We sat outside in their outdoor dining space. The selection is quite good. We ordered Barbecue Buffalo Wings, Creole Soul Chicken, and Sizzling Pepper Steak Platter. The Buffalo Wings were on point. Had an amazing experience, being served by Leslie and Tanner. Very warm, welcoming, and friendly atmosphere. Makes you feel like you're eating at a friend's house. I ordered the vegan Spicy Chicken with Broccoli over brown rice. It was delicious and well portioned. It can be hard to find a restaurant that does vegan proteins well, and this place surprised me with how well they prepare and cook their food. Honestly, I don't understand how anyone could rate this place more than two stars. The vegetable tempura had five times as much batter than actual vegetables. The collard green spring rolls were arguably passable, but all of the vegetables in all of the other dishes were obviously undercooked. We ordered a ton of food, and the speed with which it all came out hints that everything was just thrown together. Meanwhile, everyone who worked there seemed to have a very crappy attitude, and fake smiles. If you were literally starving, and you needed vegan food, maybe you could go there in an emergency, but never again for any other reason. We were looking for dinner in the area before a comedy show and chose Red Bamboo based off of reviews. They don't take reservations and there was a 30 minutes wait at 6pm on a Saturday. We went to a nearby bar to wait until we were called. The host was extremely nice and helpful. The staff was great all around! The inside is comfortable, well lit and spaced out/arranged. They have a specific gluten-free menu if you ask for it, which was great because one person in our party is gf and that gave them a peace of mind. The regular menu is quite extensive and we were overwhelmed with choosing. The menu is overall a mix of Asian inspired dishes and soul or comfort food. Our waitress let us know that the first few options in each category were the most popular so we used that guidance to narrow down our options. The server was also very helpful in providing recommendations. We tried the dragonfly dumplings to start and they were pretty good. We got the soul chicken sandwich, soul chicken plate, bamboo curry chicken, and teriyaki tofu. The soul chicken had a great seasoning on the breading and was our favorite. We would probably pass on the bamboo curry chicken next time. The portions were pretty big and we felt we could've gotten 3 plates for 4. A friend of mine brought me to the Red Bamboo to try the food. The place is pretty small and there are acrylic barriers between most of the tables. The staff is very inviting and knowledgeable about the menu offering up great options. We decided to go all in and like little greedy monsters opted for 4 appetizers and 2 entrees the 1st night. Yes, I returned 2 days later. Please don't judge me, let me do the judging. Appetizers 1. Asian dumplings- excellent! A must try. Great flavors. The cabbage, carrots and tofu are a great combo and came together well with the soy lime ginger dressing. The dumplings were firm, they didn't tear apart and definitely weren't mushy. My taste buds were pleasantly surprised. The salad bed was a pass because the dressing was a bit bitter. 2. chicken satay- this was also very good. The were perfectly grilled and seasoned. The peanut dressing was also a good match. 3. Fried zucchini and tofu- I'll pass on this next time. The fried zucchini was fine but the fried tofu was a no. I think it was a texture problem. It was more like a cream filling. I didn't like it at all. 4. Creole soul chicken- these are a great replication to chicken nuggets. They were crispy and perfectly fried. The batter didn't fall apart it was firm and gave a nice crunch. I recommend giving it a try. Main Course 1. Butterfly soy chops- this reminded me of the crispy nuggets. It wasn't as appealing to sight as it was to taste. It looked like cafeteria food. There were 2 chops with an ice cream scoop of mash potatoes with a dollop of gravy and collard greens. The potatoes were nothing to speak about and I didn't taste any garlic. The apple with raisins on top of the chops were a miss for me and that's because I dont like mixing fruit with my dinner. The chops were good. They were crispy and flavored really well. The collards weren't my collards and were just ok. 2. Spicy chicken with broccoli- this was good. The flavors were great. I wish it was a bit more spicy but overall the flavors were a hit. I took it to go because my stomach started to lose the battle and put up a