Had tag put a roof on our 4 unit townhouse approx. 11 years ago. Constant leaks over the years in every unit. They came out numerous times to repir leaks around our skylights and at one point placed 4 new drains on the roof which has only exacerbated the leak where a patch was placed over the new drain area of one unti which leaked profusely on our main bedroom causing black mold and about 8 thousand dollars in repairs. I am repostng my review from 1/16/24 for work done in December 2023 because it appears it has been deleted. We are very happy with our new roof installed by Tag Roofing. AJ and the tearoff team were terrific. They took great care to contain the mess, clean up the debris and they picked up the nails with a rolling magnet. They even used a blower inside the garage to remove debris. The roofing crew did a very nice job with the shingles and new vents. The flat part of the roof over the addition looks great. It was completed just before the rain in December and there have been no leaks. We did a roof and solar over a year ago with Tag Roofing and Solar. I ended up going with Tag and Karl's company after getting bids from 5 other companies. In the end I went with Tag for 2 main reasons. Reason one: Tag inspired the most confidence in terms of actually taking care of my roof. We have a steeper roof pitch than some and it is more complicated because it has a courtyard and a back patio cover that was newer and integrated into existing roof. Reason two: Tag was the most competitive when considering the whole job that encompassed Roof and Solar. The other companies were competitive on the solar but Tag beat them and I was more confident that they would nail the roof and they did. We had other roofing contractors come out and just leave because of the complexity of the job. With the Metal Roof, the Frame for the metal Roof, and the original cedar shingles all needing to be removed, this was a big job for a smaller residential home. In the end, Tag kept the yard cleaner than I anticipated and the guys working were polite, prompt, and careful. I have referred Tag to some of our friends and they have had positive experiences too. Lastly on solar, I told them that we just got a hot tub and we were getting an electric car. They recommended a 10KWh system knowing that i didn't want to add more solar later. Cons: initial lack of communication with start date and took while to start, stated job would take up to 2 weeks but took more than a month (we did have a lot of rain in between but this was not the sole reason for the delays as there were sunny days when no one came and no one told us why), no communication regarding status - only communicated when they wanted to get paid, when the job was "complete" and wanted payment they had not finished painting the fascia (had to come out two times to finish this , we notified them of excess dirt left from the installation but never received a response since they had already collected their money, seemed like different people working on or roof, gave us a quote to include thebtile cost but then charged for "extra" tiles bc more tiles were needed than they had thought, would not warranty their work of we got solar. read more

I contracted Tag Roofing and Solar to perform a lift and lay to replace the underlayment on my roof prior to installing a Tesla Solar System. They provided the most reasonable estimate for the job and performed spectacularly! Our job was pushed pack several times due to the unstable weather San Diego experienced in the spring time. However, with each instance Donna and the rest of her team kept us informed with each delay. Communication is very important to me. I did our due diligence and solicited multiple bids for our roof replacement. We also have solar electric and pool heating panels on our roof. After talking with them all, we chose TAG. Karl came out and made the best sense compared to the others, and their estimate was very competitive. We have 21 SunPower solar electric panels and thankfully TAG is a SunPower dealer. That was important to me because the fewer the vendors the better. TAG removed them perfectly, then reinstalled them after the new roof was installed, also perfectly. Mark Naylor removed and replaced the pool heating panels and, once again, perfectly. We had to delay the start date a bit because we were cashing in a CD to pay for all of this. TAG understood the issue and scheduled the roof after the CD was cashed. They were very accommodating with the timing. When the work started it was like watching a well-oiled machine at work. Every one of the workers, and the foreman, were extremely polite and pleasant, but they were here to work, and they did just that. We had our old roof removed down to the wood, and TAG took a difficult job and had it done in two days! They put plastic over our plants and shielded the pool from most debris. They were very neat and cleaned up thoroughly at the end of every day. The roofing materials were ordered correctly and delivered on time. The roofing crew was amazing. Like the other workers, they worked together in synchrony and as a team. In just a few more days, the roof was done and looked beautiful. One of the things that I saw was how well all the crews worked together. They seemed happy, carried on endless conversations (not stopping work to do so) and frequently offered to help each other. That is a direct reflection on how well the company is managed. Happy workers make for great jobs and they did not disappoint. I waited a while to write this review until we had some Santa Ana heat with low humidity, and then a few rainy days. