Came down to visit our son and his girl friend at UW-LaCrosse and took them out to lunch. They researched and came up with Red Pines Bar and Grill. Set on a beautiful spot in Onalaska, you feel like you are in the northern woods. Walked in around 1:30pm and were seated right away. We were offered the breakfast menu as it is served until 2pm. There are many mouthwatering options on the breakfast menu. We stuck with the regular menu which had quite a variety. Our server greeted us took our beverage order and tactfully mentioned that she had only started a two weeks ago. The way she stated this was very good- I did not anticipate problems nor did I feel this was a preemptive effort to not care about giving good service. I ordered the pesto linguine with chicken and French onion soup. Later I was told they were out of the French onion soup. I was offered another soup or a salad. I opted for the salad. Salad arrived- and the lettuce appeared well on the way to being wilted... perhaps it was prepped the day before and the plastic wrap was not on it well? It tasted ok. 40 min from placing our order and I am about to inquire about the meals when they come out. I not sure why the order took so long, perhaps the waitress is still learning the timing aspect of tables versus demand in the kitchen. The linguine was GREAT! I have been disappointed in the past with bland cream sauce with a dish like this, but this was excellent, great flavor and the sliced grilled chicken was not tough or over cooked from being in the hot pasta. This place goes way beyond any notion of a bar and grill. The food and service are always fabulous. The drive is short and the view is worth it. Favorites are the pizza (best in the area) and the batter fried haddock (also the best in ANY area). My fellow diners favor the sandwiches, and we all leave filled and happy. Like some other popular places, there may be a wait, but the staff and setting make any wait time pass quickly, and the food - again - is worth it. read more

The food is really, really good. Their walleye is awesome! The service is also excellent. Why don't I give it five stars? I guess for me the "bar" part of the experience makes it a little too rambunctious for my dining tastes. Would that they had a dining room that was completely separated from the noise and action of the bar. But... We were very happy with this restaurant. The setting is very nice and the staff attentive. I enjoyed the meatloaf sandwich and my wife liked her prairie melt (patty melt). The fries were perfect. Warm and inviting little establishment right on the backwaters of the river (Lake Onalaska). We highly recommend Red Pines for people looking for a good pint (they offer a nice selection of local crafts, plus a few of the general domestics) and some great appetizers. We really appreciate that they specialize in local, fresh fish. While you're here, order their Walleye Cheeks and a pound of their wings (Wing Dam). These appetizers will not disappoint, as they're some of the best in the area. read more

3.5 stars this time, but I'd definitely go back for more. My brother's family just moved to the area so we wanted to try a local spot and tried this one based on reviews. We came with a large party, including adults and children. The view of the river is charming and the establishment has a rustic atmosphere. You can tell the place is well cared for. They had live music when we went, which the adults enjoyed, but not our kids so much. Our group was so big (11) it had to be split into two tables and a different table was seated between ours, so I probably wouldn't recommend for larger parties. Our server was very friendly and attentive, but it took quite a long time to get our food after placing our order. There was another table with all adults of 8 who ordered, ate, and paid for their dinner before we even received our food. I ordered the fish tacos and sweet potato fries, which were both delicious! We got our food 20 minutes after the other table of our party got their food. I was sitting with kids under 10 and it's difficult to appease hungry, cranky children. By the time we were done, we'd been there 2.5 hours. They also had a wedding that night so were probably impacted by that. I'll be back without the kids! read more

Love Red Pines....but the last couple of times we've there we've been pretty disappointed. Food and draft beers have been great....BUT the bartenders have NOT been the best. We know they're busy, and understand that....but when they don't even say thanks for our patronage or our attendance, we're starting to think that's it for us coming back, and we're telling our friends about it as well. Atmosphere is great, love our beers on draft, but, gratitude is not a speciality, and it's not like they have to cow down to patrons, but a thank you would be appreciated by us. read more

I always try to go to the Red Pines when I go back from Chicago to Wisconsin to visit the family. The location and food are excellent, and the service tries very hard even though the wait times for food can be a little uneven at times - price of success, I guess. I can't add anything about the great food that others have described, but I am surprised more people don't mention the great beer offerings here. They have a lot more that just the usual mass-produced stuff (though they have that too), which is always really nice to find, but especially in a little tucked-away place like this. read more

