The view from the dining room

I first came across the Red Canyon Lodge more than 10 years ago when I was in the area for work. While exploring the Flaming Gorge recreational area, I stopped in to grab a beverage and realized I could eat here! On the latest visit I brought my co-worker, who had never been in the area. We were seated right by the window where we were entertained for well over an hour by a family of ducks, a beautiful blue and black woodpecker, a group of swans, and roughly a dozen hummingbirds attracted by the feeders just near the windows. For our dinner we had the prime rib special. There was an 8-oz option and a 12-oz option; I went for the 8-oz, and the meat was cooked perfectly with a well seasoned crust and just enough marbling. The au jus was not very flavorful, and the meat was not very hot, but it was still enjoyable. With the special you had a choice of potato - I got the roasted fingerlings which were perfect; my co-worker is an aficionado of mashed potatoes and enjoyed hers. We also had a choice of vegetable, and both got the asparagus which was cooked perfectly. The only slight disappointment was that the asparagus was supposed to be served with a hollandaise or béarnaise sauce (can't remember which), but they had run out, so it came out plain. The rest of the meal was rich enough that neither of us minded. We decided to get dessert and both love s'mores, so we got the s'mores brownie sundae. The brownie was 'cakier' (if that makes sense) than I had hoped (I prefer a denser/fudgier brownie), but the dessert overall was delicious. A bunch of small marshmallows were on top, all toasted and melty, and it came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Our server, Ash, was great - she was busy as the dining room was packed, but she was attentive, efficient and friendly. One of these days I will stay overnight so I can hike in the area, enjoy a cocktail with my dinner without needing to drive anywhere, and continue to observe all the wildlife that comes out during the evening. I am so glad to know that Red Canyon Lodge not only survived during covid but continues to thrive. I definitely recommend this place for the location, ambiance and food. Last note - there is plenty of free parking here, and after a meal there are chairs to sit outside and enjoy the view. There is also outdoor seating on a deck, weather permitting.

A great place to eat, enjoy the scenery. Kids fishing pond and Green's Lake on the property for paddling, small boats and of course fishing. All part of Flaming Gorge, Utah.

Wonderful wintertime stay in a Ponderosa Cabin on the frozen lake. The cabin was clean and very comfortable, easy to find and spacious. Be aware, no internet, sketchy phone service, no TV and very relaxing and beautiful! The cabins are not wheelchair accessible, maybe other cabins/rooms are. There is electric baseboard heat and even better, a wood stove with ample provided firewood and paper, but matches are very limited as are soaps and shampoo, no conditioner and no salt and pepper. We were also unable to use our wood stove, only smoke would come out and no fire would maintain. Hence the 4 star rating. Even still, the manager/onsite person was very helpful and friendly! Also, no restaurant or other amenities in the winter months.

I love dining at out of the way places. Red Canyon Lodge is located above Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had lunch on the patio with a great view of East Green Lake. I had a jalapeno chicken sandwich. It was served on a huge roll with my choice of salad, soup or fries. Service is friendly and so were the other customers. After lunch, I walked down to the lake and watched people in paddle boats and saw a family of ducks. Nice relaxing afternoon. There is a lot to do at Red Canyon Lodge. You can rent a cabin, rent mountain bikes, go for a horse back ride or if you are really adventurous, take a wilderness pack trip.

My review is solely about the lodging as I didn't have a chance to eat at the restaurant. We spent a weekend up at Red Canyon Lodge for a family vacation and had a blast. We stayed in cabins I-L and they were great. They're set up like duplexes with two cabins sharing a wall. Each have one bedroom with two full beds. They also have a couch that pulls out but I didn't check that out. They don't have a whole lot of cooking amenities so prepare for that. They have two burners, a microwave, and a mini fridge. No oven. The fire pits have a flip down grill. The rooms also have a potbelly stove that, according to my parents-in-law, is super nice and keeps the room toasty in the winter. Each cabin has a fire pit outside and they have multiple docks along the shore of the little lake. The view you have from the front is gorgeous. The whole atmosphere is very nice and relaxing. It's like camping with cabins. There's a small fishing pond for little ones that they keep stocked (bring your own rods or buy one at the store for way more than they're worth). Catch and release. They have a number of paddle boats, recreational sit-on-top kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes that you can rent for a reasonable price. They have horseback rides and stable rides for young kids. Make sure you book these the day before you want to go. We tried to book one the day of and it didn't work out. Great fishing is just minutes away below the dam on the Green River. Some of my family members went on guided day trips and had a lot of fun. I'd be happy to come back and would recommend Red Canyon Lodge to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

