Ray's....you may need to take out a small mortgage on your house to shop here...No seriously the prices are a little higher than most chain grocery stores, but what are you going to do when you need something last minute? A lot of locals drive either to Redding or Medford to do the huge shopping. They do have nice produce & I got some killer halibut steaks their last night! Ok, this place was great! Much larger and nicer than the Ray's in Weed, where I was working. Great selection of food, food stuffs, and beer, of the local, not-so-local, and not-so-good varieties. Produce was fresh, and everyone knew each other, except for me. Normally, I'd expect to get nasty looks, but it just meant that some of the employeed gravitated towards me to make sure I found things alright. Ugh, I MISS THIS KIND OF SERVICE!!! I don't live anywhere near Ray's Food Place and that's a good thing because they have Killer Brownies that are to die for. Whenever I'm in the area which is about twice a year I stop at Ray's just to buy brownies. The brownies are moist and dense. Definitely worth stopping for if you're traveling through Mt. Shasta. The last time I was there, they had four varieties of topping. Crushed Oreos, peanut butter cups, coconut candy and butter brickle. Yummm! read more

An old, rundown store that does not appear to be very clean. Produce and deli meats are of terrible quality. The Kertchner brand deli meat they sell tasted so awful that I threw out $20 worth of food after I got back. A very small store with a correspondingly small selection. Price gouging is occurring here for sure, since I paid more here at this rundown old store for standard groceries than I would at the gorgeous high-end Raleys in Lake Tahoe, which is one of the most expensive grocery stores in all of CA. Incredible! The employees here are unhelpful and unfriendly, they certainly didn't want to give me the time of day both times I came in here. Who would shop here on purpose??? For those of you who are visiting and looking for groceries, there is a Raleys with normal prices in Yreka, or else head to Redding to one of the Albertsons. Well stocked supermarket with a great meat selection (I spotted a while tri tip, gigantic). We camp up this way once or twice a year and we've stopped bringing most of our food provisions with us. We just grab what we need when we arrive and pack in anything that requires more complext prep. But produce, bread, meat, charcoal, etc is all readily available for a good price. It's seems like this whole store is going down hill. To no surprise. I come to mount Shasta every year over the summer and every year up till this year it has been an excellent place. For some reason this year the whole place changed. The deli is by far the worst service I've experience in all my 15 years shopping at rays. Not a single person was up front, I waited patiently for 5 mins even yelled for someone to come out. Nobody came. Maybe hiring new staff would help create a better environment for the customers. Holy crap. There's this tortellini salad that they sell in the deli. TO DIE FOR. My mom was freaking out over the white stuff in it, it's freaking delicious smoked cheese. I just pick out the chunks of salami and go to town on it. YUM! Oh yea, they have groceries too. Prices are a bit high but everyone has been pretty friendly to me thus far when I'm in town. Decent selection of stuff considering you're pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Parking is usually something special too, if you know what I mean, even though the parking lot is pretty big. "Rip Off Rays" is what most locals call this place and it's entirely appropriate. If the products were quality, I would have no problem paying the prices but unfortunately they are not. Multiple times I have purchased meat and produce there only to find out the insides were rotten or the meat had turned. The icing on the cake is that most of the baggers cannot bag groceries and I just unpacked a bag to find my eggs, avocados and bananas on the bottom of the bag with heavy items stuffed on top. Only plus is that the cashiers are friendly. Seriously, just drive to Redding. You'll end up saving money and get better quality goods. read more

Maybe Ray and his sandwich minions were having an off day, and maybe my expectations had been set a little high when I had my sandwich order all ready (Some delightful veggie thing) at Berryvale (den of long haired- tie-dyed-crystal-worshiping Lemurians and the like ) and was turned away, because they dont make sandwiches after 4pm. Seriously? Since when are Hippies punctual? Boooo! So Ray's was around the corner. But honestly, I wish I had gone to the Subway Sandwich next door. The woman taking my order was rude and looked like she was in to crystals too... the kind you smoke. She informed me that if I wanted a vegetarian sandwich it would be $2 more than the "regular ones" I asked her what was on it and she said "not meat". Yeah. I figured. 20 miles down the road at a rest stop my BF and I open our "we have to get from Seattle to San Francisco in one day so we are only stopping once" meal, to find that both sandwiches were wrong, one was someone else's order, and one was the exact opposite of what I had asked for (which is hard to fuck up when you hand the person your order on a little form with boxes you check to indicate what you want on there). And both were very very un-good. And yeah I do admit to being a food snob, but we were both ravenous, road trip ravenous and neither of us could choke down more than we thought was absolutely necessary for survival. Nasty. My recommendation, if you want a sandwich that does not make you sick: Get to shasta before 4pm and visit the coven of hippies with the tight schedule. read more

Wow two days in a row shopping here and I already wish I hadn't come in. Shawnie my checker was so rude. She glared at me and had no customer service skills at all. I smiled and tried to be cordial and she literally threw my money into my hand and it flew everywhere. Never apologized or anything. She was also my checker last night. She was the exact same way only she wouldn't look at me or speak to me didn't even say one word......instead talked crap about person who was in front of me with the bagger. I will try once more with different checker otherwise not shopping here because I didn't like the way I was treated. She works nights it's about 9pm on Tuesday. Do not shop here unless you have no other options & if you do make sure to check to make sure what you're buying isn't out dated. They don't rotate their stock or evidently check the dates because I have found out dated food on every trip to this store. Everything is overpriced & not very good quality. Your best bet is to go to one of the other stores in town for small trips & drive to Redding for big ones. read more

