This place is okay. My friend's bourbon fake chicken was good. It was better than my black bean veggies. The black bean dish was so incredibly overseasoned I did not want to eat it at all. It's like they just put a big scoop of black bean sauce and sauteed everything in it which is probably exactly what they did. It tasted like just pure salt water. It was truly one of the saltiest thing I have ever tasted. I didn't wana make a fuss so just ate a little and then left. On the other hand the fake chicken dishes seems to be the forte of this vegan establishment. The bourbon chicken was surprisingly not as salty and was decent. Seemed like everyone else was getting one variant or another of the fake meat dishes. The servers were fine except I was trying to pay and my server was just hiding in the corner towards the kitchen texting the whole time for good ten, fifteen minutes not even looking up. This was genuinely one of the wackiest meals I ever experienced. I ordered the creole southern chicken and was served a plate of chicken nuggets and UNSEASONED vegetablesI was so sad to pay $25 or sum for that mess. This is a great vegan/vegetarian option close to Washington Square Park. I am not vegetarian or vegan, but I came here with my family who all seemed to really enjoy this spot. I ordered the coconut chicken and a fresh ginger juice. The flavor and texture of the meatless coconut chicken was so good and it had a great tasting dipping sauce on the side. Came here with friends a while back; we wanted to accommodate a vegetarian friend and this place looked like it was worth a try. Menu was extensive with a lot of interesting options. I opted to try the Dante's cuisine (black pepper soy beef medallions with a side of asparagus, yellow squash, zucchini, and garlic mashed potatoes) - it was flavorful and while I wouldn't say it tasted like beef, it does have that meaty texture. The side vegetables were fresh and delicious. My friends tried the butterfly soy chops and other variations of vegan chicken and beef. They thought the chicken and the pork chops were more similar imitations to the real thing than the beef. None of the dishes had any major faults. Service was friendly. The restaurant itself is pretty small so the seating felt cramped, but it's still a pretty nice place to try some vegan food. read more

I've been eyeing this spot for the longest time and finally decided to try it yesterday but I have to admit, it wasn't my favorite... it is a bit on the pricier side as well.. id like to preface this review by saying even though I did not enjoy my meal here, it did have quite a number of people dining in! The crab rangoons were 12 dollars for a couple (I believe it was 6 pieces?), definitely on the pricier side. They were quite bland and mildly crispy crab rangoons. Not exactly my favorite. I've been craving crab Rangoons for the longest time (bc of tiktok haha) so this was a bit of a let down. There wasnt much of a flavor and had a semi soggy, chewy and hard type of crunch. The filling was very bland and did not resemble the crab Rangoon taste :( I also got the fried chicken sandwich as well but it was quite dry and bready. The chicken* nuggets in the sandwich were nice and tasty but the sandwich overall was missing fresh vegetables, sauce, and spice. It had a piece of sadly limp wilted lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a smear of mayo. It had so much more bread than filling so the ratio of bread to filing was not exactly ideal for me. The fries that came with the sandwich were really good though! Super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, seasoned to perfection. The fries really pulled though, so yummy. The cake was ok. Nothing really worth mentioning but would definitely satisfy your sweet tooth/ craving! I'm overall pretty disappointed because I've wanted to try this place for the longest time and am sad to say I didn't enjoy my meal here. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? Or maybe it was just a bad day? Who knows.. But based on what I had yesterday, this place wasn't too great and kind of overpriced for me. I sadly have to say I wouldn't recommend this place and probably would not come back... if anyone has a recommendation what to order then I'd love to hear it and give this place another try! I ordered the Dante's cuisine which is a very good option! Order this if you are unsure. The "beef" tasted like real beef and the veggies that came along with the entree was so good. This place has been a vegetarian staple in NYC for as long as I have been living here, and was one of my first stops when I was exploring vegan food. The food is consistently delicious and the menu is huge. Service is always good and friendly and it's a fun place to go eat. Sadly, though, they still insist on serving animal products, in spite of the word "vegan" boldly included in all of their branding. It's a little bit mysterious which items are actually vegan, so definitely your server. A