We each had soup and a baked potato. Chicken Noodle with homemade noodles was very tasty. Elk Chili needed lots more seasoning. The potatoes and toppings were great! Haven't been to the Ranch Hand in a couple of years, but it used to be our go to place for breakfast. This last time was a sore disappointment. The restaurant smells like a literal sewer. The food, when it finally got to our table, was cold and tasted like it was cooked in rancid oil. The only gal waitressing was getting her tail run off, but she was definitely giving it her all. We were looking for somewhere to have dinner after driving most of the day. This place is like an old fashioned diner. Good food and service. They had several special from Pork chops to prime rib. The Prime Rib was good along with large portions of veggie, soup or salad, toast and Potatoes. So much I couldn't eat it all. Plus pie for desert. read more

We stopped in this weekend for dinner. So glad we did! This is a fantastic traditional roadside diner. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The menu has something for everyone. They had a special on Saturday night, that caught my eye, so I went for it. It was a hand pressed burger, with Swiss cheese, thin sliced corn beef, bacon, a fried egg, grilled onions and hot sweet mustard on a stoneground bun. It came with fries and a cup of pork noodle soup (which was really tasty). All, for $10! It was amazing. This burger was cooked to perfection and the flavor combination... outstanding. My wife ordered the Chicken fried steak and loved it. It came with mashed potatoes, country gravy, green beans and a dinner roll. Plus your choice of soup or salad. The portion size was huge and she said it was really great. Before leaving, we grabbed a slice of homemade apple pie, to-go. So here's the deal. I noticed some reviews suggest it's not worth the stop. Everyone has their likes and I am sure every eatery can have a bad day. All I can say is our visit was great. This restaurant is a cross between fast food and cafe. It has a lot of choices. Breakfast is served all day, they have soups, salads, entrées and sandwiches. They even have protein platters, which is what I ordered. Our meals came with a salad, and they were pre-boxed with dressings also in a separate container. Salads were quite large. I ordered the salmon protein plate, which came with 4 ounces of salmon, two hard-boiled eggs and fresh sliced tomatoes. It tasted reasonably good but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. My husband got the New York strip steak. It was very thin and hence could not be cooked much on the outside to get that pleasing color. It looked a little gray. Because it was so thin, his medium rare came out more like medium well. I heard a customer at another table complain about his steak being too well-done, and it's because they were cut so thin. Husband said it tasted OK, about what he expected, but the bar was set low. The amazing aspect of this restaurant is how fast and how hard our server worked! Our server was friendly, efficient, and on the run the whole time. Kudos to her! There aren't that many restaurants in town, and several were closed early with today being 3 July, so we were grateful to be to find this place open. Great breakfast stop! Concise menu, plenty of seating, good coffee, and a concise menu. No substitutions, omissions or additions, though, so if you have any fussy eaters it might not work out for you. The portions are huge and food is fabulous. A very nice place with lot's of cool stuff to look at. I ordered 2 pancakes, 2 eggs over easy, bacon and coffee. The coffee was served hot and they make a good cup of java at this roadside eatery. When my food arrived I was greeted with 2 frisbee sized pancakes, 2 over easy eggs cooked perfectly and 4 thick slices of bacon on the edge of crispy. A very good breakfast at a reasonable price ( $ 11.00 total ). The server was very attentive and pleasant. I hope to return to sample something from the dinner menu. read more

