    2023 Elantra SEL
    Jason S.

My 2008 Elantra was a great car, but 15 years old. Time to trade for a new one. Post pandemic I had nothing but problems with the Ray Skillman Hyundai West service department so I wasn't going to buy a new vehicle from that location. Looking at 2023 Elantra SEL models online produced several emails & phone calls from area dealers. I got 7 calls from different sales people at a Carmel dealership. Nothing from Ray Skillman Hyundai West. Only 1 from Avon Hyundai, so I made arrangements for a test drive in Avon. What a great experience! My wife & I were greeted by Katie, who introduced us to Cameron Klein, our sales person. Granted, he is in sales but also one of the nicest people you could work with. He answered all of our questions and provided information on my areas I was unfamiliar with. Unfortunately, they only had one model available in what we were looking for. A beautiful car but with all black exterior and interior. Didn't want that. So, Cameron found a car in Ohio to our liking with all the features we wanted and at a very good price. We reserved it and were introduced to Austin Shelton, the finance manager. Another great guy! He even advised us on how we could get an addition $500 of the price quoted. The car would arrive in a day or two. All good! We went home and I received a phone call later that afternoon from Avon Hyundai saying that the car in Ohio that they thought was available was actually listed as "in transit". Basically that means they have no idea where it really is or when or if it will arrive. But they promised to keep looking. The next morning I received a message from Cameron that the car had been located and would be on their lot that afternoon. We returned, loved it (beautiful gray exterior & interior), test drove it, and bought it. The whole experience with purchasing at that dealership was excellent. I very highly recommend contacting Cameron Klein for your sales representative. Oh, and we love the car!

My brand new Santa Fe from Bob Rohrman Hyundai!

I have had nothing but issues with this dealership, both sales and service departments, as well as management. Sales Department: I walked in knowing I wanted to buy the new Santa Fe. I was hoping for a specific color, but was not married to it. My salesman, Brian, did not seem overly enthused or motivated to be selling the vehicle. Most of my dealing was with the sales manager on duty, Mitch, who was cocky and arrogant and talked down to me. I had shopped around for the sticker price at several Hyundai dealers in the Indy area - the "best pricing available" per Mitch was several thousand over that sticker price with "no room to negotiate." He also told my the color I wanted (Hampton Grey, which would be arriving later in the week) was a premium paint that included an additional fee (it's not, per the Hyundai website). I am also registering the vehicle in another state (where I am a legal resident), where the sales tax on vehicle purchase is capped at $500. I had checked with my local DMV to ensure that an out of state dealership could handle the taxes, etc correctly prior to going to the dealership. Mitch stated that they could not handle anything with the out of state taxes, that it was "literally not possible," that I would need to pay sales tax and fees per Indiana law and then handle the out of state taxes/paperwork on my own. I was fed up with someone lying to my face, so I asked for the quoted price--not including tax, title, and registration--in writing so I could sleep on it. Mitch, the sales manager, refused. Luckily, I had already taken a photo of it. I took that photo to the Bob Rohrman Hyundai on the east side (5 stars!), who matched it as the out-the-door price. No issues with only paying the out of state taxes. I wrote them a check for the full cost of the vehicle--about $3500 less than Mitch quoted me--and went home with my brand new car the same day. Service Department: I've had my vehicle in the shop twice in the last 4 months. The initial appointment was for an open recall. When I made my appointment, I specifically asked if the part could be ordered in advance, as I work night shift 60 hours/week, so taking the time to bring the car in and sit more than once was extremely inconvenient. I was assured the part would be ordered and available--so I get off work, drive to the dealership, wait for 2 hours, only for (surprise) the repair was not made because the part was not available. Not only that, but there were 2 recalls listed on the paperwork, one of which no on had discussed with me. Obviously, I understand that a repair cannot be made without the parts, but I voiced my frustration at the time. I was told I would get a call when the part arrived. They never called. I called multiple times and finally, two months later, was told the part had been available with my name on it for several weeks. First available appointment for this recall repair and several other issues was over a month out. Fine, I scheduled the appointment for 2 days ago. Yesterday, Nathan called me to say the car was done. I asked, "Everything is done?" And he stated, "Yep, everything is taken care of." When I picked up the car today, neither of the recalls had been repaired. I called the service manager, Marshall, to discuss this issue. The visit cost $1200, and I'm livid that not only was the car not complete, requiring yet another visit to the dealership, but that the service rep lied right to my face. Marshall did not really seem to care, and said that this happens sometimes. I understand that a part cannot be pulled out of thin air, but any sort of clear communication would have been the bare minimum acceptable course of action. He continued to tell me there was only one recall, despite all my paperwork from both visits stating 2 recalls, 2 parts ordered. I'm not really sure what to make of that, but it comes across as wildly dishonest and lacking in integrity. This is the kind of dealing I would expect from an Andy Mohr dealership. Apparently, Ray Skillman doesn't set the bar any higher. There's a thorough lack of integrity, multiple managers have no issue lying to customers, and there are even some potentially illegal dealings where sales are concerned. No thanks, I will not be back.

New Santa Fe (left) to replace my 2017 which I handed off to my son.

My experience was good. I was able to get the vehicle I wanted with the help from Chad and Mike (finance) would recommend.

I didn't know what to expect. If I had known that you could rent a golf cart to go in the yard instead of pushing a wheelbarrow around a 6 football field sized yard filled with 100's of cars I would have done so. Noted. But all the vehicle's were elevated so getting under them was easy. There were engine lifts out there i didn't have to use one so I don't know what or how someone would go about borrowing one. But they have them. The parts are very reasonable and if you are in the tires or batteries, pretty much anything else that you could want or need for a vehicle they have it.

Overall, a pretty good experience. The staff were friendly, and the prices were cheap. Now I know it's in the name, but just know that you will have to take the part off the scrap vehicle out in the yard. So some basic wrenching knowledge is needed. I took my own tools, but it looked like they had some tools for use out there. Also, if you are looking to get a big part, or a bunch of parts, they have wheelbarrows you can use, or golf carts you can rent for $5/hr ($20 deposit). The $2 yard entry fee was interesting...not sure why they'd charge me to look, but it's only $2. Also if you sign up for their free vip program you get two free entries and $1 entries after that.
