    OMG ramen
    Ethan P.

My partner and I ate here last night, and I think it may be the best ramen I've ever had. I ordered the "OMG" ramen, which came with two ribs in it, and it was absolutely fantastic. I literally couldn't stop eating it. The workers were very polite and the restaurant looked very nice on the inside as well. I will be coming back again soon!

    tsukemen

this was okay-ish (veering on bad tbh)... the broth was thin and not seasoned well enough to feel like a tsukemen broth which is supposed to be viscous and flavorful to stick onto the noodles as you dip into the broth. tasted like regular tonkotsu broth and noodles literally just separated from each other except the broth wasn't hot nor cold, it felt warm almost room temp (maybe it was sitting for a while since i can see the seaweed in the bowl also looks soggy) usually tsukemen is either hot or cold so this was just not very thoughtful execution. the egg was bad. couldn't finish it because it tasted like sake. clearly they didn't fully cook down the braising liquid for the soft boiled eggs because the alcohol didn't completely evaporate... some of the bamboo shoots were tough and fibrous so i couldn't chew all the way. the chashu was good tho! it was soft and torched and overall good mouthfeel. the ambiance was nice too. overall i wish the broth was hotter and thicker, noodles wider, soft boiled eggs edible, bamboo shoots softer... okay this was actually quite bad ramen but it's very close to my apartment so it made for a quick lunch on a work day. unfortunately i was craving tsukemen from taishoken in sf and this doesn't even come close i gave 3 stars because it's minnesota... as a southern california native who eats a lot of japanese food, my expectations for good ramen here are low. maybe the other things on the menu are good tho! and i don't want them to close because so many good asian places have closed around northloop so i'll take what i can get

I just got the Classic Tonkotsu Ramen this time and I can say it's the best ramen I've hard in the Twin Cities so far. Delicious, deep, flavorful broth. Great noodles and pork. I would have preferred no sesame seeds but there's nothing to critique on this ramen. Quick service, not crowded. I tried the ice cream machine for a cup on the way out. Not that great, and a little more eggy/custardy, but what can you expect from a vending machine. The mix-ins were fun. Will definitely be coming back.

They have no sea-food option either, and they only have one chicken ramen. Chicken wasn't properly grilled and it felt like I am eating raw chicken. The ramen noodles were also interesting in that they don't look like any of ramen noodles I had before. Broth is just pure MSG so I didn't even bother finishing the broth. Udon strips-fried was surprisingly very good. It was a bit oily but chicken in there was tasty. Good amount of bean sprouts and cabbages. They seem to have multiple options for udon stir-fried, so if you want a traditional ramen or even udon with broth, this is not the place for you.

The menu is limited. We got the Mapo tofu mazemen, which is this brothless ramen with a Mapo tofu blend, mushrooms, eggplant, tofu, and doubanjian blended together. I wish we could see some of the distinct ingredients alone besides the tofu as it was a bit too blended for me. I liked how unique this ramen was!! The chicken karaage basket had the most addicting trio of sauces - yuzu mayo, nori ranch; and honey mustard. The yuzu mayo was so light and citrusy, and I could practically drink the nori ranch. The fries were shoestring and perfectly crispy. The issue lies in the chicken karaage - it almost felt burnt, and it was quite dry inside. The chicken age gyoza were yummy. I did love the crispness and the tangy kamikaze dipping sauce! Service is efficient!

My group made sure to have a reservation anticipating that there would be lots of people and thank goodness we did. Those that went as walk ins had a wait time of 90+ minutes. When we arrived, we were promptly seated and ordered food right away as we knew what we wanted. We got an order of NHK (spicy chicken karage) and it was the perfect appetizer to gear us up for our entree. The Tonkotsu Ramen was so rich and fulfilling, the broth had an incredible umami flavor to it and the noodles had the perfect texture to it. The staff were all so friendly and attentive to what our needs were. I want to congratulate the staff at Zen Box Izakaya for an incredible 20 year run, we'll miss them greatly

As far as I remember, Eagan location has more booths, which gives more traditional Japanese vibes. My chicken ramen was solid. Chicken was nicely grilled but the broth tased just like MSG. The noodles doesn't look premium (feels like packaged ramen) but overall I liked it. The pork meal was okay! The rice was oily and not much taste to it. It's also hard to eat out of the bowl without a spoon, which they don't provide. Japanese fries are a must-try; it's large not too salty and the sauces are just phenomenal. Service was good but a little slow. It was dinner time on Friday, so they were probably very busy. We pressed the button two times but they didn't come. They automatically charged 18% gratuity fees so you don't have to tip them if you don't want to. Boba bar is right at the entrance!! The brown sugar was phenomenal. I got it with milk instead of milk tea, which makes the texture less creamy but I really liked it. Dragon tea just wasn't it and it tastes nothing like dragon fruit.

If you're here for a date, I'd recommend coming a bit earlier so you can get one of the booths that they have with the curtains.
