Not local to the area and we had a two hour wait for family to arrive at the airport so we took a chance on Red Ginger based off reviews. Food was fresh, nicely presented and delicious. Forgot to take pictures but we tried a few rolls and everything was tasty. Staff was friendly and if ever in the area I would definitely go back. I tried several sushi rolls, fried rice, cream cheese ragoons, soup, salad. It was all superb. They have good lunch specials, also. For $11, you can get a four course meal, including fried rice, salad, soup and an entree. And they have traditional Japanese style booths, in which you must remove your shoes (if you don't want to do this, they also have regular tables). This is a great little plus, which really gives the feeling of Japanese culture and tradition. The restaurant is also very nicely decorated and could be considered a romantic setting. read more

I often crave sushi and my only dream is for it to be like sushi from my favorite places from home. While this place wasn't quite the same it certainly satisfied my craving for the time being. I just wish I took pictures. Everything tasted about as good as it looked! Of course it was on the pricier side, but I wish there were better deals during the day. The establishment is large, bright, and beautiful. Sometimes it felt weird being squished all together in a giant room with all the tables and chairs. Atmosphere was just OK. We had a coupon for BUY 1 GET 1 entree free. We went on New Year's Eve. The place was nearly empty. We were told we could not use the coupon since it was a "holiday". Where I work the Holiday is New Year's Day (not the night before) Judging from the amount of customers in the place I would say they would want repeat business. We drive 25 minutes to get there and I would not say after having to the coupon rejected that we would return. We even bought bar drinks. I feel bad leaving such a low review. We stopped in and the place had 3 others in it and it was dirty and unorganized. The tables had random things all over it by the bar area. So that already said chaos. But we sat at the bar with a delightful waitress. The hostess was also the manager and the to go order lady and the bartender. It was fine until to go orders had her basically stressed and not asking for help. Our nice waitress asked can I help she yelled no. Well she was also the bartender. So that held up the current table. So I know people are understaffed but train the people you have especially if they are willing to do more. Our delightful waitress could have took the orders and checked the bags. The sexy boy roll was good. In summary: average sushi. A personal favorite of mine, the sweet potato roll, is never consistent at Red Ginger. Sometimes it's perfect, and sometimes the sweet potato is too raw and hard. I've stopped ordering it because it's a huge waste of money when it's hardly edible. Nothing I've had here is spectacular, and there are plenty of better options in the area. Went to enjoy a nice meal with friends yesterday evening. While the food was quite good and the drinks ok, the staff was less then desirable. We arrived about 20 minutes before happy hour ended, a happy hour that consisted of BOGO drinks before 5pm. When the waiter took our order he told a specials - not explaining that if you want to take advantage of the drink special you have to order all of them he drinks you are going to have before the 5pm mark; however, it was implied that as long as you ordered your drink before 5pm that you can get your 'free' at any point thereafter! So we ordered our drinks and our food. After the first rounds of drinks finished we proceeded to order our 'free' drinks and enjoy the rest of our meal. When checks came out everyone who had ordered drinks was charged double, when asked why (assuming it was a simple mistake) we were then notified since we had not ordered our drinks before 5pm the second one was not free. When explaining that we had ordered the first drink before 5pm we should not be charged for the second one. We went on to explain that he had not expressed to any of our group that 'all' of the drinks had to be ordered before the 5pm mark. He called over a lady, whom we can only assume was his manager, and discussed the situation with her - she too was adamant that we had to order all our drinks before 5pm or the BOGo special does not apply. We explained that the article aired failed to mention this to us, nor is it posted anywhere, displayed on any menus or flyer, etc. Long story short, she would not work with us and honor the happy hour special! Why I can't speak for the others in my party, I can quite honest say that I lost my taste for this place and WILL NOT be returning. If they cannot honor their specials and if this is how they treat their customers, I can find plenty of other local business that would welcome my patronage and provide quality customer service. Note: if you are going to a Red Ginger anytime soon, I suggest another location - maybe they will be more willing to provide their customers quality service. read more

We visited on a Sunday a few weeks ago at lunch time. There weren't many patrons, and there were lots of tables available, but new people who came it were seated right next to us despite the myriad of open tables. The tables are rather close to each other, so I felt like we were in their personal space, especially since we had a toddler in a high chair with us. Other than the needless crowding, our visit was a good one. We had bento lunch sets and enjoyed everything, though the Shumai wasn't our favorite. We were spoiled by access to amazing dumplings when we lived in Asia, so we need to learn to temper our expectations since Chinese/Japanese food Stateside is simply not the same. I'm excited to return and try their sushi on a future occasion, but I'd definitely be excited to order most anything on their menu! read more

My wife and I finally dined in here. We had ordered carry out previously but the dining experience really kicked it up a notch. Very hip decor, super friendly wait staff, and the food was excellent. As far as I know this is the only place in town to get authentic ramen. My wife got the teriyaki (a safe option for the less-than-adventurous) and my word... it was easily the best I've had in this town or any other. The katsu is also excellent. I've enjoyed everything I've ordered here. There's a part of me that worries Cedar Rapids can't support cool joints like this, so it's up to all of us to get out there and patronize local restaurants that are really nailing it. The sushi chef, not even chef, or partimer, didn't know how to cut fish/sashimi into the right portion (Imagine sashimi don't​ have constancy cut, but murder looks). And both them were talking trash behind the sushi bar. Ask how do I know that, because I can speak their language lol. I'll try to chalk this up to it being brand new, and maybe the staff not being on their game, but... I came here for dinner on a Friday night with my friend. She asked for her water 3 times before the waitress remembered to bring it over. My friend received her soup and salad, but I did not. I had to remind my waitress another 2 times for my soup and salad. She feigned surprise, assuming I wanted it with my entree (no, of course not). The salad arrived and it was doused in ginger dressing -- it was good, but it turned my lettuce mushy. My friend's teriyaki dish was too sweet, so she ended up taking most of it home for her boyfriend. While she waited for my meal, hers got cold. Timing was way off for everything delivered to our table. What's the deal with that? I ordered the sushi entree (9 pieces of sushi Chef's choice + Cali roll) and I got the sashimi entree instead (funny it came so late to the table, because it seems less work than the sushi!). I didn't bother sending it back because my friend's food was already getting cold and it took forever for my food to come out. Found two bones - TWO! - in one of my pieces of sashimi. It made me sick. Ordered a cocktail, and it was flat and tasteless. Also, didn't give me chopsticks, which is weird at a sushi bar. Ate with a fork, because reminding the waitress for more stuff was annoying by the end. I may be back, but only a maybe. I really wasn't impressed with the food or service. Then I looked at the menu and almost jumped out of my skin! It's almost double any other location I've been to! The food we received was well-prepared and tasty, but it was very unevenly spaced. As a first timer going there, I was a little skeptical about this place since driving by occasionally and not seeing it being busy for the most part. The exterior is dull and do need more appearance to attract more customers. The interior gives you a semi-Japanese style atmosphere but where the dining area is where in needs more than an average Asian restaurant. They have an everyday happy hour from 3-5 on special sushi which is buy 2 get 1 free and all drinks are buy 1 get 1 free. You can get better than that. Even staying there after happy and talking to the manager they were more than welcome to kept the specials going. The sushi was above average for the taste and but lacks presentation. I really enjoyed my meal at red ginger. I did not order any sushi, but came specifically for the ramen. I had the duck ramen which came in a large bowl with boiled egg, greens, scallion, bamboo shoot and lots of noodles. There were some duck breast pieces in there to flavor the broth which was very tasty. Service was good and the place is very clean.
