Visiting Beaumont again I was excited to stop by an old favorite! I will say the cashier was very friendly but the barista who incorrectly made my husband's drink was less than enthusiastic and not kind as I asked about the correct drink order. My husband tried to make sure another request he had made originally to the drink was accurate and again, the barista very short and dismissive. Passing back thru Beaumont, we branched over to Rao's. The older location (on Calder St.) was closed so we did an even bigger detour across I-10 to this location..which is newer, bigger, and even more popular. I guess being located near a mall has it perks..like a drive-thru and nicer restrooms (compared to it's older sibling). Like it's other locale, we found whimsical and seasonal merchandise. Unfortunately, the staff wasn't as friendly or knowledgeable. I didn't notice they had sugar cookies until after we paid because they were along the back wall display. I also don't remember seeing any lunch options. My kids had the giant cupcakes, I have the Pineapple upside down cupcake, and my husband had the strawberry cheesecake. The kids cupcakes were pretty good, but both the pineapple upside-down and strawberry cheesecake were only kinda good. Before ordering, we asked 2 staff members what was the most popular and neither one was able to make any indication. So, I am not sure if cupcakes are their strongest suit to say the least. Bottled beverages was the only other thing we consumed despite reading complementing tidbits about their coffee. So our affection for Rao's wasn't as strong as with the other location but I am still keeping them in mind when I pass thru Beaumont. read more

One of those teen memories again but not as good as it used to be. When you go into Baptist Hospital that's the first thing you see is all the baked goods. Of course the kids like the cookies full of icing. What are you going to do pull you kid down the hall kicking and screaming about a very expensive cookie loaded with icing. I have been here multiple times and have tried various items. Their coffee is pretty good as are their dessert fruit cups (not sure what they're called exactly). I am not a fan of their icing though. Any time I have tried it, it's usually unexciting and tastes like plastic. Heyooo Rao's!! I thought that sounded good haha! My husband is from the BMT area and I am not sure why after countless trips here he waited until now to bring me here! It only took 6 years lol .... oh well. Rao's has been around for more than 70 years .... wow! They are a bakery, sandwich shop and cafe. If you are looking for a King cake this is the place for sure. I hear they are delicious. When you first walk in you will see a long counter with multiple registers. It is a little confusing but if you stand there for a minute someone comes over and asks how they can help. On my first visit I ordered the half sandwich and half soup, which also came with potato chips. I did the turkey panini sandwich and honestly it was just ok. The soup however was the star - broccoli cheddar - it was delicious and perfectly done. If I do lunch here again I just want a bowl of that! The husband ordered a mini strawberry baby cake, which was made from scratch and great too! I had a hot early grey tea with lunch. Before I left I got some cookies and muffins to go. I ended up sharing the cookies with friends and we all loved them. My favorite thing I got and went back the next day for more, was the strawberry cream cheese muffin! I love just about anything with cream cheese, so I was excited to see 5 different muffins with cream cheese in the bakery! The next day I tried the blueberry cranberry cream cheese and it was amazing!! If you are in Beaumont and looking for a unique and local place to eat then I would definitely recommend Rao's Bakery! Don't wait 6 years to try it like I did. I will be making many more trips here when I am in town. WARNING TO ANY PARTY ROOM RENTERS! I had my baby shower here on the 8th and these people basically ruined it. I reserved their party room back in January for $50. The day of the party I arrived 30 minutes early to decorate. (That's all the time they allow) I went to the counter to let them know I was here for my Baby Shower, and they looked confused and said they didn't have a party from 4-6. When two week prior my sister went in and ordered my food and cake!! Rao's had absolutely NOTHING ready! They threw my cake together, and drew some deranged bunny on it (it looked like a stoned half cat half bunny..I am not joking) and it was nothing like what I ordered. I went in the party room to decorate and it was 78 degrees in there and remained that way for the entire party!! I'm 35 weeks pregnant! I'm just going to list what happened next... 1. The server was 45 minutes late. 2. The food was late. 3. I asked for extra time and was rushed because there was a party after mine. 4. No apology from manager. 5. Offered a small discount when they should of taken at least half off imo.. I will never do business with these people again. Rao's is a great experience. I was first introduced to Rao's earlier this year. I have been through Beaumont for years for work and pleasure but did not know about this place. But now that I do, I try to pass through there as often as I can. The bake goods are simply delicious. There is nothing there that I have not enjoyed. The apple pie slice is huge and crazy good. As for the coffee, it is incredible. The Dancing Goat and Jamaica Me Crazy are both awesome. The Geleto is incredible as well. There are a number of choices and flavors. You must try some. While I am fan of the food and coffee, the staff can sometimes be questionable. I have had some not so pleasant encounters with workers. There was nothing to fuss about but it wasn't the level of customer service I would expect for a place with such a great food product. They also serve coffee, wraps, sandwiches, coffee and etc. I love they're "Chocolate Chocolate Mousse" Cake...I had it for my 16th birthday - it was moist, the cream on the cake was so light like whipped, and did I mention OMG Delicious?!!! Anywho, you can purchase by the slice or as a whole cake. The gelatos are yummy too. Although the prices are not steep but aren't cheap either; if you can find a coupon somewhere, I recommend to use it haha. But, if it's your first time to Rao's Bakery, it's worth the risk I'd say. Been here several times while passing thru Beaumont, in search of a really good cup of coffee (first in 2007). They didn't disappoint (and this is a career barista talking) me with their solid selection of beans from a micro-roasterie in Atlanta. Their eclairs and cream puffs are also outstanding! Tonight (8/12), as I was on my way through Beaumont again, I realized I needed a wifi hotspot to send off some important documents- stat- and this was at 10PM. I was concerned I might not be able to find one so late in a small town but remembered Rao's and called them. They were closed and I asked the young man who answered if I could come sit in their parking lot and use the wifi... He said he didn't see why not, but did me one better and gave me perfect directions to another local coffeehouse that's open 24 hours. What a guy! That kind of customer service is laudable. I'd venture to give Rao's 4 stars each for its coffee and baked goods and 5 for service, which tips the scales up to 5 in my book. Every time I drive through Beaumont and Rao's is closed, I wish it wasn't! Update: Drove through Beaumont again (8/19) on my way back to Austin and stopped off this time, the great over-the-phone customer service experience described above fresh in my mind. I was less than thrilled with my experience this visit. Firstly, the goods: I grabbed a wrap out of the cooler, ordered a double cappuccino to keep me awake on my drive, and a dozen assorted cookies to bring to my improv troupe. The wrap ingredients listed lettuce and tomato, which were wholly absent. The turkey and cheese were fresh but the spinach tortilla wrap was stale. Totally unacceptable for a six dollar wrap! The cookies were nice and fresh with big chunks of chocolate and nuts and the cappuccino was good, too. Unfortunately, the barista who served me was obtuse and passive aggressive. Since there's no price list or menu board AND the signage in the bakery case was wrong, I had several questions. She was gruff in her answers, rolled her eyes at me more than once and actively avoided some pretty basic questions and specific requests about ingredients and prices. I had to ask her "what's the price difference between a dozen cookies and a half dozen?" about three times before she would divulge that information and she pretended not to hear me when I twice made requests regarding my coffee. I was the only customer in the store and I know she heard me. I figured she must be just having a bad day and tried to lighten the mood a little, making small talk. She was having NONE of it. Serious attitude problem. One final note- the street where the bakery is located is under construction and is completely impassable. I had to consult my google map and find an alternate route to get there and it was a pain. You'd THINK under those circumstances the barista would be thrilled to have a customer (potential tip, right?) and wouldn't try to make the customer feel like an ass for commenting about the bulldozers, cones and piles of rubble stretching for miles outside. I guess some people don't know how to leave their personal problems at the door when they go to work. In this job market, I'd imagine there is a STACK of applications on the manager's desk of fresh-faced, friendly baristas like the one I had the pleasure of speaking with on 8/12. The gal working yesterday might do well to realize it. Based on this experience I give Rao's just 2 stars for my food (average of the 1 star sandwich and 4 star cookies and coffee) and 2 stars for the surly barista. I figure the bad customer service that time cancels out the good service last time so I'm left just judging the food. I am bumping them down from 4 to 3 stars overall based on the stale wrap with no veggies. I feel like my experience there yesterday may have been a fluke. I'll go back but cautiously. read more

