Chicken nachos taste like plain boiled chicken with canned refried beans sitting in what is supposed to be melted cheese but it has a very thin consistency, like queso water. My son had the same chicken and cheese water on his quesadilla. My husband called the "salsa" canned tomato sauce but I thought it at least had a hint of spice to it. Great place for Mexican food! We stopped here while visiting Cherokee and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I am glad that we did. It was wonderful. There is plenty of parking and lots of tables inside (both tables and booths). We were seated and served quickly and the staff was very friendly and professional. We were craving Mexican food so we decided to give this place a try! It had pretty good reviews so we thought we would be in for a treat. We thought wrong. As we sat down, we realized that the service was swift, with a bowl of tortilla chips were provided and paired with salsa to eat with it. The salsa was okay. Didn't have any seasoning and tasted similar to salsa that could be found at your local grocery store. I ordered the rib-eye and shrimp, which looked like it was going to taste fantastic! Only to find out that not only did it lack flavor, but it was also costed with cheese that almost made it unbearable to eat. The rib-eye itself was very thinly sliced, so not only did I not enjoy the meal, but I was also left pretty hungry. I can say the food was hot when served , the staff was SO POLITE with great service and due to laws in Cherokee county there is no alcohol allowed to be served. The friends we were with ordered fajitas which smelled and looked awesome and was a big portion! I got hard shell tacos with beans and rice and it was ok... nothing special not bad. Though they cannot sell alcohol, this place was off the hook. Don't let the look fool you, they had some unique dishes like the Pina Ranchera which I had. It was huge. This place sits in a shopping center behind the McDonalds. It's a rather bare bones place and I wasnt that impressed at first, but when I tasted the food there IS a difference over the regular run of the mill generally bad Mexican Food you find all across the South. The appearance was average but there was a better than average taste in the rice-nicely spiced, the enchilada sauce, and the chili relleno was really quite good! They had found some fresh poblano chilis. The taste was really nice and fresh. Often the chili relleno can turn into a grease bomb but this one I liked! I had lunch #6 for $5.99. They have 11 lunch specials from 11am-300p ONLY every say EXCEPT Sunday. You can get them other times for a $1 additional charge. 9 of the 11 lunch specials are $5.99 one $6.25 and one $7.25. The menu is quite extensive, and includes 4 vegetarian places but all 4 have cheese. There are also 8 childs places with 7 being $4.25 and one $4.99. The place is low on decor and very basic. Most people seem to just go in for a quick lunch, eat and go. The address is Whittier but its right on the road into Cherokee and appears to be inside tribal land according to google maps. read more

I wish I had taken a picture of the carne asada dinner - it was beautiful and huge! Everything was so tasty - even the lettuce tomato and avocado were perfect. Quality food and Cherokee don't go hand and hand. It's hard to find wonderful food on the reservation. And, that's not going to change at Rancho Viejo. While the food is priced fair, and the service is good, the quality here drops below the average line, but that's what you get when you choose to eat at the only Mexican restaurant on the reservation. We expected this but wanted to avoid all the greasy fast food and came anyway. Rancho Viejo does one thing well: they serve cheap Mexican in an area that doesn't offer an alternative. The salsa tastes homemade (rather than canned), the guacamole doesn't come out of a gun (like it does at Taco Bell) and the green chili sauce is better than you'd expect in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The chicken, however, is bland. The rice and beans are below average and I can't imagine anything will wow you. On the other hand, if you are craving Mexican you'll find value here and a quick turnaround on orders. read more

Absolutely delicious! Authentic Mexican Food in a beautiful and clean restaurant. They are very cautious in the wake of covid-19 , social distancing and only using every other table. Got fajitas to go, they were bland and flavorless. They gave us 2 flower tortillas. Every other time I got 4. I called them up and talked to the owner Javier. He lied to me and said that's what it says on the menu. I looked up the menu and it's not there. I called him back and he lied to me even more. I had no idea that nachos could be so flavorless. First of all...I don't believe cheese sauce should be so thin that it seeps completely through the nachos and puddles up under everything so as to make all the chips soggy. Secondly, there are Mexican seasonings out there, that you can use to season your chicken. Try buying some. The chicken tastes like it was thrown into a pot, covered with onions, jalapeños, and water, then stewed for days. I have never tasted meat, onions, and jalapeños that had absolutely no flavor. The chicken was so dry, I had trouble swallowing it. (Actually...this was the first time I even had large strips of overcooked, soggy onions, on any nachos I ever ate). Finally...looking around at all the people that were sitting there with full plates of food, and not touching it...should be an indication to management that your food needs some attention. Must be under new management, because our experience here last year was nothing like it. There's a Taco Bell in front of this restaurant...you'd be better off there. I'm trying to eat Keto and in a small town this was one of my only choices. I had the Fajita platter minus the tortillas. I had the mix of chicken, beef & shrimp and while very tasty, the beef was tiny little strips of shoe string beef. I would probably just get the chicken if I ate here again. read more

From start to finish everything was great! The chips were warm and the salsa had the perfect heat! We got the fajitas for two with all the meats and the wife and I couldn't even get close to eating it all. Excellent service the entire way through the meal as well.
