The entrance is fantastic. Upon enter is the bar area and the windows open all the way up to give you an outdoor feel. It's beautifully furnished with an eclectic decor. The staff was really friendly. We had a reservation and was seated in the patio area and I was very pleased until the water started dripping from outside into my head. We ordered cornbread , lamb chops, and conch salad (which we were told was spicy and made Bahamian style) as appetizers. I had the hot honey salmon atop spinach sautéed with garlic and lemon, and black seafood rice. My friends ordered Pepper Pot, snapper fillet with curry sauce, kale salad and chicken wings. The presentation was good. The salmon was tasteless as was the rice with very little seafood in it and the spinach was overly bitter. The pepper pot was delicious with lots of flavor. All I can say is make a reservation please!! This is a popular spot and they are always booked especially on a Saturday night. However, this was a last minute recommendation from a local to New Yorker so we had to try it. Lucky for us it rained for 20 minutes and someone canceled their plans yay lol. As a New York native, I had heard so many good things about this restaurant in Harlem and was super excited to hear they opened a location in Miami. Therefore when my friend came to visit, this was my go-to place to impress her. I was grateful to find metered street parking pretty easily in front of Red Rooster. We could hear the DJ spinning classic hip hop tracks before we even walked in the door. It was definitely a vibe. We spoke to the host and they were booked. It was a Friday night and they weren't taking any more walk-ins as they were awaiting their last reservations. Fortunately we were able to snag two seats at the bar. My friend and I love seafood so we ordered the CCC fritter appetizer along with the fried yard bird and macaroni and cheese which are two of their most popular dishes. The portions were large enough for two females to share. The food came out extremely quick. So quick we wondered how long they were under a heat lamp waiting to be ordered? We enjoyed the flavors of the food but none of it tasted fresh. We were both deeply disappointed. In fact my friend wasn't even that pleased with the cocktail she ordered. Doors open at 5 supposedly - wasn't really allowed in until 5:05; a bit picky I know but there was a line waiting outside. The decor was really nice and the friendly hostess recommended sitting at the bar for happy hour. It was a fun set up. The bartender was cool but a bit backed up right away. I ordered a drink, a couple small bites, and the yard bird. The drink was awesome. The corn bread was just okay and CCC fritters were delicious. The biggest disappointment was the yard bird. It's two leg quarters that are fried with a baked bean type dish as a side. The baked bean dish was cold, not even warm. The first leg quarter was good. Nice and crispy - cooked well. My friend brought me here because I have been wanting to try it. I love good fried chicken. We were seated immediately on a Wednesday evening and sat in the patio area because it was very loud in the dining and bar area. We started with Marcus' cornbread which I enjoyed very much. I like a hint of sweetness in my cornbread and this did not disappoint. The fried yardbird, though plentiful and flavorful, was rather greasy and we used napkins to remove as much oil as we could. I enjoyed the dill pickles served with it. Nice touch. Red Rooster in Harlem accomplished this brilliantly and this outpost in Miami aims to do the same while delighting diners' palates. The space is stunning: red leather, attractive lighting, a handsome bar to sip a hand-crafted cocktail. On a recent visit I had a great skinny, spicy margarita, and it hit the spot. I struck up a conversation with the singer who performs in the Sunday brunch, and she was welcoming and a blast to talk to. I had a lovingly fried piece of chicken with a biscuit as my own happy hour accompaniment. On my way out there was a joyful, chatty man outside asking for money. Many people would be put off by his presence. I saw it as part of Overtown's transition and the dance that ensues between newcomers and incumbents during the process of gentrification. Ok let me first say I'm a HUGE fan of Marcus Samuelson and we've been to the Red Rooster in Harlem several times (every time we go to NYC we book reservations). We went to DC when he was opening his restaurant in that area but things didn't work out sadly. So obviously we think this guy can do no wrong. I was both excited and nervous when I heard he was opening up a restaurant in Overtown. Excited, because it's in my home state and nervous because I wasn't sure we had the crowd to appreciate his menu. I'm soooo happy I was wrong about that last part. Everytime we've ordered from there it's been full and the food is amazing. The greens have a sort of "creamy" flavor to them and I loved them (and I don't like greens usually!"). The fish had a crispy skin, was seasoned to perfection and the ribs were out of this world, bursting with flavor. We've only done take out bc we still aren't too crazy about eating in public during this pandemic so we sadly haven't had the oxtail. (They only offer it as an in-person dining option). But I'm counting down the days to when I can sink