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we had both in a relatively short period of time. We had no leaks at all and the rood functioned flawlessly. We are in our 70s and the roof, (Owens Corning) has a 50-year limited warranty. We feel confident now that we can pass along our house to our son, his wife, and son after we pass. Until then, we can live out our years in our house with peace of mind about our roof. Hired Tag roofing to remove and replace the cement roof tiles, adding new material beneath. Anthony was very friendly and professional and had a very clear contract sent via email, which we agreed to, and asked to be placed schedule. Christian (Chris), arrived at our house at the scheduled time and introduced himself. Chris was very courteous and professional as he surveyed the project. Work began immediately and was completed within a few days. Chris found some areas that were not properly done by the contractors who did the original roof, and fixed these at no additional charges. I am beyond upset with this company. Initially, we thought we made the right choice but we soon found out this was a big mistake. We got a quote from the owner and he was upfront that he was not the cheapest but not the most expensive and appreciated that transparency. He was a referral and we liked him when we met him, so we thought we would give him the business. We needed to repair the roof in its entirety, and the rain was coming so we signed. Full disclaimer - our fault for not getting more estimates... He said they could not do the work for a few weeks but he would put a tarp on our roof for free since we signed a contract - normally it would be $385. They came to put the tarp on but did not do it properly because our roof continued to leak inside our house. He said he could not send anyone back out until 2 days later. Not doing it right the first time was a red flag for me, and making us wait to get it fixed was another. The work was supposed to start the following week but we had not heard from anyone to confirm, so I reached out to the office to find out it was not going to start until the following week - 3rd red flag. I was irritated and surprised there was no communication around this from their side. Really? I had to call them to find this out? At this point, I started getting nervous so we started getting other bids. We got more referrals and found someone we really wanted to work with and he was $6000.00 less expensive with very good reviews. We called the owner and told him we wanted to go with another company - we were not very happy with the customer service or lack there of. At that time he told us he was getting ready to start our job (this was news to us) and we were under contract (which was true) and he would need to talk to his attorney. He also said we would have to pay for the $500 tarp which he initially told us was $385 (you will see later in this review why this is an important thing I am calling out) He now is going to call his attorney. Seriously? Okay...he called us back and told us he would knock off $3000. Even though that was still $3000 higher than the other bid, we didn't want to make waves and we were under contract and wanted to do the right thing, so we agreed. At this point, I thought things would go fine. Yes, we were paying more, but we were under contract so it was our lessen to learn - move on. That was until we received the final bill. Karl ended up charging us for 400 broken tile replacements at $9 a piece. Now, we knew we would have to pay for SOME broken tiles (100-150) but 400 was another $3000. What are the chances that this was almost the exact amount that he "discounted" us. I asked for proof of this - I would assume there would be an invoice, before and after pictures, SOMETHING. The fact was, he could not produce anything. Because of the fear of a mechanic lien, we had no choice other than to pay it. The other very disturbing thing about this is that there was not ONE conversation, phone call, email, or text with us during this 2 week plus project about the number of broken tiles. I would NEVER hit my customer with a $3000 surcharge without having a conversation with them SOMEWHERE along the way. That is sticker shock, bait and switch, etc.. Things were never what he said they were going to be. The $385 tarp that was not put on correctly was now $500. There was an additional $3000+ on our final bill for 400 tiles that he could produce no proof or invoice on and never bothered to communicate about during the project. They did not start on time and never communicated that they wouldn't. Our solar was not connected properly upon completion of the job and he blamed that on us not being home which was another lie because we were home during the entire project. I should also mention that initially he almost sold us into a new roof instead of a full roof relay - he sold it as a lifetime warranty. We almost did that until I read the fine print and saw it was a standard 10 year warranty - when I asked him about it he said it was the tile that was lifetime. I should have known at that time things might be shady. That is a huge red flag. The only reason they aren't getting one star is because they finished the job and the crew was nice. Hopefully the roof holds up and Tag honors the warranty if it doesn't. Do yourself a favor and read the fine print and shop around before you consider this company. There will be charges you couldn't imagine and there will be no conversation ahead of time. Before writing this review, we gave the owner a chance to make things right. We told him a $3000 surprise without a mid-project conversation or status update, and / or no pictures, invoices or proof isn't ethical and asked him to do the right thing and honor the original price. We offered to split the additional tile charge which we believed was more than fair ($1500) . He would not come down on his price. We let him know this review was coming. read more

