I had the oshinko (crunchy Japanese pickle: I had never had this before, and it's good!), chicken tempura (good, pretty crispy despite the moist surroundings) and Philly roll (pretty good.) It was successful and since then, it's about the only local place I'll indulge in sushi or sashimi. Everyone who works there is so kind and welcoming. No seriously, EVERYONE. The food is very fresh, addictive, and pretty. The cooks do a great job preserving the art. Even if you're just out for a drink, it's a great stop. Out of all of the empty tables in the restaurant, the woman whom I believe is either the owner or in management, sat us at the only table within feet of the kitchen. Kindly, we asked to switch to a different spot and was met with what can only be described as a tantrum. Eye rolling, audible sounds of displeasure, menus tossed across the table. I truly expected her to stomp away. Lucky us, she was our server too! Now in the past I have worked for many years in Quad City restaurants, and I have never once approached a table and said "what do you want? ". You can imagine how pleasant she was when we ordered two drinks from their own bar menu. The story didn't get any better from here, more of exactly the same. We decided to give Red Ginger a chance because we love sushi and this particular place has great reviews when it comes to their sushi. We loved the decor when we walked in and we were seated quickly. We loved the staff and the establishment was very clean and we loved the atmosphere. We ordered the yam tempura for our appetizer and oh my gosh it was delicious. Then the sushi came... One of us ordered a basic chicken tempura roll. What we got was a roll with chicken tempura, lettuce, cucumber on the inside and masago (fish eggs) on the outside. This is not a basic chicken tempura roll. And the person who ordered it is somewhat picky and this was not what she wanted. No where on the menu did it say there was any of the extra ingredients included in what was supposed to be a basic chicken tempura roll. Another ordered an eel roll and a Manhattan roll. The eel roll was very warm which was weird. The Manhattan roll was overwhelmingly fishy and it made me nauseous with the first piece. Couldn't finish it because it was so bad. I'm unsure why it was so fishy and I'm now glad I didn't order anything with raw ingredients. Another nit picky complaint was when picking the roll up with our chopsticks the piece would literally just fall apart. Which, for us, means poorly made sushi. Overall, we decided a 1 star review was best. Yes the atmosphere and appetizer were great. But the Sushi, which is their main dish, was a severed disappointment.
