Would NOT recommend. Low-Quality Work and distrust. We had a negative experience with Raneri & Long. After researching companies and receiving several quotes we settled on Raneri & Long. Everything was fine until the work started. Attempts to cut corners were made by installing a new roof over dry-rotted and damaged wood--even though the estimate clearly stated that replacing damaged wood was mandatory. Communication was lacking during the installation and there was not onsite project manager as stated. I personally inspected the work each day identifying several discrepancies with the work. This was chalked up to a "language barrier" and a "miscommunication". The dry rotted and damaged wood was ultimately replaced, but it was because I inspected the installation job myself. To make the experience worse, the roof leaked in the garage during the last rainstorms a few weeks ago. They came and made repairs, however, the leak should have never happened on a brand new install. The gutter installation was shoddy and sloppy. There are several scratches and globs of sealant which I was told "the bigger the blob the better the job". When expressing our concerns with the owner we were met with childish push back and told "you've never made a mistake?" Well not a $30k mistake. Super disappointed that I went through Yelp and asked for a solar quote and this was a company the request for quote went to. The owner replied and asked for our phone number and said someone from the office would call the following day. No one called. 2-3 weeks later I did the same thing through Yelp to asked for roofing quotes. It sent to this company again and I got the same message from owner requesting phone number and said someone would contact us the following day. I messaged the owner back and told him he responded a few weeks before to my solar request and no one ever contacted us. He apologized and said that wasn't their normal practice and assured me someone would contact us. 6 days later and we still have not been contacted. Super disappointing. read more

I'm older than most Yelpers so I haven't visited the site a lot lately, but I wanted to let people know what we experienced with this company. Got bids from three roofers recommended by people on a neighborhood app. While all were comparable - we chose Raneri and Long because it's a family-owned company that's been around since the 1980s - and - it had the best policies and attitude about providing great service. Dave Hancock is the boss - and his grown kids, extended family and trusted crews run the show. Chatting with his workers - we learned most have been on board forever - so not a lot of turnover here, nice to see. SIX THINGS WE DISCOVERED: 1) They WON'T accept money up-front. No deposits. That was a first. If you pay up front - you've lost control. I think they know that - which is why its policy puts customers at ease. We didn't pay until the job was done. 2) No sub-contractors. A big deal because it's common for contractors to "sub out" their work to specialists with whom you have NO leverage. But R&L is an "all-in-one" biz that only does what it knows, i.e., roofing, solar, windows and gutters and a few other things. They don't do paint but they know who can. They don't hit you with stuff you won't need. 3) These guys are big about what they call, "trust and verify" - so that common issues like dry rot which causes leaks - you don't take their word for it. They brought down three rotted panels for us to inspect. BTW, you should expect dry rot because it's usually the main cause of leaks. 4) These guys aren't "hired hands" for "spot jobs." They're on the payroll, some for many years. They show up in big red trucks and vans - wearing red logo t-shirts. Shout out to Hector, Jesus, Carlos on-site and Emely and Perla at Mission Control. Can't remember all the names we dealt with, sorry, but they were all A+ - and it felt like everyone on-site was "in charge." 5) They gave us an estimate that was gold. Potential over-runs for dry rot, replacing panels and fascia - were detailed up front down to the linear foot - which INCLUDED materials AND labor. This is key because R&L does NOT use the term, "man-hours" like others - which can lead to "sticker shock" based on worker head counts. 6) They called and emailed us at the end of EACH WORK DAY - to update what they did - and what they were going to do the next day. (Ours was a five-day job.) There was no mess nor stray garbage left behind. LESSONS LEARNED: * The cost for new tile - is only marginally higher than re-using old tile. Because our home is more than 20 years old, we went for the new tile. On the first day, ten people came out at 730a and put tarps around our house and in our garage. By 2p, they had taken out about 2200 square feet of old and dirty tile. Days 2-3 involved ripping out and pounding in new boards, adding water-tight layers of black synthetic "underlayment" on top - (and not the old felt stuff made of tar) - and installed new tile. Days 4-5 were all about installing more new tile - and we saw a lot of precision sawing to make everything fit perfect. Bonus day 6 was us deciding at the last minute to replace a few dingy gutters. * Turns out this company has a lot of videos which break down what they do and why. DO look at them. Browse other reviews - and you'll notice how Dave Hancock and his family ALWAYS respond, esp. to issues that come up because no two roofs are alike. For me - (vs. my wife, who just loved Dave's "old school" manner) - R&L's desire to address