I have played this course twice in the last month. The course was in very good shape. The greens are fast with a ton of elevation difficulty. They added a lot of fun and challenge to the game. The views are awesome (Red Mountain, Downtown, Superstitions, etc..). They could give a few more balls in there driving range bags. We played on a Thursday and we only saw the cart person once during the day. The driving range could use some improvement but overall was decent. We had lunch at the grill afterward and the food was decent. I had the burger which was excellent. The cheese dip was average. read more

Course is a dog track. Hit it in the fairway you are playing off dirt. They had to drag the hoses out to water the greens. You have to play around sprinklers and hoses. No GPS on the carts. Pete Dye is rolling over in his grave Never never again read more

This was a tough 4-star review. It was more like 3.5. This course is fun. It's a Pete Dye designed course. So the greens difficulty and tough Bunkers are expected. The cons: Driving range is in poor shape. The tee box, needs leveling There are some bare spots The pros: The greens are in great shape. The Bunkers are in great shape. The fairways are good. The beverage cart came by three times, which was great. We had lunch afterwards, and it was delicious. I recommend their sweet chili wings. We had a great time, the pace was great also. read more

First time playing this course and was very impressed. While the course was preparing for over-seed soon and was scalped, there was still good bermuda grass on the course. You can tell the course was very well maintained by the grounds crew in the summer or it would've been dirt. I can only imagine how nice the course is in the winter. . Course has a beautiful layout with some really great views of the Valley and of course, Red Mountain. Pace of play was fantastic as we were out early and we were done in 3.5 hours. Rangers were out and about making sure everyone was keeping up with group ahead. Staff was friendly and starter was helpful. Nothing bad to say about this course and I would highly recommend. read more

Played this morning, booked a confirmed 7:29 tee time. Upon arriving was told we were pushed back two groups. Tee boxes were bare and not level. Not appealing to the eye, especially for $184. Very disappointed. Equal to cheap track in regards overall course appearance and maintenance. Shorter course with elevated greens. (Pete Dye) Not enjoyable even though we played well. It started out great when we paid at the pro shop. The guy was super cool. We were a threesome and had two groups of older ladies behind us that were all members. They hit into us on the very first hole. There was a foursome in front of us so we were constantly waiting at every tee box. That was not an issue for us At all. At the third hole, when the cart gal stopped, she bitched at us for parking in the middle of the Path. I said oh I'm sorry, we didn't see you coming. She then said well I guess I'll just mix drinks from the bushes. Wow, Mind you she was not the typical cart girl you would expect at a course like this, or any course. Again, we were a threesome with all foursomes in front of us and waited at every tee box and generally every second shot as well. Then the group of members behind us hit into us one more time. Then they complained to the unfriendly ranger, because one of my buddies was spraying the ball around a little bit. He never really looked for his ball either, cause he's afraid of snakes mostly. So the Ranger came up to us and told us that he should hit first always, to help pick up the pace, lol! We told him that then Rich and I will just have to wait at every shot anyways. Then, at the turn, we went inside to grab a brat and that's it. The Rangers let the seven old ladies go ahead of us. When I spoke to the Ranger, he very rudely said, Well, you went inside. Oh sorry I said we are waiting 10 minutes on every tee box, why would you let them go through. All he could say was that they are members and everybody wants to get home to watch the masters. It ended up taking over five hours, I will never go back to this course. Rude to us we thought because we weren't members. The three of us paid $550 to golf, what a joke!!! read more

I hadnt played this course in over 20 years. And those times were in the Summer when conditions arent expected to be great not like todays round which was in Winter peak season. The course turf, in all areas was very poor for a Pete Dye course that was private if memory serves at one point. Only thing that was nice was we finished round in 2 hours and 50 minutes being the second group off. So sad to see whats happened to this course. They need new management and greenkeeping staff to get this course in appropriate shape for the $120ish price tag. read more

Come for the golf and stay for the food and show. Course was fun and challenging, lunch was good but the show was not so good. The show was a scorpion and a roach going at it on the dining room floor. The scorpion won but thanks to the bartender, they both lost in the end. The bottom of a shoe was a sad end to two gladiators that laid it all out for entertainment. On a serious note, their clubhouse is disgusting. read more

