Amazing place for a cute date night! The quality of fish is very fresh and you can tell the sushi chefs take a lot of time to make sure every dish comes out looking its best. My boyfriend and I ordered the Kaisen Don, hand roll samplers, and the omakase nigiri. The food did take a while to come out and I did notice the couple next to us who ordered after received their food first, but they did just order rolls. So I was expecting a longer wait for our order but it was definitely worth it. They are a very busy restaurant so even though we did have to wait they made sure to keep checking up on us to see if we needed anything. Our favorite was definitely the Kaisen Don. Pro tip, order a side of nori sheets to make your own specialized hand rolls, and they turn out perfect with the soft fish and rice against the crunchy seaweed. I would say they have some of the best fish quality in all of Santa Clara.
I love Rantei! I've eaten here in person a few times and gotten takeout a few times as well. The fish is very fresh and great quality. I think the portions are a little small so order a little extra food. We have tried many of their nigiri and sushi. In person they are very quick to prepare the food and bring it to you. For takeout, the food will last well in the containers. I recommend coming early (before 6) because it can get a little crowded. They have an online waitlist so make use of that - you can sign in at the restaurant. Parking can be a little hard sometimes in this area so if it's a busy night just park in the neighborhood and walk.
Food was great and fresh but I felt it was overpriced, plus the service was super slow (maybe since it became so popular!) Our group ordered mostly sushi items and one person ordered a hot dish, but the hot dish took an extra hour to arrive and so everyone else finished eating by the time he got his food
My first time at Rantei and everything was so good! It was pretty packed on a Friday night but my sister and I went on a walk until our table was ready so that was nice. What we ordered: Kaisen Don ~ comes with an assorted fish which included uni, hotate, blue fin toro, Kani and kura over rice. I rate it 5/5, it was super flavorful. Hand rolls: I can't remember the ones we got but I think there was so much packed in there that I didn't enjoy it! Fish taco: 2/5, I think it was the same as the hand rolls, just too much on top of it, the pico. Rantei roll: 5/5, so flavorful, I loved it! Lion long: Classico, 5/5! The staff: Everyone was so kind and always checked in on us! Great service, definitely will be returning!
Baby friendly and high chair available. Staff over July 4th weekend was great and accommodating. The beef skewer yakitori was the best I have ever had, perfectly cooked with juicy tenderness. I also loved the fresh Omakase sushi and the sake uni oyake don. Every bite was so good with perfect uni and rice. Parking was easy in a large parking lot and side street parking is plentiful.

We were served by Alan and his team: Henry and Christine. Service was one of the best I've had in the Bay Area. He went above and beyond. Our meal was nothing short of perfect. Every dish came out quickly and we didn't leave a bite behind.
This place is so yummy! Ordered some rolls, sashimi and yakitori. We booked a private room ( 6 people, price minimum, gratuity included ) . The room was so nice and it's nice to take your shoes off! Food was delicious and prices seem reasonable. The only thing was that service seemed slow ( not sure if it was just the day). My faves were the salmon crunchy and volcano. Would recommend for a delicious sushi spot!
We got the sushi omakase (this is nigiri) and the sashimi omakase, and I think it was good - but certainly not great value. It's strange that, if you prefer nigiri over sashimi and want the rice - the sushi omakase option is significantly less food than the samshimi omakase option. The portions were not particularly generous, and the chosen fish did not exactly feel premium. I think the only standout was the tuna belly. It is also a little upsetting that the staff does not tell you what fish the chef has chosen for omakase. So, if you did like a fish, you wouldn't really know what was what. However, it is a nice spot so the ambiance earns it some points.
Tucked inside a small strip mall, this Japanese restaurant is such a gem. Street parking is usually easy, service is quick, and the food always hits the spot. Their sashimi is super fresh, and the rolls are consistently delicious -- the Rantei Roll and Mango Spider Roll are our favorites. We also love their Katsu Chicken Curry, which comes with a crisp salad topped with creamy dressing and a comforting bowl of miso soup. Simple, satisfying, and always worth the visit.
Food: A few things fell short for me. They don't offer draft beer, and the beer glass wasn't chilled. The ankimo was on the salty side, soaked in soy sauce and the portion felt small for the price. The fried oysters were also quite small and mostly batter. Another disappointment was the omakase experience--it was served all at once rather than piece by piece, which took away from the traditional experience for me. I probably wouldn't order the omakase again. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the appetizers. The sushi and sashimi, however, were a different story. It was my first time trying ruby fish, and I really enjoyed it--it was soft, buttery, and packed with umami. The engawa, kanpachi, and hamachi were all fresh. The uni was also fresh, making it one of the highlights of the meal. Ambience: The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing, with Japanese music playing in the background that adds nicely to the dining experience. Service: Service was excellent throughout the meal. The staff was attentive, refilling drinks without being asked and promptly clearing used napkins and plates. Small details like that made the experience feel polished and well cared for. Overall: While the appetizers were underwhelming, the quality and freshness of the fish, along with the attentive service, made the meal enjoyable. I'd return primarily for the sashimi and sushi selections, which were the clear standouts of the evening.

