I came to see Dr. Ramirez for back issues while on vacation in Walnut Creek. I would wake up every couple hours after going to bed because of pain in my lower back and hip, and it seemed that there was no comfortable sleeping surface for me. I highly, highly recommend Dr. Barbar Lerner-Ramirez. She offers much more than a typical chiropractor, using a number of gentle, unusual holistic treatments. Her chiropractor care is through DNFT, a gentle and very specific technique using mostly thumb presses. After years of twisting and shoving techniques, I couldn't believe that her nudges were moving my bones back into alignment, but the day after every adjustment, I felt so much better. She also helped me with emotional issues using NET, and she used kinesiology/muscle testing to determine that a rash I had was due to an allergy I didn't even know I had! She used NAET to clear that. (See links below for more info.) Dr. Lerner-Ramirez looks at the whole person and listens to what is going on in your life. She helped me see how much that emotional factors affect the physical body and sometimes she took care of a physical pain using emotional release! However, she is very responsive to what works best for you and can do only the physical chiropractic care if you want. She also loves kids and makes it easy for parents to get a treatment with the little ones tagging along - they can be with you in the treatment room or play with her toys in the waiting room. I had to stop seeing her 15 years ago due to insurance difficulties, but I may start saving up my money and go back to see her. This world would be a much better place if every person in it had the opportunity to see someone like Dr. Lerner Ramirez! Her approach is TRULY holistic, addressing every major aspect of healing and wellness (structural, chemical, nutritional, emotional) -- I have seen probably 50 practitioners in the past 15 years, ever since an ankle injury and subsequent car accident left me with chronic pain. The biggest part of BLR's approach that was missing in many of the other practitioners I saw was the emotional aspect. I had figured out on my own that emotional stress was a contributor to my lasting pain, and I used to (simultaneously) see a chiropractor, a therapist, and a nutritional (naturopathic) doctor ... Now BLR has replaced those three! AND I am getting faster and better results. Less pain, improved digestion, better sleep, better relationships, etc. I have even taken my infant son to BLR, and she has helped immensely with his teething pain as well as some sleeping issues. He only needed three sessions (I, on the other hand, have been going weekly for months). I believe any person would benefit from seeing BLR ... HOWEVER, I do have a couple caveats: 1. I don't think you are a good fit if you are not open-minded about health and tend to prefer pharmaceutical drugs as solutions to your health issues. I still think you would get a benefit, but I'm not sure you would choose to return after going the first time. There is definitely some stuff that happens during sessions that you just need to trust and roll with -- the results will speak for themselves -- but if you have preconceived notions of what you think "real doctors" do and are not open to other methods, you may well be disappointed. 2. It's not cheap, and I have not yet determined whether my health insurance plan will cover any part of it. This is the biggest obstacle for my family. We still choose to prioritize BLR because health is so important, but it's not easy. Overall, I can say BLR is the practitioner that I would most highly recommend out of the MANY, many practitioners I have seen (and many of the others are wonderful as well). I am not a yelper by habit or general practice. I suppose I figure that most of what could be said about a place, already has been. In the journey of physical care, however, individual stories seem to add more value for me. So I am "yelping" with the aim that my story may add value for you. I am 6'5", athletic with 47 years on this frame. I have competitively played basketball, triathlons and recreationally seek sports during free time. Along the way, my body has taken a pretty good wearing. I have been to over eight chiropractors at best count (30 year timeframe, lost track a bit). They have all sufficiently kept me from feeling more pain and in some cases, eliminated pain that I experience in my back from sitting too long, perhaps pulling something while exercising or general maintenance. But they have all been good at what they did for me. Last Sunday, I pulled my back while doing a kettlebell workout and was flat on my stomach in agonizing pain for one hour before I was able to worm my way to a heating pad. I eventually had help arrive who scheduled an appointment with my chiropractor. While waiting for my appointment the next morning, I