My son and I came here for brunch. Glad this place opened at 10:30am, we came around 11am to avoid the crowd. By the time we left, more folks were coming in. Everything was good. We got the bolognese and Nikutama. Both dishes were good. Very favorable. I like the fact that we can go grab our own to go box and bag to take home leftovers. Service was fine. If you leave a review, you can get a free drink or tempura.
Marugame is a great place to have brunch, lunch or dinner. Locally owned chain restaurant in the bay. This one is located in the City Center Bishop Ranch complex. They provide hand crafted udon bowls, tempura and beverages from a theater kitchen thus allowing diners to watch while food is prepared. There is a building right across the street designated for parking as well as underground. We frequent this location because it's conveniently located close to the freeway and has a Tesla charging station just across the complex. They offer a wide variety of Ramen, rice plates, tempura and udon menu. Ordering can be done by the designated window. You can order from the menu and can customize your order based on what's available for add ons. Don't be intimidated by the long lines because it moves fast. Get a table and line up or simply have someone in your party save the table. In the 2 times we've been there, line wasn't long. We have tried the following on the menu: Curry Nikutama Shrimp Tempura Vegetable Tempura Tonkatsu Udon Teriyaki Chicken katsu Premium Tendon It's not gourmet food but definitely worth the price and time. We came in a Sunday on Father's Day as soon as they opened, so there was no line. The open kitchen is awesome. The staff were all very friendly and it was fun to choose a variety of food and they were all very good. The udon noodles were very fresh! I liked how they had signs by the condiment section explaining the different sauces/side dressings. There's lots of seating available for parties of all sizes. Would recommend!
Really enjoyed this udon spot! The self-service setup made everything quick and easy, and the restaurant was super clean and organized. The prices were very fair for the quality and portion sizes. The food itself was delicious -- the broth and noodles were really flavorful and tasted fresh. One of the coolest parts was getting to watch them make the noodles right in front of you. The staff was also very polite and helpful throughout the whole experience. Definitely a place I'd come back to!
This is our second time here for dinner p and having eaten at the ones in Waikiki Hawaii, Los Angeles, and other places, I was hopeful that it would meet the mark. On the positive side: - Some interesting seasonal menu options - Efficient ordering process - Same high quality udon noodles - Good soft boiled egg - Bright, generally clean eating area - Easy self-serve station for sauces and drinks and utensils (although it was pretty messy) On the negative side: - The beef was chewy and only lukewarm - The tempura bits were too big, cold and greasy - The sliced green onions look like they had been sitting out uncovered - The fried items under the heat lamps were not cooked or kept warm properly--the shrimp and croquettes were over fried and the zucchini was limp and soggy So overall, this Marugame Udon missed the mark. With some additional attention though, I believe it can reach the standard I've been fortunate to experience elsewhere
Fresh udon served quickly & self-serve tempura makes for a satisfying and comforting lunch! There was a cafeteria-style line where you order and pick up your udon and serve yourself fresh tempura before sitting down, but it moved quickly just after 12pm on a Tuesday. I opted for the Beef Tomatama (4/5) on the seasonal menu in December, which had a rich tomato curry that paired well with the fresh udon. I also tried the shrimp tempura (4/5) which was good but would have been better if it was freshly fried. There's plenty of seating, though the tables were a little dirty. There is also outdoor seating.
Marugame Udon always hits the spot when I'm craving some noodles and soup! This location is located in a prime spot as well. Plenty of parking and shopping options to do after or even before. There's also lots of seating options inside and outside. If you choose to sit outside, they also have heat lamps so you stay warm during the winter Service is fast as it goes in a line and the additional tempura choices are always delicious! I feel like every time I go, there's always a new item on the menu! This time I tried the cheese katsu curry udon and it was pretty good. A little heavy with the curry, but the flavors all melded together well!
Been a regular for years across various locations like oahu and south bay. Overtime, Marugame has skimped on the soup and meat, which is a bummer. They never pour enough broth to cover the noodles (see niku udon pic). I do appreciate that they have staff helping people find a seat now. Lines may look intimidating but it moves fast. Good for a quick bite but not sure if the portions are worth the price so Ive been coming less
This was recommended by a friend and I am glad we came here. This place is inside a mall on the ground floor. We didn't have any reservations and I don't even know if they take them. It was very busy but we were able to get a table of six of us. You get in line and order your food and pick your add ons in line. Then pay and they give you a number stand to get your food delivered. All the udon is made right in front of you. It is all scratch made in large pots and it is amazing to just watch them make it. I got the most popular, Nikutama which is the beef. Wow the Udon was amazing. The beef cooked perfectly. I loved it. My wife got the creamy broth with pork and it was good but she liked mine better. We got some tempura to eat with the soup but it is made ahead of time and wasn't very crispy. Disappointing. We really enjoyed this place and will come again in in the area.