full to capacity sign. Salad 1. Chicken caesar salad- this was really good. The croutons are made fresh. They were small crispy toasted and garlic flavored. I wish the lettuce was in strips instead of a whole leaf. The soy chicken was perfectly grilled. The biggest miss with the salad was the dressing. It taste great but should be placed on the side. It's my preference because it's a lot and makes the croutons soggy and I also feel a lot of sauce is hiding something. But this is a great salad and my server brought out another salad to make up for it. Wine 1. Rose- not my cup of tea. It was a bit sweet 2. Chardonnay - was a bit bitter and tart but it works 3. I feel like this place embodies the stereotypes people have about vegan food which is a shame because veggies can be so flavorful and delicious!! I remember loving this place a few years back because it offered so many options for vegans/vegetarians. I went back recently and remembered why I stopped going: the food lacks flavor, lacks seasoning, lacks care! I tried the roti canai which was pretty decent but very clearly store bought. The actually curry tasted like those curry flavor cubes mixed with water and the roti I recognized as the frozen kind you can find at any South Asian grocery store. The crab rangoon wasn't bad, it had a similar flavor but texture was a little too liquidly inside instead of creamy. The worst offender was one of the specials they had: the pasta Carbonara. I was really excited about this because I've never been able to try it. The actual tempeh bacon bits were fine but the pasta had no flavor whatsoever. No salt even. It tasted like noodles straight from the boiling water it was cooked in. I asked for some salt, pepper, and parmesan but they were going to charge me extra for the parmesan which I thought was annoying because it was already $16. I chose to send back the dish and get something else but the waitresses acted like I personally insulted them or something and didn't make it a very hospitable environment. I got the sizzling beef platter which also lacked flavor. It was super watery as the veggies weren't cooked down enough. You would think a vegan place would at least get their veggies right. Their fake chicken like in the creole soul chicken was pretty good. But the mash it came with, again lacked seasoning!! This place is super small and cramped where you can hear the next person's convo. Red Bamboo seems like a pretty popular place, and it definitely deserves that. The food is pretty solid. All of these dishes were pretty cheap for NYC, all under $20 and had good flavor. Barbeque Buffalo Wings ($15) - One of their popular appetizers and it's definitely delicious. I honestly think it's slightly pricey for how many pieces they give, but it makes up for it in flavor. I really think they nailed this, and the fact that it was vegan was amazing. Teriyaki Chicken Bowl ($15) - It's just a regular teriyaki bowl with vegan chicken, and the flavor is pretty standard teriyaki so nothing memorable, but I appreciated the vast amount of varying vegetables. A safe and solid dish. Eggplant Parmesan ($14) - This dish is exactly what it is, Chicken Parm, but with eggplant. The pieces were HUGE, so definitely worth the money. It has solid marinara flavor, and I do recommend trying this out if you like eggplants and chicken parmesan. Szechuan Beef ($15) - This is basically a stir fry of veggies and soy beef, and it had pretty decent Szechuan flavor. I'm a big fan of stir fries, so I thought this was pretty solid. However, I thought it was too oily. Not the worst stir fry, but it would've been better if it wasn't so oily. Overall, solid flavor and tasted good anyway. The service was really friendly, and I had no complaints with the staff. Food didn't take too long to come out, and every dish was pretty solid. I recently ate there with my teenage daughter and friend. This use to be such a good place and my passed reviews from long ago was great. I got the chicken ginger fried rice, the new thing that I did I try for the first time was the Portobello fritters. I posted photos of what everyone else got. When I ate it it was okay but nothing to rave about. The one thing I noticed about it was when I bit into it, it was like having a table spoon of oil. It was so greasy. But I didn't want to be picky so I ate it. My daughter also had some. After eating half she said she couldn't eat anymore. My friend didn't want to have any. We spoke about the food and how it has changed over the years. We also ordered wine and I paid the bill and went about my day. About 30 