Came in on a Sunday afternoon and sat at the bar, the atmosphere was exactly what I needed. Quiet, relaxed, not too loud or busy. A really nice vibe overall. The service was excellent. My bartender Lewis/Luis was incredibly attentive, frequently checking in to see how everything was going. He also recommended the Avocado Sushi with truffle miso to go alongside the Bang Bang Broccoli I had already ordered, and it was a great call. The Bang Bang Broccoli is good the tempura is well done and the sauce is delicious but after a couple of bites, the sauce starts to overpower the broccoli and becomes a little too saucy and salty. I found myself reaching for water more than I expected. The Avocado Sushi had a really beautiful smoky, rich flavor, though I do wish they'd pack a little less rice. With so much rice in each piece, it's hard to get a balanced bite cutting it down by half would make it perfect. The Matchatini was a standout. Creamy on top, with just the right amount of alcohol not overpowering at all, just enough to complement the matcha. As tempting as it was to order another one, I wanted to savor the moment, and I'm glad I did. For dessert, I had my eye on the Matcha Sandwich Cookies with ice cream, but they were sold out. Fellow reviewers saved the day though, pointing me to the Matcha Cheesecake and they were 110% correct. That cheesecake did not disappoint. Holy moly!!! What did we just experience on our wedding anniversary?! I had heard so much about this place and had been dying to try it for years. I never got the chance when we were in DC, so it was at the very top of my list for this NYC trip--and wow, it exceeded every expectation. As a vegan, this place is absolute heaven. We ordered three entrées because we wanted to try as much as possible, fully expecting leftovers. Nope. Every single plate was wiped clean. We had the Chili Crunch Ramen, Dan Dan Noodles, and Pepper Steak Lettuce Wraps, and they were unbelievably delicious. The Crispy Gyoza lasted about a minute before disappearing. For drinks, my Kombucha Mojito and Pom & Get It were fantastic. My husband loved the Sunday Beer Light so much that he ordered a second one. And then came dessert... The Chocolate Brownie and Matcha Cheesecake were the perfect ending to an incredible meal. The food, drinks, atmosphere, and service were all top-notch. I am not vegan. If it weren't for our friends who are, and having eaten already at the kopino fest, we probably would not have gone. Funny enough, we met our only other vegan friend there. So, from the vegan perspective, this is a popular and tasty place. We started with drinks, being lunchtime, we opted for non alcoholic drinks, the matcha colada and the salty maple macchiato. The matcha colada had a nice color but tasted mostly like coconut and pineapple which was still yummy. Friends ordered 3 different kinds of sushi and dan dan noodles with tofu. I was confused with the sushi as I thought vegans didn't eat fish...so yes I asked and was told that they probably made the "fish" with tapioca. I did try a bite of each roll (I was still full from the fest) and I was surprised that it tasted pretty good. They did a nice job with the roll and presentation. The matcha cheesecake was nice and creamy. I would not have known it was vegan. I don't normally like food that pretends to be something else because it usually doesn't live up to the real thing. The idea is that it is not pretending to be something but rather substituting with vegan options, I do think from a health perspective, I am more open to trying more vegan foods. My vegan / vegetarian friends and I love this place. It's very good plant based food. I've taken my meat eating friends here and they were surprised by how good it was. Definitely sign up for their rewards program because you get a free birthday dessert. The ambiance is great albeit a bit noisy when the dining room is full. Definitely a great date spot or somewhere to catch up with friends. Service is also excellent. They'll bring the dishes as they're ready! Order and share so you can try more items. As a non-Vegan I was kind of impressed by how far they could take vegan food. Remember, ALL the menu items are vegan so even when they said "chicken" or "steak" it's vegan versions of them. They have a varied sushi menu that does taste pretty close to the real thing. If you're worried about protein or anything of the like, they have extra orders of meat, including the steak and it tells you the grams of protein it contains which is great (though not the total calories, so who knows what the protein: calorie ratio is). My favorite of the night though was the bang bang broccoli which is fried into a really nice texture, somewhat soft in the middle but a nice little crunch throughout. The service was kind. Came here for happy hour and it was so good ! We had the mezcal ginger drink and the margarita. For food we devoured the unagi eggplant with a delicious truffle touch. We had the spicy tuna roll and the crispy rice, both amazing although the toasted coconut detail on the spicy tuna took it over the edge! Service was delightful with Miguel as our bartender. Tucked away and worth the find! This little gem was near an errand I was running and glad I found it. The team members are all great! They take pride in their restaurant's offerings, as they