The place is small so the tables are intimate but that adds to the ambiance. Our server was super friendly and professional and helped explain the menu to us. We got a variety of appetizers including coconut "chicken", spring rolls and fried zucchini slices (my fave). For my entree, I just ordered an appetizer portion of the "chicken" satay. Everything tasted really good! I don't eat at a lot of vegan places so I'm not clear on whether or not people who are vegan like eating things that are designed to mimic meat so that made for an odd sensation of eating something that was similar in taste and texture to a meat dish. Highly recommend you visit this vegan spot. Some of the best vegan food around. The Cajun fried shrimp and chicken are my absolute favorite. Not greasy at all and so flavorful. The drumsticks are good as well. The curries also taste authentic. They have changed their menu a bit over the years, but still have some good classics. My wife and I stopped by Red Bamboo on a recent trip to NYC to visit our daughter. We had a reservation at Third Kingdom but we were running late -- we were walking from Washington Square Park, it was snowing, and we were famished. We walked by Red Bamboo and decided to cancel our reservation at Third Kingdom and drop in. No problem getting a table that frosty evening. While the food isn't top tier like you'd get at Planta or Ladybird, it hit the spot. The menu is huge -- chockfull of 100% vegan food options -- so we ordered lots of different things to share. We ended up with everyting from buffalo wings to crab rangoon to bbq ribs to some sort of curry. Everything was tasty and prepared well. This is a definite stop for ANY vegan (or non-vegan, for that matter) in NYC. I would love to spend more time working my way through everything on that menu! read more

Red Bamboo is one of the many tiny ground floor/basement level restaurants lining the streets around NYU. It's a vegan restaurant and one day before class I stopped by on a whim. It was lunchtime, and when I walked in, I was the only person in the restaurant, but as I had my meal, more people started streaming in. Everyone who dined in was doing so alone, which I thought was interesting. There was only one person working the entire front of house and she was really nice and accommodating. In an attempt to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, I've been trying to eat more meals that are plant-based. In general, vegetarian food in the city has gotten a lot better than the last time I tried it a decade ago. But Red Bamboo brought back much of that bitter nostalgia. I mean, just look at these pictures. This is like, college cafeteria food, but for $15-20 a plate. It's on us that the two dishes we ordered were essentially fried pucks - I suppose I could differentiate between the fried "Creole chicken" and the fried "Tonkatsu chop," but it was mostly by texture. The sauces were abysmal - I was especially offended by the A1 steak sauce they offered with the Tonkatsu Chop instead of, you know, something that actually tasted like tonkatsu sauce. But it's one thing to have plant-based "meat" not taste fantastic, it's another for a vegetarian restaurant to not even have fresh plant-based plants. Vegetables and mashed potatoes definitely came from freezer bags. Service staff were nice and looked like they're doing their best. This is an all vegan restaurant with a huge menu. We came for lunch on a Sunday. Our waitress was quite cold and impersonal. The menu featured popular meat dishes recreated with soy meat. It's a noble cause, but I'd say it's more for folks who are trying to be plant-based, but miss the taste of meat. It was not particularly vegetable-forward or creative. To start, we had the buffalo chicken wings. They had a slight crispness on the outside which I appreciated, but the soy meat was very dense and hard to cut through. I wouldn't recommend this dish. We also got the crab ragoon which was tasty. The fried dough shells were nice and crispy and the cream cheese filling was flavorful. For my main, I got the sweet and sour chicken. Compared to the buffalo wings, this chicken was a lot more tender. The sauce was tasty and paired well with the veggies and rice. But still, it was a lot of blobs of soy, which overwhelmed the dish. My partner and his mom got the fried rice and southern fried chicken and the portion sizes were huge. To drink, I had the juice with apple, lemon, and ginger. I ordered the Teriyaki Vegetable Stir Fry and added tofu for $4 for a total of $19.00. I honestly cannot imagine paying $15 for frozen vegetables. Here's the menu description: Zucchini, mushrooms, broccoli, squash, carrots and cauliflower sautéed in a sweet teriyaki glaze. Check out my pictures and let me know if the teriyaki "glaze" looks appetizing to you. It was a literal