My friends and I came here for a work outing on Sunday where we brought some arts & crafts - painting, pencils, markers, and pictures to paint. There's picnic tables outside which was perfect and fit all of us! They also have seating inside. They're dog friendly outside and they have dog biscuits and water bowls too. Attended a wedding reception here last weekend. I drank the English bitter on nitro and enjoyed it. The bartenders were friendly and helpful. It was a very hot day and the air conditioning didn't seem able to keep the place cool enough for most of us. It's a small place with a patio and alley, and has a parking lot in the back. I tried a flight of 5 beers (flights are available with 4 or 6 beers too), I chose the Mosaic Pale Ale, Method IPA, Lupuo IPA, Keagan Imperial Stout and Windswell IPA. We arrived at Random Row on a Monday evening. Despite it being a Monday there were lots of people having drinks out front. Apparently on Mondays there is a running group which begins, ends and drinks at the brewery - fun! There wasn't a ton of beers on the menu which I felt like trying-- I love wheat beers, goses and sours, but my friends loved the selection. There were a bunch of TVs on airing various sports. Always a win, in my book! The hibiscus brew I ordered was unique and slightly tart. The floral notes were apparent, without being too over-powering. We ordered pizza, but at around 8pm they were only offering white pizzas (no red sauce). The pizza crust was chewy and delightful! The use small cup pepperoni which crisps up like magic. We scheduled an event with Random Row for Sunday evening trivia-- via email, they reserved their "indoor beer garden" for us and set up a tab for our large group. When we arrived, they did not honor the reservation and our group was forced to scramble for tables outside. We came to Random Row right when they opened. Everyone was spaced out and staff was seen cleaning regularly. Everyone was also following the mask rule. In the strange times we are in, I appreciated the staff doing everything they could to make people feel comfortable. On to the beer. They were doing flights with options to try 4, 5, or 6 beers. You could also order pints or beers to go. My husband and I each ordered a flight of 4. My flight included two of their seltzers, a berliner weisse, and a boysenberry pale ale. I enjoyed all the beers. I really loved the phase 2 berliner weisse- it was light and a great beer to enjoy during a long summer night. Beer was affordable and staff was great. We went here the night of the day the Foxfield Races were held. That might explain why it was so dead. The beer was pretty tasty after I found the right one (Maibock). The food left a lot to be desired. Service was decent until we went outside to eat. I asked for an ice water which I like to have when I eat and the waitress told me they didn't have water. Then she said they didn't have ice but she would see what she could do and never returned. Found out from another employee on the way out that they have a water dispenser by the front door. This place is awesome. The fermentation tanks are inches from the bar. At the bar, it feels like you are drinking in the middle of the brewing process, which is awesome. My only issue was that the service could have been better. We were quickly approached and served with our first beer, but then the bartender disappeared. Amazing local brewery! Their beers are so good and flights are for great price. All the beers they serve are brewed here and served fresh. I can't believe it took me this long to try it out. There's plenty of parking and plenty of seating indoors and some outdoors. They usually serve Mona Lisa pizza and sometimes have other food trucks like Blue Ridge Pizza come over and serve food. We started off with a flight of 6 4oz beer tastings ($8). My favorite was the Biotic Belgian (8.3% abv) and the Supernova (9.0% abv). Although the abv is relatively high, the beers don't taste bitter at all. In fact, the Biotic Belgian has a sweet beginning taste to it and a very smooth finish. The Bold Belgian was pretty good as well; it's 4% Bold Rock cider so that added a really unique flavor to it. The red ale and Method were also quite delicious but it's slightly more bitter than the Belgians and the Supernova. Definitely recommend doing flights here; it's cheaper than getting 12oz drinks. They also have growlers and crowlers (32oz cans) for those who want to buy some beer back. I ended getting 4 crowlers ($11 each) of 2 Supernovas and 2 Biotic Belgians- that's how much I enjoyed their beers! Service was fantastic and ambiance was peaceful and mellow. The bartenders were personable and friendly and also knowledgeable about the beers at Random Row. Will definitely be back again! So I majorly goofed. I thought a Yelp event was today and in fact it is Monday. Lucky for me Random Row was happy to serve me despite this and and gentleman who I can only assume is a part of the brewing processes was happy to provide additional insight... We decided to have two 4 beer-flights and between us we had 6 options from the tap. We especially liked the NEIPA and the Bold Belgian (51% Belgian and 49% Bold Rock Cider) was unique and delicious. The space is awesome. They tout being family friendly with lots of games and actual high chairs (!). We will definitely return with kids in tow when the weather is warmer. read more