should. My server was wonderful, offering suggestions to this first-timer. I started with a Volcano Roll - hearts of palm substituting for fish. Well balanced and delicious. Next was broccoli "beef" - fresh broccoli and shitake "steak" with mushrooms really balanced the dish. I ended with something so unnecessary and so wonderful, I'm glad I did it: The sticky toffee pudding. Just pure delight. It was relatively quiet when I was there. I could see how it could get a bit noisy if it were crowded. But even so, the people who visit are friendly and I ended up having a great conversation with the table next to me. I'll be back. We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday and the overall experience was amazing! Most specifically regarding the food and the service. However, they're only getting 4 stars from me due to the horribly uncomfortable layout this restaurant has, which I'll review at the end. However, it's important to note that when you arrive, you'll find the host stand in the MIDDLE of the restaurant, towards the end of the bar. It's in such an awkward spot. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our table (despite having a reservation) and there was no where to stand where we weren't in the way. We were either blocking the bar, blocking the entrance to the kitchen or blocking the walkway for people to get by. It was soooo awkward and weird. Not the best place to put a host stand... We're vegetarian, this 100% vegan sushi restaurant is perfect for us as we know we can order anything from the menu and be "safe". We started our meal with the 1000 Layer Crispy Potatoes (recommended by our server) and they were delicious! The perfect amount of sauce combined with the crispness of the potatoes made for a beautiful start to our celebratory meal. Next we indulged in the Red Dragon Roll and the Volcano Roll. Both of which were equally impressive in texture and flavor, we had a hard time deciding which was our favorite between the two. Still hungry after sharing these three menu items, we decided to order the Kimchi Baos. I was a bit skeptical because I'm not a fan of kimchi, however I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them! I really couldn't tell that they had kimchi on them, however they did have a unique flavor that makes them worth ordering again. Additionally, I loved the combination of the crispy fried mushrooms and the soft texture of the bao bun. Lastly, our server surprised us with a Sticky Toffee Pudding on the house to celebrate my husband's birthday! That was so nice and it was actually pretty tasty considering that it wasn't made with eggs. I typically don't enjoy Vegan desserts, but I'd say this one was an exception. Okay, now to the issue with the floor plan here.... The tables are CRAMPED everywhere in this place and they are arranged in such an awkward manner. Where we were seated was definitely one of the worst spots in the entire restaurant. Our tiny little two-top table was on the end near the area with the coat racks....and was next to a table that had someone in a chair sitting in the aisle. To help you get a better idea of the issue: the person in the chair took up half the aisle, meaning every time an employee or guest walked by (which was OFTEN) they had to awkwardly squeeze by and try not to knock into us while doing so. It was so annoying. What's worse, they have these horribly awkward setups with the tables in the middle of the restaurant where there's a little half wall thing in between us and the table next to us....but it was merely inches higher than the table itself. This meant that we were basically sharing a table with the people sitting next to us. Again, this was awkward and uncomfortable because the table next to us had 3 women and a baby who were not only incredibly loud, but they were letting the baby throw food all over the place. Had the floor plan not been so terribly arranged, this would've been a 5-star experience. Instead, we spent the evening trying to ignore the chaos around us. Note to the owners: figure out a new floor plan that is COMFORTABLE for the people eating here. Highlight of our trip to NY! Just one word-- spectacular! This restaurant was very close to our hotel; given how frequently this came up in our searches, we ended up making an excellent decision. I ordered online and the person at the front desk didn't really seem super happy to be there - he just gave me the bag without saying anything. The gyoza had the perfect crunch with the softness of the cabbage filling. The broccoli was seasoned to perfection. For my entree I had the beef and broccoli which was quite satisfying and tasty. There was tofu sprinkled throughout the dish which gave a nice variation of texture but did not really add to the overall flavor of the dish. My husband had the Korean chicken sandwich which I tasted and it was amazing. I'd definitely order that for myself upon return. For dessert we shared an amazing carrot cake that melted in my mouth. It was tremendously flavorful with the right combination of spices. The restaurant on the whole I had two levels. The top is a bit noisier than the downstairs which is where we ate. However much to the set up of many restaurants in tight spaces, tables were quite close to each other. Another small issue I had was the lighting that would change