This was recommended by a friend and I am glad we came here. This place is inside a mall on the ground floor. We didn't have any reservations and I don't even know if they take them. It was very busy but we were able to get a table of six of us. You get in line and order your food and pick your add ons in line. Then pay and they give you a number stand to get your food delivered. All the udon is made right in front of you. It is all scratch made in large pots and it is amazing to just watch them make it. I got the most popular, Nikutama which is the beef. Wow the Udon was amazing. The beef cooked perfectly. I loved it. My wife got the creamy broth with pork and it was good but she liked mine better. I got the nikutama, which is a delightfully sweet beef with a rich, deep, savory broth (and of course, tempura flakes, scallion and an egg!) We walked past this place 3 times today and so we decided to give it a try. They handmade the noodles in front of us while we were waiting in line to order. We got a Tan Tan and a beef noodle. My mom really enjoyed the Tan Tan. The beef was alright. It was as described, I just didn't love it. My biggest beef was with them seeing that I was holding my crying toddler, as my mom was next to pay. But they would not let me take a seat. They insisted on me waiting in the middle of the restaurant as my toddler was upset, while they cleaned the table, until my mom finished paying. But then someone else went to grab the table. So then they awkwardly had to make the other lady get up for us- thankfully I did not have to ask as I would have probably just left. I donno, I understand having rules, this one just seemed excessive and not efficient. Plus anyone with a toddler knows parents need grace. Not to mention it put a bad taste in my mouth and probably that of the other lady who got booted. To be honest though, the staff was super kind and courteous. A seasoned egg, juicy pork chasu in a creamy chicken broth. Hold the green onions please. Flavorful and a hunger satisfying udon. The noise level is loud because it's busy. The floors were a bit dirty with napkins, utensils and noodles on the floor. The tables needed wiping as the customers kept coming and going. (minus one star). But the dishes remain fresh and tasty. The tempura side dishes are crunchy and tasty as well. (5/5 stars) Service is limited here. Mostly self service. (4/5 stars). You clean your own plates and return trays and dishes to a designated location. Iced water is also self serve. Prices have gone up, but everything is still reasonably priced for today's market. There were plenty of tables available during Sunday past noon, so we took our best pick. We ordered the Nikutama Udon (simmered beef) which reminded me of sukiyaki, Creamy Broth Udon (pork chasu) which is reminiscent of ramen and our teen's Teriyaki Chicken Katsu rice bowl. My wife got a few pieces from the Tempura Bar (asparagus, shrimp & sweet potato) while I got fresh vegetables $2.99 for my bowl. Food was amazingly great for a fast-food setting such as this. This would probably be our new chain restaurant favorite in the Contra Costa County. Counter service with filling and reasonably priced dishes. We'll surely be back for more. read more

We finally got to try out this place! The food is pretty good, not the absolute best, but all of the food is served hot and fresh. You can see it being made and cooked there! There was a long line, but it moved quickly. Ordering is not that straightforward. We got some base udon, then added some toppings and sides. Here's what we got: Large Nikutama udon $15.99 - DH liked this. The broth is sweet and salty, sorta like teriyaki/sukiyaki flavor profile. Soft cooked egg was good. Large Creamy Tantan udon $12.45 - this seasonal item is a little spicy but if you can handle chili crisp, it is totally fine. It is definitely not as spicy as malatong. The broth is very thick and creamy. It only comes with half of a soft cooked egg. This one's good, loved the flavor combos, but you'll need to add more meat to make it filling. Wish I got a fried chicken side. Extra veggies $2.99 - DH and I split this one. It is a small container of basic boiled veggies things like cabbage. It is good filler but seemed very expensive for what it is. 2 Shrimp tempura $2.29 each - kids really like this one and even asked for more. But we were not gonna wait in line again! Extra noodles $2.99 - small container of extra noodles. Good for kids. I wish I took a photo of the sides and tempura. If you just get the large udon, it's not quite enough food for a filling lunch. I dinged them a star because it can get quite expensive if you add some tempura and sides. It is not quite as inexpensive as they advertise. We are light eaters and we could have definitely ordered more. Another soft boiled egg was three dollars and each slice of basic tempura was charged by the piece so it could be two dollars for one piece of tempura veggie! You can see how this could add up! It would be nice to get some combo package add-on for a little bit less per piece like one that includes two or three pieces of veggies and one piece of meat for a lower price. The restaurant itself had indoor and outdoor seating. It's kind of like a food hall atmosphere. You have to get your food before looking for a table. No saving tables, we saw staff regulating that. This is a fantastic quick udon place right in City Center - Bishop Ranch. The noodles are made right there in the front where you see them stirring it in a huge pot but the ordering and getting the udon is super fast and handled within 5-10 minutes. You can order the main dishes (~$11 for Regular bowl, ~$16 for Large bowl), and then add some add-ons which are placed almost like a cafeteria line (if you've ever eaten at a J&S or others on the east coast). Drinks are a little pricey, a can of soda is $2, but you can get water cups for free. They also have disposable soup spoons which are amazing. Tastes great, and didn't know they had an app until the next day where they emailed me due to paying with Apple Pay and kept my points from the night before! (App is made by Thanx). Awesome! This is a big restaurant with a lot of families. It is like an udon factory. As soon as I walk in, I see staff cooking big vats of udon next to the ordering station. The ordering station is very small. Only one man works there. You give your order and he will also make suggestions to help you out. I ordered a BK bowl with half a seasoned egg and one shrimp tempura and he suggested the two shrimp BK udon bowl. After he gave me my bowl of noodles with BK broth and half a cold seasoned egg, I moved on to the next station where I pick my tempura and pay. There was a line of people in front of me waiting to pick up their tempura and to pay. If you want more scallions then you must ask for it in line otherwise you can't get more scallions. There's a water station where you can pick up some ginger and tempura bits. The water station only allows one person to get water at one time so it is cumbersome. My 1.99 half a seasoned egg was ice cold. It's too bad they don't warm it up for you. The shrimp tempura was doughy and cold. The best part about my meal was the udon noodles itself. It was chewy and springy. The BK sauce was not too salty. It was slightly sour (umami flavored). It tasted like dashi mixed with soy sauce. My husband had the curry udon with sweet beef which they weighed before placing it into his bowl. They put a raw egg into his bowl and that egg is not soft boiled but runny. He still enjoyed his curry bowl. Afterwards, you bus your own dishes by putting away your black tray, throwing away your trash and putting the bowls on a shelf where an employee takes to wash. This is not a good date place because it's full of families and children but it is a great place if you want to have a comforting noodle dish. I like that you can customize your food and the cost can be very reasonable for a simple meal. The signature bowls run about 16 dollars. The regular size is actually quite small. Lots of families come here and try to snag big tables, so we didn't have trouble finding a small table for 2. The food was good! We ordered the beef soup (L), creamy tonkotsu (R), and gyoza. Everything was a decent portion, but because udon itself is heavy it was a filling meal. The broth on both was tasty. The food was fairly priced for what you received, but $2-3 for half an egg is crazy. My two areas for improvement: - more menu options.
