Fire-pit and paver pathways around the pond
Michelle K.

Red Roots does incredibly high quality work. Worth every penny! We are so pleased with how our backyard turned out. Beautiful paver pathway around our existing koi pond, an awesome fire-pit area, dining and seating areas surrounded by roses, hydrangeas and beautiful flowers that attract butterflies & hummingbirds. As well as avocado trees, citrus, and lush lawn areas. Before Red Roots we had major drainage issues in our backyard. The crew came in, leveled & graded our whole yard and installed a very thorough drainage system. They do it the right way. They do not cut corners! They also installed sprinkler/drip system and communicated thoroughly where each zone was and how long and how often to water everything. We had one sprinkler that leaked and fixed it promptly. As with any job, there are always hiccups and problems that come up. Eddie always kept me in the loop, was very patient, and always came up with a solution. Even when we needed to change our plans, Eddie made the adjustments happily. Also, did I mention how jolly the entire crew was? Always a smile, very friendly and hard working. Our backyard is a beautiful park and we can't thank Eddie and his crew at Red Roots enough. Highly recommend! -Michelle

Guillermo and his crews planted 4 gigantic trees in 5-feet x 5-feet box for our landscaping project. He surveyed our backyard twice with Eddie, then the arborist Lee came again to explain everything and helped us picking out Coastal Live Oak trees & a beautiful Arbutus Marina tree at their nursery. Both Guillermo and Lee were so knowledgeable and patient that we ended up with 4 enormous big trees. Kudos to the project manager Roman. He's articulate, detail oriented, and extremely professional. He communicated with us during and afterwards with prompt response. Last but not the least, their team were absolutely the hardest working, humble and funny guys: Carlos! Mario! Condrado! Javier! Elmer! Alberto! Adan! Raul! and Angel! Antonio! Thank you all :-)

I spoke with a friend about our experiences at Johnson's, and we both agreed, it feels like walking into an old western saloon where everyone knows "you ain't from around these parts!" I was looking to buy a magnolia, but wanted to know what the differences were, which is better for our environment, so I approached an employee who tried to avoid eye contact with me until he could do it no longer. He started stammering when I asked if he knew anything about the trees I had considered contenders. He fumbled with his walky-talky to try to find someone else to help me, but spotted (who I found out later was the manager) watering plants in the vicinity. He asked her if she could help and she replied rudely with "WHAT?" as she clearly saw me (the customer) asking a question. He stammered nervously and she followed up with "What do you want?" I jumped in and asked my questions about which is best and she said, "They're all pretty much the same." I asked if any were better for our climate/environment and she said with an attitude, "We don't sell anything that doesn't grow around here." She then curtly turned away and went on with watering the plants. I did not feel copacetic with her "customer service," so I bought my tree and decided not to go back. I would rather go to an establishment with less selection, but better service. Also, the prices are on the higher side for some things, but reasonable for others, it just depends on what it is. Either way, Home Depot works for me from now on, and if they don't have what I want, I'll research somewhere other than Johnson's. It's a shame, too, because the place is like walking through a botanical garden, only the vibe given by the staff is that "it ain't big enough for the both of us!"

Beautiful quality, incredibly healthy, already nearly taller than the established shrubs, and very reasonably priced at $129. They helped load it, answered questions, and made the whole process easy. All I have left to do is widen the hole I already dug. You can see a dip in the existing row from an earlier Photinia replacement several years ago from Costco. Love Costco but sometimes you don't want to wait. Thanks Chris!

We ran into some difficulties at the start due to a last-minute cancellation by Matt and some unresponsiveness through email. When we voiced our concerns, Matt really stepped up to ensure our concerns were met. He immediately refunded us for the cost of the service, and he offered to meet with us at no cost. We ended up taking a 30 minute video chat with him, and Matt was super helpful in explaining various options. When we realized that his typical project scope was a bit bigger than what we wanted to spend, Matt was very gracious in connecting us with other contractors and designers. Despite the early hiccups, we got the sense that Matt is a genuine guy who is more interested in doing the right thing rather than making quick buck. We really appreciate his thoughtfulness, and we will definitely consider engaging with his services again in the future!

The virtual call was perfect for our project, we provided Matt with pictures of the backyard space as well as a video walkthrough. He took this information as well as our preferences for how we envisioned the space to be used to come up with a 2D design. He also recommended materials and local contractors. We contacted one of the contractors a few weeks later and finished the project with them in about 2 months. I highly recommend the Virtual Consultation for smaller projects with Matt. His feedback for our questions and experience with similar projects were very beneficial to starting this backyard project for us.

We had a…read morepond for 20 years and because of the design, tree roots were able to grow through and cause huge leaks. I was referred by a local koi expert (Rick Blazo) to the owner of Pond Magic, Esau as the best designer. He built a beautiful Oasis for my koi. It is truly a stunning landscape architecture master piece. Beautiful lighting, plants, stonework. The neighbors are convinced we have a natural spring in our front years! It's also predator proof. His employees were respectful, kind, quiet (no loud music) and we were able to have guests in our air bnb without interruption! This was even with a back hoe, 10 foot hole, large rock delivery etc. AMAZING COMPANY! We have worked with 4 other Koi Pond design/maintenance companies (at least) and POND MAGIC hit it out of the park!!! Amazing service and STUNNING results. THANK YOU!

I just filed a complaint with BBB and want to spread the word to prevent other people from having same experience . We spent $1600 to have our pond cleaned only to have it broken and unable to use. The only Magic from this company was in the fact that they made our $$ and pond disappear.
