To be very clear-there are a lot of great things about Red Eye Cafe. To start, it's located in a super cute and decorative street in Montclair, NJ. The ambiance in the cafe is cozy and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly nice. The food is also a real hit. For drinks, I ordered a vanilla chai ($4) which was amazing and perfectly spiced and sweet. For food, we ordered the pumpkin pancakes ($10) and the avocado toast ($14-16) both were great. The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful with a nice cinnamon butter. The avocado toast was fresh and it's a big portion. Unfortunately, the service was noticeably slow, so keep that in mind if you're visiting on the weekend.

Was meeting a friend for brunch on a Saturday so thought let's check out this cute little spot right in the heart of Montclair. I found parking right by the train station and just walked a block over. It was a little after noon time and surprisingly they had a couple of two seat tables open so we were able to be seated right away. The vibe is super chill and I love that there is a shelf of book running along the back that kids or adults can borrow while at the restaurant. Service was impeccable from the minute we sat down. The staff was very attentive. Food didn't take long to come out at all. The omelette was cooked well and the salmon BLT was flavorful and hearty. The salad that accompanied it definitely needed some acid in the dressing. Had a lot of potential but tasted like nothing. My only complaint was the bathroom seemed a little dirty. Possibly from all the morning traffic but a little tidy up was needed.

Revisiting this place after a few years initial visit. Let's see how it goes.

Been here before but not in a long time. From the beginning the staff were friendly and attentive. It's a small place and it was busy so that says something about the quality of food. I ordered the Challah French Toast and coffee. Both were good. I just wish the French toast was hotter temp wise. Y'all know how I feel about my food being lukewarm. lol. Despite being lukewarm, it was tasty....and I was too hungry to ask them to warm it up. My time was a good one so only complaint would be temp of food.

Both classic & grilled chicken sandwich are really good.with this quality , how they still can keep the price $10 at prime location , Montclair Perfect cafe spot to socialize with people and dog after dog walk in the summer.

Worth the wait for the delicious brunch at this cute cafe. Great local spot, highly recommended from friends, and a great little coffee bar to boot. Definitely plan ahead and try to get a table early or make a reservation. Once sat though, the service is very quick and very friendly. I went with the red eye hash with the daily healthy juice. The fresh pressed juice was actually really quite good. I loved the hash! Lots of delicious chunks of corned beef, tasty seasoned potatoes, fresh eggs and that scrumptious red eye gravy. The menu really was comprehensive though. I was hard pressed to not make my own omelette, get a lunch sandwich, or just go with the special pancakes. So many tables ordered the pancakes for the table and was very jealous. Since we have friends in the area, we know where to get brunch with them when we're hanging with them again. Bravo!

This was my second time coming here and it was just as great as the first time. The first time I had the Avo burger with an egg which I remember being delicious and yesterday I had the breakfast burger and vanilla chai tea. The burgers were both very well seasoned and filling. Highly recommend their burgers! The chai tea was one of the best I've ever had and I've had my share of chai's! I believe the side of chips that the burgers come with are made in house, they have a unique flavor that I cannot describe but are soooo delicious and very crunchy. The employees were kind and there was a cozy vibe.. there is metered street parking!

Really surprised it took me this long to try this restaurant. Food was really good and service was excellent! I came here to catch up with a friend and felt like the server was attentive and he did not rush us at all!! Restaurant is super clean with a bookstore/coffee house aesthetic. Plus, they have a selection of breads and sweets you can grab on your way out. Must order dish - buttermilk pancakes with walnuts and bananas. The pancakes were so fluffy and the toppings were really fresh + the syrup was not too sweet. Omelettes were also amazing. I especially liked that they added a LOT of cheese!

Passing by and stopped in to grab some coffee and figured we would try the baked goods because they looked so good. They were sliced already and wrapped in plastic wrap so we bought a coffee cake, oatmeal raspberry bar and matcha crinkle cookie to go. The baked goods looked nice but the only one that was not very disappointing was the matcha crinkle cookie. It was tender and soft in the middle and tasted quite nice. Very distinct but not overwhelming matcha flavor. The oatmeal bar and coffee cake were terribly stale. The oatmeal bar in particular was actually so hard we could barely cut it with a knife. And it was bland. Almost no raspberry in it so you didn't really taste that. And the rest of it tasted like an insipid teething cookie. Just meh. The coffee cake tasted somewhat better in that you could detect cinnamon but aside from that it was also so hard it was more like bread than a cake. Not sure we would come again. You can see the baked goods in the picture.

