Thinking it might be dental-related, I started calling around trying to find help. Since I'm not a full-time resident in the area, I needed a practice willing to take on a new patient in an emergency situation. After several calls and multiple offices turning me away, Centre Smile Dental said, "Of course -- come in now." From the moment I walked into the Paw Paw location, I was welcomed with smiles and compassion. I filled out paperwork, had X-rays done, and before I knew it, after thorough consultation with Doctor Joseph, I had two teeth extracted due to a severe infection. People don't realize how dangerous a mouth infection can become if left untreated -- it can spread to the bloodstream or even the brain. Within 20 minutes of the extractions, I already started feeling relief. I'm incredibly appreciative that Centre Smile Dental was willing to see me on such short notice, especially right before a holiday weekend and being an out of towner. All the front desk ladies do. The hygienists and the dental assistants are absolutely amazing as well. The dentists are nice and quick! Don't prolong your visit by making your wait. They are kind and give you a lot of positive feedback instead of critiquing you. There is a tv and radio for you to pay attention to if you want. And every room feels pretty secluded, so you don't need feel as vulnerable as at other dentist offices I have been to. Dr. Rowland and his staff could not be more accommodating and kind to the fearful visitor like me. Rather than treat me like I had a problem--that all I had to do was "think differently" and I would suddenly be no longer afraid--they took care of me, offered me anything and everything I needed to make me comfortable (topical numbing to make sure I didn't feel the shot), and on top of it, they treated me with compassion. I can still remember the first time I was there for a filling, and Dr. Rowland sat there and spoke to me while squeezing my shoulder comfortingly as the numbing set in, helping me get my mind off what was about to happen. Now, while I still can't say I look forward to dental work, at least I don't dread it. Incidentally, I also appreciate how well the staff knows their patients--Dr. Rowland always asks after my family and remembers conversations from previous visits. Our requirements were a dentist who was also an orthodontist and someone who could tolerate my extreme fear of dentists. My Mom has been seeing Dr. Allen for a number of years and she suggested I call their office just to talk to them about a potential appointment. I called and was so impressed by their intake I scheduled both Mr. MVP and I for cleanings. Mr. MVP and I both see Dr. Harris and we have both seen a number of different hygienists. Mr. MVP has been to the office once, while I have been over a dozen times because I have a spring retainer that needs to be adjusted every two weeks. Dr. Harris and I know each other really well. At our first appointment we were able to go over everything including our medical history, our special diet and our concerns with our last dentist. We both had x-rays taken and had our teeth cleaned. At Dr. Harris' office they give you an option of either a traditional dental scraping tool (the metal tool that makes the really terrible noise) or a water powered tool. It was at this point I knew I had found my dental heaven. These tools are amazing. Also, I was told by my hygienist that she could simply skip the polishing part at the end if I preferred. WHAT!? Yes please! I thought the polishing tool was mandatory and for years I was accepting it like an adult, but now I was learning it's an option. For those of you with dental phobia or sensory issues like me, this is huge. We also discussed our toothpaste and how abrasive it is. I had no idea this was an actual thing, but abrasive toothpaste is not great for teeth. Dr. Harris suggested we switch to a different brand (not even one they were selling, just a supermarket brand!) to help extend the life of our tooth enamel. I was also able to ask about my double jointed jaw. A problem I have been living with for nearly my entire life. My jaw gets stuck open almost 70 to 100 times per day and it cracks very loudly and painfully when I yawn, eat, talk and laugh. Dr. Harris suggested I try a spring retainer for about a year to move my jaw back in line. A simple $300 fix for a miserable problem I have asked other dentists, periodontists and orthodontists and no one was able to help me. My last dentist would just smile and tell me that I would just have to live with it. We really like Dr. Harris' office. The staff is always friendly, without being insanely perky and when I need to get an appointment to get my retainer adjusted I am always able to schedule it that same week (sometimes that same day). We are extremely glad we switched dentists and feel very comfortable with Drs. Allen, Harris and the entire staff.

When the environment is well done, and the attention to detail is clear, my fears were gone. I knew that this was a place where people knew what they were doing. The soft music, the headsets that were programmed to my own liking, the smiling and soft spoken knowledgeable staff put me at ease and kept me at ease.