few years ago I went regularly to get a particular burger without realizing it wasn't vegan. I got it a number of times before I realized it contained dairy. Not the end of the world, but it would be nice to go to a place with "vegan" in the name and not have to ask a million questions about which things are actually vegan. It's confounding that they don't just go ahead and make the menu vegan and simplify this for everyone, or at the very least remain true to their branding. Okay. Off my soapbox. I can't quit this place, it seems. It's a great place to take nervous omnivores who want to try something vegan. It's all food they will recognize and it's absolutely delicious. Boy, this place..... there are never enough words. The thing is: if you come at dinner or lunch, come here with time. I don't think they make reservations so you'll probably gonna enter, give your name to the host and they will call you when your table is ready. It does get busy on those times. But the restaurant is always open so if you got time in the middle of the afternoon you're gonna be seated when you enter. It's a pretty small restaurant, I went to their website once and found out it's open since 2002, and apparently never lost their taste. Since I've come to NYC I started looking for vegan restaurants; I'm not the type that digs or needs to eat healthy/raw vegan good, I'm the type who likes to eat very well seasoned and options that are creative. And asian vegan restaurants most of the time really fills that for me. So put this in your mind. Red Bamboo was the first I went to, and ever since when a friend wants to eat out I always recommend it. Most of the time I order- The Cajun Fried Shrimp: it's crispy and well seasoned. Didn't amaze me tho. Popcorn Shrimp: the texture reminds me of shrimp nd it's well-fried and crunchy. It's less crispy than the Fried shrimp. It's soft. Bamburger: it's simple and full of flavor. The texture is "meaty" and succulent and it's really filling. Barbecue Buffalo Wings: it's almost a sin to eat those wings and not remember them for the rest of your life. The wings are probably what they're most famous for, and you can see why the moment you take a bite. They are 5 mock chicken meat in a stick (probably made from soy and gluten), with a crunchy outside and VERY spiced buffalo sauce. The sauce is shiny and flavorful and the meat is not bland at all. It does remind a lil bit of a chicken taste but it's even better than meat. The outside is really tasty and the vegan sauce really cuts the spice. I recommend it so much. I also got one time the Sesame Beef, which is very filling, full of vegetables and comes with rice. But I do preffer to eat starters or smaller dishes, that's just me.. Well, It's not cheap at all. But it's a restaurant that you can taste the time and attention in the food. The service is good, staff is friendly. I recommend coming in the "quiet hours", the busy ones will be crowded and noisy, I don't mind it at all, but just to warn you. Not going to lie, was more than a little bit excited to grab a bite to eat here a little after the prime lunching hours. But once again my lofty expectations were my downfall . . . We opted to order off the lunch menu, with my friend selecting the BBQ Buffalo Wings and I settled upon the Soul Chicken Sandwich, after inquiring with our server about popular dishes. My friend's BBQ Buffalo Wings arrived rather quickly and she indicated they "were all right," which didn't instill much confidence in my somewhat delayed chicken sandwich. Upon arrival, I peeked inside and it seems the "chicken" comprises of faux chicken nuggets (taste and texture similar to Gardein). It wasn't awful, quite edible in fact, but dare I say, underwhelming. I am under the impression that we should have ordered off the regular all day menu, as it seemed chockfull with all sorts of vegan wonder, but what can I say? We panicked and gravitated towards the parsed down drab lunch menu. Ah well! My friend also ordered a Quinoa with Sautéed Vegetables side and it was a tad bland, but a rather generous heaping of the stuff. We shared a carrot cake slice at for dessert and we both agreed that it was likely the best part of the meal. It was the perfect balance of dense and sweet. My friend was quite impressed with the cream cheese frosting being that her omnivore carrot-cake-snob self has sampled carrot cake (vegan and not) from all across the country. Firstly this is coming from a non-vegan. My bf is a vegan and we found this place during our NYC stay. We ordered through Grubhub and was not a bit disappointed. The menu is HUGE!!!! I absolutely LOVE this place! A great friend introduced me to this delicious Vegan/Vegetarian gem last December. I was preparing for my big move to NYC in the Spring, so I was happy to try something different. Red Bamboo did not disappoint. The Chicken Satay, Dante's Cuisine, and Southern Fried Chicken are among my favorites, but there are so many other delicious dishes to try! They also make a very tasty Pineapple, Lemon, and Ginger drink, which I prefer hot. The Caramel Cake is good, but the gorgeous art canvas of the legendary Ms. Billie Holiday was the real treat! I liked it so much, I bought a similar piece for my new place. I finally moved to Brooklyn in March 2019, but work in the city. Not disgusting but Meh I've experienced better. This place is listed as "soul food/vegan" which seems amazing and not something you see often in NYC but unfortunately isn't vegan soul food. Instead it's just another boring vegan place. The place is busy which is always a good thing. 