puddle of water w a splash of sauce. It was apparent the vegetables were either previously frozen or wayyy over steamed and let out all their water which mixed with the sauce. Totally unappealing and inedible. Very disappointed. Vegan food can always be a hit or miss for me, and this time was a miss. The place was pretty empty despite it being a weekend lunch hour. We originally wanted to sit at another 4 table setting, but was told to sit squished next to another party instead, who had to move out of Covid consciousness. Normally I'm fine with us not able to choose our seats, but there were only around 3 other parties at the time dining. The menu was extensive! I was excited at first by the options, only to realize the dishes were nothing special. The appetizers were probably our faves if we had to choose. I personally enjoyed the Almond Coconut Chicken ($12), which had so much body. I thought I'd be biting into a soft fried substance, but I loved the slight resistance every bite gave. The coconut shreds inside gave them a unique fragrant taste as well, not to mention dipped in a delicious sweet chili sauce that went along well! The Crab Rangoon ($12) tasted like a familiar fried Chinese scallion wonton. They were airer than I thought, but nonetheless heaty! The Mac n Cheese ($14) was noted by my friend of having a candy aftertaste. And after she said it, I could not shake this watermelon Jolly Rancher flavor out of my mind. Other than that, the mac n cheese had a decent consistency. The Black Bean Ginger Stir Fry ($15) was a bigger miss. They really went ham on the black beans. It tastes really artificial if you're into that type of taste. My friends who are more open to trying new foods than me had the same thoughts so def not the odd one out here! Red Bamboo was actually my first introduction to vegan restaurants some 5 or so years ago. This place has been in business for quite some time, and it's clear why: they serve up good vegan comfort food. The restaurant is TINY, so I usually prefer a carryout order. They have a selection of beer and wine, although I wish they offered cocktails. Ever since I've been coming to Red Bamboo, I pretty much continue to get the same things (because they are just so dang good): -BBQ Buffalo Wings: legendary and a must-order. -Asian Dumplings (the green ones): so flavorful and that dough is just delish! -Sweet Potato & Broccoli Tempura: more like a panko breading, which I really like. I was able to do the vegan spice Olympics, which is the challenge from the show the hot ones. It came with 5 wings and a milkshake that was delicious. We ordered the roti canai (very tasty, probably my favorite), the beef curry (yummy with a delicate broth, the texture of the vegan beef was incredible) and the Indian chicken curry (my least fave because I'm picky about Indian curries but it was a decent Americanized version, it didn't have the punchy flavors and spices I was hoping for but I did like the vegan chicken). Honey, I am so happy I did because I was pleasantly surprised with my meal selections. I am no where anybody's vegetarian, however, I did cut off red meat and pork and that's about as close as I will get to becoming a vegetarian for now, LOL. It was a cold day in NYC and I sat at the one table they had out for outdoor dining to decide what I wanted to order. I ordered and paid from my phone and just waited for pick up which was about 15 minutes wait. I literally remembering going back and forth about what I wanted to order. I decided to try two different entrees, an appetizer and a dessert because everything looked great, LOL #greedygal I ordered spring rolls which were vegan rolls filled with cabbage, carrots and mushroom and served with vegan duck sauce and very tasty. My first entree was the barbecue ribs that were Flame-grilled soy strips served with a side of steamed carrots, broccoli, snap peas, garlic mashed potatoes and gravy. I ate this for lunch as soon as I got home and couldn't believe I wasn't eating real ribs. Remember, I gave up that other red meat and devoured these rib like soy strips. LOL They were soo good and I wished I had more sauce for the ribs. One thing I liked most about the meal is I didn't feel heavy and bloated after I ate. For dinner, I ate just a little of my 2nd entree because I wasn't that hungry. I ordered strips of beef with vegetables and brown rice, the healthier version of some Chinese food. The tastes were just very similar minus all the greasiness. I finished this meal the following day and enjoyed every bit of it. Yes, I went all out and ordered one of the vegan cakes I think it was the chocolate/raspberry with a chocolate covered strawberry on the side. I ate this cake in two days. It was light and not too sugary. The prices were reasonable and I was happy I enjoyed everything I ordered.
