This place sounds like a deal but it is NOT. Let me explain.....Came over to fix my rear brakes, rotors and ac due to vinegar smell. Quoted too good, and nice compared with other shops. So decided to use this business. Performed the repair work and guess what.... now the AC vents made a buzzing noise afterwards repairing at this place. During inspection of the vehicle, the owner said that the engine mount needed to be replaced and the belt serpentine needed to be replaced. I went ahead and did it and the total cost for everything was like over $1340. The top engine mount was bad and I know it but the owner said that it the bottom engine mount and the serpentine belt was recommended also to be replaced so I did it anyways. Let me tell you something......Bottom engine mount .......IT WAS NOT NECESSARY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND YOU KNOW IT JAY!!!!! The bottom engine mount looked fine when he showed it to me when I went to pick up the car. After the installation of the engine mount and serpentine belt, my car sounded horribly bad underneath the front hood clinking and the AC began to have ratting sound when the ac knob is adjusted on middle fan modes. The vinaigrette smell was there too but better than before. So I took it back and owner check it out again and said that probably something fell into the AC vent area. It never sounded like that on the vent area before the repair. The engine area also created more unusual noise and he said it was probably the shocks and said was another 800 plus some other parts. Felt that there was a disconnection between customer and the business and he wanted to get rid of me after paying him $1340 I felt being a sucker. So I decided to take it to another AC shop specialist to see what is going on with the AC blower motor area. The new shop checked the area of the glove box area where the blower motor is hidden and each mentions that the screw bolts were LOOSE also there were a MISSING triangular piece in there that either they broke it or forgot to install it back. I cannot imagine what else they forgot to put back, tighten, or what else they broke. The AC Specialist also said that they probably left some paper and fell into the blower motor area. It will cost another $1000 because of their mistake since they need to remove the area and find where they dropped that piece of paper. Absolutely a waste of time and money. Now I have MORE than ever clunking underneath the front hood noise and bussing annoying AC noise. Not recommending this place, and I will NEVER be back, and be extremely cautious if you decide to bring your vehicles here. Jay you should be accountable for your company's work and not brushed it off like if it was not your problem. *****AFTER SERVICE, THE CAR DRIVES LIKE A BOAT AND VERY BOUNCY NOW...*****Car now tend to pull to the left during driving *****Steering wheel now shakes****Engine pulls during braking****MY ROTORS and REAR CALIPERS LOOKED REALLY OLD ........NEVER LOOKED SO OLD BEFORE THE WORK.....EXTREMELY DISHONEST, NO CUSTOMER WARRANTY, AND SUPER DISAPPOINTING!!!! They took out 4 of my front radiator support expansion plug removed and never installed it back when they cleaned my radiator. Has to go to Volvo dealership and buy 4 clips which cost around $18.00. I had my power steering fluid filled a week before taking to Rankin's, but after taking it to Rankin's repair I had to go to Oreily to buy power steering fluid cause they removed it and it was below the low limit. Serpentine belt area also creates sound when starting the car. My car was not happy after their work. No wonder my car sterring was loud and vibrating after their repair. It is an absolute nightmare no attention to details and sloppy work. Yes the owner said I DON'T HEAR OR SEE anything wrong with the car when you bring the car back to recheck their work. I have no idea why that other person did not have a good experience at Rankins, but my family has been going there for about 30 years now. We have bought 3 cars there and take our cars there all the time. They are not cheapest mechanics out there, but they know what they are doing and they do not overcharge their clients. It's good, quality, trustworthy mechanic work. We do not live close by anymore and still drive the 25 minutes to go to them if we need work done on our cars. Took the car for inspection waited 10mins for someone to approach me while they walk passed me 10 times. After the inspection they said everything is good just needs timing belt $2300 lol inhad the timing belt replaced at another volvo shop for $550. and i had driven approximately 25k after that so for a fact i know it doesnt need to be replaced. After i pickup my car i saw a scratch on my door and grease on my door pannel. Bottom line this placed is really bad they are just money hungry! I called to get a quote on installing a new instrument cluster on my '98 V70 wagon. The person I spoke with said it wasn't possible. I had already received quotes from other volvo repair shops about the cluster replacement but this place was close to my house. Then I called classic car of Sweden up the road. This shop deserves a good review, and as a young female I'm always skeptical for what stories I will get from mechanics. I brought my Volvo here twice. First time to replace lock cylinder I got a low quote over the phone which is more than any shop that just wanted me to "bring it in." Once the car was done, The end price was actually cheaper because he managed to get a cheaper price for the part. That right there honestly created trust and I knew I'd bring my car there again. Second time I had problems, I towed it into the shop and my car was a goner. The Mechanic (Wish I knew his name, head honcho there) Checked it out for free, and told me what many things were wrong, and the price it would run me up and that it was way above resell value and not even worth it. