Was told by this company that an estimate was "required" to give me an estimate for maintenance on a new Weil Mclain Aqua Balance Combi boiler and was precharged 136 dollars for the visit. This is a 18 month old boiler. in researching the maintenance kit from Weil Mclain for the boiler is about 150 dollars. I was quoted 1838 dollars for the maintenance When looking at the facts on time and material I find the following: Maintenance Kit Cost: Genuine Weil-McLain AquaBalance Annual Maintenance Kits (typically containing gaskets, an ignitor, and a flame sensor) are widely available online for $147.00 to $257.00. Labor Time: The manufacturer advises that a complete preventative maintenance procedure should take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Even if charging 200 dollars and hour and a premium kit price ($250), a fair total would be approximately $650 to $750. The quote of $1,838 is nearly triple the high-end estimate. Precharging 125 dollar up front , plus fees and taxes bringing it to over 135 dollars and stating it is required and never having even recieved what the possible fees they charges are is unscrupulous when they are charging over 3X the national average, and when i called for a refund on the estimate stating this i was outright refused. We contacted Ranshaw after seeing their strong reviews and hoped for a good experience. Our call was regarding a drip and a knocking sound coming from one of our radiators. After the issue was diagnosed, we were told the radiator valve needed to be replaced. The technicians, Albert and Michael, were polite and professional. My wife asked for an estimate, and Albert mentioned he needed to step out to his truck to prepare it. When he returned a few minutes later, we were quoted $746 for the valve replacement. We were also charged a $125 service fee, which would be deducted only if we proceeded with the repair. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the quote. The price was over three times higher than other estimates we received for the exact same work. Paying the $125 service fee and being expected to spend over $600 more for a simple valve replacement felt unreasonable and left us dissatisfied overall. OVERPRICED!!!! read more