problems "publicly" - sealed the deal. It's serious about protecting its brand - and plans to be around "forever." * Our roof is done and it's spectacular. Great service and clean-up - as if they were never here. A lot of good roofers are out there - but we chose one that felt like an experienced surgeon - with calm and caring manners. They will work with you on ANYTHING. TLDR - Be prepared for this business to "decline the opportunity to work with you" if you don't accept their "no pressure" solar quote that they will send you along with your roofing quote. If you are looking for a reliable roofing company that commits to standing behind their work, don't waste your time with Raneri and Long and look elsewhere. I had several people who used Raneri and Long for their roofing recommend them to me (none of them got solar from them as far as I know). I requested a quote for a lift and relay job for my roof by calling them, and had an estimate from Dave via email before he even showed up. In a couple of days, Dave came to my house and explained the quote to me. He did provide some good information, however, he asked me if I was considering solar. I was honest with him, and told him that I am considering it and I already have a few great quotes. But I am still doing my research and I haven't even signed a contract yet. He asked if he could send me a "no pressure" solar quote, and I agreed to consider it if it was competitive. Things seemed to be going great until this point. Dave explained to me that having solar and roofing done by different contractors results in a "he said she said" situation when it comes to warranty for leaks. I'll give him the benefit of doubt and say that it's is a fair point, but that doesn't mean I am willing to spend more money for solar over the market rate for an undersized solar system. They sent me a solar quote that was overpriced compared to quotes I already have, and did not correctly size the system even after I had sent them my detailed requirements. They recommended a 4.0 kW system for 8000+ kWh of my required usage at $3.25 per watt. Ignoring the fact that a 4.0 kW system is going to be nowhere near 8000 kWh of yearly production on my roof that is facing East-West, I already have multiple other quotes below $2.85 per watt with better warranties (some including warranty for roof leaks). I emailed Dave the next day and said I would like them to do the roofing work (since that was what I originally contacted them for), but I had better quotes for solar. I am not even in contract with a solar company yet, so at this point, Dave and his team could have won more of my business by revising their solar quote or at least trying to understand how my other solar quotes are better. However, I got an email from one of his staff members saying that since I will be choosing another contractor for solar, Dave "would prefer to decline the opportunity at this time" for my roofing work. LOL. Well, guess what Dave? Some people who recommended your business to me already got solar installed by different providers. It's a free market, and it's competitive. And it sounds like your business doesn't like to stand behind their work, but is rather looking to avoid as much responsibility as possible before even doing any work. I would suggest that you stop wasting the time of your potential customers who are going through a stressful process of finding a reliable and trustworthy contractor by offering them "no pressure" quotes when you don't mean it. It's safe to say that I dodged a bullet, and I won't be recommending this business to anyone. ----- EDIT - Responding to Dave's comments below. 1. No, I don't remember you mentioning that you are reluctant about the roofing job. That would have been the end of our conversation and I would not have asked you to do my roof, I am not looking for a "reluctant" contractor. 2. Yes, they are happy with their roof right now, and solar from somebody else, until they have a problem with their roof that they will call you to fix. You obviously won't honor their warranty, and I'd rather not be in that situation. 3. I've attached a picture of the details I included with my request, clearly stating that I have a new Tesla which won't be accounted for in the electric bills for last year. I also mentioned a new electric water heater, and estimates of my usage. You may think your team is correct, but they completely ignored information that I clearly provided unlike other solar providers. I don't need to see your report because it doesn't take my requirements into account. 4. You are driving my point home by saying "to not have to take responsibility". There is no way for you to control who your roofing customers choose as their solar provider after you do their roof. The bottom line is that your solar quote was neither competitive nor did it meet my requirements. I declined solar, so you decided to avoid responsibility with the roof, as you've clearly stated in your response. I think this is important information for your future customers to know, maybe you should put that disclaimer on your website. 