We were celebrating birthday. The b-day girl loves sushi and we went on weekend evening. The place was crowded so we were glad we made a reservation-"back room" I noticed they had people jotting down on the wait list. Food was better than your typical Japanese sushi place - personally, I wished their sushi rice was a bit more firm. Their tempura was excellent and plentiful, though fewer for calamari. We were having our dinner in the back room and it was cozy. It felt like converted living room or smaller office. But, the other guests were respectful and we didn't have to fight over the noise. The entrees are great and almost too big (my wife takes half of her katsu home for lunch the next day). The sushi is solid. Good choice, basic and more fancy rolls done well. It was not fun ! We were sat at the last table in their little back room , we were so squeezed by the people sitting behind us that we couldn't get out of our table . We asked for another table , the hostess reluctantly gave us the next available table and nobody brought us our utensils and waters. We eventually went to get it ourselves. When the waiter came for our order, he was not friendly, in a hurry and the food came after a fairly long wait. Nobody came back to check on us , and all the plates laid there , empty in front of us . Yuki was a very intimate, cozy little sushi place with a lot of great options. My friend and I came for dinner on a Tuesday night and got seated very quickly; the waiters were very efficient and attentive. We got a small bowl of soba noodles for free right when we sat down which was very nice. The soft shell crab was flavorful albeit a little soggy. It usually is busy enough that people have to wait outside for a table. We got there at 5:00 and luckily sat right down. My hubby got his usual sushi order. Tuna and salmon rolls as well as a rainbow roll. He was impressed with the higher grade of fish used for the rolls. My Brother-in-law got the Curry stew with pork katsu. You can tell the chef exactly what level of heat/spicy you want for your curry. That is a real bonus because you can get exactly what you want if you crave spice go for it if you have a sensitive pallet then tone down the spicy. You can have it however you desire. He said that the stew was perfect and a total flavor bomb in the best way possible I had the Yakatori beef. The presentation was great it came in its own cast iron pot. The broth was a little on the sweet side which was exactly what I was looking for. It was a huge portion so you can easily share. The noodles were cooked perfectly they weren't gummy. TLDR: I'm not sure what the clipboard in front of the restaurant was, but it doesn't appear to be too important as a couple behind me held the door open for me while I was trying to figure out what to do with it and the host seated us both at separate tables in spite of them not using the clipboard. When I got back I noticed my name scratched out to indicate that I was served, but among the numerous people I had seen enter I had only seen one name below Came here for lunch and was greeted with friendly service and an option between a regular table and a tatami, which involved having to take off your shoes. I decided to opt for the regular table, and was given water while I figured out what to order. The ambiance is sleek yet comforting - small enough to feel intimate, while still having enough room to seat plenty of people with a section for tatamis for those who want a more authentic experience. I decided to get the sashimi combo, which came with miso soup, a salad and plain rice. The sashimi was good (one of the pieces was a little harder to chew in comparison to the others but was still edible), but not too filling (Luckily the sides helped with that lol). It's no Sushi Arashi (which is probably a hard standard to live up to considering the thick cuts of sashimi that they use) but it was enjoyable enough. Yuki Sushi was a go-to spot for my wife and I when we lived in Santa Clara, and I'm happy to report that over five years later they are still going strong, delivering quality Japanese meals in a cozy and chic environment. Each meal starts off with an amuse bouche of soba noodles which is a pleasant addition that you don't see too often. One of the things I appreciate about Yuki Sushi is that while they certainly specialize in actual sushi dishes, they have an extensive offering of both hot and cold Japanese dishes beyond your typical rolls and nigiri. The Beef Tataki was a satisifying appetizer, though they certainly stretch the definition of "seared" as this was pretty much just straight-up raw. Nothing wrong with that and it was still a tasty dish, just be mentally prepared for it to moo back at you when you eat it. The Chicken Kara Age was a generous portion, but honestly it wasn't my favorite variation of this popular dish. I found the breading and chicken itself to be overly dry, and they don't serve it with any kind of dipping sauce which is a shame. Even a simple Kewpie mayo on the side would go a long way to improving it. The sushi scene in San Jose is pretty crowded with options, but Yuki Sushi sets itself a cut above with its enjoyable atmosphere and extensive menu options. This is such a hidden gem in the Santa Clara area. Tucked away in a tiny plaza, this spot has lunch deals you can't refuse. They're also one of the few spots nowadays to have tatami seating for 3 tables. They do also have normal seating available. Despite the 1k+ reviews on yelp, Yuki Sushi is a huge disappointment. We came here for lunch, and had the probably worst chirashi don in my life. Maybe they decided to add a "halloween flair" to the dish, but the entire don tasted extremely sweet as if im eating candy. The "sweet vegetables" which arent usually in a chirashi don (and in very large number relative to the fish here) is overseasoned with sugar and the taste heavily bleeds into everything else. Tamago was also very sweet, as well as the tuna (for some reason). The little pieces of fish had a rubbery texture and didnt really have much flavour to them; you can get better quality from grocery store sashimi. Finally the rest was extremely cold as if it was taken from the refridgerator. As can be shown in the picture, 30% of the rice is uncovered, and just under half of that is veges and tamago. Overall for 26$ this dish is nothing but a grocery store leftover that's recoated in sugar and repackaged in a ceramic for easy profit. What a disgrace. Needless to say, i will never come back for another meal. read more

They served drinks first then miso soup. My bento had a good sized salmon collar served with lemon wedge and the saba was tasty too although it could have used more salt. Great Spot. Yuki has been here forever- even when i was a mere child knee-high to a grasshopper. The food quality its very fresh, and the crew is kind and helpful. Other people must feel the same, because there is usually a wait at the common dining times. Seating looks to have expanded outside the restaurant in another area, although i haven not sat there. They do have tatami mats in a part of the restaurant where you sit "on the ground" but in reality put your legs down into a little area under the table. Shoes are required to be off when you sit in that area, but the kids love to sit there. This place is a staple on our sushi "rotation" and in fact my daughter asked to eat here for her birthday this Friday. She's a 12 yo sushi "connoisseur" who's not just about California rolls, so that should give you an idea of the food. Definitely come visit this Santa Clara icon. read more

The dragon roll was okay. I liked the toro nigiri, my bf said the uni didnt taste fresh, it was on the creamy side and did notice a difference from all the other uni places we've tried. The place is small so party of two is easy to seat at the bar, we were a party of 5 so we had to wait about 10 minutes for a regular table, but nothing unreasonable for a Friday dinner. Food was delicious and prices reasonable. Everyone loved the tempura. My kids loved the miso, teriyaki and gyoza in the bentos. Servers were on top of everything, they offered chopstick helpers to my kids. The hamachi crunch, toshi and honey pecan rolls were our favorites. Be advised, restrooms are not fully handicap accessible (my mom uses a cane or wheelchair and she would not have been able to use), but it was fine for my kids and I.