My girlfriend wanted to stop for some coffee, and once we stepped in we decided to get a few items to go and sample with the kids at home later. I'm sorry we did that because other than the matcha crinkle cookie, they were not very good. The matcha crinkle cookie was soft inside with a nice crunchy outside. I'm not usually a fan of matcha, but I actually liked this a lot. I always find that matcha things taste too much like grass or hay for me. But not this. It definitely had a matcha flavor but it was very pleasant and I could taste a milky flavor in it. I enjoyed it. I wish we could say the same about the oatmeal raspberry bar and the coffee cake. Remember, I said we took them home to split and tried with everybody. The raspberry oatmeal bar was so stale and hard. We could barely cut it with a steak knife. When we finally got it cut, it crumbled apart because it was so hard. We might've been able to overlook the fact that it was hard and treat it like a cookie if it had a good taste. But it didn't have that either. It had almost no raspberry inside and as a result, you couldn't really taste any raspberry. And the cake/cookie part was very boring. It didn't have any depth of flavor and tasted like a mediocre store-bought cookie. Coffee cake too was very hard, although to be fair, it did taste like a coffee cake. I don't know that we would give this place another try.

Enjoyed breakfast here with my husband. Came in right at opening on a Saturday. We were seated right away but I was pretty surprised at how quickly it became busy. The space itself was warm and inviting. The pastries at the front looked delicious. We both ordered matcha lattes and omelets. Everything came out exactly as ordered. The omelets were fluffy and a nice big size. The potatoes were actually a little cold but had good flavor. The matchas were decent. Overall a good experience and I would definitely come back again.

A great local cafe!! I've been to the Red Eye Cafe a few times and it always continues to deliver great food! I went yesterday for an early lunch on a Friday and it was quite busy with a 10-15 minute wait for a table by the time I left. Many came for quick grab and go coffee along with some tables outside on a nice day. It's pretty small inside with only about 10 tables but it's a great cozy atmosphere. I got my favorite sandwich there, the turkey pear sandwich which comes with a small side salad. Despite being busy the service was timely and attentive! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Montclair is surely full of a bunch of great restaurants but I'll definitely keep going back to Red Eye Cafe!

Their Salmon BLT is hands down the winner at this place. Dirty Chai Latte is a must here too.

***3 1/2 stars***…read more Yesterday I decided on a total whim to just grab lunch here before seeing Disclosure Day across the street. I've walked by a gazillion times, usually in the mid-afternoon or evening when the place is really jumping (at least based on the outdoor seating situation). This time around, I came for an early lunch around 11:30am when there were only a few other people sitting down and I had my pick of indoor or outdoor seating. I didn't get much of a look at the interior during my brief trip inside, but it seemed pleasant enough. Morally I didn't have much of a choice though but to sit outside at their communal picnic tables, given that it was sunny and 72. You do the math. As most of my solo eating adventures go, the service was excellent. It definitely helped that it wasn't busy, but both waitresses on the premises were super attentive and I ordered my meal literally within 30 seconds of sitting down. I wasn't on a hardcore schedule (my movie wasn't for an hour and 15 minutes) but I was in and out in probably 20-25 minutes, which is just wild for a legit sit-down meal. Top marks all around. I liked that they kept a bottle of tap at my table too; just efficient there. As soon as I saw gnocchi on the menu, my decision was made. I went with the gnocchi al pomodoro off the lunch entree menu, which was honestly just okay. This is usually a dish I really enjoy, and while it was clearly fresh (the chunks of mozzy are a nice touch) it was pretty bland and tasteless. It's extremely rare for me to look around for seasoning, but I did here (and didn't see any within range, so let it go). Honestly very surprising. The gnocchi itself was fine, but the pieces were so small it was actually difficult to eat/get them onto the fork tines. I had to scoop most of them up, and it was a slow process. Not the biggest deal in the world (the gnocchi was tasty in and of itself) but just a slight annoyance. The price point was fine; with tip, I paid a little over $20, which is on par for Montclair. Maybe it was just an off day/lunch, but I think the play is to come back for dinner with a bottle of wine and get a different dish. This place is very popular (during my brief meal, several people walked by openly declaring they were going to stop by later to eat) so perhaps a few grains of salt here, which would have been nice to add to my dish.

So even though they went digital only, they had no listed prices, which is annoying, especially if there was a line. It's just not the most ideal ordering experience. I did get a hazelnut frappe ($6.50) which was sweet and very thick. I was tempted and gave into a cinnamon role ($7.50) which they warmed up. Both were perfect sweet treats and didn't taste odd being vegan. The roll was huge. I probably shouldn't have gotten both because it was decadent, but they both rocked. It's angled on a the corner of Broad and Belleville (which is cool bc of how it's situated) and when you walk in you know you're stepping a bit back in time bc some of the original features of the building are still evident which makes for a warm welcome. There's plenty of seating available if you want to stay and people watch out the window or post up and do a little work with a cushioned window seat and table. I didn't even realize they were vegan until the wonderful woman stated it as I inquired about the dairy choices (so this was my first time having a vegan iced coffee). I went with the Crème Brûlée iced with oat milk and it HIT! It was seriously one of the most delicious iced coffees I've ever had (& I drink a lot of iced coffee).