I've been trying to write and photograph various golf courses in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Colorado for the past 4 years. I have played on some fantastic, PGA quality courses as well as local, value driven municipal courses. My goal has been to try to be as subjective as possible. If a course needs some maintenance, I will try to compare the cost of play vs the condition of the course. Red Mountain Ranch golf course, a Pete Dye creation, is a fantastic, scenic, challenging course! The club house and amenities were closed due to the Covid19 pandemic, but the course is fantastic. After checking in, I jumped into a car and headed over to the Starter. He gave us a very warm welcome, asked if we had any questions about the course. We decided to play off the middle tees since this course, like most Pete Dye courses, require more target practice than brute force. True to form, every hole is unique and challenging. Driver off the tee box was NOT the best option on a few holes unless you enjoy searching through various species of cactus! I wish I could say more about the club house, the restaurant and the other facilities but I'm sure that after the pandemic is over, all the services will be up and running with the same level of service that the clubhouse does. Let me just say, THAT is the ONLY reason for 4 stars!! Red Mountain Ranch is located in the far north east corner of Mesa, about 40 minutes from Sky Harbor airport and 20 minutes from Mesa Gateway airport. Please, give this awesome course a try. It is challenging but the vistas and views, condition of the greens, and service staff truly make this course enjoyable read more

By far The worst experience I have ever had on a golf course. As a 8 handicap i don't expect the Marshall to be pushing the pace of play on me (but I understand they don't know that at the start but that is not the point of this poor review). We showed up to the first tee 5 minutes ahead of our tee time and the starter rushed us out saying we were late Because there was a 2some ahead of us and they were rolling up to the green already. I told him no problem our group will catch up (Which we did by hole 3). On hole 7 (a short par 4 362 yards). We are waiting to take our tee shot, after the first two players in our group hit the Marshall rolls up says to us we are 15 minutes behind, I told him we had to wait for the group to get on the green as i am very close to the front of the green And explained the situation which he didn't believe Followed by the statement "We will see on the back 9" in the most rude way possible. By hole 15 we had 2 groups waiting and 1 group teeing off (12 PEOPLE!!) all on the same tee box. The round took us 4hrs 45 minutes pace of play was SLOW as it was. Funny we never did see the Marshall on the back to see the SLOW pace of play!!! I would never recommend this course to anyone. For the price they charge even if the course is somewhat nice the customer serivice was absolutely terrible and they make you feel as unwelcome as possible. read more

Sean King the semi-pro was not willing to have us play a replay rate even though the course was wide-open. The pro shop is more concerned with going home early than booking the course. The priority was about going home early over customer service and making money for the course. I don't know what sort of course has multiple pros and is not maximizing tee times but this course is it. Sean King is a terrible 'pro' and golf course staff member. Period. read more

Absolutely the wosrte golf experience ever. It was so backed up it took us 1:15 to play the first 3 holes. Each tee box was a 10-15 min wait so we gave up. When we drove past each hole headed to the clubhouse there were 2-3 groups waiting at each hole plus a group in each fairway and a group on the green. Told the guy in the pro shop and he didn't even offer to refund part of our money. $150 for 2 of us, HUGE waiste of money. Do not recommend. Added note, our tee time was 12:33 on 1/26/19. At the pace of place it would have taken over 6 house to play 18. We would have never finished before dark. read more

Fun round of golf! Beautiful course! I am an advanced beginner, so I was really intimidated by some of the reviews stating how hard the course was. It's a Pete Dye course, so of course it's hard! Every hole was different & challenging with undulating fairways & greens, but that's what makes it fun. If you want to hit the ball as hard & far as you can, it's not going to work. You have to read the hills & curves, and actually aim. My score wasn't pretty, but I thought it was the most entertaining round I've played on this trip to AZ! read more

The course played tough, which was expected. It was a 5 hour round, no control over that. Then we proceeded to the restaurant for beers and lunch, only to get the check and find an 18% service charge. This wasn't and isn't considered part of the tip. There were four of us. When asked, they said it's standard and is also used for banquets and weddings, which I understand. So after that charge, tip, and tax, you pay an additional 45%. No go for me, avoid it. read more

Course was just over seeded two weeks ago . Pace of play wasv4 hours and 15 minutes . Practice facilities was good but directions were not . We started about 10 minutes late. . Greens were firm and balls would roll a long ways . Greens has a lot of undulations. There are no straight puts . Greens are all elevated. Greens were about an 8 . They did allow us to drive 90 degrees . Fees were 69 plus tax and practice balls for about 84 . Ranger was checking on us but there was no place to go . Food was decent really good fries read more

