Note: This is a review for the new Korean BBQ! It's essentially your own korean style hibachi grill. Our server Izzy was super helpful in getting us started, but gave us enough autonomy to cook our own stuff and enjoy the experience. The dinner started out with Banchan, which consisted of a bunch of small dishes that would be passed around - among the veggies, bean sprouts, potato's, salad, miso soybean soup, etc., the kimchi radishes were my favorite. Upon request (and free of charge), they'll bring out seconds of whatever you'd like. Then, they come out with a variety of meats that we cook ourselves (with guidance if needed) on the grill in the center of the table. Tried this place out after seeing all their menu had to offer, and it was good! We came in super late and thankfully they still took us, and staff was so nice whole time. I got the classic bibimbap and my boyfriend got the miso ramen. I will say I don't think we ordered the right things, because the menu seemed amazing but our food was decent. The bulgogi was really good, and we both enjoyed our meals. The place is themed and very nice, seems like a cozy spot. We will be coming back to try more and use the hot pot as well! read more

We were in the area camping at wanatee park and stopped in for lunch. How lucky are we that we found this amazing restaurant in this beautiful little town. The owners are amazing and the staff are amazing. This was probably some of the best we've ever had in our life and that's saying a lot. The hot and sour soup was phenomenal and the Thai coconut soup was the same just fresh vegetables and flavor. Everything was just terrific! I also had a dirty martini, which was probably the best dirty martini that I have ever had. It was just so good. We sat at the bar in the atmosphere is so romantic even at lunchtime it was just beautiful. I guess luck was just on our side to find this special little place. read more

If you're anywhere near Marion and haven't been to MIX Sushi & Kitchen yet, you are missing out. This place is phenomenal. The sushi is fresh and creative. Every roll we tried was incredible. And the hot pot? So fun and absolutely delicious. It turns dinner into an experience, not just a meal. We brought our three kids and they had the BEST time. They loved being part of the hot pot experience and were entertained the whole night, which says a lot for a family dinner out. What truly makes this place stand out though is the hospitality. The owner, Kyle, goes completely out of his way to make sure everyone feels comfortable and taken care of. You can tell he genuinely cares about every table and every guest. I had tried MIX once back when they were so new they had notes on their menus indicating which sections of the menu weren't available yet. I tried them again yesterday, and the meal was fine. There wasn't anything wrong with it that would make me say that it was bad, and (if you're a fan of plating) I thought my plate was gorgeous, but there just wasn't anything about the meal that I liked enough to make me want to go back. I ordered the dakgalbi. As far as I know, I have never had dakgalbi before. (I've been to a number of Korean BBQ places where I've eaten foods without knowing what they were called. So, it's possible I have had dakgalbi before and just don't realize it.) Anyway, having nothing else to go off of, my expectations of the dish were solely based on the menu description. That description referenced a "spicy gochujang marinade," and I think it had two icons next to it to indicate spice level. I really like spicy foods, but I'm not someone who is into extreme spice. To give you an idea of my spice tolerance, I use standard hot sauces very frequently, but I don't go seeking out hot sauces that are spicier than Huy Fong or Tapatio, and I typically ask for medium (or 3 / 5) when a server asks me what spice level I want on a dish. I wasn't asked about spice level at MIX, but I expected maybe a 2 / 5, because the menu said spicy and referenced gochujang, but I also realize this is Iowa and restaurants tend to tone down their spice levels for the Iowan palate. My dakgalbi had zero spice, though. I'm not trying to say that it was bland. It had plenty of flavor. That flavor just wasn't spicy at all. I don't claim to be an expert on Korean food, but I feel like the primary flavors I noticed were green onion, and the slightly sour taste that comes from kimchi. If I sound unsure about the flavors, it's because the menu description definitely referenced green cabbage. I don't think it mentioned kimchi, because I feel like it would have made an impression on me if I read that the dish had both fresh cabbage and fermented cabbage. So, I'm not really sure what I was tasting. My son ordered miso ramen with chicken added. I ended up eating about a third of it. The chicken was actually phenomenal. It was the only component of anything we had that I would definitely order again. The ramen broth was nothing special to me. My son didn't seem to be a fan, either. My son also got an order of yakisoba to go. The noodles were good. If you like mushroom flavor, I would actually feel pretty comfortable recommending this yakisoba to you. Personally, I prefer mushrooms when they're cooked into a mushroom gravy, or carmelized a bit. These mushrooms were cooked much more lightly, which caused them to give a lot stronger of a mushroom flavor than I like. That's not meant as a criticism. It's just something that I think will really impact whether you personally like this yakisoba. read more

Miso soup is inedible due to the amount of salt. Told the waiter soup was inedible due to salt and he just said yea it's really salty because they use it as a base for their broth that gets watered down but wouldn't take it off bill. Sushi was ok, better than gas station sushi but worse than about any other sushi. If you're choosing between this and gas station sushi choose this every time! read more