Excellent food, but slow service because it can get busy during summer. It's a beautiful location for a resort. I highly recommend coming here. If you forget your camping stove, this is the only place with food for miles. So come and enjoy the scenery while you eat.

Best plan on making reservations way in advance, because proximity to the Green River makes it a real Mecca for trout fishermen.

Oh, where do I start? On June 1, 2021, my wife reserved 2 drift boats for July 7th. We later…read morecalled to change the reservation for 1 drift boat for July 8th, but we were never able to speak to a live person, so my wife left a voicemail. After a few days of not hearing back from Dutch John Resort, my wife called again and left another message. Long story short, my wife called a total of 5 times and no one ever returned her call. One person said someone would. Jump to July 8th. We arrived at the store to pick up our drift boat, what a nightmare. We contacted the young lady who was working in the fly fishing store, and she was truly a breath of fresh air (Ms. Martinez is her name). She went through our reservations and it turns out whoever was responsible for updating our reservation decided to just cancel it. Ms. Martinez handled our reservation as a walk in and was able to direct us to the general store where we were able to book a drift boat for the day. We paid for the rental and drove around to the back side of the store to retrieve our rental. No, it was not that easy. I handed my receipt to the gentleman and he told me to park near the trailers they have lined up near the parking lot, so that is what I did. After approximately 15 minutes, nothing is happening. I walked back over to the boat rental "shack" and the gentleman is telling me my ball hitch is to big ( mine is a 2 5/16 hitch, but I need a 2 inch ball hitch). As he is searching for a hitch, I hear him speaking with another employee asking where "P" is (I used his first initial so I don't embarrass "P"). He then tells the employee "P" is not supposed to be driving because he doesn't have a license, and he is gone, he is finished with "P" because he has told him before not to drive without a driver's license. After approximately an hour of waiting, he finds a ball hitch, hooks up my truck to the trailer and has me drive around to a covered outside fenced area. I did as he requested. I exited my vehicle and I saw the drift boat rental assigned to me. The boat was covered in dirt, there were beer cans and drink cans in the boat and water was still in the boat. He proceeds to use an empty Folgers coffee container to bale out the water, then I help him load it onto the trailer with 2 other employees. As my wife and I are driving out to were we are going to launch the boat, we start discussing the time we wasted waiting for the gentleman to find a tow hitch and prepping the boat. I decided to call Dutch John to see if I could return the boat a first thing in the morning due to the delay and due to the current time; it was approximately 1400 hours when we finally hit the road to the launch site. Oh yeah, the launch site was about an hour away, and the boat needed to be returned by 1900 hours; that simply was not going to happen. A young lady answered the phone and told us if we kept the boat past 1900 hours, we would incur a second days charge ($270.00). We said never mind, but called back 5 minutes later to rent the boat for a second day. Sounds easy enough, right? Nope. When I returned the boat on the 9th, a young man told me I was not getting my deposit back because I did not return the boat on the previous day. He told me "Dave" wanted to talk to me, so he went into the store to get Dave. A few minutes later he came back out and told me "Dave" wanted me to go into the store to talk to him. At this point I am getting very frustrated, but I complied. I walked into the store and asked for "Dave". Guess what, "Dave" was to busy to speak with me, so he sent out one of his employees. The employee was a young lady and she was very nice, courteous and respectful. I explained my "Dutch John Resort" experience with her and she told me she would go back to speak with "Dave". I don't even know if there really is a "Dave" as I have never seen or spoken with him. Anyway, she returns and cleared up THEIR confusion about the late return. I showed the young lady the charge on my card for the second day. Overall experience would be a 1, but the two ladies I dealt with were very helpful, courteous, understanding and respectful. My suggestion, rent elsewhere. Jesse & Kathy