30 minute wait to get a table on a Friday night. Fun music and decent decor. Clean bathrooms. All that stuff is great but there's just one flaw. The food. I had the Philly Cheesesteak and my other half had the Ginger Beef. The sandwich wasn't all that great. The "meat" was fine but there was some sort of sauce in the sandwich which didn't have anything to do with a typical cheesesteak. Ketchup? Barbecue sauce? Wasn't sure. The ginger beef dish was also a disappointment. Once again the "meat" was great and had good texture but the dish had no real flavor. The thing that got me with this dish was the crinkle cut vegetables. Are they canned? And where is the ginger in this dish? Came here with a friend who is vegetarian on a weekday evening and waited about 20 minutes to be seated. Food came quickly but I must warn you this place gets LOUD. It must be from the low ceilings or something, as I could barely hold a conversation. We got the Seoul Pancakes and Caribbean Jerk Spiced Seitan for starters, then the Eggplant Parmesan to share along with the Broccoli Mashed Potatoes and Onion Rings. I liked the Seitan skewers, but found the pancakes to be too mushy. My friend and I felt like the addition of sweet peppers in the pancakes overwhelmed the taste. The eggplant parm was great, but the accompanying pieces of garlic toast were tiny, stale and cold. I definitely don't think I tried the right things coming here for the first time last night. I was originally going to go to Delice and Sarrasin, but forgot to make a reservation and Red Bamboo was nearby and was also highly rated. We were seated squeezed between two other parties of two, but separated by the plastic barriers. Felt a little tight for sure, but not the end of the world. I ordered the Tonkatsu Chops, as I wanted to try their veganized version of a Japanese food classic. Honestly, it was disappointing. The fried seitan tasted okay, had the usual seitan texture, but was not crispy at all despite being described as deep fried. Tonkatsu is usually breaded with panko, but this was not. The sauce was also not as sweet as I remember, definitely leaning sour. The steamed veggies were just steamed veggies-- I like vegetables, so I ate them. The worst offender, however, was the mashed potatoes. They were a weird mealy texture, but they also tasted strongly of vanilla. I think the milk used in the potatoes and especially the gravy had vanilla in it? Altogether unpleasant. On the other hand, my boyfriend ordered a spicy beef curry which was quite tasty. There was plenty of curry sauce, not super spicy but just enough to be piquant, well cooked veggies, and the beef even "slightly reminiscent of real meat," according to my omnivore bf. :) I'd probably get that next time I come, which hopefully I will be, since there are so many menu options to choose from. read more

My wife and I have visited this Greenwich Village institution on many occasions and always enjoy ourselves! Located on 4th street off the western edge of Washington Square Park, this restaurant offers vegetarian fare that even the most carnivorous appetites will enjoy! The entrees are intended to replicate the texture, smell and taste of southern comfort foods. I typically order the butterfly pork chops with mashed potatoes. The breading and texture of these "chops" is on par with their meat counterpart sans cholesterol regret. The restaurant is located on the lower level and provides for a cozy atmosphere. A few tables closely hug the interior walls. Service is also friendly and genuinely appreciative of your business. Our most recent order was delivery via UberEats and diners will revel in the fact that the food arrived hot and as delicious as in the restaurant setting. I might also add that this was the single quickest delivery I have ever received. I believe a total of 20 minutes from completion of order to delivery--simply outstanding. Our meals were carefully packaged with all of the necessary fixings to ensure a most-excellent dining experience. As per usual, I order the butterfly chops while my wife ordered the sweet and sour "chicken." Both entrees were excellent and captured the flavor and essence of their inspired fauna derived relatives. Vegetarian spot. I was prepared to give this place a glowing review because I've eaten here a couple times before and loved it but that was a few years ago... I ordered the Creole