Tonkotsu Pork and K Town Ramen
Christy S.

Noodles weren't great quality and broth was good but I don't think it was worth the price when Sawtelle is 12 minutes away. I did like the concept of the ktown ramen and the service was friendly but unfortunately that is all the good things I can say. I noticed the place had a lot of flies around the tray return area but maybe it's because things got too piled up. I also experienced a stomach ache afterward but that could be attributed to something else too!

Tonkotsu Ramen

The perfect ramen spot for rainy weather! Had lunch here with a colleague during the lunch rush and we're lucky enough to grab a table inside. I had the Tonkotsu with chasiu pork belly and it was so good. The chasiu was perfectly seared but still soft and the ramen noodles were cooked to perfection. The broth was not too heavy and had so much flavor. Overall a great meal. Quick tip: try to come after 12:30 pm when it's not too crowded else you'll be waiting in a long line. But they make the orders pretty quick so it's not a long wait for food.

Poke bowl

I got a poke bowl and the wait for this was so long. It took 30 minutes and for 14$ the portion size was extremely small and does not even compare to other places I've been too. There isn't much customization options but their vegetables tasted fresh and were flavorful.

This place is alright-- nothing too special, but it gets the job done. Went here post-gym and ordered a ramen bowl. You need to go pick it up from the counter once it's ready. Employee was nice, had a good experience. Though, there were some interesting characters sitting and yelling in the back of the store, but I suppose that isn't too necessarily the establishment's fault. In terms of the food, it was okay. I did feel that the broth felt somewhat lackluster in terms of flavor as I was nearing the end, and the noodles were not the softest. But, for a simple place in the USC Village that is convenient to hit up after the gym, it works. Not too sure that I would come back here (especially since it is in close proximity to Dulce), but until next time!

Shoyu Ramen

It was a nice try!!! I really wish I liked this place more because the location is so good, but I would say that they need to work on the authenticity. The shoyu ramen was not bad, the noodles were cooked well and the meat was tasty. But with such a small portion and mediocre soup base, $16 is not really worth it for me. I also tried the spicy miso ramen and boy that needs work...the flavor and sauce were just done really really wrong haha because the soup tasted like water! Overall, there's room for improvement and I see lots of potential in this place!

Spicy tuna supamu

Located in USC village, I was looking for a quick snack during a swim meet break. Found this ramen place that had spam musubi sandwiches. Ordered two because wasn't sure how big they would be. Hard to tell in picture but it's about 3x5 and thick. It's a small eatery with some indoor outdoor seating. Made to order so there was a short 5-10 min wait for the food. I thought it was delicious. Rice is seasoned, spam was fried, and egg was seasoned like tamago. I would definitely try other ones next time I'm in the area.

Got to trial the viral musubi sandwich "supamu" and it was hella good! Had the "big spam" which has two layers of spam, egg and a slightly sweet teriyaki sauce. If you like musubi you'll like this, they have a variety of types and it's basically tricked out musubi.

Tonkotsu ramen (with pork broth)

I popped into this little ramen spot after finishing some meetings at USC. It's super conveniently located in USC Village, right next to campus. The ramen was pretty good, but felt a bit pricey for such a laid-back, no-frills place. You order at the counter, wait for your food, then grab a table or sit at the counter -- it's a self-serve setup. It just happened to be one of those rare chilly days in SoCal, so the ramen totally hit the spot. If you're into ramen, you'd probably agree with me: I'd rate it between 3.5 and 4, out of 5.

Tonkotsu Pork Calpico

I rarely post reviews but I am low-key pissed off. Their food is great and decently priced. However, they are NEVER open. Their google hours are wrong because they change it every day. I went in at 3p.m. today (regular school day so hours SHOULD stay the same) and they said they are closed until 4p.m. Ok fine. I go again now at 4:15 and they say 5!!! Lol this is just not good for my hanger.

Phattharaporn S.

I think this place is quite overrated because it was the only ramen in the village. It tasted just ok and was enough to get me full but won't come back for good food. I ordered a soy sauce soup. The pork was grilled to burn. They didn't give generous quantity too. I've found much better ramen in LA.

We ended up being sat next to the grill, I have a shellfish allergy so we asked to sit in their outdoor seating area (which had plenty of tables open) instead just so my allergies don't get triggered by all the vapors. As we walked to our outdoor table, my husband and friend heard three workers talking crap about me and complaining that I shouldn't even be eating there because everything had shellfish. Let's be honest it's not that hard to accommodate, plus we're giving you our business so what's the problem? Rude all the way through table service, then when we were all finished, we had barely just paid and we were finishing our drinks when the same three workers rushed into our table to clear everything out and pushed us out of our table. We're all a pretty chill group of people but every single one of us left saying what the actual f*ck was their problem?