periodically...not sure why. At one point it was so dim I could hardly see my husband across the small table!! Gladly they adjusted it relatively quickly, but it just seemed odd to have changed suddenly. I'm not vegan or a vegetarian, but every so often I'm encouraged by family to try a vegan restaurant. I admit there are impressive and creative recipes in the vegan world, and this restaurant offers really tasty vegan sushi and other items. Of the things we tried here: Torched and Pressed, Bang Bang Broccoli, Firecracker Wings, Red Dragon Roll, and Hawaiian Crunch - we enjoyed all of them. (Unfortunately, they were out of Spicy Tina Roll.). I will note that the Red Dragon was pretty heavy on the vegan spicy mayo, at the expense of the other flavors. When we ordered, the server told us that the items would come to the table as they were made ready by the kitchen. That was a good reminder, because things did come out at different times, which was fine. The server filled our water glasses a couple of times without us having to ask and he was very patient as we lingered after finishing our meal, even filling our glasses one more time after we had paid the bill. I went to PLANTA for my 21st birthday on 02/17/24, and it is by far my favorite vegan restaurant in New York City. Everything from the atmosphere to the food felt special, and it was such a memorable way to celebrate. The absolute standout for me was the vegan matcha cheesecake, it was genuinely incredible. I'm allergic to dairy, so finding desserts like this can be tough, and this one completely exceeded expectations. Even my sister, who isn't dairy-free, said it was the best cheesecake she's ever had, vegan or not. As someone with a dairy allergy, PLANTA was such a convenient and reassuring find. The menu is thoughtful, the food is flavorful, and you never feel like you're missing out. The servers there were also very charming and super inviting. The coconut flavor was strong and the sauce was a bit watery. (I'm guessing they used coconut milk as a substitute for cream). It was udon + 5 pieces of mushrooms. I wouldn't order again. We ate as a party of 7. Unfortunately it was 20 minutes in between the time the first 4 entrees were served at once until the last entree. They seemed to have forgotten one of our orders. I like the truffle cream udon but did find the flavor a bit underwhelming, but the crispy chicken cutlet as an add on was good! Very spacious and beautifully decorated restaurant. Since when are we enforcing time limits on customers, especially those with reservations? And while the waiter was nice enough, they didn't return to check in on us that often. Unlike most restaurant, the hostess counter is half way inside the restaurant, past the bar, past 5 small tables. There were about 10 additional tables deeper inside the restaurant. They prefer reservations but the hostess was able to find us a table. She helped us "book a table" and within 2 minutes, we were seated. The table was so small across the bar, so was probably intended for quick drink (as an alternative from sitting at the bar). If I would had known than I would had opted for another restaurant down the street. The restaurant is cute place, lighting was very dim (like some energy saving half-light) for atmospheric reasons which I didn't mind but can be difficult to read the menu. Two of our party were not vegan and couldn't tell that they were having plant based meat!! We also got the al pastor bowl which had a very large serving size and was very tasty! The food here is OK, nothing spectacular. The best dish is probably the Unagi eggplant nigiri, which tasted shockingly close to unagi with the char. I also got the potatoes, which were also just OK. Similar with the udon, they use a coconut base, which is a very pervasive flavor in the dishes and it almost lends itself to a somewhat sweet taste? from the beverages to the last bite our meal last night was fantastic save for one tiny thing that should've been taken care of in food prep. We had some kind of seaweed taco contraption with the most delicious sauces in avocado and crispy tiny mushrooms. That was fantastic but nothing compared to the delicious skewers and truffle rice that we ate later. The table was comfortable there weren't too many people there at 5 o'clock. I have only two beefs ;) and they are these: the summer rolls had I believe cilantro with stems and someone didn't wash the stems well enough so a very small piece of sand made a tiny chip in my lower tooth. If I were a chef and I had done this fantastic wonderful cuisine and it were under mind by someone simply not washing the vegetables well enough or not cutting the stems off when they should've I would be quite angry. Luckily not long after the debacle with the summer roll we had are delicious entrées and another drink. My only second problem was that when you are having a staff meeting try not to block the bathrooms so that the person has to wedge past you as they're trying to use the bathroom. I had a brace on my foot and nearly tripped just trying to get through the employees to get to the bathroom. It seems that there would be better places to have such a meeting. Incidentally bathroom was clean and spacious once you got to it! Service was attentive. overall I would recommend this place highly though not the summer rolls.