Firstly Pete dye is a sadist and since this a shorter residential course, he emphasized obstacles to make the course as challenging as possible. So lots of pot bunkers, tiny landing areas in fairways, and rolling greens with big altitude changes. Still for $60 and less than 4 hours on a Saturday I was happy. Decent grill as well with shiner bock on tap and fine sandwiches. read more

Had our wedding here. Venue was very nice and day of staff was great. The planning process with Lorie was terrible. She could not reply to all on our emails even though asking multiple times. She had to revise the event order over and over and has no attention to detail. She tried to charge us for things that had no price in the contract and then gives us a story about how she has to pay her vendors (should have properly written the contract) and then we had to call someone else to get the fee taken off. Last minute she decided to tell us about all the Christmas decor that was never mentioned during our multiple visits there, phone calls and emails. Night of the wedding she completely dropped the ball and forgot to close the bar for 30 minutes (when it was her idea) to close it for the grand entrance and then they tried to close the bar at end of night early. After a long discussion they finally kept it open after we told her that we would contact upper management. Long story short the venue is beautiful, service staff was great, food was very good but Lorie was not. We hired a day of coordinator and thank god we did and didn't have to deal with Lorie the whole night except when she messed up. read more

I have been a member for years and years - never a golf member (have played), but all other levels (thus able to give a complete review), eventually I became a Pool Only member & have recently cancelled my membership entirely. One should first ask yourself, why did I continually "revert back" my membership to a less and less level of privilege? And I think the two stars answers that question. Before joining this club, know that the number one, and almost only, priority at this club is golf. Then tennis. Fitness center is next and finally, & definitely least, the pool. Somewhere in there falls the restaurant. Golf - nice Pro Shop, nice people, nice & challenging course that is well maintained and obvious $99 out of every hundred dollars of membership fees goes to golf. Tennis - lots of nice lighted courts with a very good playing surface. What more could you want... Tennis is easy to maintain & please patrons. Fitness center - Orange Theory with a set of weights and dumbbells less adequate than I have in my garage, few classes, shorter hours, and in need of an update. (My club, in another state, has key card entry with video surveillance, so one can be held accountable but workout anytime, day or night, without supervision.) Pool - beautiful at first sight. Run down upon time after time use. Hours are too short AND not accurate either! Posted hours begin at 4:30am, but still unable to enter with key card at 6:01am!?!? 9pm closing - what are we, in the seventh grade??? Pool is heated, but not from November through February - hope you're not planning on making any exercise resolutions during this period!?!? Hot Tub has, at most, 3 jets that will give any therapeutic relief - I hope no one else shows up while you're trying to soak away some pains!?!? The other 5 or 6 jets might as well be powered by a single hamster, on a wheel, in the back room. Open Air Bathroom lights are nowhere close to timed up with the sun! Still dark in the morning when they turn off BEFORE sunrise and sunset/been dark for a long time at night before they turn on. Do you like camping, because that what it's like - going to the bathroom in the dark! Hope you like cold showers too - I think the manager must have once been a prison warden!?!? Don't worry, if you want a drink to take the edge off, then you can exit the pool, walk around the exact same building to the golf course side and order a drink at that window. (For some reason, it's too difficult to serve the golfers and the pool patrons from two different windows!?!? Golf service is always open - pool service is never open & and these windows are literally 5 feet apart, on opposite sides of the fence surrounding the pool facility, and run out of the same room!?!?) Food - imagine the last, most bland, most basic meal you recently had - now pay $25 per person for that meal. Don't worry, the prices go up from there!!! Now, the prices may be high, but the service is bad. Have a complaint, don't worry, the manager will send you a nice email that reads, "my apologies". There's a toenail in my chili - "my apologies". There's black mold in the fitness center - "my apologies". There's a floating body in the pool - "my apologies". All the grass is dead on the golf course - "my apologies". In conclusion, I'd give the Motel 6 on VanBuren 1 as a resort, so I gave Red Mountain Ranch Country Club 2's. Hope this review helped in your decision making process. read more