I hired TAG about 2 years ago to re-roof the garage. The photos speak for themselves. I was surprised they didn't lay the ridges in the direction the water flows. NOW IT PONDS because Tom told the workers to lay it in the wrong direction! It goes from side to side and not toward the drains! Probably would not recommend Tom and Karl although this could be a one time problem? Can't redo the roofing material or I would have to pay another $8,500. I gave them a 1 because Karl and Tom never submitted my warranty! (Please be sure that they send in the warranty by calling the number below. Better yet, send it in yourself.) By the way, the tree has nothing to do with the ponding. It is caused by faulty installation where the water can't flow toward the drains! Tom (estimator) is nice guy to talk to, but flaky in making and following up with appointments and added a lot of additional tasks that may not be necessary. Initial estimate was high, so asked for a re-quote to remove some unnecessary tasks, and though agreed to re-quote, we got no follow up from Tom or the company. Tag Roofing is just wrapping up re-roofing our 50 year old house that has a challenging 7.5/12 pitch. Karl was very prompt and efficient with the bid and getting back with me on any questions and concerns. He would come out if needed, so there was never a point when I felt they were not very responsive. They outbid most of the other roofing companies and added a few gems to the deal to make it completely worth looking into their free estimate of work. The workers are very skilled and clean. Sure- it's a complete mess when you have to pull two layers of old shingles with paper and replace damaged wood, but they have a great cleaning crew to recover the nails and blow out the never-ending shingle grit. Overall, Tag Roofing did an awesome job, finished in the time he estimated and at the price he quoted. This is the second house I've had to re-roof, so I'm aware of some of the challenges with getting quality work. Very happy with their work. read more

Be careful of what you sign and if you sign with Tag, plan on getting a lawyer. We contracted with them last July 2019 to put on a new roof, fix and waterproof a deck with a Dex-o-Tex system, and install solar panels by November 1st 2019. We got a lawyer involved when they weren't done by January 2020. Now a year later, we still don't have everything we contracted for and will be out thousands of dollars to fix much of what they've done. Even they've admitted to our lawyer that their workmanship is shoddy. Since we started with Tag, two of my neighbors have gotten other contractors for their roofs and I envy them. We paid about the same, but they have gorgeous 50-year roofs that were finished in days. We have a lumpy roof with globs of mastic, which is only guaranteed for 25-years on the tile. Tag is the definition of bait and switch. When we first met, Karl said that we'd have a 50-year roof when he was done, but used a lower grade version of the tile that we'd discussed. Even worse, he flat out lied about our Dex-o-Tex system. He claimed that he was installing Dex-o-Tex, but didn't. I haven't told you about the damage done and the mess when they took off the old roof. My neighbor let me know it even filled his yard. I didn't let you know about the toxic waste of glue and paint they poured in my garden, or about the resin pots and things they took, or about the lack of licenses and questionable paperwork with the city and SDG&E. I could list dozens of issues that have occurred over the past year, but the main point is that I consider it my civic duty to warn you against using this company. read more

We recently met w/ Karl G. at a commercial building. Our original appointment was for the following week but we were both in same area so it worked out well. He was there to give an assessment of the roof condition. I know enough about commercial buildings to know the general life span of certain types of roofs, etc. So I've already heard everyone's pitch on this particular roof. Most big roofing companies won't even come out to look at a building unless they know owner will consider replacing (NOT repairing) the roof. Few key things about Tag: - Karl was knowledgeable and quick - He got up there and gave me a better assessment than the previous guy (well, previous guy was more or less a handyman/expired licensed roofer). The previous guy failed to mention that the HVAC system (which had been jacked and mostly stripped of wires), was the main reason for the roof leaks - sense of humor. I always try to present the best options and scenarios. It's nice to have a professional roofer who can understand my sarcasm and not take it personally - his honesty. He looked at roof and said 'as much as I'd like to on a new roof, I can't - it honestly has a few years left it. We can do maintenance/repairs'. I knew this already, from previous assessments, but what I appreciated was that I didn't have to sell him on what i already knew. I didn't have to say 'ok, fine, yeah, I *KNOW* a new roof would be great BUT just tell me the repair options b/c it still has life in it' - Lastly, his