fried chicken meal, which was actually more like chicken nuggets (made out of soy products) with Creole spices and rosemary. They tasted okay and I liked the crunchiness but nuggets are not what I think of when I order something that is described as fried chicken. It came with garlic mashed potatoes, which were really not flavorful or garlic-y. There was some weird tasting dark sauce on it. There were also vegetables: Carrots that were huge and not really cooked; squash etc. I expected SOO much better. I only ate about half of it, but that was more than enough... I went home with a stomach ache that lasted for approximately 6 hours and finally threw up (I'm sorry I know that's disgusting, but I want to be totally honest here). After that, I felt somewhat better at least. I had taken the other half of the meal home with me but after the reaction I had from it, I had to throw it away (even though I hate wasting food). My husband and I order Postmates from Red Bamboo all the time. Its one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always great and they have such a varied menu. Last night we ordered from Postmates and the restaurant called to let us know the delivery person forgot one of our bags. They felt terrible and the owner herself biked over with it. We are all the way over on the east side and the restaurant is on the west side. If we didn't order through Postmates, I highly doubt we would be within their delivery zone. The fact that the owner took the time to deliver our food really meant a lot. And as if biking the food over personally wasn't enough, she also threw in a free tiramisu as an apology. Ordered from here a few days ago and thought the food was okay. I recently had some dental work, so I have been forced to eat soft foods. That said, I opted for the mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were pretty good. They come with gravy, but I'm glad I ordered extra gravy on the side. There definitely wasn't enough in the single serving. There was a good amount of flavor but it didn't really stand out to me. Sad to report the mac & cheese was pretty bland. There wasn't enough flavor so I had to season it myself at home. Love Red Bamboo! Pros: * Although they don't take reservations, we didn't wait at all when my girlfriend and arrived at 7:30 on a Wednesday night. * Small but charming space- it's intimate and perfect for a group of 4 people max. * Friendly and fast service * The food here is deceivingly delicious and leaves you wanting to return to try more! I am a meat-lover, and when I bit into the a nugget of Creole Soul Chicken (panko breaded soy chicken with cajun and rosemary seasoning), it tasted like a juicy succulent chicken nugget! My friend also loved her Black Bean Ginger Stir Fry (fresh garden vegetables sauteed in a cantonese black bean sauce and chili ginger glaze with a side of brown or white rice). Cons: * The sound acoustics worsen as Red Bamboo gets packed- it became difficult to carry a conversation with my friend that I had to shout or repeat myself a lot * The steamed carrots, yellow squash and zucchini that came with the Creole Soul Chicken were bland and flavorless- wish they stir-fried it in some kind of sauce. The Perfect Place for the Manhattan Vegan! While visiting NYC last month, I was determined to find some of the best vegan spots in the city. It's no surprise that this city would have some superior vegan places, but the best one that I visited was Red Bamboo in Manhattan. Suggested by a friend, I wasn't initially sold on checking it out. It was my first time in New York, and the timing had to be perfect. After a failed attempt to spend the afternoon in Brooklyn, I regrouped and took an Uber to RB. The options are endless. When I returned to my hotel after Brooklyn, I browsed the menu in anticipation. Much of the menu is inspired by Asian fare, but they had many items that I would consider vegan pub food: burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers. In fact, the most popular item on the menu is undoubtedly their barbecue wings, which I unfortunately didn't try. However, it's on the agenda for my next NYC trip! I wanted to go with a more Asian inspired meal. For starters, I ordered the Crab Rangoon: deep-fried wontons filled with shredded soy crab, scallions, and vegan cheese. They were served with sweet chili dipping sauce. My main course was Sesame Beef: grilled soy beef strips topped with sesame seeds and a side of steamed carrots, snow peas, broccoli, and a side of white or brown rice. Red Bamboo also has a very solid beer selection, ranging from imported to craft beer. I enjoyed a few libations while getting my vegan on! As far as prices, I would consider RB fairly reasonable for Manhattan. Their vegan burger starts at seven dollars, and most of the entrees are in the mid to low teens. However, with app and two beers, my tab was nearly forty bucks. Live a little, people! I am in love. Red Bamboo might be worked into every NYC trip. read more