my teeth into another of Marcus's delicious creations. The ambience isn't pretentious but appropriately hip and the vibe is warm and welcoming. We felt like we were exploring a taste of the Caribbean with every bite. Our server provided mouth watering descriptions of every dish she recommended and they did not disappoint. This was my 3rd visit, husband's 1st. We sat outside and it was my first outside seating here. Great ambiance and music. The bar is a little chaotic in service but the happy hour menu is worth it if you get there earlier. I did send back my pasta but the local snapper meal was great! The lamb was overcooked for my liking but it was a happy hour small bites order, not sure if picking temperature was an option and we did not ask. I came to Red Rooster with high expectations since I've visited both their New York and Shoreditch locations. Being that I'm gluten free, I was concerned as the menu doesn't specify GF items, and I knew I would be missing out on some big menu items like the corn bread, Mac and cheese, and fried chicken :( There really wasn't anything I could have as an appetizer, so I went with oysters from the raw bar and drinks. As my main meal I was please to know that the Grilled Yellowtail Snapper was GF... and this was the highlight of the night. It comes with charred gooseberry salsa, avocado and coconut tea - I was truly amazed with each bite. I paired it with the jerk sweet potato (it's only half a potato, small serving) and forever cooked greens... those greens are life changing. The ambiance on a Friday night was grown and sexy, with the DJ playing some of my favorite R&B songs. I also must've tried about 4 different drinks and loved them all. My server, Isaiah, was so attentive with my gluten allergy, and even asked the kitchen to give me a GF version of their Viking of the Keys dessert - a key lime curd. The bad news is, I wish they had more gluten free items (I'd sing even more praises if I could have some cornbread), but I don't use that against them in making a review. The good news is the GF items were so delicious that I'll be coming back just for them. And in my 2x of coming for happy hour and 3x between having lunch and dinner the one consistent thing here is that service will be SLOW! I have been to literal bars in Ireland in St. Patrick's Day that has faster service. Let's not get mistaken I've been there when it's been slow and when it's been busy. They all equal the same outcome =SLOW service. However, the issue is when every check comes with 22% automatic gratuity for every party no matter size you would think some level of service would but included. You would also think a restaurant that got the Bib Gourmand would do better but-- NOPE. Now the food, the food is definitely "gourmet looking" but the flavors are standard and with very little unique qualities. I'm chalking it up to the fact that they opened very recently, but everyone seemed lost. The hostess seemed confused and gave us dinner menus instead of brunch menus, our waiter took 10 minutes to make it to our table to greet us or bring us water and the food runner took our appetizer to the wrong table. They weren't slammed by any means (yes, there were other people there, but lots of empty tables, too), so it's not because they were mega busy. The food was good, but I've had better of everything elsewhere. The cornbread is okay, but really only stands out because of the spiced rum butter. The fried chicken and waffle was tasty, but not mind-blowing. The dish that truly wowed me was the biscuits and gravy with collard greens and fried oysters - very unique, with an incredible combination of flavors. To understand this restaurant you have to know a little about the historic neighborhood it is in. Overtown was incorporated as a colored neighborhood in 1896 during segregation. It was the place where Henry Flagler's black railroad workers lived while building the infrastructure of Miami. Overtown is the second oldest neighborhood in Miami. During the 1920's, it was home to D.A. Dorsey, one of the first black millionaires in the south. After WWII it became the epicenter of black culture and was known as the Broadway of the South. Many famous entertainers stayed here when performing in Miami like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole. In the 1950's the area suffered an economic decline and in the 1960's many residents were displaced by the construction of I-95. Almost 40 percent of the people live in poverty. Which brings us to Marcus Samuelsson. Chef Marcus Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia. He and his sister were separated from their biological family during the Ethiopian Civil War and subsequently adopted by a Swedish family. Marcus became interested in cooking through his Swedish maternal grandmother. From there his career has been a rocket. Among his many accolades is being the youngest chef ever to receive a three star restaurant review from the New York Times. Eight years later the James Beard Foundation named him the best chef in New York City. In 2010 he opened his restaurant the Red Rooster in Harlem. He calls his kitchen "my laboratory, my studio, my church." I got to see Marcus Samuelsson at the South Beach Food and Wine festival last year (thanks Yelp). He was throwing out shirts with Guy Fieri. I was so excited