Caution!!! Double and triple check the dates on any dairy products before purchasing. Also doesn't hurt to do a very close inspection that the grated cheese in particular is not one solid clump and that any of the cheese products are not already moldy. It seems that about 50% of the time I buy cheese there, it's either moldy or has some other problem (is dried out on the perimeter but liquefied in the middle, etc.) I have reported this problem to them but nothing seems to improve. Don't know if it's a problem with storage in an environment that's too warm or transportation to the facility, or improper refrigeration temperatures, but is really bad. Also bought some pina colada mix a few months ago that had expired two years ago!!! I think the only way they stay in business is that they have larger selection than the smaller, higher quality stores in the area and a lot of people don't want to drive 45 minutes for weekly grocery shopping. read more

There are no grocery stores such as raleys, safeway, luckys etc. Everything else seems liek im doing my grocery shoping at a liquor store. Until i found Ray's. This place help this not-so-country girl get some food to fill up an empty fridge. This store is Stupid expensive. I've gotten my groceries there every so often, when it's more convenient to spend too much than to travel to Redding. The prices are obviously set to take advantage of the fact that there's no competition and their the biggest store in at least a 25 mile radius. The cashiers and other store workers are nice and helpful. Sadly the prices are pretty outrageous. We have a Ray's in Talent Oregon that is also pricey but it's still not as bad as the one in Mt Shasta. (the people who work at the Ray's in Talent are awesome and my complaint is strictly about prices- the service is great there) I just treat Ray's as a 7 eleven type emergency stop for one or two items at a time. I've been shopping here 20 years, this grocery store is updated, huge beer and wine selection, always fresh produce with wide variety of organic options. Meat is processed on site. Fresh fish available all season's. Floral department with balloons has filled my children's milestones. Even though other discount markets have opened nearby. I found you get much better quality at Ray's and a true sense our Mount Shasta community from this store..worth every bit the extra cost read more

Prices are ridiculous!!! They had a manager special on some items, and would think you would get some kind of deal. Nope not at all, the manager special was marked down 10cents. That's not an exaggeration. Most the employees are cool. Except this lady named Linda. She always has something to say about everything, and she thinks she knows everything about everything. Also every time I go through her check out line she has been rude and will butt in to my conversation when I'm talking to someone else. I've heard her on multiple occasions talk bad about her coworkers and customers after they check out. She also cusses a lot. Not sure if it just when she talks to me or she's always in a bad mood? Ray's is a great place! Even for just a quick pick up or a medium grocery shopping day. Of course the prices might be a little high, but during sells, you could get great deals. I live in Mt. Shasta, about a mile from Ray's. And everyday when my mom gets home from work, she usually goes to Ray's immedially to get something. She gets there around 6:45 a.m., and they're nice enough to let her in early before they open at 7:00a.m. She's their earliest costumor! But other than the prices, Ray's is a polite and helpful way to get grocerys. read more

I agree with another poster on this site regarding Ray's being a disgrace in the community of Mt. Shasta and Weed Ca. They consistently raise their prices at least once a month. How many of the residents or even their employees get a raise in wages or cost of living that often? It's a shame for those that are retired or low-income. You must constantly be aware of the expiration dates on perishables, i.e: milk, yogurt, bagged produce or just about anything that has a "sale" price on it. I can't tell you how many times I have seen items that are "outdated" but still on the shelves. Is this legal or at best moral with all the e-coli cases occurring lately? A couple of years ago I rented a carpet cleaner and was charged a $25 rental fee plus the cost of the bottled cleaner. When I got home I was not only pissed but disgusted to find out how filthy the carpet attachment and the cleaner reservoir was. I had to completely clean the entire equipment before I could use it. When I returned it (Weed store) I mentioned this to the manager and told him he should be ashamed for allowing the equipment to be rented in such awful condition. He did not say a word but just stood there and looked at me with a stupid look on his face. Needless to say, I later went to Walmart and purchased my own carpet cleaner for $99. My advice, don't shop there if at all possible, but if you do KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS. You will probably have to return something outdated or spoiled. Thanks goodness for Weed's new Dollar General. They are certainly giving Ray's a lot of competition. Shop there first when you can and then go to Ray's if absolutely necessary. read more

Ill-stocked (quality name brands have been supplanted by a wholly inferior house brand "Something Essentials"in every department); incredibly expensive (even compared with super-service high-end stores such as Whole Foods ); and customer service is like something you might find in prison (today's travesty: "Yes, I believe we can get your money back for that [completely inedible Dungeness crab around which you planned and purchased all the ingredients for an entire dinner and drove 27 miles to purchase.] Unfortunately there IS no alternative for what passes for a full-service grocery in Mt. Sooo...I really needed some apples and banannas or my road trip. What a super neat and clean store! I also needed some leeks for cooking.This guy in produce named Jack was AWESOME!(and cute too) He went out of his way to select super fresh produce and even showed me how certain fruits and veggies should br properly cut and stored. What to look for for peek flavor and even let me sample a c ouple different apples to see what they tasted like. I left that store very satisfied and a bagful of fresh fruit and veggies! YUM. Avoid this store during the summer! The stench of some of the transient "customers" is overwhelming!!!!! Even the employees have had to put money in plastic bags so the smell would not escape every time they have to open their drawer. Another mentioned they have become physically ill from the smell. Why they are allowed these individuals to frequent the store is puzzling. More often then not they are just helping themselves to the produce and buying nothing. Meanwhile local, paying customers such as myself would rather drive to redding than shop at Rays. A manager should be available to ask these people to leave out of respect to the other 99% of their customers, not to mention their employees. read more

For a small town store they have a good selection and the prices are comparable to large grocery chains like Safeway. I stop in every time I am in town to visit and am surprised by the wide selection of fresh produce and other Items. I especially enjoy the breakfast sausage available at the meat counter and have not found any that even comes close to comparison. read more