5. Yes, I dodged a bullet. We are both entitled to our opinions. Just before all of this San Diego Rain. I had new pavers installed and with that came the idea of protecting them from that roof drip stain that will take place over time. So I quickly wanted to have gutters installed. I called Ranier and Long and within 5 days had gutters installed around my whole home. I found one spot during that rain that wasn't working correctly and they came out and fixed it within 2 days and even added an additional countermeasure for the issue I was having. I couldn't be more pleased with their services and products. The crew that came out was very kind and patient with me. They worked very quickly and cleaned up their work before they left. Raneri and Long just finished our roof, so they're fresh in my mind. We got a new roof over our heads just in time for this rain, so I'm thankful for that. We met with a rep back in October, and they were booked up until January. It seems a lot of people have been using their savings for home repair during this pandemic since none of us are traveling/going on vacation. So be prepared for that. The project took about two weeks from start to finish. The roof itself looks great, and with this rain, appears to be doing what roofs are supposed to. I'm not sure what other roofing companies are like, and while everyone I dealt with was friendly, I can't say I would recommend Raneri and Long to anyone looking to get their roof done. My main issue with Raneri and Long is the mess they left because they cut corners putting up tarps. On the first day, I opened up our garage for them so they could tarp it off while they worked (we have an exposed roof in the garage). Naturally, nails, wood fragments, old shingles, etc. fall as they strip off the old roof. I expected that. The problem is that they tarped off MOST of our garage, not all of it. It seems like they put tarps as high as they were willing to reach, not wall to wall as they should've. They taped the tarps to the front of shelving units instead of putting the tarp OVER the whole shelving unit to save time. So guess who had shelves covered in roof debris? This guy. They also didn't put a tarp over the retracted garage door (which was left open for them to work). When they left the first day, I pressed the button to close the garage door, and it made this awful crackly/crunching noise and struggled to close. Roof debris was all over the door and worse, in the rails. I had to sweep nails and roof chunks out of the rails, so the garage door wheels could roll properly again. There was also roof debris all around the perimeter of our garage, in our sink, on the tops of all of our shelves and cabinets, on top of our water heater, etc.. You would think they would offer to clean that up if you brought that to their attention. I e-mailed then to let them know about it, and got a response saying she would "let the higher ups know" and that was the end of that. For the record, they do sweep outside everyday once they're finished working, but they're not thorough. If you want to spend an hour or two everyday doing extra clean up for a company, then go ahead and go with Raneri and Long, but I think you should go support a different business. I also have been finding cigarette butts all over. I even found one ON our new roof while doing a walk through after they finished. No one smokes in this house. It seems like a bit of a fire hazard to leave cigarette butts ON a client's new roof, so I'm not sure why they allow that. I brought that to their attention, and got no apology. No offer to clean up or do better. I would expect with any roofing company to have to do a little cleanup of our own. Raneri and Long made little to no effort to apologize or correct these mistakes when they were brought to their attention. They did unhook the vent from our AC unit in our garage and forgot to hook it back up. They also knocked a cable loose and no one fixed it until it was brought to their attention. To their credit, they did fix both these things after I asked them to. It seemed like I had to constantly ask them to fix this or that back to the way it was (they did), or to remind them to tarp this or that properly (they never did). They also forgot to take the tarp off of our pool. It took them 3 days to get someone out to do that. They sent someone out to pick up all the rotted wood and shingles, but their truck ran out of space and they didn't bring a broom, so they even left a mess when they did that. My experience with Raneri and Long was that I had to be super hands-on, and micro-manage then in a sense. I'm not sure if that's normal, but I'd prefer to just have a company that does stuff properly from start to finish. This was a long review. Thanks if you read this far. I hope this helps to better inform the next person looking to get their roof done. Old brown wood shingles have been on the roof of my house since 1961, so it was high time for a new roof. I have never before contracted for a new roof, and I was aware of the horror stories of half-finished jobs, exorbitant charges [new roofs are expensive!] and shoddy work. From my initial contact with Raneri & Long, to the conclusion of the job, everything was handled with the utmost professionalism and in a timely manner. I am so thankful we chose Raneri and Long for our roofing and solar project. We had at least 8 different consultations with various companies and Raneri was our last one. I already had my mind made up on proceeding with another company before they came out but our consultant James changed that decision very quickly. Anyone who is in the market for solar knows how pushy the sales reps can be and how many of them tell you different things. They tell you whatever you want to hear just to get you to sign a contract. James was the first person out of all the pitches we had been given that I felt was 100% honest and upfront with us. No smoke and mirrors, just honest hard