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GOING TO THIS SHOP: I have been bringing my cars here for over 15 years. For the most part it has been pretty good. Jay took over for his dad some years ago and the personal touch went away. He is at times very abrasive, rude and rarely explains what needs to be done to our cars. Here is were we have a very serious problem - One year ago, Jay had a used Volvo he was selling that my daughter was interested in buying. This is a 20 year girl who saved her money for a car. Jay showed us a long list of things he went through and told us it was a VERY GOOD CAR. We have always trusted him, so we bought it. Since buying the car, we have taken it to him always for regular service. Last week a warning light came on and we took it to Rankin. Jay immediately told us it needed a new transmission and would cost $2,000. Didn't offer to help in the cost in any way since he sold us the car and have been servicing four cars there for 15+ years. So we took it to Aamco for another opinion. After being totally upfront about ALL costs, they opened it up and found the transmission case was cracked. Jay never even noticed this. Now the repair will be $3,700, but will have a three year warranty vs THREE MONTH FROM RANKIN...REALLY! We called Rankin and told jay we went to Aamco and what the cost is. Asked if he would be willing to help in cost. He got angry and said he takes no responsibility in the car and that, "thats the way it is". We reminded him that we have been bringing cars for engines, service all for years and asked again. HE THEN SAID, "DON'T CALL ME EVER AGAIN". We have never had one disagreement with him till now. He has been rude, but nothing like this. Very unfortunate. If you choose to take your car to him, be prepared for rudeness. He will do the work, but VERY slowly and he will not explain. A difficult guy for sure. People have a lot of choices these days. Why give your hard earned money to a person like this?? Not me...ever again. read more

A good mechanic is hard to find, especially as a woman in a new city. Two years ago I found Rankin's on yelp, and I couldn't be happier with the service since. He is always honest about the price. If he gives you an estimate on a repair, and then finds parts for less, he'll take those and charge you less! Best of all he never makes me feel like an idiot when I bring my car in with an issue. Sadly it's time for a car upgrade, and it's unlikely I'll be able to afford a used Volvo to replace my old V70. Told them I needed a motor mount for my car and waited for them to tell me to be ready to take out financial aid, but low and behold, they only charged me a finger! Can't believe they fixed my car for half of what other dealers told me! And fast! He even told me other things I needed to do my car, for free, and changed my bulbs on my car. For free. I love Rankin's. The prices can't be beat and I've been going to them for over 8 years with both my volov's. I currently have an XC-90 and they take very good care of it. I took my Volvo here many times and the work seemed good but my last experience was CRAZY and uncalled for. I went for a routine service for the car and when I returned to pick up the car I was told it needed one repair and my dipstick was broken. I asked how much the repair would cost and I was told that my business was no longer welcome there since I got the last set of repairs (which he said were done well) done elsewhere and they at Rankins have bills to pay.. I'm not even making this up. The reason we went elsewhere last time is bc the other shop quoted and charged us hundreds of dollars less then Rankins. You see, we have bill to pay as well. So his answer to business being slow is to turn away business? Okay, all that's fine and I wouldn't even be writing this except for the fact that they snapped my dipstick! Out of spite probably. I checked my oil that morning and the dipstick was fine and dandy and when I got the car back the handle was snapped off, hence, the one star because that is nuts. I just pray that they didn't sabotage anything else that could result in much worse. The only reason I ever even went to another shop is because a while back I needed a headlight changed. It's not an easy thing on my car or I would do it myself. Rankins said they needed to take off the front bumper to do it and it would cost like $70. Pep Boys did it for $10 and most certainly did not take off the bumper. It's hard to know who to trust. If one mechanic says a bulb change is going to be a big deal and another one actually does the change in a few minutes and charges $10, it's suspicious. We can take our car wherever we want to and they can refuse service to whomever they want to but don't go breaking up people's car parts because you're mad about the competition. read more

Shockingly, they gave us a bill of $2,400!! They took it upon themselves to fix OTHER things on the car. This is highly unprofessional. GREAT PEOPLE! I live in Oregon, and I found a Volvo online, and was very interested in purchasing it. The dealer gave me the creeps with stipulations for having the car inspected. "The car cannot be inspected at a dealer, or anyplace that sells cars, it can only be a mechanical inspection, and it has to be within 2 miles." RED FLAGS BIG TIME! But the car looked good in pictures. I found Rankin's online read the reviews and called Jay up. I explained the situation, he said he would be happy to inspect the car for me, and gave me a solid, reasonable figure on the cost of the inspection. Jay refused my credit card at that point and said if the card wasn't worth inspecting he wouldn't charge me. That impressed me, my feeling was that if he was after my money, he would have asked for the card upfront which he didn't. Short story long, he did a very detailed inspection, and spent quite a bit of time going over everything he found. His price was just as he quoted, and based on his inspection, the car is still for sale! If honesty and integrity are important to you, you can't go wrong with Jay and his business. I had several problems with my stepsons 740 and I have to say that he resolved them and made good on services performed including a smog issue that he resolved personally, while he had an infected hand.
