Rented a cabin at Rec springs July 28 - 31st. Upon arrival, check in went okay; however, I had reserved an extra night and paid a deposit that was not deducted from the additional night stay... A measly 37 dollars and some change, no big deal right? Although the Cabin was clean and the managers and employees were friendly, the managers have too much to handle and do a sub-par job of being attentive. They would like to offer all the amenities they offer but they have too many things to try and manage; therefor, can't do a great job in that territory. The BIGGEST issue we had was the rental of the can-am! This was our first every experience renting anything, let alone a side by side. (SEE PICS AND ZOOM IN) So we get reserved fine, go to start having some fun on trails with 3 other POLARIS RAZORS and roughly about 2.5 hours later I start overheating. So we and all our riding friends pull over, naturally I check the radiator and coolant reservoir, and find that there is a pinhole in the coolant reservoir. So I let it cool down, seems to be fine made it just about 2 miles down the road and over heats again, we limped into Mt. Meadow campground and I use a friends cell phone (I had no service) to call Recreation Springs and let them know there is a problem with their machine. They send an employee, after being told to go somewhere else he shows up about 2 hours later with some damn JB weld to try and fix the reservoir. LUCKILY my buddy has is own tow rope after a failed attempt with JB weld the reservoir leaked again and towed it to another little town. The employee they sent was kind and courteous. Any way the staff went and retrieved this broken down machine at Rochford as close as we could tow it. So a day went by and no word from these guys. Saturday, as I have to deal with other issues. They not only, didn't give us another machine to use, a refund or something, they nailed us with another $300, for recovery and washing, oh they also used the "insurance" to pay for the new reservoir! When we asked about what these charges were about the Manager Bruce said, no kidding BAD CHOICES!!! We were with 3 other razors and they had no problem. Do they think we were from (no offense) New York City or something? I've worked in the auto business for 20 years, and I know what it takes to plug a radiator and overheat, and we definitely did not cause the pinhole in the reservoir! It sure must be nice to run a business and not be responsible for much of anything at all, just blame it on your customers! I'm sure we aren't the only ones either. Yes I know there are some folks that go tear things up and get wild, I can assure you that we did not go anywhere my friend and guide with the RAZORS would not go, we followed them. Do not stay here unless everything else is booked!!! If you plan to tent camp, don't even try unless you want to float in human feces or bake in the sun. If there is a lot of rain in the forecast, one would think you'd pump the septic before the rain & not after. Most RV sites are downhill from the septic & tent sites are in the leech field. If you do stay, I hope your trip won't be as "crappy" as ours was. Smell ya later RSR. read more

Fantastic Place To Stay In The Black Hills! We camped out there for three night and stayed in one of there rooms for two nights. And our stay there was fantastic! The campgrounds were great for tent camping and the rooms were clean and the beds made for a great night sleep. Brett and Stephanie Marlette were great host and went out of there way to make us feel at home! I love this place! read more

Rented ATV's here and got some excellent advice on some local trails. They also have all the gear you'll need (snow pant, jackets, etc. if it happens to be cold). We went the day before it snowed, and it had been raining the day before we went - so it was cold and muddy. That actually made for a really fun time. When we got back, we ate at the cafe there. Have the Bacon cheese burger, it's really delicious. Their spiral fries were like none I'd ever had (think spiral steak fry) and were great. Service was great for everything. If your in the area, give these folks a shot and you won't be disappointed. read more