minutes later my i felt something wasn't right, my body felt weird, I was light headed and my stomach was turning. We walked about more and finally I had to go home because my stomach got worse. My friend was fine as she didn't eat much. I went home and crashed hoping it would feel better if I slept. My daughter had the runs all night. For me I didn't get proper sleep because my stomach felt like it was full of oil. The morning after I had the runs. Thank goodness because it was not a great experience feeling like that. They only got 1 star because the ginger pineapple juice is good. If I ever return it will only be for their carrot cake or juice nothing else. It's disappointing because this used to be my go to place in the village. We ordered delivery from here for the first time. Some items were really good, one just meh. The meh was the vegan crab Rangoon. The "ravioli" were crisp but the filling had no flavor. It had a comforting texture, but no salt, no acid, no umami, nothing. They're a hard pass for next time. On the other hand, the black bean ginger stir fry was smoky and tasty, even if it seemed to lack ginger. I'm not a fan of broccoli, but they cooked it so well I lapped it all down. Roti was good, but they should specify there's only one to an order. At 4.40, I expected more than one, the size and thickness of a crepe. An old school classic. I love coming here for lunch and getting the vegan cob salad with the grilled soy chicken. It's the best I've ever had. Their dressing combo with the blue cheese and vegan tempeh bacon is phenomenal. The menu is great because it's all very vegan protein focused, so you can get clean vegan protein options (like seitan, soy, etc.) with all of the dishes. They are also flexible and willing to customize the dishes to fit your dietary preferences. They also get their desserts from Vegan Treats (IYKYK) so all of the cakes are a 10/10. Too sweet for me plus they put lychees in it which was weird. The chicken was soggy by the time it got delivered (which is understandable) They do a good job packing things. They kept the veggies and chicken separate but the sauce. However it still came soggy. You couldn't tell me it wasnt real chicken. tasted just like the real deal. I also sampled the Vegan Szechuan Beef. This was also tasty and flavorful. The spring rolls were crunchy but just ok to munch on. The roti canai on the other hand was sooooo scrumptious. The roti was warm and flaky. The coconut curry sauce with the potato and vegan beef was so good and wholesome. I loved how my large deep bowl of garlic fried rice accommodated all the samples I mixed it with. For dessert, we had the Chocolate cake and the Coconut cake. I asked if there was any Carrot cake left but Jess our waitress said she had sold her last one before I sat down. The sadness on my face must have made an impression on her because after a while she brought me a little slice from the kitchen and said she was saving it for her husband but thought to give it to me since she always a bring home treats. The staff are really friendly there. Because it's so small, they are very responsive and quick to help you. The Southern Fried Chicken is awesome; it's my go-to. I've also had the Bamboo Curry Chicken, when in the mood for something with a flavor kick. If I feel like having a sandwich, I'll go with the Soul Chicken Sandwich with fries. It was a difficult decision but I ended up sharing the: Dragonfly Dumplings, Barbecue Buffalo Wings, Black Bean Ginger Stir Fry, and Sausage Sliders with Bacon and Guac. The Sausage Sliders were a "miss" for me. There was hardly any guac and the texture of the sausage wasn't super appealing. The Black Bean Stir Fry wasn't a unique vegan offering but I liked that they didn't skimp on vegetables. My two favorite dishes were the bbq buffalo wings and the dragonfly dumplings. The dumplings were fried and crispy on the outside and sooo plump. I loved the texture of the wings. It had a very similar texture to real duck meat. Overall, I had a satisfying meal and left super full. I didn't miss real meat at all. Service was also prompt but unobtrusive. The soy chicken is placed on a bed of greens and under the chicken was raw mushrooms which kind of threw me off. The collard greens are sautéed so do not expect the home cooked down-south version of collard greens. They were too crunchy for me and could have used more flavor. They had like this salty after taste which overrode whatever flavor they did use. Overall the food was decent. I expected something different based on the rave reviews this place gets.