Can't believe I waited 3 years to come here . I've always had it bookmarked but didn't want to go in the beginning because of the absurd wait times . Flashback to a random Wednesday evening the Husbie asked me what I wanted to eat & of course it's sushi !! We had a table for 2 + baby . They sat us at the bar & we made it work . We ordered the soft shell crab appetizer , the Kaisen Don & the Omakase sashimi set . Soft shell crab : It was perfectly fried and it was super crunchy and fresh . The sauce was okay . I wish they had a better sauce but the crab tasted great . 4/5 Kaisen Don $63.95 : Uni , scallop, Blue Fin Toro, crab , Ikura over rice . Myyy gooddddd this was super divine . Everything literally tasted so fresh and the briney pops of ikura with the creamy uni , scallops were so good . The blue fin toro was like buttery silk !! This was a no brainer . 5/5 Omakase Sashimi special $63.95 : Chefs choice of special fish (16 pcs ) comes with a mini ikura don . This was definitely a must . All the fish tasted super fresh and a great value for everything that's in the box. A MUST . 5/5 Can't wait to come back and try other items on their menu !

The service is fast, and all the waiters are very nice and attentive! The omakase box has a nice variety of fish, and it got me hooked onto their amaebi sashimi. The Kaisen Don is also one of our favorites from their menu. The rice is seasoned amazingly, and all the toppings in the box are delicious. It's a decent amount of food, but it feels light and refreshing. Would definitely recommend trying the Kaisen Don! The atmosphere of the restaurant is lively, and the wait is minimal most of the time. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a very long time and finally made it out. The place is quite the cute and nice vibe with very friendly service. I think the servers checked everytime we used our napkin to replace it. The food is really good too possibly the best roll I've had in the bay area. The price is not cute however but compared to other places to get sushi rolls I might just prefer here! read more

I think this is a solid place for sushi rolls! We were seated pretty quick on a Friday around 8:30pm. I got the Victoria roll because I loveeee spicy tuna. It was really good and fresh tasting! The agedashi tofu sauce was amazing. It didn't have the mochi texture that I've tried from other places but it was still great to try. We sat at the bar which was a chill experience. Came her on a weeknight. No wait but quite busy. The batter for the veggie tempura was good. Mango spider roll was great. The Omakase sashimi was $64 for 16 fish. So $4 per fish prefer much. Very reasonable pricing and everything tasted very fresh. The only complaint I have is - we asked the server for more fresh wasabi (look at the photo, it barely came with any wasabi for 14 pieces of fish !! ) and he didn't inform us that it would have cost extra. I hate it when restaurants aren't transparent with their customers up front. So if you use a normal about of fresh wasabi when you eat sashimi, be prepared to pay $3.95 for extra fresh wasabi because they are stingy with the fresh wasabi. read more
Long lines either means overhyped or truly good!! Glad to announce that this restaurant is the result of the latter Food quality - I give a 5/5, all of the fish, katsu and even down to the ginger was superb and fresh quality. I truly had no complaints about any of the food. The crunchy salmon roll was my favorite - please give me 10 of those. They did not hold back on the quantity of crunchy tempura flakes. Inside, the store is resemblant of a traditional japanese restaurant with bar service, tatami mats and tables. Service was quick and friendly once inside the store. On the pricier side for food items but that's fair for Japanese foods (and honestly worth the price) THE ONE CON I HAD was the wait system. The waitlist sign was tucked on the side, leaving many people confused on how to sign up on the waitlist. I recommend putting the sign in a more central location near the door front. We waited roughly 35 minutes for a table, although we were top of the list for at least 20 of those minutes. I wish staff was more friendly with helping to navigate the wait. They were very rushed at times :( I highly recommend doing a reservation in advance if you can or signing up the waitlist early All in all, great date night spot for superb sushi but needs a few tweaks to be truly amazing! The fish was fresh and overall the meal was decent. The side salad was quite small, but the dressing was very thick and there was way too much of it. The eggplant had a bit too much garlic and was also on the salty side, while the salmon was slightly dry. Service was okay--nothing particularly memorable, but no major issues either. Overall, not a bad Japanese restaurant, especially if you're looking for fresh fish, but a few dishes could use better balance. read more
4.5 stars rounded up to 5 star experience on Sunday evening 1 hour after opening. The interior design reminds me of being actually in Japan and I did not have to wait to be seated! The service was absolutely perfect, everyone is extremely attentive and hardworking. I enjoy how they make sure your hot water is hot, and if they come by to check and it's cold they will throw it out and refill you up. Wasabi quality is on the higher end compared to other restaurants. The salad had a little too much dressing which was overwhelming but all the other aspects cover for it. Onto the food selection and review! Omakase - 9/10 Saba Shioyaki - 6.5/10 Bay Scallop Roll - 9/10 Mango Spider 9/10 Toro Sashimi 2x - 11/10 Kanpachi (Amberjack) 2x - 8.5/10 Ginza Roll - 9/10 Overall the food was VERY delicious! The fish is extremely fresh and the quality is definitely on the upper echelon compared to their competitors. The toro sashimi was the star of the show, it was so good; had to get a second order of it after finishing the first round! All the rolls were phenomenal in size and quality! Their selection of rolls are amazing, ordered a winner every single time. Some big back tips; The mango spider is delicious if you crave that crunch in a roll, the Ginza roll is a bit more cooked fish within the roll, and the Bay Scallop is perfect for scallop lovers! They put some very large scallops on there. I personally love getting a side of ponzu as well. The Kampachi Amberjack was very good as well and the Omakase lived up to expectations! The only thing that wasn't superb was thei Shaba Shioyaki. Just a bit dry, and lacked some flavor and freshness. These minor thangs can be overlooked however because the service and attentiveness of their workers are very noticeable and they take care of you very well here. Everything said and done was 270, and at the end of the meal I felt very welcomed and will return with others to try even more items from their menu! Came here with a big group of friends, and we ordered a lot of food. Every single dish was absolutely delicious! The omakase box was not only beautifully presented but also incredibly fresh. Each piece of sushi was thick, high quality, and you could tell it was prepared with so much care and attention to detail. A huge shoutout to our servers, Alan and Henry. They checked on us throughout the meal and made sure we had everything we needed. Alan was especially knowledgeable--he introduced every type of fish on the table and explained each one with so much passion. It really made the experience even more enjoyable. Alan and Henry were also hilarious and made us feel so comfortable from start to finish. Great food, excellent service, and such a fun atmosphere. We'll definitely be back! read more