I booked a guided fishing trip for early the following morning. I woke at 6:00 am packed my belongings. When I looked under the bed to see if I had missed anything, I was mortified. There were beer cans, nicotine tin, tissues, and what appeared to be some sort of bone. Yes, a meat bone. I had to meet my guide at 7:00 am. The store was closed so I called the posted phone number to report the issue. A man answered the second number I dialed. I told him what happened. He told me the store opened at 6:30 and he couldn't do anything. At 6:30 the store opened and I talked to a woman at the counter and showed her the pictures. I asked her to look at the cabin. She said she believed me and I texted the pictures to her. When I returned from my fishing trip it was around 5:00 pm. I went into the store and talked to a different woman behind the counter. She told me she had to talk to someone and left. When she returned, she said the manager would take ten percent off the room rate. No apology or anything. I told her that was unacceptable. She left again and a few minutes later the manager, Dave, came out. To make a long story short, Dave accused me of placing the trash under the bed. I told him that I am a retired peace officer, a lieutenant with a CA agency and an upstanding person. He again accused me of putting the trash under the bed as some sort of scam. He said he gets scammed all the time. I took umbrage to this and told him off. He told me to leave, grabbed my arm and started to escort me out. I told him to take his hand off me, which he did. Then he told me he was going to get five guys to take me out. I said, "go ahead". He said he was going to call the police. I said , "please do". When he didn't, I did. A sheriff deputy arrived a short time later. I told him I realized he couldn't do anything and he said he'd talk to Dave. He asked if I paid with a credit card and I said I did. He said if they decided to give me a refund, I would see a credit. I told him I wouldn't expect to see that. I have my own Airbnb and am a super host. I would never treat my guests this way. I would have probably been satisfied with a sincere apology, but 10 percent off the room rate with no apology? That's an insult. And he sends his employee back to extend the offer rather than come talk to me himself. The fishing guide told me he's heard nothing but bad things about Dutch John resort. I've read some other reviews, all negative. Dave is mentioned specifically in one, similar attitude. The owner brushes them all off as disgruntled customers, unjustified.

The property is located in the heart of the Vernal business district, within an easy walk of any businesses in the area. We walked to dinner each night. The layout appears to be the combination of 2 distinct original motels, now combined. This includes an Italian restaurant (reviewed separately). The rooms associated with both of the original motels surround a pool. Rooms are direct access to the parking lot (i.e., no 'central hallway'), which was fine for us. Check-in was easy. They also provide a couple of computers for guest access. This was useful on our last night for printing our boarding passes. In addition, they allow access to their dining room so that you can refill water bottles throughout the day, a service which we took full advantage of. Rooms in back of the pool are slightly trickier to park, but otherwise there was no issue. Our room was spacious in terms of where you can lay out a suitcase. There was also plenty of room on the bathroom counter for all 3 of us. This was in stark contrast to some places we've stayed in the last year (I'm looking at you, Amsterdam!). The only slight drawback to the room was the beds. I don't know that this was quite 'queen size', so 2 of us together both felt a bit cramped. It wasn't a big deal, though. Breakfast on the mornings we stayed here was from 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. The 'rush' seemed to be at 6:30 a.m., as those with river rafting reservations got there early. The process was a bit unique - you queued up and placed an order for most of your food (eggs, bacon, cereal, bread, etc.). Once you got that, you proceeded into the dining room to eat (and to toast your bread, etc.). Coffee and juice was self-serve. I didn't object to this, as I got basically the same food that I'd have had at Hampton Inn, etc. I assume they'd had some issues with food waste, and this was their solution. The food itself was pretty standard. Overall, this is a fairly basic motel that should meet most peoples' needs. I'd consider staying here again if I returned to Vernal.
