As much as I dislike Old Town, I think I might like this second location of Ramona's Mexican Cafe _more_ than the original up at the Journal Center. Gosh, the staff is all just as nice and you get to sit down to order. The location (the old Monica's El Portal restaurant) is lovely and has that authentic feel - plus a wonderful parking lot (parking in the area is usually a giant hassle). The food was exactly like that at the original location, which is to say a delicious melding of New Mexican and Chihuahense styles, served fast and hot - for reasonable prices. With continual smiles (and refills) by the hustling servers. I'm telling you, I might drive down here again soon with my wife just to go to this outlet of Ramona's. Mmm! One more thing: can I give you a tip on how to avoid doing a left-hand turn to the north across all the crazy Rio Grande traffic at this location? Go west on Dora (the street the restaurant is on) down to the end at Panmunjon (that's how they spell it) road, turn right and go up one street to Mountain. Turn right on Mountain which will take you to a light on Rio Grande that has a left-hand turn arrow. Go slow (it's all residential and there are speed humps); it'll take a couple minutes, but it's better than getting creamed by a speeder (like the motorcyclist I saw lose a boot when he got clipped as I was parking). read more

When in Albuquerque, one gets a breakfast burrito covered in green chiles. That is just the rule. You do it one morning. I selecte Ramona's to be my first spot, and it was a great decision. Came to find out, this is a second location of a locally loved spot, this one was near Old Town which I was going to spend time in for the day, so that's why I chose it. This location opened recently, and feels like walking into a family home for breakfast. It's a good size, with potential for a lot of outdoor seating as well. I received excellent service, not over-bearing, perfectly attentive and kind. Helped me make my big breakfast burrito decision. I got it with chorizo... and man oh man, this thing was a monster. I could not finish it, especially given that there were more fries on the side with more cheese and chiles on them! I would have preferred rice or beans, since there was already plenty of potato inside the burrito. It was too much delicious food... never a bad thing. I guess as an outsider, while I love the chiles, the inclusion of just standard grated mixed cheese all over everything was a bit much for me. Where I come from queso is like a white cheese sauce, but that is why you travel and try! I admit, I would have liked the cheese just on the burrito instead of spilling onto my fries, it made them a bit soggy. The burrito was enough alone and definitely the star. While I am sure if I visit again, I'll visit new places, I would not hesitate to be a repeat visitor here if I were a local! read more

Ramona's is highly efficient and tasty for a local diner. Also, very happy that they took over this space and are doing something positive. My one issue is noise. The floors are all hard surfaces with wooden table legs constantly scraping and creating noise, there is no cloth or fabric on any of the walls meaning that all of the loud sounds, eg children crying etc, echo throughout the entire restaurant at a very loud volume. It can be difficult to hear people speaking from even a foot or two away. This is an easy fix, put more fabric on the walls and ceilings and look up rubber chair-leg covers on Amazon. read more

Absolutely delicious! I had the Enchiladas Montadas Xmas with over medium eggs, rice and beans cooked to perfection this is exactly how I love my enchiladas and not many places make them this way. Only complaint I have is the bathroom does not accommodate for a wheelchair. But If you can walk a bit and leave chair (folded) outside of door you would be fine. I visited this restaurant today on February 6, 2025. This is the first time I have been here since the ownership changed. There is a good signage, ample parking. Very friendly staff. Casual and comfortable decor. The menu has many traditional Mexican food choices, and they have daily specials worth knowing about. I went with the combination plate for lunch. It included a beef taco, a tamale, and an enchilada with a side of rice and beans. I would describe this is truly genuinely authentic Mexican food. I really like this type of taco, where it's just the beef and not a lot of other things crammed into a flimsy shell. The enchilada was tasty and seemed to melt in my mouth. The tamale was delicate corn flour shell filled with traditional pork (I think) . The green sauce was mild and very tasty. I thought that the Mexican rice was particularly good. It had the right subtle flavors and a great texture. The prices are excellent. In case you're from out of town, this is conveniently close to old town where you likely will be visiting so put it on your calendar. read more

Ramona's is a small place off of Jefferson and it is worth the effort! You order at the counter and they deliver to your table when it is ready. The staff are friendly and helpful. I go in thinking I will try other choices, but their Birria tacos draw me back every time, so yummy that I always finish the consommé once my tacos are done! If you go at lunch be ready to for it to be busy, but a lot of people are taking their meals to go since there are so many businesses around it, just be patient and enjoy the food! read more