We came as a group of 7 and were able to try variety of things. Lion king and Crispy Philly roll were very good! Fish was fresh on all sets we ordered. Deserts options are nice: we tried mochi ice cream and crepe cake. There were a lot of people but we got sitted pretty quickly. Would come back again. read more
We came here for my sister's birthday and could not have asked for a better place to celebrate! (They do not do anything special for birthday, it seems, but the omakase box is the perfect "treat yoself" spread) Appetizers: -Soft Shell Crab ($10.95) - Super hot fried and crispy, served with katsu sauce. Entrees: -Omakase Sashimi ($63.95) - This is the BEAUTIFUL splurge item. It looks like a mosaic. -Chirashi Don ($32.95) - GORGEOUS authentic plating in a wood japanese box, and the amount of fish they give you is so, so, generous. I split this with everyone because it's so much protein. -Unagi Don ($20.95) - Really delicious, high quality, and great portions. Rolls we Split: -Rantei Maki ($17.95) -California Roll ($8.95) These were both well made, had a great filling-to-rice ratio, and delicious. The sushi is top notch, the presentation is stunning, and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are very swift, attentive, and polite. There was a tiny bit of a wait on a Saturday evening. Rantei Japanese Cuisine was a nice spot in Santa Clara when we were craving fresh sushi, rolls, and donburi. The restaurant itself was nice and comfortable, and everything we ordered tasted fresh. The Kaisen Don was an 8/10. It was fresh and satisfying, but it does come with a lot of rice, so it fills you up pretty fast. I still enjoyed it, but the rolls and hand roll stood out more for me. The Golden Hand Roll was a 10/10 and easily one of the highlights. It had that premium, loaded hand roll feel with fresh ingredients and a good balance of flavor and texture. This is one of those items I'd definitely order again. For rolls, the Ginza Roll was a 9/10, while the White Dragon Roll and Rantei Roll were both 10/10. The White Dragon Roll had a nice mix of richness and freshness without feeling too heavy, and the Rantei Roll felt worth ordering as one of their signature-style rolls. Overall, Rantei is definitely a place I'd come back to when I'm in the mood for quality sushi in Santa Clara. The restaurant was nice, the food tasted fresh, and with multiple items hitting 10/10 for me, it's easy to see why this spot is worth keeping in rotation. read more

We came here a little after 6pm this past Sunday. We joined the waitlist and were about 8th in line. The wait wasn't too bad; we were called in after about 15 minutes. We each ordered a don. I got the Chirashi Don, which came with assorted sashimi, tamago, and ikura over rice. The presentation was beautiful, and I really liked the variety of sashimi. There was a good amount of fish, and it was soft and silky. There was also a light layer of furikake between the fish and rice, which was a nice touch. We ordered a few additional items to share among the four of us: the Tai (Red Snapper) Nigiri, Rantei roll, and Warriors roll. I don't think I've had raw red snapper before, but it was good. Each roll had at least two types of fish, and I loved the amount of fish on them. Staff was friendly and service was good. Overall, we had a wonderful meal! read more

I ordered the omakase set and the kaisen don after seeing all the overwhelming photos on Yelp. The food is very Instagram-worthy. It was fresh and delicious, but the portions were a bit small for the price. The service was great because they were always quick and respectful. This place gets crowded very quickly, so it's best to arrive early. I also ordered the matcha tiramisu, but I would skip it because it was still half frozen. read more

Good luck, nobody has ever picked up the phone whenever I call. I've just walked in. Food is great. But attentiveness to customers isn't what they are known for.