I played Red Mountain Ranch Country club a few times in the late 1980's when I first moved to Arizona. I love Pete Dye golf courses and this one was no exception. In the 80's the golf course was semi-private, meaning although they had a membership base they also allowed non-member play. Hence my 2 or 3 rounds Circa 1988. Shortly after that the course went all private and my playing days at Red Mountain were finished unless I bought a home in the community. Since I was only 23 years old at the time that was pretty unlikely. Fast forward to last weekend. I discover that like many private clubs in the valley the golf course is allowing some public play in the summer time. So after a 20 year hiatus, I returned to Red Mountain Ranch Golf Club to find it in exactly the same way I remembered it, Fun! The golf course was in pretty good shape for mid-August. No golf course in Arizona is in great shape this time of year. For golf course maintenance staff the goal is just to hang on and not let it get too bad. I was impressed with the greens and fairways. Again, a few brown spots here and there, but overall excellent compared to other courses this time of year. The golf shop staff was friendly and professional. Although it was 2 o'clock in the afternoon, the beverage cart was still making regular visits. Many golf courses stop on course beverage service after 1 or 2 in the afternoon in the summer. I guess when there are less then 10 players on the golf course it doesn't make sense. But it was nice to see the beverage cart occasionally. As far as the course itself? It's rated at 147 from the tips and 131 from the blue tees. I dont remember it being that difficult of a golf course. Of course I didn't know what slope and rating was back then either. It's a fairly short course being only 6600 yards from the tips and 6100 or something like that from the Blue Tees. But lots of sand, elevated greens, water and other hazards make for plenty of challenging shots. I used every club in my bag that day and that is the kind of golf I like. My buddy even teed off a few times with 6 Iron. I like courses that make you think when you are standing on the tee box. Rather than just reach for the driver every time. Love this course. Hope to play it a few more times before the members return from their summer homes and relegate us weekenders back to the municipal course in the valley. read more

For $120, I would not go back to this course. There were plenty of dead spots. There are much nicer courses for half the price.

Played Red Mountain Ranch today, and my initial impression is that it's an excellent course. It is by far rated the most difficult out of any I've played, at 148 from the tips, and 136 from the blue tees. Even the white tees are 124 or so. I suspect the reason the slope is so high is that there is a premium on accuracy. You don't need to hit it far, as there are four or so 320 yard par 4s, but you don't always have a lot of room to work with. For a semi-private course, I was quite unimpressed with the level of service rendered. There was no beverage cart (not like I use those anyways), and there was no guy ready to swoop in and clean my clubs after the round. The price was fair though, at just $35 for a 10AM tee time. The condition was good for this time of year. There were few dead areas, and the greens rolled true (though not as fast as nearby Longbow or Las Sendas), but it wasn't as lush as either of those neighboring courses. read more

WOW....this is fantastic golf course. It's quite unique and special in that you just don't see golf layouts like this in AZ. Classic Pete Dye. Every hole is a different challenge. You simply cannot pull out the driver on every hole, it tests your mind and mental game. Despite it being a shorter course, there are plenty of hazards which include water, deep bunkers, rolling fairways (you may hit a great drive right down the middle and have a challenging downhill lie) and even railroad ties. All of the par 3's are sensational, a joy to play. Despite the harsh summer weather, the course is holding up pretty well. A little worn down by the AZ summer, but overall it's in terrific condition. The greens are small and tight but roll true. Service is very good, practice balls, friendly staff and starter, cheap summer rates....not sure what they nail you for in the winter, but I'm sure its well over 100 (and deserving so). I really have nothing to complain about...it's as good an experience as you'll get. read more

If this was Pete Dye's first course, it would have been his last. I can't imagine anyone liking this diabolical course. I am a 5 handicap and could not wait to get off of this course. Every hole was as gimmicked up as the one before it. Good shots are not rewarded and a shot that was only a foot off line turned into a double bogey. Greens are all elevated and when the ball rolls off the green, it continues down a cavernous hill. The slopes on the greens make you think you are putting in a bathtub. This was not an enjoyable round. Lots of blind tee shots. I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to play a second round on this course. If you have $80 to throw away, you should probably play this course once to discover what a truly awful golf course design is. If you want to save $ 80, play anywhere else...seriously....don't play this golf course. read more

The golf staff is definitely in need of training on dealing with disabilities as well as sensitivity training. I was not only questioned about my disability, but I was berated in the parking lot (while in my vehicle) by a manager. I was assured this will be rectified by a very sincere GM. The course is definitely challenging, with some narrow fairways and small, undulating greens, but at a 16 handicap, I still managed to shoot a 90. Coming from Boston, we don't have any courses nearly as picturesque or challenging as this and would definitely play it again! Nice enough but course play is extremely slow, 5 hours to play 18. "Cart path only" golf doesn't help with the high handicap golfers hitting from the blue tees, who seem to bog down this course. As a first time golfer on this course, it was frustrating as there is no course layout signage on the holes, nor in the scorecard. Pro shop did not offer us any course layout booklet. My suggestion: find somewhere else to play until they space out their tee times a little more. read more