Recently I had the worst accommodations and shockingly poor customer service that I have ever experienced. When I arrived at the Recreational Springs Resort lodge I was issued a very dated room with no working air conditioning. I unloaded my things not realizing that it was not cooling the room. The toilet was also loose in room 12 allowing raw sewage to seep out the base on the floor. After about an hour of waiting for the room to cool down I went to the office for the 2nd time and was moved to room 13. It was a little trouble to repack my items and move rooms but I am not much of a complainer so I remained polite and understanding. I took a shower to clean off the sweat that was burning a recent area that a surgery had been done with fresh stiches. I noticed that the drain in the shower was very slow. During my short shower it was up to my ankles. When I rent a room it definitely bothers me to be standing in ankle deep water that is backing up from something from prior customers. Of course I imagine the worst. However I again went to the office and mentioned it to the a staff member Anita before meeting with a large crowd of friends that were also staying in the camping area and rooms. The next morning when I went to by a bag of ice. The same staff member asked in a sarcastic way if the air conditioning was working good enough and if my shower drain was working good enough for me, as if I had been overly picky. To which I answered "yes mam thank you so much". I was actually just fine with things through all of that , and excited to be in South Dakota enjoying my vacation. We experienced a down poor of rain and hail mid-day Friday and lost power. My friends and I were waiting for the power to come on. We had a small above ground propane burning fire that we were all around. I tried to contact the resort by phone and email. I found the phone mail to be full and I couldn't leave a message. I also emailed the resort. A lodge employee pulled up friday night a began to yell at us for having the small propane burner and threatened to call the sherriff on the majority of customers that were staying in the RV sites and motel. I am on a Bipap machine for sleep apnea. My sleep apnea is a very serious problem. Without the Bipap machine it is very dangerous for me to sleep. When I asked Anita what I could do about this medical issue at about 9pm Friday night, I was told to find another place to stay. I was beside myself at the lack of hospitality I received. At that point I returned to my cave like pich black room and took a completely cold shower by the light of my phone which shortly ran out of power and I had no way to charge it. I was forced to pack up all my stuff into my truck late Friday night. I was fortunate enough to have a small flashlight in my truck to pack up my stuff. The staff was threatening us by calling the police instead of helping her customers. She didn't offer me a battery, generator, glowstick, or even a candle, she just yelled at me from inside her truck. Even making me feel guilty that she was forced to drive from her home to yell at our group. Moments after that she sped off leaving us back in the dark. This was the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. I am very upset about the resort putting my safety at risk as I pressed on friday night looking for a place to spend the night. I found myself dozing off many times at the wheel nearly wrecking my truck and trailer. I never found a place to stay that Friday night traveling through east Wyoming. I finally fell asleep in my truck until I stopped breathing and workup in a panic with chest pains that lasted almost as long as the 4 days that it took Recreational springs resort to respond to my email about what to do about my medical condition that same Friday night. I have reached out to Recreational Springs Resort about this terrible experience. I was only answered with nasty comments and complete resistance even with many pictures that she asked me to send her. Thank you for absolutely nothing. Not even a candle.  Tom read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. We rented a 4-seater Side by Side and had a blast. All the trails were marked and the owner gave us some ideas on where to go. We actually got upgraded to a nicer cabin, no reason they just decided to do that when we got there. The cabin was very nice, no TV but we didn't need it. We had two double beds and a double up above in a loft, plus a nice size refrigerator and microwave. A nice place to stay if you want to enjoy the Black Hills National Forest! read more

What a sham! Rude staff, gross bathroom/shower facilities, and exposed wiring to plug into. I am sad that a place so close to local tourism would provide such a bad taste in anyone's memories. Since new ownership seemed to pop up in 2017-it is literally downhill. Food and drink is overpriced and not good. You better gas up 5 miles down the road, especially if you rent a unit-gas there is double the price in Lead. When facilities were flooded and runoff at the sinks, they would not even except help, but chose to let it run and flood for two more days. The manager is a she dragon and could use lots of education on customer service. The trails were all dead ends and washouts of 2 feet, you have to travel over 10 miles to find a decent trail to ride. We rented great sleds from them. Were better than our personal ones. One of those broke down and we called back. Rec springs owner came and towed personal sled back for us and didn't even charge us. Unbelievably nice! We had to cancel on reservation at trails head and they charged us $300!! Difference between nice guys and crooks! read more

Since the new owners purchased this in December of 2013, the place is wonderful. They purchased all new sleds, renovated the rooms with new furniture, beds, floors, paint etc, and updated and personalized the restaurant with home made special recipes. The restaurant is awesome and oh the prime rib, never had better, even in a high end steak house. Just mouth watering:) The wings are great and you have to try the Lahvosh with Rec sauce. Besides the renovations, the young family and their two adorable boys are simply precious. They truly care about your comfort and treat you like family. We will be going there at least 2 times a year now that this beautiful family took over. read more

Made reservations 3 months prior. No email, no confirmation .... Showed up for a wedding and a person was already parked in the spot. The lady didn't deal to care, and the sites m-p all are down wind from the camps sewer! Unless the doors where closed you smelled the entire camps waste. The water pressure was so bad the entire wedding party (8 rvs) had to fill their tanks and use their own water pumps. The inside lobby was nice, beer was cheap, and the wedding was Nicely done by the staff. The cabins were old and smelly. Basic plywood build nothing cabin feeling about the place. It's appearance they spend most of their water pressure on washing Atvs and side by sides! Don't waste ur money. read more

we rent sleds from them over the Christmas/New Years Week. Sleds were good, The reverse on one of the sleds stopped working right at the end of the day and when brought to their attention they really did not seem to care. They seemed to have a lot of miles on them for "being new" but we had fun and it all worked out. BIGGEST BEEF is the fact that they charge my card for the 20% nonrefundable on the day that we made our reservation but then on the day that we went snowmobiling they charge the entire purchase amount again to my card. No one will pick up the phone, they seem like they are just winging it. read more

