Highly recommend you visit this vegan spot. Some of the best vegan food around. The Cajun fried shrimp and chicken are my absolute favorite. Not greasy at all and so flavorful. The drumsticks are good as well. The curries also taste authentic. They have changed their menu a bit over the years, but still have some good classics. The desserts are well portioned and delicious as well. Good service and atmosphere. I hope they bring back their "chicken" gyro soon as it was one of their best items. Also, their salads have become slightly bland over the years and hope they add some flavor.

My wife and I stopped by Red Bamboo on a recent trip to NYC to visit our daughter. We had a reservation at Third Kingdom but we were running late -- we were walking from Washington Square Park, it was snowing, and we were famished. We walked by Red Bamboo and decided to cancel our reservation at Third Kingdom and drop in. No problem getting a table that frosty evening. While the food isn't top tier like you'd get at Planta or Ladybird, it hit the spot. The menu is huge -- chockfull of 100% vegan food options -- so we ordered lots of different things to share. We ended up with everyting from buffalo wings to crab rangoon to bbq ribs to some sort of curry. Everything was tasty and prepared well. This is a definite stop for ANY vegan (or non-vegan, for that matter) in NYC. I would love to spend more time working my way through everything on that menu!

Red Bamboo is one of the many tiny ground floor/basement level restaurants lining the streets around NYU. It's a vegan restaurant and one day before class I stopped by on a whim. It was lunchtime, and when I walked in, I was the only person in the restaurant, but as I had my meal, more people started streaming in. Everyone who dined in was doing so alone, which I thought was interesting. There was only one person working the entire front of house and she was really nice and accommodating. The food wasn't anything extraordinary, but I did appreciate the relatively quick service and general ambience of the restaurant.

This is a great vegan restaurant I've been coming here for years. They have an extensive menu and a small but really well curated beer and wine menu. The staff are friendly. My only wish is that there were more soy free options on the menu. But it's a great restaurant to check out. You will find something for everyone in your group on the menu.

I went to this spot with my friend who is vegan. I would like to say this spot was amazing!. The food was great and so were the workers. That had such amazing vibe when interacting with them. I am so sad to found out this place so late. I had the popcorn Shrimp and dumplings as appetizers. It tastes so good and I order Thai Beef Curry w/fried rice. I'm not vegan but this would be a perfect place to go to

I came to red bamboo today to do the HotOnes™ hot sauce challenge, and wow! they sell it as a package $25 gets you 5 vegan drumsticks( on a stick) with some celery and dipping sauce, and a milkshake! I have to say the sauces for the season 24 lineup were actually tasty, it doesn't or didn't get rough until around 6/7 and then 8 the bomb wow! did not disappoint! 9 and 10 i rushed through because i knew if i waited any longer da bomb would've caused me to quit, and after wards i felt a rush lol! the spices were doing something crazy! say all that to say great spot will definitely come back again

In an attempt to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, I've been trying to eat more meals that are plant-based. In general, vegetarian food in the city has gotten a lot better than the last time I tried it a decade ago. But Red Bamboo brought back much of that bitter nostalgia. I mean, just look at these pictures. This is like, college cafeteria food, but for $15-20 a plate. It's on us that the two dishes we ordered were essentially fried pucks - I suppose I could differentiate between the fried "Creole chicken" and the fried "Tonkatsu chop," but it was mostly by texture. The sauces were abysmal - I was especially offended by the A1 steak sauce they offered with the Tonkatsu Chop instead of, you know, something that actually tasted like tonkatsu sauce. But it's one thing to have plant-based "meat" not taste fantastic, it's another for a vegetarian restaurant to not even have fresh plant-based plants. Vegetables and mashed potatoes definitely came from freezer bags. Service staff were nice and looked like they're doing their best. I hope if theyre here because they're vegetarian, they know there are better places to eat.

This is a vegen beer that will knock you off your feet. And they have other flavors.

OK some of the people that live in Peekskill NY may not know this Restaurant, because this place is in NYC. This is a vegetarian restaurant for real vegan diet people. I came here years ago, but my wife and I met our grandson for basketball game in the village and we went here for dinner and hadn't loss a beat, it STILL HAS ALL THE SAME FOOD AND DRINKS THAT STILL THE BEST ON THIS PLANET. Yes I will be back again and you will get your money worth and not be disappointed. This pass Saturday. I f get a chance go and check it out.

Asian Dumplings, Barbecue Buffalo Wings

Wow, incredible, literally everything. Didn't have a single bad dish. Especially loved the Creole Chicken, and the Asian Dumplings. Makes me wish I were still living in New York!

Ask the Community - Red Bamboo

Is the business open for indoor dining?