Red Pines went from a four + star down to a two star at best with the change in owners. The ribs were one of their signature items our now horrible. Even the beer battered chicken tenders which are normally really good were soggy and not edible. I was going advise the waitress since we couldn't eat the food but she never came back. So, after 40 minutes I had to flag her down to pay the bill and just left. I later called to speak to a manager only to find out they were under new owners. He assured me the food stayed the same and I assure you it hasn't. read more

We stopped by with a party of six on a Sunday afternoon during a Packers game. The place was full but we were quickly seated with the option of the main area or the semi-enclosed patio. We opted for the quieter patio as no one was a Packers fan and it was warm for December. The food arrived relatively quickly for as busy as the restaurant was at the time. For appetizers we ordered the fried cheese curds, these were the best I have ever had both the cheese and the batter were perfect. I ordered the Red Pine Burger which was very good. My companions order different sandwiches and everyone was happy, especially with the Walleye. If you are in the area I highly recommend giving Red Pine a try. It was a great atmosphere, but I suspect the atmosphere is even better when the weather is warmer. read more

First visit and enjoyed it very much. Met some long time friends who coincidentally visit Red Pines often, as it's one of their favorites. Old Fashioneds and Bloody Mary's were served up and I'd highly recommend trying one of their delicious Bloody Marys, served Wisconsin style with a beer chaser. Entrees at the table included the Walleyed Pike - rave reviews from the two that had it. I had the lake perch (deep fried with a light, taste enhancing batter) - WOW - what a plate full and some of the tastiest I've enjoyed. A dinner of smoked catfish was also enjoyed. Cheyenne was our server - she was attentive and prompt - contributing to our fun experience and first visit to the Red Pines Bar & Grill. We came here a few months ago back and immediately loved the look and feel of the entire restaurant, makes you feel right at home. We were seated right away and given waters and our Drink orders taken. My boyfriend wanted me to try one of their famous Huge Pretzels with him. I had to only do 4/5 because our waitress I believe forgot about us before we could even order the Pretzel. I understand because it was busy though it was around 10 minutes when she noticed we were sitting there without food and she did apologize. We then ordered our Pretzel and it came very quickly within 10 minutes. The Pretzel came out on a rack because it was that large! It also came with a Queso sauce and a delicious Honey Mustard Sauce to dip in. Went to Red Pines with a group of friends (7 total) on a Friday night. My wife and I have been there before, like the food and the service has always been good. As expected, it was full but not overwhelmingly busy. We ordered two of the sampler appetizers for the table. The first came in reasonable time, it was delicious. The second one came a little after our main courses arrived. No explanation for the delay, just a shrug of the shoulders, not acceptable! Also, two of us ordered a cup of soup. They came about 10 minutes after our main courses. Come on, that's ridiculous. The food was good but the timing was terrible!! Will have to think twice before going again. read more

My daughter took me here for Mother's Day. We've been here several times before and the food is always really good and today was no exception. They were busy but the service was tremendously slow. We have never had to wait that long for our food. The kitchen must have been short staffed. Our waitress was wonderful and very attentive. We were not in a hurry but wow! This place is a favorite of mine! My only complaint is that every time I've went, the hostesses seem a little out of it, anti-social, timid, or clueless. They don't typically give u an estimated wait time unless you ask for it. The are typically busy but it is because they are soo good! you can even sit outside in a heated part and they give you a small blanket! It is so cozy. Boyfriend ordered the fish and I always ordered the blackened chicken pita which is SOO GOOD! Very nice just to sit and chill. But it does get busy. Saw your restauant online and decided to give it a try. My husband and I are tired of chain restaurants and since we were in La Crosse for the day wanted to try a "local". We were greeted with a smile at the door and seated promptly. Our server, Ashley, did a great job for us. We had a Pines (?) burger and a BBC burger. Both were wonderful and cooked perfectly. Burgers were not dried out like you would get other places. Our orders came with homemade chips that were hot and delicious. We had so much food, we took a box home. They ran out of the homemade carrot cake and seeing as it was our first time there, the very personable owner gave us my son's dessert for free!