for the opening of Red Rooster Overtown, an endeavor four years in the making. It was set to open in March and then Covid hit shutting down plans to open. Instead Samuelesson partnered with Food Rescue U.S.A. and chef José Andrés to work with Andrés's World Central Kitchen a nonprofit organization that feeds communities during times of disasters. The restaurant fed over 110,000 meals to the Overtown community during Covid. In June they were able to open the ice cream shop next store. I am happy to report Red Rooster is in full swing now. I grabbed my adventurous foodie friend and we headed to Miami. If you are lucky you might find street parking but my friend generously sprang for the valet parking ($10). The restaurant is in the renovated historic Clyde Killins Pool Hall. If you read my reviews you know I love history and this place is full of it. There are touches everywhere, historic photos on the wall, pool balls on a shelf to honor when the building was a pool hall. There are two bars, and indoor dining room, a VIP room where Queen B's sister Solange has dined, and an outside covered patio with a 30 foot tall tamarind tree that is over 50 years old. The kitchen is open so you can see all of the action. The restaurant is just stunning. This may have been the best meal I have ever had. It was the first time I have ever had food executed at this level. I started off with the Glady's Knight & the Sips ($14) cocktail which was the only thing I didn't love. It had vodka, watermelon juice, melon syrup, and lemon juice. It wasn't sweet but it was strong. Their most famous dish is the fried chicken called the Yardbird ($24) but we had other things in mind. For our meal my friend and I shared everything so we could try the most dishes. We started off with the Marcus Cornbread with rum butter ($7). To me cornbread is that dry throw away thing you get with your BBQ. Here it is something to be savored. The smell was intoxicating and the taste was life altering. Our next course was the Accra Fritters with conch, corn crab, and collard greens ($12). I find conch to be chewy but not here. The fritters were crisp and light as air. A point of pride with a soul food restaurant is the macaroni and cheese and the one here with aged cheddar, chive, and black pepper ($9) was a standout. For our main course we had the Pig Rib Griot ($23) Florida heritage pork, crunchy djon, djon, crimson papaya pikliz, and kumquat. The flavor was bursting with color in my mouth. We probably would have kept ordering but we were so full that we couldn't eat another bite. There was a lot of moaning throughout the meal. Our server was Diana, Goddess of the hunt. She could not have been nicer or more attentive with classy touches like changing out our silverware between courses. So many people stopped by our table to make sure we were happy, other servers and managers. They seemed to take happiness in our happiness. I felt so welcomed and pampered. One of the BEST dining experiences I've had in Miami. From the moment you walk in you can tell that you will be enjoying your time at Red Rooster. I love trying new dishes and this place has a spin on many classic home dishes that will make your mouth water. The Malta marinated chicken was a true spectacle to order and eat, soft moist with a savory outer crispy crust. The Mac n cheese is so damn good. The deviled eggs were my favorite appetizer but my friend loved the chicken fried green tomatoes and my sister the cornbread! So in the end everything we ate was worth the time. My heart hurts writing this review because i really, really, really wanted to love this place. I mean they have the vibe going, everyone is beautiful and melanated so i was like yasssssss!!!! The service was live but alas the food was lacking. I came all the way from Houston Texas to try this place. I wanted so badly to love it. They were having brunch with a pop up menu so my group decided to try the donut appetizer along with the chicken sliders and the etoufee and grits. The donuts came out and although they were filled with caramel they were dry. I would suggest heating them up an that would have made a world of difference. The chicken sliders were ehh. They had something on there pickled which gave them a good taste but unfortunately the chicken was overcooked and the biscuit or cornbread or whatever it was on was soaked because of all the grease. It was still tasty but not banging. The etoufee and grits had to be the most disappointing. I did enjoy the fresh veggies they added with the squash but grits are suppose to be creamy. When you added this type of etoufee with a watery roux its just a grit/ etoufee soup and thats not the business. I also added lobster which was good but not enough to save the dish. The saving grace were the drinks, which were pretty darn good. I will say for a 130$ ( gratuity is already included) i wanted to be wowed but i was underwhelmed. I do wish them the very best and who knows the dinner menu may be so much better but for my experience i will say i probably would not return based on what i ate today. Wheeew!!!! First of all, Fried Chicken... No place in miami has such great fried chicken. I loved Joe's Stone Crab fried chicken but this beats that fo sho! The corn bread was poppin too. The deviled eggs looked great but I didn't try it. They also have a great happy hour so rock that too. The customer service is A1 10/10 Ambiance is amazing clad in black art and makes you feel like you've time traveled back in time. 10/10. Food is 10/10!!!! read more