facts. He was kind, respectful and was available ANY time I had questions or needed help throughout the entire process. We also were concerned about our roof and had been getting mixed reviews on whether or not it needed to be replaced. James got on the roof to check things out, contacted Dave, the owner, sent him pictures and got his opinion on what we needed to do. When it came time for the project to begin the crew showed up right on time and immediately got to work. Our entire old roof (double shingled) was torn off by midday. The second half of the day they replaced 6 pieces of plywood and installed our water barrier before leaving for the weekend. The crew was very fast, efficient, respectful of our property, and cleaned up after themselves. The new roof, upgraded attic ventilation and the solar panel mounts were installed in less than 2 days. The crew that put the solar panels and hooked them up were here for one day. Start to finish was 2.5 weeks from tear off, to receiving our PTO from SDG&E. As I type this review my neighbors across the street are having their roof torn off. I am absolutely baffled at the difference in our experience versus what I am witnessing going on over there. I cannot say this loudly or clearly enough, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL! It is worth the money and quality matters. I hired Raneri & Long after getting about 4-5 quotes to replace our roof. I was pleasantly surprised that they came on the less expensive end of the spectrum, especially considering they were one of only a handful master elite roofers. Dave is very friendly and customer-centric along with everyone else I spoke to in their office. When it came time for the work, the team was fast and efficient, wrapping up the whole project in 3 days. There was one hiccup where I misunderstand the wood provision in the contract. It's a way of having the customer pay for the wood at the current market price so that in the event a ton of wood needs to be replaced bc of dry rot or termite damage, you have some control over your costs. With lumber prices being crazy, this seemed like a safe route to go. What I didn't understand was that this cost is a lump sum, regardless of the extent of the damage found. If they find a ton, you're golden. If they find very little, well you're kind of screwed lol. I thought that for the latter situation, I'd only have to pay the difference but that's not the case. Dave was really understanding though. Instead of charging me the $3,000+ worth of wood that I originally agreed to, he only charged me the $90 they used. I would recommend you only go with this provision if you have a really strong suspicion that your roof is heavily damaged. I'm pretty impressed that Dave was sympathetic about my misunderstanding. I feel like other companies would've gladly taken that $3000. Although that cost him some $$$ today, it'll pay off in the long run bc we'll definitely be recommending them to any friends or family in the future! Needed a new roof for a small rental property. It's a twin home (attached at garage wall) so needed to get a rate for the entire roof across both properties. Mike from Raneri and Long was very accommodating, both for price and for time frame. As soon as we got the contract signed, they were out the next day, and the whole roof was put on and in beautiful shape within 2 1/2 days. I highly do NOT recommend doing business with Raneri and Long. The owner, Dave Hancock, himself requested I put up this terrible review of them as he hung up on me. Learn from my mistake- I got my house roof redone and solar installed in Nov 2020 and recently tried to do business with them again but was treated horribly because of a mistake on their end. One thing to consider if you are getting a roof done other than price: you may have to deal with them in the future for any warranty issues so you should choose a company that is professional, communicates well and resolves issues or mistakes as they arise without holding it against you. This company is not one that you want to deal with long term. Specifically the owner, Dave, is hostile and extremely unprofessional- when I called him for clarification on an issue he didn't even give me 2 minutes on the phone before he hung up on me. Dude, you know we still may have to deal with you in the future if any warranty issue arises and this is how you treat RETURNING customers? Please save yourself the time and energy and go with a more competent roofing company. The backstory if you're interested: We redid our roof and had solar installed in Nov 2020. Our first experience was OK except they installed our solar panels at an incorrect angle per our communications and it was not optimal for energy generation. After multiple back and forth they reluctantly corrected the mistake after Dave's son confirmed the angles were incorrect. (by the way, our solar panels generated more after they corrected the angles, so we were right) About a month ago we decided to redo our garage roof & install additional solar panels. Dave came out to our house because his usual estimators could not come. He knew we were returning customers (I told him) and I gave him my full name and contact info. We needed our roof done right away and their timeline didn't work for our renovation project so we decided to only move forward with solar. Right away they increased our estimate by $2000 and Dave called to mansplain that a business has to worry about "profits" (obviously, but I thought you were at least supposed to pretend