An interesting find when I walked the small tree lined streets after shopping at Monterey Market. Small, tight aisled store indeed! I found the same Quebec cheddar I normally pick up from Cheeseboard but for much less. Black diamond is a sharp cheddar with a nice salty flavor. Makes a perfect marriage for a delicious grilled cheese on multigrain sourdough bread. It's even priced right at $7.99/lb compared to Cheeseboard's price of $10.99/lb. This small shop has a great selction of cheeses, coffees, chocolates, and anything gourmet. I've been shopping there for years now and it always feels like an adventure: a new spice here, some new tea there. It's fun! The prices are also very reasonnable. My kid can't digest cow milk so I come here for him to sample the goat and sheep cheese and pick up several different kinds for him. The staff is incredibly nice and let my toddler sample many different kinds of cheeses. It is really cute and they are interested in his response. Monterey Market has a good selection of cheeses, but they lack the variety that this place has and also it is easier for us to have my son sample before I buy or I might buy something he won't eat. They also have the best dates in california. I know this because I'm a date connoisseur. Their dates melt in your mouth like brown sugar and taste like they are filled with honey. No other place carries dates like this, not whole foods, not monterey market, not local farmer's markets. Tea is another specialty and they have my favs my Numi. I would never have noticed this place because the front is littered, in my opinion, with odd bits of bowls and plates and the storefront windows don't really show what's inside. I only found out about it when my husband brought home dates one day and I said, "WHERE did you get these?!" I had passed by this market so many times, never going inside, but now it is one of my favs! Apparently Monterey Market is trying to beat out the local stores by selling what they are selling at cheaper prices, but as long as Country Cheese Coffee Market stays open, they'll be getting my business for the cheese, dates, and tea! read more

One of my favorite spots in Berkeley, this is a really great place to pick up all sorts of great stuff. Tons of bulk tea, organic, fair trade, locally roasted coffe, chocolate, cheese, gelato, butter, brownies, crackers, honey, sugar, salt... The list goes on. I have liked this shop for awhile, but lately they are really turning it on. Every time I have been in there in the last couple of months, they are doing extensive cheese samples, and really have some great cheeses. But as other reviewers have mentioned, it doesn't stop there. From marinated anchovies to jams, to artisan chocolate, they have great stuff. And the coffee drinks are wonderful too. I have yet to buy coffee beans yet, but I will try that next time I'm in. And, everyone working there is super nice. read more

This is a great place. They have a huge selection of cheese, tea, coffee, and salt. Never had their chocolate. Their coffee is roasted on-site, and is good. It's true they don't store their zillion types of cheese in the absolutely perfect condition for every cheese. I've purchased 100+ pieces of cheese, and one did taste kind of bad. If you're a cheese snob, you might not like this place. Since I'm on a budget and don't relish paying the Gourmet Ghetto tax, I love this place. It's really cheap. And they have 6 kinds of feta, in bulk. The owners are incredibly nice. I once showed up at their counter with $100 of cheese for an event. The owner asked how many people I was buying for, and told me to put back $20 worth of the cheese - it was too much. read more

I'm mad about this darling market and the folks who run it. I go there for their yummilicious organic coffees, the brilliant collection of British teas {plus the overflow of various herbal varieties} and their tempting num-nums winking from the cash register. This is a 10-minute walk from where I live. The few times it has been crowded I simply don't go in as I'm just a tad claustrophobic.... which keeps me away from Monterey Market and instead getting MY organic produce at Berkeley Natural Grocers down the street! I think these folks are absolutely dear. That and the Hopkins Bakery make that little strip IT for me. read more

I have been to this shop a couple of times and, aside from their cheese selection, I was not horrendously wowed. There were a few eclectic things here and there that made me think, "Oh, well that's cool. I might get that at some point." That was pretty much my only sense of allure to this place. However, up until the last time I was there, it was all just all right. The last time I was there, the woman behind the counter was so incompetent that she not only charged my card twice for the groceries that I picked out, but also told me that it did not go through. Later checking, both swipes went through and I am now out thirty bucks with no food. This place is a gamble and definitely, definitely not worth it. Stay away. read more