I'm so glad I returned for a dinner last night with my fiancé and pup. I got the nikutama, which is a delightfully sweet beef with a rich, deep, savory broth (and of course, tempura flakes, scallion and an egg!) On the side, I got the gyoza, tempura cheese and a fried shrimp. Everything was hot, fresh and exactly the way I wanted it. The service was fast, and the cashier was super friendly. On a Wednesday night, it wasn't terribly busy so I was able to find a seat outside pretty easily. Speaking of outside, they have outdoor heaters which made things much more comfortable. Overall, I'm very happy with my recent trip.
We walked past this place 3 times today and so we decided to give it a try. They handmade the noodles in front of us while we were waiting in line to order. We got a Tan Tan and a beef noodle. My mom really enjoyed the Tan Tan. The beef was alright. It was as described, I just didn't love it. My biggest beef was with them seeing that I was holding my crying toddler, as my mom was next to pay. But they would not let me take a seat. They insisted on me waiting in the middle of the restaurant as my toddler was upset, while they cleaned the table, until my mom finished paying. But then someone else went to grab the table. So then they awkwardly had to make the other lady get up for us- thankfully I did not have to ask as I would have probably just left. I donno, I understand having rules, this one just seemed excessive and not efficient. Plus anyone with a toddler knows parents need grace. Not to mention it put a bad taste in my mouth and probably that of the other lady who got booted. To be honest though, the staff was super kind and courteous. It was probably just a company rule that they had to uphold. So not blaming the staff. Would not return as a parent.
I love how fast and simple Marugame is! Came here for a quick solo lunch and got the kake ramen which was about a lunch size portion for a small. But don't underestimate it because it's still really filling. I picked the shrimp tempura and potato croquette which I put directly in my soup because I like when it absorbs the flavor of the soup but there's a container that you can get it on the side. I love the light, yet rich taste of the broth and the dipping sauce and spices you can get on the side to complement it. Overall my dish was under $12 which is a steal these days and I left full and happy! read more
I haven't been here in a few years. Maybe more. But earlier this week we were craving cold udon, having come back from Hawaii, and did a Yelp search. Who knew they had it here . Ordered takeout since we were so tired after tennis. It was nice that they have a seperate door to pick up take out so while I waited on the curbside DD ran into pick up. Easy peasy. When we got home we immediately inhaled it. Loved how they separated the filling from the udon and packed the broth separately. Poached egg was creamy still and blended well with the beef and noodles. We came back again yesterday but wanted to actually dine in. There were no longer long lines from when we last dined in years ago. The line went smoothly and the lady was quick and efficient to take our orders and even gathered Hubs' take out rice bowl for later. The gal at the pick up windown was also proficient as her job and even telling me my clams and ginger udon had just ran out so she gave me a number for my table. The tempura station was always one of my favorites. They just ran out of imitation crab but we snagged the last shrimp tempura. Also got a sweet potato and my favorite, pumpkin . 4/5 crunchy not too oily and naturally sweet. No sauce needed We found a table right away which was wiped clean. DD was half way through her udon when mine barely arrived. After the first sip of broth, it quickly reminded me of why we haven't been back in so long. Warm soup vs piping hot. That's why. Fresh cooked clams and butter ginger melted into the broth was a nice change from the usual. The taste was great and flavorful. Clams were blanched nicely with a few unopened shells that I didn't eat. There was also a few with some sand inside which was expected for a fast foodie style place where clam is ordered. 3.5/5 The other downside from the overall dish for both of us was the over sprinkling of green onions. Honestly, this is still my favorite Marugame Udon stop because it's so spacious and there's always seating available, even on a Sunday lunchtime hour these days. The FengShui is just so much better than other locations since the spot isn't directly facing the sun and you still get a good breeze walking inside. Staffs are decent and helpful as usual. Tempura is always a favorite here. Regular Nikutama Udon bowl with an egg is still affordable and fulfilling. This time, it felt like my regular bowl size had shrunk a bit, but the portions are still very slurpy good. Mushroom tempura and shrimp tempura plus the potato croquette is still legit and delicious. I have no complaints each time we stop by for a quick meal fix. Aisles are clean and organized. It's just not as crowded as it used to be anymore. The menu selections are surviving during high inflation times, especially for regular bowls under $15. I call it decent and affordable udon here. Adding another $1.50-$2.25 for each tempura item isn't too bad either. Very good. I'm still liking it here. Feels great inside and you can still sit comfortably outside. Worth it. read more

