The service was cold molasses in the dead of winter S-L-O-W. This place is amazing. It was my first time eating real ramen and this place did not disappoint. From the 90s rap music to the delicious drinks everything was a hit. Such sweet service and amazing music give this restaurant an atmosphere that beckons guests to return. The tofu buns are out of this world, and others raved over the pork buns! The vegetarian ramen has a slight "bite" to it (careful not to accidentally get it on sensitive areas like eyes), but it's phenomenal!! Finally made it back here so time to update my review! This visit I got one of the pork bao buns and it was the perfect small app! Really delicious flavor and just the right size to not fill you up before your meal. I got the Tantan-San ramen and am still thinking about it!! Probably my favorite ramen I've ever had. Good food and good vibes! Spring went back into hiding so I wanted something warm for dinner and ramen was perfect. I grabbed dinner with a few colleagues so we grabbed a nice variety of apps drinks. The karrage chicken nuggets with the lime kosho aioli was easily the favorite. They the right size, with great flavor and a good crisp. The chicken and vegetable gyoza were also great. We also enjoyed the pork belly and fried chicken buns. The crab rangoon had a nice little kick but they were just okay to me. I had the limited edition spicy lemongrass tom kha. It was pretty good packed some great flavor. The spicy didn't really kick until later. The fried tofu had a nice balance which tends to be a hit or mess. I would definitely recommend this dish and add a molten egg and some chili sauce if you want to really spice it up. For drinks I had the ume' old fashioned and the Japanese juzu highball. I think the highball is a nice choice for warmer weather. It's a bit light and refreshing and you don't really taste the whisky. The old fashioned was just okay to me. The service was great. We got seated at one of the high tops quickly, they do have booths but they're all reserved for the night. We didn't know they have happy hour! Anyway, for anyone who's interested, they have happy hour Monday- Friday, 3-6pm. We got 2 cold draft asahi beer to start, and ordered the avocado tuna tartare for appetizer. I ordered the 10 hours tonkotsu ramen + buttered corn, and he got the kimchi fried chicken ramen + egg. Overall the ramen flavor was pretty good, not salty which is a plus! Came here with my girlfriend for an early dinner on a cool day. The place wasn't too busy when we arrived but started getting busy quickly after we started our meal. It's a small but lively restaurant with a hidden kitchen. We started off with a couple of bao buns and the tofu one was amazing, by far the best one. My favorite ramen spot (any guesses?) in the city was closed today and I was really craving some ramen on a cold Tuesday night so I decided to walk over, given how close I live to this location. Since the weathers been getting cold, have been hunting for more ramen places to try. This was on my list and finally had a chance to come in. We were seated pretty quickly and server was helpful. It wasnt too packed that day either and we were able to get a nice relaxing spot by the window. I was fairly hungry so decided to try the Sumo since i saw it had chashu and wontons. It came out fairly quickly and looked pretty good. The broth had good flavor and the wontons were good. There really wasnt much meat imo, and it just seemed to be chopped up chashu, especially for a ramen dish called sumo. Overall i thought the ramen was good. We started off with cocktails and I ordered the lychee tini per the waiter's recommendation since I wanted something strong. The lychee tini was pretty strong but smooth, not too sweet. I also ordered the kimchi fried chicken ramen, which was decent and tasted like your standard ramen broth. I feel like the broth could've been more flavorful, but it was ok. I did not even realize that Ramen San had locations other than the one in River North so I was super excited to eat at the West Loop location when I walked past it!! I went on a Sunday afternoon and there was more than enough seating inside (definitely a lot less traffic than the River North location even on the weekends which is great!!). Nonetheless, I went with the basil hayden and it was the greatest choice EVER! It was light, crisp, and SOOO smooth! Food wise - we got the chicken and veggie dumplings, the kimchi and fried chicken ramen, and the chicken shio ramen. Everything was spectacular. The dumplings were super hot and crispy and made to PERFECTION! The kimchi/fried chicken ramen definitely is the more spicier one but so so flavorful! Went here on a snow day for much needed warmth and ramen. Got the OG tonkotsu - the most classic ramen option. Not the best tonkotsu I've had, but it was alright. Came with three big chunks of chashu pork. Not the softest chashu I've had. It was a bit too tough and lean for my liking. They could do so much better with this. Almost too meaty if that makes sense. The ramen also came with seaweed, bamboo shoots, and an onsen egg - pretty standard stuff. They added a lot of toasted garlic on top. Not much broth with their ramen, and it was a tad bit salty but otherwise alright. Pretty small compared to other places and with around $20+ with tip and tax, kinda expected more. Spot looks cool with the lighting and the whisky bar. For ramen though? Maybe try elsewhere. Service was not the best either. Sat down and no one came over to take my order. Had to call someone and even then, it was pretty blah. More of a 3.5ish but not inclined to round up and give it a 4.0. Mediocre and underwhelming. I have been to the original "Ramen San" location in Huron in River North a long while ago. I knew it was time for a re-visit. Upon researching their menu online, I noticed that "Ramen San-Whiskey bar" in Fulton Maket also offered express lunch deal ($15.95, subject to change through inflation) daily. As long as we took advantage before 3pm, we would be able to get a bowl of ramen, rice dish, salad, and marinated cucumbers. I thought it was fair. We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess didn't have us wait for too long for a table of 2. The restaurant was quite busy for an early Sunday afternoon. We saw many families were dining in and enjoying their holiday weekend. Speaking of families, I saw a few older children, not toddlers or anyone younger than pre-schoolers. The aisles where servers walked by were narrow. In addition, I didn't see high chairs being offered at the venue. I think most parents would take their toddlers elsewhere to dine, yet just let you know this might not be ideal for them to hang around. The food was what to be expected. Everything was presented on a tray and the visual of each dish was nicely garnished. Unfortunately, I believe the weakest link was the shio ramen. The flavor could be more penetrated, for the broth was thin and a little too bland. Nevertheless, every ingredient appeared fresh and the portion was adequate. Since it's so-called "whiskey bar," it was probably unspoken to say trying a drink or two should be encouraged. I didn't opt for an alcoholic beverage, yet we shared a yuzu lemonade. It was very refreshing and a great starter if you had a lack of appetite. "Ramen San-Whiskey bar" could be a safe choice for those who wanted to have a nice lunch or dinner without spending too much.