Checked out this place on a whim. Restaurant is beautiful and service was amazing! The best part, of course, was the food. We started with the cornbread and deviled eggs which kicked the meal off right. For entrees we had the honey hot chicken and the southern pasta. When I talk about good, I mean it!! I appreciate places with great food and amazing service. Makes you feel valued. Recommend it entirely. read more

Went here for my cousin's 40th birthday dinner and what would've been a great night, was a terrible one simply because of the lack of quality in the food. A $40 plate looked as if it was free and the expectation/experience was missed. I really wanted to love this place but the ball was dropped, not to mention it was a rather large party and they knew ahead of time. Sadly I won't be returning unless it's a random night which I highly doubt. read more

To begin, food and service aside, this is such an iconic restaurant. The décor and feeling you get by being there is something bigger than I am able to put into words. You can just tell how every piece of furniture, every color chosen, every piece of art was hand selected to create something unique and that stands apart in excellence and with such a strong sense of culture. We were fortunate enough to get a private tour of the restaurant, upstairs included and the magic is just spread into every part of it. On a separate note, I have heard that they have officially opened up their lounge upstairs and the nostalgic yet timeless feeling they have created with the décor has me super excited to go! I believe it's open only on weekends at night until 3am but I'm not 100% sure. Now, the food is what I am sure is you are most interested in. The food is AMAZING! We were fortunate enough to get a late seating and just in time to order a few brunch items. We had the Beach Bird Seafood Tower and those deviled eggssssssss, ya'll don't understand how much I loved them. My mother in law has some serious competition. The tower also had their yard bird that is just so full of flavor. Another outstanding dish was their French toast. We weren't able to do the chicken and waffles because they didn't have any more waffles prepped at the time but they substituted the waffles for the French toast and boy oh boy, it was incredible! Both the chicken and the French toast were so full of flavor. On to the service side of it, it was okay. Being that we were accommodated so close to closing, I will not judge them too hard on service and will certainly give it another try -mainly because the food and vibes are so incredible. However, I will say that, coming from a hospitality background, I understand the want to end your shift and not wanting that last table but you need to give the same energy, service and attention to all of your tables. The very first one until the very last one. It kills the experience for guests when you drop your steps of service. The server wasn't very attentive. The music was turned lower. The busser was clearing tables, extremely slowly,  while putting the dish tub on the table. It's simple things that just take away from the magic and experience of dining out. Nonetheless, I do plan on returning and still highly recommend experiencing it. Just try to get an earlier reservation. read more

I'm so thrilled to see a spot like this in Miami, especially in Overtown, the heart of our city's black community, so rich in history, art and culture. Dined at Red Rooster for Sunday brunch, and it was a lovely experience. The entire space is beautifully decorated. There's indoor and outdoor seating. I'm glad I made reservations for outdoor seating, as the inside got quite crowded. Reservations are highly recommended, because the place gets packed. Food - I ordered C.K.'s Chicken and Waffles (crispy yardbird, marbled waffle, pickled cabbage and jerk syrup). The chicken was well-seasoned, and was served hot and very crispy. I also tried the Baked French Toast was good as well, loaded with plantain foster puree. Drinks - I ordered the Garvey Rum Punch. I was expecting it to be a little sweeter, but it definitely packed a punch. Vibe - There was old school R&B music playing throughout the restaurant, and then a live band started to play. The patio gives you a lush, tropical vibe with plants cascading along the walls. Service - Very polite, friendly staff. Everyone was wearing masks. We were greeted, and thanked for coming as we walked out. Our server was very nice, friendly, and approachable. Parking - There is street parking, along with a fairly large parking lot on the side of the restaurant. Restrooms - Fairly clean, one-stallers. As I was walking to the car, I discovered their little creamery (ice cream parlor). Have to give that a try next time! read more

The Mac and cheese with the crab addition is worth every $. Just do it. The yardbird and biscuits was to die for as usual. The hot honey salmon on collards and cornbread dumplings was very good. The only disappointment was no one knew what I meant when we asked for the cornbread ice cream. Omg that was the best and I hope they ad it back to the rotation. read more