you care about your customer). I told him that I'm aware of the concept of profits but their estimates need to be transparent and should indicate if their pricing is for roof alone, solar alone, or for roof and solar together instead of just increasing the price an arbitrary amount. Ultimately he reduced the price by $1000 and "met us in the middle" although I'm still not sure why the cost was increased. We agreed on a price and signed the contract only to receive a cryptic email that we "misrepresented ourselves" and they are revoking their offer. We didn't receive a call to discuss amicably like any good business would. Upon calling for clarification Dave was extremely hostile and didn't allow me to speak. He stated he "absolutely wouldn't work" with us again because we asked for the mistake with our solar panel angles to be corrected when they were installed. He said we were trying to hide who we were because we were using a different email address. Not sure how I was trying to lie about my identity when I met with him in person at my house, gave him my name and I gave them the SDGE bill they requested. He hung up on me after stating I can "leave all the bad reviews on Yelp or wherever that you want, I DON'T CARE". So here I am leaving a bad review on Yelp. Honestly I'm more upset that I chose to give this company my business in the first place. Learn from my mistake- don't waste your time and money on them. I highly recommend Raneri & Long!! I purchased my home in November 2019 knowing that the concrete (barrel style tile) roof was original and around 40+ years old and would probably have to be replaced during my ownership. Lift and re-lay was really not a viable option for me as, aside from the barrel style tile not really matching the design of the house, it was a discontinued W shape tile and I would more than likely would have had a spot on the roof that now had different tiles and would not match. I got 6 different bids that varied in price by over $22,000 (lowest bid to highest bid). Raneri's bid was well below the highest and since they also do solar and I would not end up with a finger pointing match between a solar company and a roofing company should any problems arise in the future, I went with Raneri. I could not be happier! Their employees were friendly, professional and exceptionally skilled. The whole job took about 10 days (4200 SF roof) and my lawn and patio areas were always cleaned up at the end of every day. My new roof looks absolutely amazing! And I have piece of mind knowing that the installation is covered by a 15 year warranty from a company that has been in business since 1986! I have a leak in my roof, which is not quite 8 yrs old and after looking at things they said that they wouldn't repair anything, as they couldn't warranty it, even though they say that they do roof repairs. But, instead, they would recommend re-roofing, and that that would come with a 10yr warranty. What? I did appreciate the honesty, and suggestions, but seriously, why say they do repairs, when in reality they don't. Kind of a waste of time for both parties. So, unless you have a older roof that really should be replaced, don't call if you only really need a repair. read more

We had a really weird interaction with the owner when we were shopping around for a new roof. We had multiple estimates, as any homeowner is supposed to get and wanted to make the best decision as we had a lot of water damage over the winter. We weren't going to automatically go with the cheapest and had many different factors to consider including material of the roof, cost of wooden beams, warranty, time frame due to water damage, and finally overall price. We followed up with the company by calling them and asking specifically about fees for paying with a credit card vs. cash only and also asking if they offered any military discounts (seeing as how this is San Diego county). The female receptionist transferred me by phone to the owner and maybe he misunderstood her, but when he picked up the phone he said he was going to bring the contract over right away for us to sign it. I told him to wait up and that I had some questions for him before we decided to go ahead. He then got very angry at us and said he wasn't going to do a bidding war with other companies when I asked him about the credit card option as well as military discount. I let him know that was fine and said that we would go with one of the other estimates on the table. I'm glad he showed his true colors before we agreed to his estimate! I can't even imagine what it would be like to deal with this company had we had a problem with the roofing job! To make matters worse, 5 minutes later we got a call from a Mexican guy who said that the owner of this company just called him and said we were looking for a roofer to do an under-the-table job for cheap without a warranty, which we found very insulting! That couldn't be further from the truth! This company lost a $12,000 contract from us due to their poor customer service. We went on to pick another roofer and were extremely happy with the result, as well as the customer service. I would urge anyone else to do the same! In response to the owner: I am NOT anonymous. My first name and last initial are present on my profile as well as the city I reside in. If you look in your records, you will find the estimate you gave my husband and I along with our e-mail correspondence. We have all the paperwork saved and this is EXACTLY how you do business. According to numerous other 1-star