We did not like the expectation of the company that we would leave a side gate open for them on service days or provide a key. There was little to no communication about the work being done or what would be necessary for the pool. They were very communicative and timely around asking for payment at the end of the month. They wrote all over our system in sharpie, and regularly failed to communicate between technicians, so we were answering the same questions over and over. Rates were competitive, but the value did not equate to the provided service or lack of communication--around service times, maintenance, and the services themselves. The technicians changed frequently, and we were often left feeling like we were added to a schedule as opposed to a regular weekly customer. Given everything, we will be seeking alternative options for this season.

Larry comes only if you complain or have a mechanical malfunction like a pool sweep problem or a pump motor, etc. What you get is a sub contractor or trainee who come to your house each week. I had 3 different guys in 3 years. I demanded the first two be replaced as they did nothing to help my issue and I truly believe I know as much as they did about pools. One even brought his girlfriend who was learning "the business." We hired Larry during our renovation of our pool. He was not involved with the remodel, it was done by a pool contractor. We had our pool done in a dark gray plaster and all the tiles on the water line, dam wall and spa are very expensive mosaic glass. Our pool soon became a calcified cement pond. I continually complained to the pool techs who came by each week and to Larry. Larry blames the water from the main line, the plaster, etc. etc. etc. Apparently, he and his bunch of trainees are blameless in his mind. My neighbor remodeled his pool with dark gray plaster and new tiles about the same time as mine and his pool to this day has not one speck of calcium. My pool looks like a zebra with all the white crap, my beautiful tiles are laden with calcium! The blue tiled spillway from the Spa to the pool is almost solid white! I had 2 pool experts come and take water samples from the main line and the pool and they were astounded at the horrible condition of my pool and each said "...it could have been avoided." We recently returned from a two week trip to Hawaii and found the pool full of algae. Larry's trainee didn't put enough chlorine in the water while we were gone, who knows if he even showed up? My 6 year old granddaughter said when she saw the pool "...it looks like the ocean" and it did! I could not get Larry to do anything that helped the calcium or to spend any time really cleaning it. Oh, he tried in a little spot here and there and tried a bunch of cleaners to no avail. He told me I should clean it! We even drained the pool twice, which is a pain. I don't think I needed to go through all this stuff! Long story short I paid a lot of money to remodel the pool and now I am paying over $1,000 to have the 3 year old plaster acid bathed to rid it of the massive calcium and the tiles must be blasted to get off all the calcium on the mosaic tiles. When you run your hand over the plaster it feels like 300 grit sandpaper! I am left "holding the bag" so to speak. I am very very sorry I used Kool Bear. I never got an apology for ruining my plaster and tile and making my pool look like no one ever cleans it or cares for it, only finger pointing by Larry at every one but Kool Bear. He had specific testing equipment to accurately measure different aspects of our pool's chemistry, and then to see exactly how to treat it to bring it into safer ranges. This was not being done with our previous service, so our chems were way off. Over the next 24-36 hours, he executed a plan to remediate the chemistry of our pool. And it worked! He spent another hour here cleaning and assessing hardware so we have an idea what will be done moving forward. Now I have peace of mind. Bob himself is knowledgeable and courteous. Staining, pitting, falling off - it needed to be redone within the first year. Adan (one of the owners) convinced me that pebble was the right way to go vs the standard plaster we tried the first time. But pebble is very rough to the touch. My wife and kids did not like the feel of any of the pebble options. Adan then informed me that they can "polish" the pebble so it would be as smooth as standard plaster. He sent me samples and all. It felt pretty damn smooth for something that had stones in it. So we did it. The crew came out and handled their business. I was home to supervise, after all it's very hard to find good help these days. By the time they were done troweling the new pebble, I noticed that the walls were not straight. The steps and floor were not level. The step tiles were plastered over. The corners were super sloppy. Dips and bumps everywhere vs smooth, flat, straight surfaces. Needless to say, we were absolutely not happy! I asked them to correct the issues before it hardened too much. They said they couldn't and that it would be handled by the guys who were polishing everything the next day. Now I admit, I have very high standards. But when you pay a high premium for a better product, then you pay even more to have it polished smooth as glass, that's what you expect to get. Well my friends, this customer got nothing like that. Albert (the other owner) came out the next day and saw what we were dealing with. He agreed, it was not the best plaster job. Despite that, he had his crew give it their all. Two guys worked their butts off for two days trying to address the issues the plaster guys left for them. The tried to grind things flat. Tried polishing the surfaces smooth. It just didn't work. The pebble job was bad again. The pool got some extra polishing and was salvaged, but the spa was garbage. Albert and Adan were both kind, professional, and understanding gentlemen. They looked at the obvious issues of the spa and agreed that it would need to be redone - again! Three months went by to get it on the schedule and they just finished this week. SOOOOOO much better this time! This is the spa we should have had on the first redo. I felt bad about pulling the trigger on the second redo, but there was no way to save that shoddy work. They came in with a much better crew this time and handled it. Ocean Pools made things right! That is very hard to come by these days. If I had left a review three months ago, it would have been one or two stars. That's not good for a company that comes "highly recommended" by someone you know. But, since their customer service and follow-through was so good they now get a solid, well-written five-star review! As mentioned earlier, it's so hard to find good help these days. Well, Ocean Pools did what was right for us. I recommend them to you for your pool. They do new pool construction, replaster jobs, repair work, and even weekly service. Just make sure you communicate well exactly what you want and need. But that is something every customer should ALWAYS do. And if something needs to be made right, speak up. I did, and Adan and Albert were listening. They made my pool and spa exactly as we wanted it.