keen sense of safety. Vacant buildings are being targeted for the copper wires, etc etc. This building unfortunately had been stripped, almost entirely , of most of it's wires. There happened to be a big Uhaul type truck suspiciously parked in back. At the end of meeting, Karl explained to me a few keys things how thieves worked. He got quiet and then quickly said 'you know, that truck in the back, is that yours? If not, I wouldn't be surprised if all the stolen stuff is in there right now'. Greatttt. Yeah. *I' will go to the back and ask the creepy driver in truck why he's there. That's what i was thinking. But jeez, Karl didn't miss a beat and said 'you want me to go back there and check it out w/ you'. And sure as heck, he walked back there w/ me and asked the 2 automobiles in question why they were there. Karl. Never had a roofing hero before. His estimate was free. His presence...priceless. I learned a few things that day and usually , a tough no-nonense chick like me would feel 'yeah i can take care of anything', felt grateful that he was there. He said he'd get an estimate to me by tomorrow. It's not my decision to decide on the roofer unfortunately in this case - but I will, without a doubt, hire him for a future job and/or refer him to other ppl. read more

We had Tag replace our 30 year old roof although it wasn't leaking, but we wanted to put in solar and it seemed smart to replace the roof first. We had between 3-5 layers of shingles so it wasn't an easy job. There were some minor hiccups but they were rights on it. Since we were doing a skylight installation and solar with the new roof, we wanted one company to call, if we had trouble. I'm so pleased with the quality of work and their professionalism. We just finished having our main roof replaced by TAG Roofing , a local company not a chain, and are very pleased with job and service. We used them because we had used them before to reroof the flat roof over our enclosed patio. They were the only ones that did not try to upsell us on a whole roof replacement despite the fact that the main roof was still fairly new. They did our flat roof well and when we had a leak last year , after several years , they checked and found it was still just within the warranty and fixed it. Office staff are friendly and responsive ,however, sometimes there have been minor misunderstandings which have always been resolved to our satisfaction. Price wise they aren't cheap but are competitive. The roofing job was well done and they replaced our old wind turbine attic vents with state of the art Fire ember resistant vents. The sky light, and other vent pipes etc were painted match the shingles. Our roof looks great and we feel more secure for the winter rains. We definitely recommend TAG and enjoyed working with Karl . They ARE NOT licensed solar installers. Simple Google "Check a California Contractor License", go to the California Contractor's License Board webpage, and enter Tag's license #557970 or "Tag Construction" to verify this. I learned this the hard way after Tag put a new roof on my home in Match 2019. They cut corners and mishandled the job from day one, and the roof leaked bad 3 weeks later. I had Tag to replace some of the fascia boards and repair a portion of my roof. It was the worst experience. It started with them painting the 2x10 boards and piling them on top of each other while wet. I had to sand many of these boards and repaint all of them before they could be put up. Then they had screws that didn't connect to the support boards. They were just screwed through the fascia boards. Then there were all the paint footprints left and the denting of my garage door. From the roof repair they spilled the black substance used for roofing. The solution they said would take it out actually made the trek boards disintegrate. So they ruined my whole balcony. When I look out I see discolored trek decking. Lastly the mortar work they did was beyond messy. They left a hammer on my roof along with broken tile. At the end I wouldn't even let them back on my property. I was really shocked that Tom was the owner of the company. There wasn't anyone on site to make sure quality work was being done. I had to inspect the work and then report it to Tom. I hope this will keep you from making the mistake I made. read more

I called Tag for a quote for a roofing replacement. They weren't able to schedule me for a consultation until weeks later. Red Flag #1. Finally, when the day came, no one showed up during the time frame they provided. I received no call from them. I called their # and they said that due to rain, the person didn't feel safe climbing up on the roof (note, none of the other companies I spoke to needed to climb on the roof to provide me a quote). I'm not sure why they couldnt have emailed, texted, or called to let me know this in advance (it rained the whole day)...simply unprofessional to stand up a potential customer. Red Flag #2. Then, when the guy showed up (again, he was late with no communication of such), he wasn't wearing mask. Red Flag #3. I already knew this wasn't going to work out, but wanted to give them a chance. That is, until I told him that my solar panel company would only allow authorized companies to remove/reinstall the panels for warranty purposes. He said Tag would not be willing to work with the other company to coordinate solar panel and roof removal/reinstall. Red Flag #4. I have to say their sales personal are very knowledgeable but misleading A lot information to make me sign the contract. late on, they use different