I heard so many bad reviews and feedback about this course -- that the clubhouse and staff were not nice to women. Well, I have a completely different experience, today. The gentlemen at the clubhouse was nice, had a big smile, and even offered the golf course guide book when he realized this was my first time playing here. The starter and the staff were all super friendly. We had a noon ttime and it took us 4 hours to play the round, no backups whatsoever. One star markdown for dated carts and the very poor service at the Red Mountain Grill. We will be back to play here again. Thanks, everyone! read more

Very picturesque, interesting and challenging Pete Dye layout, complete with moguls, deep bunkers, water, and railroad ties. The course is in decent shape for this time of year. Pace of play is fine, I can attest to, after a few early morning, weekend tee times. Saw two javelina last weekend on the practice green adjoining the first tee, and I'm told there are snakes in the rough, so if you enjoy Arizona wildlife, an extra plus. The food in the grill is really good, having had the Cuban sandwich, chicken quesadillas, and the club sandwich. Service is friendly, fast, and attentive. Personally, wish they had a better selection of draft beers, but you'll undoubtedly find one to your liking. All in all, a terrific desert golf experience, and value for the dollar. read more

On the plus side the course is really pretty at least in terms of the views of the valley, all of the surrounding mountains and vistas. Pro shop was helpful and check in was easy. I didn't enjoy the golf as much as I had hoped. It felt like there was a lot of pressure from the Marshall regarding pace of play and just a lot of information we didn't need about yardages and how long it is and how elevated it is etc. ironically the pace of play was very slow and it took us over five hours to finish the round. What I didn't like about the golf is that I thought the course was unnecessarily difficult. Maybe it just was a bad match for me at my skill level but in my view there are courses that are forgiving, courses that are unforgiving, and then there are courses that are punishing. This one was punishing at least for me. It was a lot of target golf which you sort of expect in the desert but there is a lot of up and down and undulations in the course. You can be in the fairway and still be in a horrible lie because you could be so far down in the gully that you can't even see the pin. And the greens were hard to read and punishing from the standpoint that it was so up-and-down and so steep on edges that any little mistake could put you 30 feet down in a hole on one side and if you chip out or putt across and make a tiny mistake going back the other way you could be 15 feet down in the sand trap on the other side. My son had his wedding here last week. He and his new wife are both active duty so the planning was done by phone and email. Lorie, the event planner, did an awesome job! The wedding was fantastic, food was excellent, decorations, cake, everything was spectacular! All who attended had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend the country club for your wedding. My family hosted my mother's 90th birthday at this venue last weekend. Totally elegant facility with spectacular scenic view! Everyone is still talking about the party. Lori was awesome from beginning to end. Mark was absolutely the best on the day of the event. The entire staff made our family feel welcome and special! The food.....delicious! Tried to get the recipe for the best mashed potatoes I have ever tasted! Didn't succeed! Lol . The only reason it get two stars is the course was in decent shape, not great, decent. We left hole 14 after 4 hours and 15 minutes. The pace of play was painfully slow. To start, we had a 12:58 tee time, went to the starter at 12:50 and he said "they are a couple of groups behind" so we went to the hit balls at the range, where they were out of practice balls, and chipped for a few minutes then went back to the starter before 1:00 where he proceeds to tell us he let another group jump informs of us. Long story short if you don't want to play a 6+ hour round on a mediocre course this isn't the place. read more

I play at a number of courses all around the valley and the state of non-maintenance should be embarrassing to all of you that either own, run or maintain this course. Went here for lunch today. Were told upon sitting down that we would have to hurry as there was an event that would be taking out place. Food was very poor. Their signature "Juicy Lucy" was awful - overcooked and tasteless. Tater tots were cooked in old oil. Quite unfortunate as the facilities are very nice. Will not be back to eat. read more

Had a reservation fro easter Brunch, it was terrible. The General manager think John was his name was a complete ass to us. They was a very poor selection of food. Old Country Buffet would have been way better. Overpriced 20% gratuity added on top of the meal. I wouldn't go there to eat again if it was free. Again the General Manager is a miserable excuse for a human being. If you do go and see him make sure you tell him about this review. read more