The place was packed and had a lively atmosphere. There was a lot of energy, but it was still comfortable enough to have a conversation and enjoy the meal. I ordered the ramen along with the fried rice, and both were excellent. The ramen was rich, flavorful, and easily one of the best bowls I've had in the LA area. The fried rice was also a standout and paired perfectly with the meal. Service was great from start to finish. The staff was attentive, friendly, and kept everything moving despite how busy it was. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. If you're in LA and in the mood for ramen, this is a spot you should absolutely check out.

I remember going here during their grand opening ages ago, did their, back then, super cheap deal with unlimited noodle refill (even further discounted due to the special event day) and eating to the point of barely being able to sit up in the car without throwing up. I have a picture of my brother eating here in middle school with us and then later on in his early 20's. Crazy time lapse, and truly shows what a favorite this place is and it's place in the community. As with all businesses in Little Tokyo, parking can suck (not as bad as K-town, but you're either paying or super circling around). Service is super efficient, welcoming and polite, as with their other locations as well. It's not the biggest restaurant, but none of the Shinsengumis I've been to have been particularly large. With this location, from my first visit, and all the subsequent visits, I always get their Hakata ramen, firmer noodles, since the longer I eat and enjoy the food, they'll soften a bit, less soup oil and less saltiness. I get all of the toppings that it comes with and I always add in a poached egg. Love the strong pork flavor since they stew their broth for so long and the tenderness of the chashu (sometimes I order more). Prices have definitely gone up and a slightly altered upgraded version of this ramen is almost $30 if you're not careful enough. Times have changed but how good this place hasn't. There's more ramen options now than there were like 10 years ago, but Shinsengumi is always a classic.

We ordered a chicken karaage to start and it wasn't bad, nothing to write home about though. Since the pieces were large, it was slightly awkward to eat without any plates, and I was just catching the crumbs with my hand (didn't have the ramens at the time). Also got a yuzu beer to try and it was delicious, nice yuzu flavor with some tanginess. I had the shoyu with duck while my husband had the yama tonkotsu that came with fragrant black garlic oil. The tonkotsu is not one of those rich, milky, creamy ones and I personally like these lighter ones more. I also enjoyed the shoyu which had a pleasant depth of flavor, but it felt like it was relying too heavily on MSG for umami. Noodles came out chewy. Definitely not the best ramens I've had but are some of the better ones in LA. Our server was friendly, as were the rest of the staff. Service was quick. The restaurant decor feels straight out of Japan, an extra bit of fun. There's a $10 paid lot behind this block of buildings that's convenient for anything in this part of Little Tokyo.

There was not anyone at the restaurant at the time, but people did start trickling in as more time elapsed. We got our food relatively quickly as well. FOOD: I ordered the spicy pork tsukemen ($23.45), which is their dipping noodle. The noodles are thicker than standard ramen, but in a good way! It comes with thick chashu (thick, fatty pork) slices and soft boiled eggs. If you haven't had tsukemen before, you essentially dip your noodles into the broth and then eat it that way. The broth is extremely flavorful and there are also pieces of chashu in it as well. The only critique that I have regarding this is the broth was lukewarm which made the dish taste slightly off. I've tried this dish at another branch and the broth was also lukewarm there, so I'm not sure if this is a location issue or a standard amongst all branches. Also, this dish does not really have any vegetables in this, but I also don't know if traditional tsukemen has veggies included. SERVICE: Service was quick and everyone was nice and doing their job. Didn't seem like the staff was slacking or messing around while there weren't many customers. They were very attentive to us, refilling our water immediately once they saw it was getting low, and being very attentive towards if we had any other concerns or if we needed anything else. PARKING: There technically is street parking but since it's in Little Tokyo, it's going to be very difficult to find it. There's $4-6 valet parking available nearby the location. There are a lot of people walking around though so just be safe. INTERIOR: It's not too big of a place but it's also not too small as well. It looks very well kept and clean. BATHROOM: Two gender neutral bathroom stalls that are both very clean and accessible. No issues here with them. TLDR: Overall, I thought the place was pretty good to eat at! I would definitely come back for the tsukemen (as long as the broth is warmed up until it's hot). A very good dish combined with great music (they have some great Japanese music variety) is definitely a spot worth coming to with friends !! :))