Most of the time the techs that arrive do their work in a professional and competent fashion. Work is done right the first time. No need for a return visit. Stay away!!!!!!! If you want to have functional ac in your home. We did new construction - they installed our boiler, hot water tank (which we also had issues with) Basically because of their poor work - my ac in my main bedroom makes such a noise due to where it was placed- when we questioned them about this they continued to say this is the correct way. They installed weak units that cannot handle the size of our home. We had to install additional internal ac units. Now we have issues with the condensers - we are fixing them w/out this company ... I called Ranshaw for a repair to my boiler. Once there, the tech could not identify the problem so the visit took two days. After still not identifying the problem and complaining about hourly wages, I suggested that, the comparison of changing the entire burner would be cheaper. I paid the tech for his unsuccessful visits an had the burner changed myself. No hard feelings they couldn't identify the problem and I still paid them. A couple of years later, I called them again and paid their service fee for a different issue on the same boiler they refused to come out and provide service because of their previous unsuccessful visit. This company is sad, I don't know what their issue is but they should have more respect for their customers and their quality of work especially if they are expecting to get paid. Five stars! Go Ranshaw Plumbing! My home had a huge increase in water bills in the past year. For almost 40 years the yearly bill rarely was more than $500 dollars. The bill last month was over $800 dollars, the one before that over $400 dollars. If the problem was a water leak from the main water line a new copper pipe might have to be installed above the tiled floors, the new pipe going from the main line in the front of the basement to the boiler at the back of the basement. As my adult kids helped move stuff out of the way to prepare for that costly repair, I checked the basement's bathroom that hasn't been used in many years. Though the water valves to the toilet bowl tank & the sink's hot & cold water were all turned off there was a steady flow of water into the toilet bowl's tank- the stopper was defective - & very small leaks from the sink's 2 water valves. Ranshaw, by Jennifer who spoke with me, was, as usual, able to send someone very quickly when I called this morning. I had the pleasure of meeting & being educated about the matter by 2 lovely, bright & personable young men, Albert & Anthony. Very dissatisfied with the service or the lack of service from Ranshaw.I purchased a Gas Service Maintenance Plan and scheduled a boiler tune-up/ cleaning. the tech came out, gave me a list of items that needed to be corrected before he can do anything, and billed me for the visit. So I am out $589.00 and still, no tune-up done. I inquired about it with their office but never got a reply, but I did notification for the billed no service visit which I thought would be covered in the "PLAN". I would have given zero stars if it were an option. I took advantage of the discount rate for tuning up a boiler. When techs left, condensation started to form in the pressure gauge. They came to the house to service the boiler and water heater. The person cleaned out the boiler, scrubbed all the pipes down, changed the washers, re-sealed everything, vacuumed all the crevices, and wiped everything down. Even tagged/labeled all the pipes. I thought he did a thorough job and would recommend this company to others. He didn't clean everything would a fine tooth comb (as expected) but I thought he was thorough enough. I asked a lot of questions and he was very patient in explaining everything to me. That was very important to me. They came the same day I called them since my heater broke and was able to save me and my family from a very cold night. They are super clean and fast and were able to fix my heater. So these folks show up to my house unannounced in the summer time when my tank is 75% full and full up the remaining 25% and then demand that we pay them right then and there. What are you doing, I didn't need or ask for extra oil. We had plenty at that time and didn't ask or approve of this unwanted and unwarranted delivery. I'm sorry but this is an unscrupulous business practice. Show up unannounced, force things on our household we never asked for then demand payment. This is some kind of racket they're running here. When you go out to eat they ask you if you'd like a refill. They don't just bring you a new bottle of wine when the one you already ordered is still half full then add the second unsolicited bottle to the bill then get up on a high horse and yell and scream at you demanding payment for a bottle you never asked for. For many years, Ranshaw Plumbing has been the plumbing company my wife and I have employed for our home needs. In all those years, Ranshaw has always provided fast & reliable service. From the pleasant ladies, Joann & Valarie, who - among other duties, I'm sure - answer my phone calls, to the employees who fix - and they always do! - our plumbing problems, it's always been a pleasure to work with them. Today, another sewer backup was in evidence. Joann put me as near to the top of the emergency list as she could. When I called an hour later for an estimated arrival time of the plumber, Valarie said I was the next stop. When Shannon the plumber - a lovely young man - appeared, he located the blockage at the main sewer line and snaked the line. I recommend, highly & without reservation, Ranshaw Plumbing for your plumbing needs. Plus, they have a yearly contract that provides, among other things, an annual boiler inspection in the Fall before the heat is turned on for the winter. I am giving company zero stars. First of all Mister Bill came into our house and started pointing and saying "This is illegal." Startled by his false statement it was clear he didn't have any customer service skills and no knowledge of boilers at least the classic ones. He told us the heat needed to be turned off and our boiler cleaned (cleaning was a service he did not provide). Mister Bill proceeded to turn off our hot water heater instead of the boiler. He blamed his error on an obstruction that could have been easily moved. Then he claimed to have vast knowledge of boilers. The mere the fact that he could not turn off the appropriate gas line made us believe he was all talk. He then stated he would gladly come and test our boiler after it was cleaned. This would require an additional charge. He marched out of our house and left us with no heat but a phone number for a chimney cleaning company. The chimney cleaning company were just as helpful, no one could come and a senior citizen was left without any heat. read more

I have been with Ranshaw fro almost 4 years and during that time they were very attentive and provided excellent service. The guy named Ray is the one that does the annual tune up and clean up in my house and he is very good. As far as the prices go if you need to replace something it gets very pricey but all of the companies are vey similar so you need to learn the basics yourself or sign up for a better annual plan that covers most of the parts if your heating unit is a little older. read more

I called on a Monday (11 February 2019) to ask about oil to natural gas conversion in my home in the Bronx. I spoke at length with Richie...I had done a lot of research and knew what I wanted...and it was wonderful to speak to someone who was more knowledgeable than me! He answered all my questions, and I felt gave me honest opinions..."if this were my home, this is what I would do." He did not give me a hard sell to buy specific equipment, his company's service...he laid out the different options and the strengths/problems with either choice (stay with oil and upgrade to a more efficient oil burner/boiler) or switch to natural gas and be prepared for delays in permitting and inspecting (up to three weeks with gas in the home). I felt enlightened and in a better place to make an educated choice after speaking with Richie. Every company, whether they are in oil or investments or whatever, should have someone as knowledgeable, honest and who is most concerned with me the consumer - rather than trying to land a big sale. Yes sales are important - and we all want that for our own businesses - but in the long run, honesty and listening to the needs/situation of the homeowner will reward a company more.