The coffee is good (4/5) (not like that burnt tasting crap of Starbucks and similar), the pastries are awesome (5/5), and the breakfast croissant sandwiches are decent (3.5/5). If I eat breakfast out I go to Rao's. Worst part of the place are the napkins. They smell horribly bad and very strong to the ink or whatever it is. I hope they change them because it is horrible. Eclectic selection of cakes, cookies, muffins and gelato all with a great personal touch from my visits with the people working the counter. Have yet to try their lunch and salad selections so I can't speak to those... Beware though, since Dowlen Road is pretty much the main retail zone in this part of town thanks to the Mall and the surrounding strip centers. Traffic Jams can happen at pretty much any and all parts of the day so you may want to consider that before the visit. That said, food is definitely worth it. read more

Came to Beaumont from out of town & stopped by Bakery yesterday. Been there many times but yesterday was a whole different & horrible experience. Placing an order was difficult since 1 of the 2 stations was operating. When we finally got to the cashier both stations had individuals training. Why would they train 2 people during a busy late morning on a Saturday? Placed order & had to repeat order 4 separate times before order was correct. Finally checked out & was issued a number. Coffee order too 10mins & 1 member of our party just ordered plain coffee. After 10 min wait found out that cashier was suppose to provide a cup so wouldn't have to wait. After 15 min wait went back too counter to find out status of order. Asked for refund & my order magically appeared. Was surprised my 1 mini croissant (size of a pigs & blanket) too 15mins???! Rao's has a great treats selection and their gelato is really good, the coffee is hit and miss, which is what I went there for. Depending on who makes your latte it can be good or really bad. They put a TON of syrup and more than once I have ordered an iced coffee and they have poured hot coffee over ice making the coffee SUPER thin. They have also put granulated sugar in my iced coffee instead of a liquid sugar. I wouldn't recommend ordering a latte from here but the gelato is amazing. read more

I have only ever been here for breakfast, but with that said, their muffins are to die for -- always fresh, moist and delicious. They make several different types with cream cheese in them, which I love, and they're so big they're a meal in themselves. They also have coffee and teas, and cakes and gelato. It's a nice place to sit and read a paper with your breakfast.