Went to MIX with my boyfriend for AYCE sushi on a Friday afternoon. It was quiet (we went around 2:30) with just a couple of other tables occupied. Service was super friendly and accommodating and we were taken care of very well. There is a 20% gratuity applied to all AYCE orders, but honestly for the price ($30 + the gratuity) it was a little expensive, but still worth it and probably one of the better AYCE options in Iowa. The nigiri was, as expected, a lot of rice. But honestly the piece of fish that they had on each brick of rice was actually a good portion. I was really pleasantly surprised (impressed even?) at the specialty rolls. Usually those are a pass for me at AYCE sushi, but the specialty rolls here didn't feel like all filler like at a lot of other AYCE sushi spots. I really liked the Sun Dragon and Fire Dragon rolls. Don't sleep on the appetizers at AYCE sushi either. We enjoyed a couple of rounds of takoyaki and fried calamari. Our friends went for hotpot the same weekend (they do a deal on Sundays for AYCE hotpot!) and said it was good. We want to come back soon to try the Korean food as well! read more

Was glad to find this restaurant in Cedar Rapid. It is an Asian fusion restaurant with some Japanese and Korean foods in the mix. Parking was a bit harder to find due to road work the day of our visit, but that should be temporary. The outside was quiet but when we stepped inside, we found a lively place. Down to earth but a clean place. The server was friendly and helpful, but due to the number of tables he had to serve it seemed like the service was a tad slow. We ordered three dishes for our dinner; a seafood pancake, a bibimbap, and a Korean BBQ. The Korean BBQ was on the mark both BBQ flavor and the tenderness of the meats. The seafood pancake and the bibimbap have a lot of fresh ingredients but unfortunately there were flaws in the execution and the flavor is a bit bland. There were a lot of entrees to choose on the menu. Maybe, they should focus more on the dishes that they are best at. Next time in the area, we might try their Japanese entrees. read more

I've gone twice in the last month and had excellent service each time. We did the hot pot the first go around and it was a lot of fun. So cool that we have it in the area. The waitress and kitchen staff were also very accommodating to one in our group that had a food allergy and offered some great substitutions. The second time I ordered a korean soup, that said it wasn't spicy, but when it came it was super duper spicy. The manager came out and explained that it was a menu error and actually the hottest thing on the menu, he offered to substitute it for another miso based soup right away and it was delicious! I don't like making a fuss at restaurants so I was glad that the waitress was so attentive and noticed. I'd recommend to anyone, but if you're trying something new for the first time be sure to google the dish first lol! read more

I'd driven by this place many times and assumed it was a bar. We found it while looking for a new place to eat before going to see a comedian down the street at the Giving Tree Theater. We were blown away by the selections on the menu. We decided to share a black dragon roll, a tempura shrimp roll, and share Mix fried rice. We enjoyed them all and would order them all again. I do expect to explore the menu a bit first though as there were many items that sounded mouth watering. The downside to this place is the tables. They all have a base that gave me no place for my feet and little space for my knees. I didn't see any seating options that would allow us to avoid that problem. We didn't order anything that made use of the built in warming plates and yet we had to cope with the discomfort. I'll leave this at a 4 star for the food but it would be a 2 star for the seating. I'll just plan on going with take-out next time around. read more

I've been here twice for lunch. First visit we had the dragon roll plate and bibimbop and the calamari appetizer. The sushi was very good. Best I've had since I lived in Oregon! Fish was very fresh. The bibimbop was good but lacked spice. A little more heat in the sauce would have made a huge difference. Service was very slow and we got our appetizer at the same time we got our food. Second visit we both had sushi lunch specials. Service was much better but the kitchen was still very slow. Btw both times the place was not busy at all. Again, great sushi. Just be prepared to wait awhile for your meal. Would have given 5 stars if that problem was solved. But if you're not in a hurry I highly recommend. read more