Well as a person with more then a few years of restaurant experience this place at it's best is just a old school truck stop. . I Live local and been in now 3 times. If it were bad I would say . it's a good stop with lots of parking for trucks and RV's. Had the prime rib 2 times. both times not good dried out and not tasty. it's not a good cut of meat. Avoid that. hamburgers look good The real challenge is eating in a restaurant that smells like a sewer. it does. I walk in 3 times now and no one else seems to care. it's stinks. My friends were in town for the region's famed Bear Lake Trifecta and the hotel recommended the Ranch Hand in a truck stop. I was initially put off, but figured why not. Well, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety on the menu and the courteous staff. They had an awesome deal of the day: $7 for pesto shrimp pasta and salad or $10 with the salad bar. The food came out rather quickly. But, somehow my garlic bread was missing. The server worked to get it replaced and brought me some hot slices within minutes. This is the best food we have had in USA since we arrived two weeks ago on our road trip across the country. The quarter pounder burger is juicy, seriously fresh and tasty. Not overly greasy at all. Coming from someone who doesn't even like most burgers, this says alot! We also ordered the beef with jus (can't remember the exact name of the item)-- it came with very fresh beef slices with bread, a generous portion of fries, side sauce (which was a heavenly salty beef broth that satisfied my salt craving on a deep level) and a single pickle. We loved the fries so much we ordered more for our road trip. They also have a salad bar. Overall? Great value for money, friendly service, and awesome portions! Our family comes to the Bear Lake area every summer and it is a must that we go to the Truck Stop Diner for breakfast at least once! It is very inexpensive. However the portions are huge and the food is so good. The homemade hash browns are our favorite! The Western Omelet is cheesy goodness and you can't go wrong with their enormous pancakes! Waitress crystal triggered our service dog, she provoked my wife with interrogative demands, stating what service dogs do and don't do, which she has zero business doing by law, this obviously turned to conflict and my wife left, I had words with kale the "manager" hiring these Security guards in quite Idaho serving breakfast to the locals, whom had no foothold on who to defend, this is extremely concerning and the other owners will be notified, this will be reported to the BBB, our dog was working under the provisions of specific service dogs and this woman assumed what these dogs do and don't do in an extremely confrontational way which provoked the dog to do what it was trained for, Most likely because she was crotchety and under presser, she was the only waitress on staff, the whole world is short staffed, consider being more kind to the people you serve. read more

Love this place and always stop here whenever I'm traveling through the area. I had previously just had breakfast and was afraid to try something different when I passed there yesterday since the breakfast is always soooooooo good. But - I decided to try a sandwich on their lunch menu and OMG it was just as awesome as the breakfast. Their french fries are to die for! This is the letter I wrote to the Owner Hello Kale, I would like to share our experience with you on our recent visit to your Ranch Hand Trail Stop in Montpelier. Our party of 8 wanted to eat in your restaurant on Sunday August 19th. We entered the restaurant and a gal told us to pick a table. We walked to the table we wanted and the cute blonde gal told us this table needed to be cleaned and told us to pick another... Since our party was large I told her we could wait. With complete attitude she rolled her eyes at us and walked away. We then proceeded to just sit and wait for the table to be cleaned. After 10 minutes this gal came over and wiped the table down and left menus on the table. Another 10 minutes later she told us she would be over shortly. NO water at this point..... Anger building as she chats with a brown hair gal behind the bar. I then asked my entire party if they would like to leave and drive to Preston to find something else.... They all agreed and we all stood up and walked out.... As we are walking out the brown hair gal grabbed my last kid in the line and accused us of dining and dashing. I turned around and said we did not even get a glass of water so not sure what your talking about. Your business I am sure is very important to you and you lost out on a minimum of 80-90 dollar tab. Frustrated I went to the fuel side of our business to ask for a manager. They told me the blonde gal in the restaurant was the manager..... So I asked for the owners card. I just wanted you to know that you had several unhappy customers... I am also a blogger. I thought you should know and am trying to avoid this from happening to you again. We ordered prime rib and steaks all medium-rare. They all came well done. They brought out new steaks and we got a medium and medium well. The steaks were extremely dry and tough. The homemade mashed potatoes had no flavor and the dark brown gravy tasted like the packet mix gravy. Prime rib was so dry and salty I could only eat a few bites. Tye himemade roll was super dense and tasted like flour. The roll was also really dry. The salad bar had soggy fruit and the peas, and beans were also dried out. The baked potatoe was great, thank goodness. Dinner was way over priced for the poor quality of food. However the table next to us ordered breakfast and it looked amazing.