I am not sure if they are now. They were not about 3 weeks ago

Do they serve wine yet?

They weren't open for indoor seating when I went

Does the restaurant serve foods that are 100% vegan and vegetarian?

I'm pretty sure their whole menu is 100% vegan, with possibly a few vegetarian options but I'm not totally sure. However, their food is so good it's crazy it's vegan.

Is the cheesecake non-dairy?

Yes!!! And it's wonderful!

You'll forget you're eating vegetarian food when you're there. Despite the name "vegetarian," the food is all vegan. The portion sizes are also big, definitely worth the price. The service is great, but I suggest only ordering takeout. That's what my partner and I do because the restaurant gets very busy, and the service isn't always the best when dining in. This is the place to go for vegetarians and meat eaters. The restaurant is fully vegetarian (and…read morekosher). They manipulate the food (tofu or soy product) to resemble meat. My favorite is the BBQ roasted meat that resembles roasted pork. I find that it always is moist and packed with pork flavor. This time there was a seafood special that arrived in a sizzling pot. The sauce was a typical brown sauce with some seafood broth added for flavor. The scallop by the texture, look and taste did resemble the real thing. Mushroom e-fu noodles is another favorite dish that I always get. Noodles are sauced just right to carry the umami from the mushrooms and not be soggy. They usually have a subtle plumpness to them but last time they seemed to be a bit on the flatter side. They renovated since the last time I visited. Most of the circular tables have been removed replaced with rectangular ones. Bench seating is now along the perimeter. I think they can accommodate more people this way. Another plus is they now accept credit cards and participate in several dining cash back programs (Seated, Upside and Franki).

While the sauce with the eggplant was good, the tofu and mixed veggies came in a watery sauce that felt bland and under-seasoned. One thing to note--none of the entrées come with rice, so that has to be ordered separately. On the positive side, they do serve hot tea, which was especially comforting on a cold weeknight. The interiors are simple and clean, the service is quick, and the pricing is reasonable as well. Overall, not a bad experience, but the food itself didn't leave a lasting impression.

We were honestly surprised by how filling everything was -- so many generous, flavorful courses. The pizza ended up being our favorite dish of the night -- absolutely delicious and such a standout. If you're looking for a plant-based spot that still feels like a true night-out experience, Avant Garden really delivers.

I had been looking forward to trying Avant Garden for a long time and chose it for a birthday…read moredinner, so this was especially disappointing. We had a 9:30 reservation on May 9. The reservation email said they would hold the table for 15 minutes, and we arrived at about 9:43 after getting stuck in traffic. We were still within that window, but as soon as we checked in, the host immediately told us the kitchen was closing in one minute and that the bar would close in about 20 minutes, so we needed to place our food order right away. It made the meal feel rushed from the moment we arrived. The restaurant was virtually empty, but we were seated directly next to the bathroom. There were clearly plenty of other seating options available, which made that choice even more frustrating. Unfortunately, there was a noticeable bathroom odor from our table, which was really unpleasant and not what I would expect from a restaurant at this price point. Servers were also constantly going back and forth between the dining room and what seemed to be either a storage or cleaning area near the bathroom, so in addition to the odor, there was steady foot traffic throughout the meal. There were also papers or sugar packets underneath the table next to us, which added to the feeling that the dining room was not being carefully maintained. We ordered the paella, fig toast, and Calabrian flatbread. The food itself was fine in terms of flavor, but the rest of the experience made it feel understated and much less enjoyable than it should have been. The paella and toast came out quickly, and then we waited about 45 minutes for the flatbread. During that time, no one checked in, explained the delay, or asked how anything was. We honestly thought the flatbread had been forgotten. Then, after that long wait, the flatbread and dessert were brought out almost at the same time. The server explained that the kitchen was telling them to bring everything out at once. We had also ordered a bottle of Lambrusco, but it was not available, so we were given a different wine instead. Overall, the pacing and service felt very disorganized. We were rushed to order immediately, then largely ignored for the rest of the meal. No one asked how the food was, no one checked on the delay, and the timing of the final dishes made the meal feel chaotic rather than enjoyable. Even though the food was fine, the experience around it really took away from the meal. I also think there is a practical issue with the reservation timing. If the kitchen closes 15 minutes after the last available reservation, it does not make sense to offer a 15-minute grace period. Either the final seating should be earlier, or the kitchen should remain open long enough to properly serve guests who arrive within the stated reservation window. For a restaurant with Avant Garden's reputation and price point, I expected a much more thoughtful and polished experience. I wanted this to be a special birthday dinner, but we left feeling disappointed. I don't feel eager to return, and based on this visit, I would have a hard time recommending it to vegan friends.