reviews, your customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Got a brand new roof and solar from Raneri & Long. They were always responsive and helpful with all our questions (first time home owners). The roofers also took the time to clean the yard up from all the asphalt debris and even cleaned up our neighbors yard, which was greatly appreciated! I have vetted more roofers than the CIA.... this company is the very BEST... and that's why I chose them.... I just had this feeling they would take really good care of me and my much needed new roof... I have personally pushed off a new roof for my home, due to the CA drought for over six years... but this hundred year old roof (no lie) has run its course... IT'S DEAD... No amount of Henry's Roof Patch is going to save this thing...I mean I had designated drip buckets if it rained and knew exactly where to place them... The final straw was when water was coming in through my recessed lighting... that day.. I called Raneri over to the house... and signed the contract... after I had had my estimate for over six months. I was very worried, this was going to be the biggest repair to my home I had ever completed, and I have had MANY run ins with shady contractors and sales guys. Something was different with this company. Immediately... I felt like they were family, shoot, even the owner, a guy named Dave (white hair) talked to me a few times on the phone to answer all of my many questions.... Yes.. I am one of "those" people... I NEED TO KNOW all the details... This company is truly a "well oiled machine" and logistically perfected as well.... I hope this review helps you make a roofer decision, and helps you with your new roofing installation process from what I learned... (Two Days prior to install) I have a flat roof, no attic, so I had to tape and drape the entire contents of my home... I recommend, if you don't want dust etc.. falling throughout your home....go to Lowes and buy a bunch of plastic drop cloths and gorrilla tape and protect the interior if you have a flat roof....my home became a convertible due to all the wood rot I had, so you could see the sky from inside my home! (Day One) Tear down crew shows up bright and early, my scheduled time was 7:30am, they were here for a couple hours and then they were gone. If you have pets inside afraid of loud noises... I recommend securing your pets, It is very loud. (Day Two) 7:30 am, Materials delivery Team delivered the roofing materials, and even had a crane delivered to place the material on top of the roof. Wow....Then the wood assessor came and assessed the wood that needed to be replaced, wood rot etc. The installation crew began to remove failing wood. (Day Three-Day Five) 7:30 am, The installation crew again showed up and continued to remove and replace damaged wood and fascia boards. Every day until 4:30 and always left the yard spotless. Kind hearted workers. Ran a huge magnet over my yard to clear any nails. They even ordered rain the night my roof was finished to give the new roof a test drive.... NO LEAKS! From the estimator, to sales, to tear down and install crew(whom I spent a week with) Emily and Axa in reception, this company first treated me like family, not a just another customer... and gave me the absolute very best roof and absolute very best experience. The excellent solar job by Raneri and Long at our house was completed with inspection by the City today. We have been watching our SDG&E bill increase every year since we purchased in 1979. Enough was finally enough. We kept thinking about solar. We love this family run business. The owner Dave and Daughter-in-Law came out first to discuss our job. We were amazed to get a quote with diagram and all that very day from their solar expert, Richard. Being totally new to solar Richard had a lot of questions on his hands with us. He explained all the benefits of a quality roofing product and had an estimate the next morning. He explained the work schedule and when it could be done and how long it would take. Everything he said was exactly right and within the time frame he stated. When the work crew came out they were extremely friendly and polite. They were very honest about extra wood that needed to be replaced and showed me everything. They finished all the work within the time frame I was told. Just had our tile roof re-papered by Raneri & Long and are extremely pleased with all aspects of the job. The owner, Dave, kept us updated regarding when the job would be started and gave us his number to contact him whenever we needed..which is unheard of these days! (If you've made any calls recently regarding a roofing job, you'll find that they ALL have a backlog of jobs because of the crazy rains we had last year.) The guys that did the work showed up every day on time, they were hard working, polite and answered any and all questions that we had. During the beginning of our job, a freak HIGH wind storm hit our area and even though everything had been made secure, a piece of the paper that was exposed tore off. When I first selected Raneri almost ten years ago I felt very confident in choosing this company. They have been in business in the San Diego area for a very long time. Their quality work and ethics are impressive, Their office staff ( the front door to any business) are courteous and helpful. Fast forward almost ten years, they are still here, doing a fantastic job and deserve the best of reviews. Today they are on my roof doing some "touch up" work caused from winds and time!