Today was proof. It doesn't matter which marugame udon you go to; Valley Fair or San Ramon the food is good. This location seemed bigger than the VF location. There was plenty of space and tables. The staff was friendly and service quick. Missing fifth star is because the tables needed busing and the condiment area had seen better times. read more

We love Marugame!! Guaranteed fast service and great food. I always get the Nikutama and it never disappoints. The broth is great, noodles are great, and I love adding the tempura flakes. The tempura is great too but I always get so full here. It's a great price for how filling it is too! I recommend this to everyone who visits. read more

08/30/25 update: Revisit here! Love Marugame Udon. Fresh made chewy udon with each udon dish. Today, I tried the new Creamy Broth Tonkotsu-style udon. It was delicious! A seasoned egg, juicy pork chasu in a creamy chicken broth. Hold the green onions please. Flavorful and a hunger satisfying udon. The noise level is loud because it's busy. The floors were a bit dirty with napkins, utensils and noodles on the floor. The tables needed wiping as the customers kept coming and going. (minus one star). But the dishes remain fresh and tasty. The tempura side dishes are crunchy and tasty as well. (5/5 stars) Service is limited here. Mostly self service. (4/5 stars). You clean your own plates and return trays and dishes to a designated location. Iced water is also self serve. Prices have gone up, but everything is still reasonably priced for today's market. Quality is Restrooms are available indoors still intact here. read more

We finally got to try out this place! The food is pretty good, not the absolute best, but all of the food is served hot and fresh. You can see it being made and cooked there! There was a long line, but it moved quickly. Ordering is not that straightforward. We got some base udon, then added some toppings and sides. Here's what we got: Large Nikutama udon $15.99 - DH liked this. The broth is sweet and salty, sorta like teriyaki/sukiyaki flavor profile. Soft cooked egg was good. Large Creamy Tantan udon $12.45 - this seasonal item is a little spicy but if you can handle chili crisp, it is totally fine. It is definitely not as spicy as malatong. The broth is very thick and creamy. It only comes with half of a soft cooked egg. This one's good, loved the flavor combos, but you'll need to add more meat to make it filling. Wish I got a fried chicken side. Extra veggies $2.99 - DH and I split this one. It is a small container of basic boiled veggies things like cabbage. It is good filler but seemed very expensive for what it is. 2 Shrimp tempura $2.29 each - kids really like this one and even asked for more. But we were not gonna wait in line again! Extra noodles $2.99 - small container of extra noodles. Good for kids. I wish I took a photo of the sides and tempura. If you just get the large udon, it's not quite enough food for a filling lunch. I dinged them a star because it can get quite expensive if you add some tempura and sides. It is not quite as inexpensive as they advertise. We are light eaters and we could have definitely ordered more. Another soft boiled egg was three dollars and each slice of basic tempura was charged by the piece so it could be two dollars for one piece of tempura veggie! You can see how this could add up! It would be nice to get some combo package add-on for a little bit less per piece like one that includes two or three pieces of veggies and one piece of meat for a lower price. The restaurant itself had indoor and outdoor seating. It's kind of like a food hall atmosphere. You have to get your food before looking for a table. No saving tables, we saw staff regulating that. There is an area that is self serve for utensils, napkins, and to go bowls. Overall, a solid place to eat, but definitely get extra sides and more protein to make it filling. read more