Got there around 10am and had to wait 45 minutes for our atv to be cleaned. Stepped into a soaked 4 person atv. Were told we could use roads to get between trails. Returned atv to a extremely rude manager (Laurie) yelling at us for something we were told we could do. There are many other options in the hills & I would stay clear of RSR for atv rentals. read more

Terrible customer service. I reached out to Recreational springs to book for our wedding, I called three times, messaged them on Facebook, and e-mailed them. I was told after 5 days of not hearing back that they would get in touch with me. The next day I still hadn't heard anything, they e-mailed me saying that they had called me twice and left voicemails and had e-mailed me. However, I had NO missed called/voicemails, no e-mails and nothing in my junk folder indicating that they had tried to contact me. Once I did finally hear from them, I quickly e-mailed back hoping that from here on out the responsiveness would be better..... days went by still nothing. I e-mailed them again telling them we'd like to book our wedding... nothing. Just a fair warning for anything looking into booking their wedding or reservations with them you should look elsewhere with better customer service and responsiveness. I e-mailed them and let them know that we would no longer be booking with them due to their customer service and of course.. radio silence. I don't understand business's that you are trying to pay... don't care enough about their business to simply call or e-mail you. I hope no one else has to deal with this. To all the brides interested, it's not worth your time, we ended up booking with Black Hills Adventure Lodging and have had a great experience! Glad we chose to spend our money elsewhere! read more

What a wreck! Rented 4 snow mobiles. All 4 broke down and had to be rescued. Good news is if you call 12 times they will answer and send someone within a day. This place shouldn't be allowed to rent sleds as they are a safety risk. read more

Yikes, I made a reservation by phone a couple of days ago, because I could not get anything to work on the website. Today, a large charge, phone order through a clothing retailer, was attempted (denied, by the way) on that card number. It is a chip card and I have not heard of any other retailers being hacked these days. This is very suspicious. Very sad. I'd rather not stay there now, but we are stuck. read more

I felt like I got swindled in a shell game. After spening over $700 with rec springs we were overcharged for snowmobile rentals from the price on the internet ($90 difference). When i asked why the owner said it's because I called it in instead of making reservations online. When I showed her the online add it said "call for reservations". Then her excuse was that their rates are like hotel rates where prices go up and down. Then I explained that the price on their ad had been the same for 8 weeks her husband told me "she can charge whatever price she wants". Next she said "even at the higher rate we are still cheaper than our competitors" It took about 20 minutes of arguing and she finally threw the money at me. The other employees were excellent, .especially the snowmobile manager. Last time we rented at spearfish canyon lodge...will go back there next year. I cancelled my credit card after this altercation to make sure they didn't add more bogus charges. Never done that before in 30 years of travel all over the world. Ugh. read more

Horrible experience. Recreational Springs should not be trying to take credit on their Facebook page for a recent wedding! The food was catered in and a wedding planner was responsible for the decorating & set up with help from family & friends. They charge $5 for a small bag of ice ($1.69 in Lead which is 5 minutes away) $1 for a 12oz bottle of water and $18 for a 6 pack of beer. They will sell you a s'mores package at for a ridiculous price & $1 for each piece of firewood and then tell you can't have a fire during the event because it's a liability risk. The employees try to be helpful but that will be immediately shut down if noticed by the owners. In other words customer service is not in their contract...and watch out for that contract. I must have heard that 20 times in one evening. And yes the contract is true.....they will threaten to call the Sheriff! Beware if you should have a complaint. You will be a target for your entire stay as well as receive a $500 fine. The only thing they can take credit for is owing money on a beautiful setting which was created by Mother Nature not them...which of course comes at outrageous cost for the use of. Watch out for bugs in the bed. Dead flies all over the floor, microwave stand, in the window sills and somebody else's clumps of hair in your newly rented sleeping accommodation. Just clean it yourself instead of complaining. Oh and god forbid to ask for a elderly friendly room (ya know one easier for a old person to get to) especially if they do have one available (so the nice employee said).....cause the owner will say "you can have room 23 but you will have to pay for both because I will not refund your money"...nope not even an exchange for higher the priced one. we had a great time. employees were very friendley and helpful. kayla, casey, gene, and darren were fantastic. possibly the most friendly was benelli the dog, he greated us and kept us company when we were in the lodge. the motel room was very clean and up to date. the bed linens were new or almost new and the bed very comfortable. the artic cat snowmobiles were nearly new and in very nice condition, we had no problems. darren took them in at night, cleaned and filled them with fuel at the end of the day and brought them out every morning ready to go. the trails were well marked and in good condition. the rental clothing and helmets kept us warm and comfy in the single digit weather. i would recommend recreation springs resort and will return again. read more