Everything on the menu looks delicious! We chose to eat the asada torta, huevos rancheros, and of course we had to try a pancake. You are offered chips and salsa, which comes with a red and green salsa. The are both very good and the green has more of a bite than the red. The asada in the torta was chopped to perfection and very tender. The bolillo roll was toasted and soft at the same time. The right amount of filling, but still needed to use fork and knife. The huevos had extra crispy hashbrowns, 2 eggs over easy tasty red chile and added onions. All I can say is wow! The pancake had a great flavor and was fluffy! First time coming and definitely won't be our last! ALL the wait staff and management were so nice and enjoyable! Looking forward to our next visit. read more

Amazing lunch! We stopped in on our last day in ABQ, which happened to be Easter Sunday. We were there after the big crowd. Despite the fact that they had clearly been super busy, the service and food were excellent! I regret not catching the name of our server, as she was so helpful. I went with her recommendation for the huevos rancheros, and I'm so glad I did! Eggs were perfect, chorizo was awesome, and the chile (red AND green) fantastic. If you are looking for excellent Mexican food, and some of the friendliest, genuine staff I've experienced, Ramona's is the place. read more

Ramona's Mexican Cafe #2 We went there on a Friday for a late lunch around 2 pm. We sat on the outdoor patio in the front of the building by the parking lot. The patio is covered and decorated to reduce people from seeing in from outside. They had tables for 2 and up to 6. No waiting for anything throughout our visit. The waitresses were fantastic throughout our visit. Couldn't ask for nicer and more attentive staff. I believe the owner also came around to see how we were doing. The food? Absolutely phenomenal!!!! All food was very hot and the plates were hot as well. The red and green salsa was fantastic! As were the chips. All of which is made onsite. Everything was very fresh. Our waitress checked on us 3 times!! I can't tell you when a waitress checked on me more than once. It was very refreshing to have a friendly and great waitress. Since we are traveling, we won't be able to go back, but if I lived here, I would be their "Norm" from Cheers and there every day. read more

This place is a delight! The servers are very attentive, the food is great. You are served a basket of chips and salsas (awesome flavors!) upon arrival and the decor is very charming. The floor is tiled and the room can have weird acoustics, so it doesn't make for a cozy date spot, but is a great place to bring the family. Absolutely loved it here! We visited new mexico for just one day on easter and had lunch here and the food was so amazing! I loved the salsas served with the chips as an appetizer and the service was so lovely! Will def make this a go to spot whenever we are in the area! read more

We had a good sized group for our visit so we got to try a few things on the menu. We got the combo plate with a tamale and carnitas taco, beef enchiladas Christmas-style, Frito pie, nachos. All of it was delicious, freshly made New Mexican food. The service was outstanding. We were greeted with a smile and seated quickly. All of our questions were courteously answered and when our food came out, we were checked on regularly, but not so frequently that we couldn't enjoy our food. There is an art to good service and they do it well here. You can also walk here from Old Town, I was surprised to find a gem like this so close to a recognized tourist spot. I have been going to Ramona's Mexican Cafe since they first opened the "Old Town" location on Rio Grande NW. (the old Monica's). Joel really knows how to run a business :-) I am a Realtor and I take my clients there often and my Brother and I have Huevos Rancheros there almost every Saturday morning. The atmosphere is friendly and the place is spotless!!! The Tostada Plate is not on the menu but Joel always makes it for me. Walking in, you know you are in a traditional Mexican restaurant. Staff were warm and welcoming and very friendly. The area is bright and cheerful. The menu had many choices. Because we went around 10:30 AM I was able to pick out a lunch item and my husband picked out a breakfast item. Places were really good. He had a traditional breakfast that thoroughly enjoyed. Hit up the new Ramona's Mexican Cafe on Rio Grande this morning for breakfast. It has been FOREVER since receiving service like that! Daniella was phenomenal! They were very busy, but I was seated right away while still waiting for my friend. My beverage order was taken immediately and delivered along with Salsa & Chips. From that point forward, my coffee cup was never empty nor was my water glass! Now for the food, Holy Moly!!! Ordered the cheese enchiladas with an egg on top, red and green with papa's. Chile was HOT and Tasty! (BTW, so was the salsa!) No sopapillas, but that's OK. The chile is not made with any flour so my gluten free friend was also able to enjoy her meal with no issues! 10/10 Super Happy & Satisfied. Highly Recommend this place!!! read more