It's been long since my last soft tofu stew. Asked to triple the spicy. Clams were fresh, stew was spicy enough to my standard. Lots of designated parking spaces back side of the building. Introduced my two, long-time girlfriends to this fantastic restaurant yesterday. Everything on the menu was in my wheelhouse. I have to say this place is hands down, top notch and #1 best restaurant in the Cedar Rapids / Marion area in my book. We had the Crab Ragoons - Lightly fried, stuffed with mouthwatering fluffy cream cheese and chives. Melt in your mouth deliciousness. Hot & Sour soup - Quite Spicy! (was told later we could ask for low spice level), flavorful, and stuffed with green onions, tofu and tofu skins, wood ear and enokki mushrooms. Took this one home to add some lemon juice to it to temper the spicy level down to edible. Pineapple Fried Rice - large portion, full of fantastic flavor. My gf couldn't stop raving about it. Crunchy Roll sushi - 8 pieces!! Amazing! The roll prices were so affordable! The rice was fresh and fluffy, the laver (seaweed wrap) was fresh and not chewy, the fish was fresh and clean tasting. Shrimp Tempura Roll sushi - 8 pieces!! Excellent too. HOT POT!!!! This was the ladies' first experience with such a thing. Not something you can do on a 30-minute lunch break. We selected to cook in our Mushroom (1st broth choice) and spicy Coconut Curry (2nd broth choice) broths: Entree: Vegetable Plate (tofu puffs, firm tofu, cilantro, baby corn, oyster mushroom, spinach, taro, and bamboo. Watercress, bok choy, lotus root.) Add-ons: Super thinly sliced chicken breast and four fillets of Mahi-Mahi. Needless to say....WAY, WAY, too much food for 3 people. Our Hot Pot deliciousness came home with us as did most of the Fried Rice. I'm visiting from Los Angeles (and live within 15 minutes from Koreatown) and there is NOwhere with a menu so complete and diverse as I found at MIX! This is a good place for vegetarians too. There is a smokey tomato based broth. Rarely can you find Hot Pot broths that are fish based and entree options (Mahi-Mahi and shrimp) for pescatarians. I ordered through DoorDash. I have an egg allergy ans stated so in the notation box. I was unaware that one of the rolls I ordered had eggs. DoorDash had called me and told me that I could supplement it which was fine. What was not fine was the fact that when my order arrived, I was given eggrolls instead of one of my other orders. I am very upset and had to throw all my food out due to possible cross-contamination. I do not know why I was given something that I am allergic to instead of something I had originally ordered. If you have a food allergy, I do not recommend ordering from this sushi place online. read more

Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area... It's time to break away from the traditional meat, potatoes and fried fare and give Mix a try! Coming from a big population center, I've been really wanting for something different and Mix delivers in a big way. We tried their Hot Pot offering and the soup portion is unlimited, so have at it! When you order the Hot Pot, it comes with a selection of Asian vegetables and a meat, fish, protien or Vegetarian selection of your choice. While you're sipping on the soup as an appetizer, you put your veggies and protein in the soup while it cooks in front of you. Give it a try, it may be your new favorite place in town... Then come back for sushi or some other Korean fare, there should be something you can find that you like. read more

Truly great food. Extensive menu, great atmosphere. Mix has food with Korean, Japanese and Chinese food. The main theme here is Korean food, so you get an assortment of small things like Kimchi. The menu is super extensive. It has sushi (LOTS of different sushi rolls), fried rice (including kimchi fried rice), poke bowls, spring rolls, rangoons, ramen, Korean fried chicken, pad Thai, yakisoba, mei fun, soups, salads and Japanese soda. Ate lunch there last Spring. I love Japchae. However, the Japchae was so sweet, it tasted terrible. Koreans cut the noodles into bite size pieces, but the cook left the noodles long, so hard to eat. for my very first hot pot experience this was pretty amazing. I was there with a couple for friends who's wedding I'm officiating and we were impressed. We went for the AYCE hot pot and at $26 it had a lot of options, from protein to veggies and other add ins was impressive. Our server was quite attentive and made sure we had all we needed. My only complaint is that some of the little neck claims that were ordered were not open (the seafood I believe was precooked and frozen to ensure a quick cook). The meats were sliced thin then frozen obviously to ensure optimum freshness. Many options for the broths but we went with traditional and mushroom. The dipping sauces were a make your own which was a treat so you can try different styles. It's a modern establishment with a friendly atmosphere and modern decor. I've been wanting to try their food for a while and decided to take a chance today. I ordered teriyaki chicken, which comes with white rice and vegetables. Had my meal delivered via Door Dash, so I wasn't eating in the restaurant, just dipping my toes in before committing to going in person since I'd heard mixed reviews about service. Onto the food, two words, not impressed. I've had better chicken teriyaki at the food court in Coralville. There were big pieces of chicken, but they were dry, and there wasn't very much of sauce to compensate. Rice was good sticky rice, not what I expected from a non-sushi dish, but still okay. The vegetables consisted of broccoli florets and carrot slices. Broccoli was cooked well, but I wasn't a fan of the slices of carrot. Overall, I would not order this dish again. Maybe I will give them a try with their sushi items to see if my experience is better! read more

The food at MIX is delicious, my problem is with service. Our server first served me the incorrect drink, which I was fine with. But then when we ordered food he did not right our order down, which resulted in multiple issues with our food; The wrong roll, forgot to add chicken to our fried rice, etc. Also extremely frustrating that he never came back to ask how our food was, never asked if we'd like another drink, and never refilled waters. I was unable to get his name unfortunately. We will be back in the future, hoping the service improves. read more

This place represents all of my favorite Asian dishes with 1 menu, & 1 place. We're lucky to have a big city level, quality establishment in suburbville Iowa. Blessings to the owners for bringing Korean, Japanese, Chinese & Thai level flavors and dishes to our community. I counted and have at least 10 dishes I'd like to order, after my 1st visit. Reviews from me are rare these days as I don't want people finding out about my favorite places or hidden gems. But, we needed this place and I will support it as the best restaurant in the Corridor if they keep it up. Quality, service, location. Bibimbap, Kimchi, Bulgogi, Hotpot, WHAT?! My favorites.