So #realtalk -- When I first went to Random Row, they had just opened and I wasn't feeling it. Their beer was ok, but nothing stood out to me. I have given them some time and I they have found their groove. I also have found my favorite brew. St. Love Abbey Ale is a perfect Belgian Golden Ale. It is one of my favorite beers brewed in the area. It is typically brewed around Valentines Day. Tuesday is the day to get it, half price growler fills. They have no wait staff (which is not particularly an issue), but if you're going to force everyone to get what they need from the bartenders, they damn well better be customer service oriented. It was clear I was not following their rules by not standing at a specific (undesignated) spot from which to place my order. Eye contact was clearly made and I had my flight card in my hand, but at least 2 other customers who came up to the bar 3feet over from me where the bartender was standing got helped. Another guy walked up behind the bar and helped someone he seemed to know, looked at me and walked away. The only reason for all these details is for the benefit of the owner(s), in case they care. Overall all I would call the beer very good. Even the ones I didn't care for were well done and fit their style. Stopped in on a weeknight for a beer tasting. They have numerous options - four, five or six pours of any that they make. I got a five pour and was not disappointed. All there beers were up to par in their respective categories. I especially liked the Mosaic Pale Ale and seasonal Marzen. Service was friendly and there is ample seating. They allow outside food and have some menus for inspiration on delivery, as well as some frozen pizzas for sale. Every time I have been in there has been an event with lots of children. It was love at first sight for Random Row and I, no question about it! The atmosphere is just great. It has a rustic/ industrial vibe with the mix of the wood and metals, which I just absolutely love. There is a ton of space and a lot of different seating options, but it was already crowded at 1pm on its second day of being officially opened. Not crowded in a bad way, but in a way that it should be full at 1pm on a Saturday when college football is on TV. Anyways, it doesn't surprise me. They've got a great venue and fantastic beer from what I was able to try. The Doughboy Dunkel was a favorite of mine, being that I'm a fan of all thing malty, especially as the weather cools down. The staff seemed nothing but friendly and helpful, and there are even other options offered, like cold brew coffee, for example. There wasn't a food truck present when we were there, but looking at the schedule, it looks like they will be there pretty often. Thurs-Sunday by the looks of it. Also a big deal for me- they have the option for 10 oz and 4 oz beers if you aren't wanting a whole Pint. This makes me very happy, as I often like to try a couple different beers, but don't have a big enough stomach (or a high enough alcohol tolerance) to try full pints of several beers! The first thing to note about random row is that they serve their flights on slices of log with spots for each of the beers. They typically have eight beers on tap but their flights are only for 4/5/6 beers. They are usually happy to accommodate a request for a flight of all eight though. The space is very clean and open and the staff are friendly. Right behind the bar they have a lot of their brewing equipment but it is set up in a clean way. The bar offers some snacks and apparently they have food trucks there some times (I have never been there at a food truck time). They are also pretty relaxed about you bringing in your own food or snacks. The beers themselves are good and well rounded for the most part. The Ragged Mountain Rye and Red Shift are especially excellent. The lighter beers are fine but there is nothing distinctive about them. The flights are usually four ounce pours. Recently I also inquired about beer they sell for consumption off-premise. They have kegs to sell but they don't bottle their beer so they are better for large gatherings. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful on any front. Random Row is probably my favorite brewery setting in Charlottesville. read more