This is the best local business! It has such an odd assortment of imported foods, but I love it. I show up and always get dark chocolate covered ginger, a box of tea, 4 kinds of cheese (3 of which are goat) and some crackers. Best coffee in the Bay Area and beyond. And y'all know what a statement that is. Often it is still roasty warm in the bag and I carry it home next to my nose, sniffing away. Chocolate selection is unpretentious and unending. Great import marmalades, oils, salamis, and loose teas. It is not glamorous or brightly lit, but shopping at the Cheese Market is like digging through the pile at Goodwill and pulling out a Prada. Be daring: explore food outside your antibacterial box and actually interact with local store owners. They're really nice, more than happy to help you and chat about food. read more

Sorry but I have to disagree with all the amazing reviews about this store. They do have a pretty good selection of cheese, chocolates, sweets, teas from around the world, some of which you will not find anywhere else in the area (this is the reason for the two stars instead of one), but everything is extremely pricey. I still could get past the price if a good number of items in the shop weren't past their expiration date (and yet still on the shelves). I will go as far as saying that I will be willing to ignore this too (after all, if you notice that some item is expired you just don't buy it) if this was a honest mistake, which I have now gotten to realize it most likely is not. Last time I bought some cheese at Country Cheese Coffee Market it was right before the Holidays (around Dec 15); I was taking a look at the variety of cheeses in the big chest refrigerator (most of which don't even have the price stamped on), when the person who was cutting and packing some cheese at that moment, and who I assumed was the owner, told me that there was a great deal on some Italian Langherino (two for the price of one). I was in a bit of rush, so stupidly enough I bought two of those and left. After a few days I opened one of them and just by chance the price tag (this time it was there... what do you know) came off to reveal the expiration date tag, which was VERY accurately hidden below the price tag. The cheese had expired on Nov 30. Now, I find very hard to believe this was a honest mistake. I am not a picky person and I am not that strict when it comes to expiration dates of items like pasta, or tea, but cheese is definitely not something I trust eating if it's expired for over two weeks. On top of that, if I spend good money in a store I expect the stuff I buy to be equally good. I had been thinking to bring the cheese back to the store and get my money back but I never got around to it (I don't live exactly around the corner) so it went straight into the trash bin a few days ago after sitting in my refrigerator for weeks (I HATE TO WASTE FOOD!!). Needless to say I will never buy anything from Country Cheese Coffee Market ever again. read more

I used to be mad into this place, especially when they had that brie/camembert deal that rocked my world. But sad to say lately, their cheese is always moldy. This happened for the first time maybe six months ago--I brought home a nice goat cheese that, once I'd opened it, I realized had obviously turned. The lamest thing was that when I brought it back, the cashier told me she was unable to take returns because management didn't let her (wtf?) so I had to call back later. I brought the cheese home, again (wtf?), and waited for the manager to call me. She did not. I called back, and while she eventually gave me my money back first she tried to tell me that I was making it up and give me a primer in goat cheese ("goat cheese tastes different," something to that effect). I mean, come on. I know my cheese. Since then I've tried again a few times, and like clockwork: mold. I know cheese is inherently moldy, but a simple piece of cheddar shouldn't be covered in white stuff the day after it's purchased--any way you slice it. read more

This is our coffee store... period. We get them to mix French and Italian dark roast, which we can't do in most other stores, and they do it happily. Really wonderful selection of cheeses, and tastings! And great crackers and baked goods. There is wonderful chocolate here as well, as other reviewers have noted, though if you are looking for little gift boxes of great chocolate, you should head to The Xocolate Bar on Solano. Finally, the "Country" in the store's name alludes to the intimate size and the personal service; some of the staff appear to have been born in another country. But I have never experienced a language barrier in the store, au contraire. They understand my coffee, cheese, and chocolate needs perfectly! Bon appetit! read more