reasons to change the contact and I not able to read everything due to my working schedule (I work in Navy and get underway a lot during that time). Tag is Reliable, Reasonable and Rapid Tag has done a superb job on my house. Originally I found out about them via a coupon / flyer for 15% off dropped by Karl Godenschwager at my door. Karl is the VP of Tag and is my neighbor. Eventually when I needed them, I called them to inspect and repair leaks on my roof. After a termite extermination tenting, I needed a number of woods around the roof to be replaced, parts of roof to be repaired and some tiles to be replaced. What I liked about their work was the way that Karl is so detail oriented and the way he uses top material and does top notch job. Tag used 2 sheets of paper (unlike many others who use 1 sheet), then felt layer and then tiles on the top. They used metal lining on the sides of the roof, fine wood on the roof sides of the house with metal covering the woods. If the original builder had used these metal coverings, then the woods would have never been infested with termites and rotted by rain! So they repaired all the leaks, all the termite infested woods replaced and some wood rods on the roof which were rotted were replaced. Tag purchased top quality tiles and material for the roof and top quality wood for sides of the roof. On top of the 15% off the price, they ended up spending more than it was estimated on material (tiles and wood) but Karl did not charge me for the few hundred dollars more on the material. They gave me a reasonable price and much discount. A few thousand dollars does not matter when you can have a peace of mind knowing that your contractor is Karl who uses top notch material so he does not have to come back in a few years to redo the job! Karl does it right the first time. Tag done a superb job, they were reliable, responsible, reasonable in price and surely rapid. They got this big job done in 3 days. In just 3 days they were out of here practically replacing half of my large size estate's roof and neatly cleaned after themselves not breaking anything. Karl supervised all throughout the job making sure the guys have done a tidy job and a clean job. Tag Construction and Roofing will most likely be back in my house for future projects. Had a leak. One guy came for the estimate and didn't even climb on the roof to diagnose the problem. Gave me a quote based on what, I had no clue. Karl came, was sensitive enough to take off his shoes and donned those booties. Climbed up on my roof and gave me a thorough report of what was wrong with my roof. So, I decided to use Tag Construction. My roof was done in a single day and no leak so far. Knock on wood. The reason for the 3 stars...it is actually 3.5 stars but I can't really round up. Reaching Karl was a bit difficult. I really had to keep on calling him. I would let a day or two go by before calling him again but the accessibility with this business could improve. He said he lost his book once or twice and then something about his sister or her kid and that he had to babysit. Fine, you have a life but please call me and let me know you can't attend to my roof need for a few days. Keep me in the loop so I don't have to keep calling you, I have my life too. Karl needs a secretary or better organizational skills. But the man is personable when you are able to talk to him. Would I use him again? Hmmmm.... I would say yes, the roof was done right so I would deal with the frustrations again. read more

I come from a family of contractors, and with that background I highly recommend Karl and TAG Roofing. If you want to know why, read my story. In the world of contracting, construction, and roofing, it is far more important to get a honest, quality contractor than to save a few bucks. What you will find is, if you try to save a few bucks by choosing cheap labor to do your repairs, you'll pay much more in the long run. My story is short. I am purchasing a house with a new roof (currently in escrow). The "new roof" looks like it was put on by third graders. Our general inspector noticed a lot of problems on the roof, and since the roof was a selling point on the home, I contacted the sellers to repair it. The sellers agreed to fix the roof, but hired the same guy who put the roof on to come out and "fix it." What you have here is a failure of logic. If someone does the job wrong the first time, they are either dishonest, incompetent, or lazy. Bringing back bad workers to fix their own problem is like punching yourself in the face to fix a broken nose. Anyway, I called Karl and he came out that same day to check the roof repairs. He was able to verify that almost all the repairs were completed. And, although the roof is really ugly, it would do the job. He explained to me all the points of repair I had questions about as he walked on the roof. The only thing thing still missing from the roof was some mastic on exposed nails, which was something we asked the seller to have corrected. Karl could tell I was really annoyed, grabbed some gear from his truck, and corrected the roof problems right then and there. When I tried to pay him for his work he only gave me a smile and a handshake and said, "Congratulations on your new house." Now that is a good contractor: someone that knows what they are doing, has respect for his community, and won't stick you when you're down. The roof has a 20 year "warranty" from the third graders that put it on, but you better believe I'm calling TAG when I need to have any work done. Thank you Karl! read more
