Made a reservation for 2 a couple of hours beforehand and we were seated in the bar area on a high top table soon after we arrived. The table was small but it was worth it for a last minute reservation. The service was great, as our server was extremely attentive and checked in on us often. We ordered the Wakame Salad to share and the server brought it out in two separate plates already portioned out for each of us. The Sushi Trio was great- definitely made with high quality fish and the rice was soft and perfectly flavored. We read the raving reviews on the Seafood Pad Thai and were curious to try it ourselves... it was delicious! We asked for it to be spicy and it came out as the perfect level of hot- quite spicy but not to the point of losing the other flavors of the dish. Portions are small and expensive. The food is good, albeit mildly bland. I had the avocado sushi and miso tofu. The sushi is tiny, but the avocado in it was really good. The tofu dish isn't really worth saying much about. For dessert I got the white chocolate cheesecake. It was really good. My mother and I split everything and the bill came to about $35. Since portions are small, I don't think it's a very good place to split stuff; it'll leave you hungry. They have several people wait on you, which feels weird. I don't really understand the benefit of having two waitresses and a busser/runner. But they were all really nice and the atmosphere is good. I'm not entirely sure if I would eat here again. We stopped in for our 15th wedding anniversary dinner. We called for reservations and they were thoughtful enough to ask if it was a special occasion. We said yes... When we arrived I was a bit worried because it was so LOUD up front when we checked in, apparently some of the Detroit Redwing athletes were there and it drew a rowdy crowd. But soon the host led us way back to a romantic table in the rear of the establishment and you would never know it was party time up front. We were surprised by a hand signed anniversary card from the staff and a beautiful setting. The food was AMAZING! We had their spin on the Crab Rangoon and 3 Sushi rolls. I thought for the quality and presentation the food was priced accordingly, but yes it in NOT a cheap sushi restaurant. That being said what we got was the best, freshest sushi I have ever had! Although Red Ginger is a very popular restaurant and my hosts enjoyed (Again) their coconut lemongrass Thai soup with chicken and shrimps, my conclusion was different. I ordered raw fish including tuna, salmon, ell, etc. using chopsticks the slabs of fish were too clumsy to eat politely, and served without a bowl of rice. Whenever we visit TC we try to go to Red Ginger for dinner. It's one of those casual eating places that has a dining room that requires a dress code. It says so on a sign by the door. But if you were like the 80% of people who come here wearing a t-shirt, a pair of shorts, and sandals don't fuss as there is a lounge and bar area. This has a busy good vibe to it. Noise level is more than average but you would not mind it as you come here for the food. Through the years this place has been open, the owners have tweaked their menu from a Japanese-centric to a more Pan-Asian offering. Think Japanese chirashi meets Pad Thai. Personally, I stick to the classic sushi rolls and sashimi items. Do come and check them out if you haven't done so. It may be on the pricey side but don't forget this is a tourist town. Before anything else, make reservations days in advance. Use the app OpenTable or call, but don't take your chances on walking in, especially if your party is more than 2 people. Once seated, you're treated to an amazing culinary experience, one oddly placed in northwestern Michigan however knowing Traverse City's burgeoning foodie scene, it fits and leads. The non-sushi dishes are wonderful as well- I don't eat sushi, so my lettuce wraps appetizer and Kung Pao chicken was well worth the anticipation. Red Ginger is one of my favorite restaurants to go to during lunch happy hour for sushi and drinks. I had the blood orange martini and my partner the red dragon martini. Both are packed with powerful fruit flavors and certainly plenty of alcohol punch! The red dragon had a fancy touch of a raspberry sugar rim, yum! While my clumsy self spilt my drink, I must say the servers to clean up the mess were impeccable. Our server was behind us at the bar and rushed around the corner with a towel to clean up just seconds after it had happened and there was another server as well that was rushing to the scene. I had to convince my boyfriend, who isn't a fan of sushi, to try this restaurant with me. He is known to be quite picky because his father is a professional chef, but I wasn't nervous. First, the service we had was exceptional. Shortly after sitting down, I recognized the beginning of a migraine coming on. The manager (I assume) approached my table and asked if there was anything he could do since he saw me rubbing my temples and making faces. When I told him what was going on, he offered to fetch me some fresh lemon wedges for my water because he too gets headaches and says the citrus helps him. He also recommended a spicy appetizer for the same reason, and we ordered the Dragon Wings (spicy boneless chicken dish with Roquefort cheese spread, YUM YUM YUM). My picky boyfriend was able to order a small plate of beef, which was served with a hot stone to cook the beef to order right there at our table. The sights and smells were amazing, and attracted quite a bit of attention from our neighboring tables. We even traded a taste of the dish for a taste of their sake :) Boyfriend still says it's one of the best meals he's ever had. I had the sushi, and while I didn't try anything outlandish, it was prepared beautifully, and tasted perfect. While it's a little pricy there, it's every bit worth it. If I had lots of extra cash, I know I'd be throwing it at Red Ginger as often as I could, ha! Oh, and by the end of our meal, my headache was gone. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more