thought this was the dark abyss all injuries that would compromise the way I like to live. I went to that chiropractor (the regular maintenance chiropractor) who told me I had some swelling and that I should listen to my body. In the world of homeopathy and intuitive healing, I thought this was as good as it would get. There was no mention of a return visit or proscribed plan. In as much pain leaving as when I arrived, I determined I needed to find another doctor. My better half is exceptional at swift research so she took no time in locating Dr. Lerner-Ramirez. Within one week, I am back to 95% of the day I injured myself. She is Exceptional! And she practices a chiropractic discipline I have not experienced in all the years I have been seeking chiropractic treatments. It is a non-force approach that is precise, scientific, calculated and deliberate in its modality. Each visit, (four in all) over the course of the week, I felt better and better with more mobility and less pain. I have been to many types of holistic practitioners for various health issues, but I must say that I have never felt such powerful results as Barbara's N.E.T. work (neuro-emotional technique). This technique has the power to clear emotions we may have carried our whole lives! Transformational! Her chiropractic treatments are also phenomenal. I have had migraine headaches for a long time which are related to my neck. Two different physical therapists told me to never to look down for a long time (such as for sewing, reading, cooking, and drawing) and not to look up either. Those are pretty severe restrictions! I have NOTHING negative to say about Dr. Lerner. After my 6 months of sessions with her, I feel like she is a true friend and was PIVITOL in my health testimony. Let me tell you my story. I am 24 years old and I have had horrible fatigue and neck problems for close to 5 years now. It seemed like things just kept getting worse. Before I went to Dr. Lerner (I heard about her from my Aunt who goes to her occasionally for emotion-related allergies) my neck was going out almost every 3 weeks. I wouldn't e able to get up from bed for DAYS. That meant I couldn't work or really LIVE at all. I thought I was supposed to be in the prime of my life at 24 and I felt like I was 80. This was affecting my psyche big time, making me feel very depressed. I had tried many naturopathic treatments, exercise, nutrition.. I was trying everything. The last thing I wanted to do was get on anti-depressants because I had done enough research to know that that would never get to the root of the problem. I knew it was deeper... in me. After my first treatment, I felt like my mental state was stronger. I reasoned with myself better. After one more, I noticed I didn't feel much pain in my neck at all. Most of my issues were emotion-related (meaning there is an emotion from past experiences blocking my body from healing on it's own). I went to her for 6 months, going twice a week. I was absolutely terrified of having to "chance" paying that much money just to feel NORMAL.. and I knew there was a possibility of it not working, just as everything else had failed. My family pitched in because of the suffering I had been experiencing. If money is a concern to anyone reading this, KNOW, that if you choose this route and open yourself up to new ways of thinking in her sessions... You and her WILL get to the root of the issue and you WILL find true healing. During my 6 month treatment, my neck did not go out ONE TIME! My mental balance was stronger, and I got to know myself and my inner patterns very well. These are tools I can constantly rely on in my life. The other part to this is that with everything you need maintenance. You need maintenance because in this life, emotions are going to keep causing our body issues in different ways (pain, allergies, headaches, etc.) and we have to keep clearing them out. The good thing is that putting your body in a crash course with Dr. Lerner will essentially "re-set" your body to give it a fighting chance to do what it was made to do- heal itself. But you have to equip it with the tools it needs. You will find them again in yourself through these sessions, if you are willing to go to those places. I have learned so much about human bodies and minds, myself, and gained a much clearer perspective on life. It also strengthened my relationship with God. After suffering 6 days from vertigo and being bedridden, I went to Dr. Ramirez. I had initially seen my family practitioner who recommended I take decongestants for a possible inner ear problem. A friend of mine has been treated by Dr. Ramirez for long term back problems with great success. I was a little unsure about the process Dr. Ramirez uses as I wasn't familiar with NET (Neuro Emotional Technique) which is a mind-body approach to help stress related conditions.