Love The City Center in San Ramon and all its foodie options. Tried Marugame Udon! Yum! Great fast casual place. You order at the counter and they are happy to help newbies. They have pre-set bowls or you can be adventurous by picking your base (noodle, broth or curry, hot or cold) and then adding topping like veggies, crisp tempura, scallions. I got the number 9. This is their concentrated dashi broth topped with 2 shrimp tempura and scallions. I added veggies. Amazing! My friend Jennifer Barnett-Champion got the spicy vegan bowl! I also felt it was very affordable- my bowl with sides, drink, tax, and tip was $18. New fav place! read more

I've been to Marugame in Oahu and Berkeley and now San Ramon! Always soft and fresh udon noodles, crispy tempura, and very filling food that makes you come back for more. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. read more
Stopped by on our way home from SJ. Found this Japanese eatery serving udon and rice bowls and we were comitted. There were plenty of tables available during Sunday past noon, so we took our best pick. We ordered the Nikutama Udon (simmered beef) which reminded me of sukiyaki, Creamy Broth Udon (pork chasu) which is reminiscent of ramen and our teen's Teriyaki Chicken Katsu rice bowl. My wife got a few pieces from the Tempura Bar (asparagus, shrimp & sweet potato) while I got fresh vegetables $2.99 for my bowl. Food was amazingly great for a fast-food setting such as this. This would probably be our new chain restaurant favorite in the Contra Costa County. Counter service with filling and reasonably priced dishes. We'll surely be back for more. read more
This is a fantastic quick udon place right in City Center - Bishop Ranch. The noodles are made right there in the front where you see them stirring it in a huge pot but the ordering and getting the udon is super fast and handled within 5-10 minutes. You can order the main dishes (~$11 for Regular bowl, ~$16 for Large bowl), and then add some add-ons which are placed almost like a cafeteria line (if you've ever eaten at a J&S or others on the east coast). Drinks are a little pricey, a can of soda is $2, but you can get water cups for free. They also have disposable soup spoons which are amazing. Tastes great, and didn't know they had an app until the next day where they emailed me due to paying with Apple Pay and kept my points from the night before! (App is made by Thanx). Awesome! It'll acrue points as long as you use the credit card that is stored in the app. Yummy noodles for when it's cold and it's super quick. Looking forward to eating here again. read more
Marugame udon in San Ramon is a great place to have a quick lunch/dinner. The service is quick. You order at the register and go down the line picking up your udon bowl and adding toppings (green onions, tempura bits, tempura of choice). The tempura pieces are additional cost. I ordered the large kake, which is a basic broth with udon. Green onions and tempura bits were free toppings. Another udon bowl we tried is the BK which is a different base which is a little more saltier and sauce like instead of soup. Both were delicious and comforting. The restaurant is large with plenty of indoor seating. We will come again for another bowl of udon or to try the katsu curry! read more

Tried Marugame Udon and went with the Nikutama, which was a solid choice. The udon noodles were thick, chewy, and clearly freshly made. Great texture and bite. The sweet beef was tender and flavorful, and the hot spring egg added a nice richness when mixed into the broth. The kake-style soup was light but savory, letting the noodles shine without being too heavy. Ordering was straightforward, and it's nice being able to see the food options clearly before deciding. Portions were filling for the price, especially compared to other udon spots. The place can get busy during peak times, but the line moves at a decent pace. Overall, a reliable spot for comforting udon with good quality ingredients. I'd definitely come back to try their curry options or add some tempura next time. read more

This is a big restaurant with a lot of families. It is like an udon factory. As soon as I walk in, I see staff cooking big vats of udon next to the ordering station. The ordering station is very small. Only one man works there. You give your order and he will also make suggestions to help you out. I ordered a BK bowl with half a seasoned egg and one shrimp tempura and he suggested the two shrimp BK udon bowl. After he gave me my bowl of noodles with BK broth and half a cold seasoned egg, I moved on to the next station where I pick my tempura and pay. There was a line of people in front of me waiting to pick up their tempura and to pay. If you want more scallions then you must ask for it in line otherwise you can't get more scallions. There's a water station where you can pick up some ginger and tempura bits. The water station only allows one person to get water at one time so it is cumbersome. My 1.99 half a seasoned egg was ice cold. It's too bad they don't warm it up for you. The shrimp tempura was doughy and cold. The best part about my meal was the udon noodles itself. It was chewy and springy. The BK sauce was not too salty. It was slightly sour (umami flavored). It tasted like dashi mixed with soy sauce. My husband had the curry udon with sweet beef which they weighed before placing it into his bowl. They put a raw egg into his bowl and that egg is not soft boiled but runny. He still enjoyed his curry bowl. Afterwards, you bus your own dishes by putting away your black tray, throwing away your trash and putting the bowls on a shelf where an employee takes to wash. This is not a good date place because it's full of families and children but it is a great place if you want to have a comforting noodle dish. I like that you can customize your food and the cost can be very reasonable for a simple meal. The signature bowls run about 16 dollars. The regular size is actually quite small. We both opted for the large size which is like regular American size. read more
A favorite chain - I'm usually down for the quick and tasty experience that Marugame offers. My journey: Order the Nikutama ramen with the tempura crunchies and green onion at the counter, add some tempura- shrimp, zucchini and pumpkin, get my tempura sauce and water. Savor and enjoy the tender noodz, umami broth, and crispy tempura. Prices are affordable. They even have a spicy vegan tantanmen for the plant based peeps. Service is fast- you're in and out and off to burn the calories to eat again. Ambiance is vibrant, bustling with udon lovers, but somehow you'll always get a table because the turnover is pretty quick! read more
As lovers of all types of noodle soups, I'm surprised we'd never been to Marugame before! We visited on a very busy Saturday evening but the whole visit moved along quickly. I was impressed (and amazed) to see fairly large-scale noodle production live - from the dough rolling to cooking to portioning! The service was nice throughout, everyone was very friendly in helping us order to cleaning tables quickly. The restaurant is rather large with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of families come here and try to snag big tables, so we didn't have trouble finding a small table for 2. The food was good! We ordered the beef soup (L), creamy tonkotsu (R), and gyoza. Everything was a decent portion, but because udon itself is heavy it was a filling meal. The broth on both was tasty. The food was fairly priced for what you received, but $2-3 for half an egg is crazy. My two areas for improvement: - more menu options. Not necessarily more customizable, but just more options for soups - paying before we get the food. The soup prep line moves quickly (since it's just assembling) but then you have to still wait in line to pay while your food gets cold read more
Tried Marugame for takeout today and it was pretty good. I ordered the chicken katsu teriyaki with a side of vegetables. They forgot the vegetables so I had to place another order for the veggies (a tad annoying). The chicken was nice and crispy - even after it was reheated. The teriyaki sauce was 10/10. read more
Second time coming here. The service was great and fairly quick. I shared a bowl of udon with my daughter and she really liked it. The noodles were delicious and so was the soup. The boiled egg was good, but for an extra 1/2 egg, cost $2. There was only one slice of pork in there and it was barely any meat on it. I wish it came with more. There was a water machine with all the utensils like chopsticks, forks and spoons. There's an area where you place your tray and throw out your trash. There's a lot of seating and it was pretty clean. Some cool artwork on the walls. A lot of seating outside as well. We enjoyed our lunch here. read more
Nice spot to get your Udon On! Service is always fast, your order is ready before you can grab some tempura! There is a fair amount of seating inside and some seating outside, if the weather is nice, outside is always the choice. Never had a bad dish here, if you like Udon, this is the place for you! read more

Best Udon place!! The service is great! You walk up and ask for what bowl/plate you want. Then you can also pick up what additional foods you want. This section is fried items which add a good crunch to the dish. I love their Katsu, it is always moist! The udon was so flavorful, loved the thicker noddles. Marugame always hits the spot especially on a chilly day. No long line even though it was lunchtime and a holiday week - thank goodness because I was starving! I think prices have gradually risen year after year which sucks but understandable. Food quality is consistently great. read more
I used to come here a bunch a few years ago and then took a break as I moved. Recently was back and ordered the tan tan (my usual) and was pretty disappointed. The dish was lukewarm and unfortunately quite bland. The broth really lacked flavor and the toppings didn't add much. I'm not sure if they changed the recipe or I came on a bad day, but I used to always get the tan tan and it's definitely different now :/ read more

Yes, they have a vegan udon, but I don't think any of the tempura sides are vegan, I think the batter that is used is made with egg.
