And Marty and his crew did exceptional work, there every morning and doing a thorough clean up each afternoon. Red Roots does incredibly high quality work. Worth every penny! We are so pleased with how our backyard turned out. Beautiful paver pathway around our existing koi pond, an awesome fire-pit area, dining and seating areas surrounded by roses, hydrangeas and beautiful flowers that attract butterflies & hummingbirds. As well as avocado trees, citrus, and lush lawn areas. Before Red Roots we had major drainage issues in our backyard. The crew came in, leveled & graded our whole yard and installed a very thorough drainage system. They do it the right way. They do not cut corners! They also installed sprinkler/drip system and communicated thoroughly where each zone was and how long and how often to water everything. We had one sprinkler that leaked and fixed it promptly. As with any job, there are always hiccups and problems that come up. Eddie always kept me in the loop, was very patient, and always came up with a solution. Even when we needed to change our plans, Eddie made the adjustments happily. Also, did I mention how jolly the entire crew was? Always a smile, very friendly and hard working. Guillermo and his crews planted 4 gigantic trees in 5-feet x 5-feet box for our landscaping project. He surveyed our backyard twice with Eddie, then the arborist Lee came again to explain everything and helped us picking out Coastal Live Oak trees & a beautiful Arbutus Marina tree at their nursery. Both Guillermo and Lee were so knowledgeable and patient that we ended up with 4 enormous big trees. Kudos to the project manager Roman. He's articulate, detail oriented, and extremely professional. The service I received from Red Roots was awful. They put plants in with cables not far under the dirt, did not put down plastic before planting, which resulted in lots of weeds. In addition, the people actually doing the work couldn't understand me very well when I asked questions because they didn't understand English. They did a terrible job with everything!!! A few of the plants they put in were not great choices because they were planted in direct sun and died. When I asked the manager to replace the plants he said he would, but never came back to do the job. The work was WAY over priced $18,000. read more

Either their website sucks or they don't care about getting new business. Seems like they're too busy to take on new clients. That's ok....guess I'll go with the other company that has also been doing plenty of work for new houses in my neighborhood. another reviewer below also commented on the same communication problem. We contacted Red Roots to do some masonry on the front of our house as well as fully redo the landscape on our front yard. They referred me to a few landscape architects to do the design work. We worked with Karen to come up with the design for the yard. Her plans were an excellent likeness to what I was wanting, we only had to make one revision and she was very responsive & got me a final plan that I loved. As far as the masonry...it was hard to get a conceptual plan, but Relly and I came up with a plan that we both felt would work for our house. When I got my quote I was surprised by how expensive everything was going to be. We worked together and made some adjustments to get the price to a place that worked. Once we went into contract, Relly was very helpful & responsive on walking me through the process. I had a hard time picking out the stone for the house, but Relly kept the ball rolling. He made sure I made the trek up to Mountain View to visit a showroom that had all the stonework displayed. Once I made that decision the rest of the process was easy! The crews that did both the masonry & landscape were very nice and respectful. At the end of every day they made sure we had clear walk ways in & out of the house. The masonry was a dusty mess, but at the end of the work week they would clean off the porch & driveway which was very nice & unexpected. The end result of the masonry is exactly what I wanted & we love it!! The landscape portion of the project was lead by Lee. What a gem!!! I have nothing but great things to say about Lee! He took Karen's plan and made a few adjustments with plant placement. I honestly loved all of his suggestions. We had a rock retaining wall installed & Lee made a few adjustments to make it look better. And when I wanted a few adjustments he & the crew made the adjustments without a complaint. I worked with this company as they came across professional and committed on good quality work. My project was a complete landscaping solution which included drainage, pavers, turf, lots of planting etc. These guys were expensive than their competitors and quality was poor. They made many mistakes. They damaged my roof gutters, lot's of plants died, sealer they applied on pavers did not last even a week. When I asked them to come fix their issues that wanted to charge me additional for it. Please don't work with this company or you'll regret it! read more

I don't know where to begin as our entire back yard, save a couple trees, was gutted and redesigned. The project took almost 3 months and cost almost as much as we paid for our home 32 years ago!!! I do know when I step out the back door I feel like I have entered a peaceful dream. My husband and I knew what we wanted, and had resources set aside ...but we were terrified to go forward, as we were fresh from dealing with some bad experiences with contractors. We retired last year, and spend a tremendous amount time in the yard. I have issues with balance, and my back and the our yard was becoming an accident waiting to happen. We have lived in this 1966 tri-level home for over 30 years. Each previous owner had added their touch, and the yard was a combo of many projects, lol. All falling apart. One day after catching my foot in the cracked patio, I had it. I looked for landscape contractor, and chose Red Roots for the first interview. They were local, had good reviews and had their own crews. After speaking with owner,Memo, we just went with it. We hired Cammie Brown of Serenity by Design to design yard , and hired Red Roots to do the work. The project entailed constructing a side fence with retaining wall, as our neighbors yard was over a foot and 1/2 higher than ours. The fence itself is a masterpiece. They tore the entire yard down and out. Constructed a trex deck off the dining room that is enclosed with 5 steps that descend onto a patio of pavers that wrap around the entire back of home and the entire side yard. They built a patio cover that is part of the home. The ceiling of arbor is interlocking clapboards, and painted an off white.. A rotating fan with light and dimmer was installed. New roofing matched to existing roofing. Four columns supporting arbor were wrapped, and have stacked ledgestone supports that are like small tables. They installed gutters and additional drainage. The yard off the patio is held back with 5 curved retaining walls, with caps that serve as seating. They are the perfect level!!! There are two sets of stairs, one in center off patio that goes to lawn area, the other set of stairs goes up to a small round paver patio. The stairs are a work of art. Each step must weigh a ton of natural ledge stone. They were hand chiseled to fit. It was agonizing just to watch them put these onto place. It was exacting, heavy work. One group of workers must have spent 2 weeks on the stairs alone!!! They look natural, like nature placed them there. They are abour 6ft long each, with 6" pitch. Amazing work. Red Root's tile, paver and retaining wall skills are stellar! Each retaining wall was covered with stacked ledge stone...hundreds of piecesfitted like a puzzle. These guys are good! Before everything, French drains, sewer lines, irrigation, electrical for lighting were installed. A natural looking, 800 gallon recirculating pond with high waterfall was artfull installed by Lee and crew. The pond has a maximum depth in center of over 2 feet, but the whole structure and surrounding planted area takes up a lot of yard. One of the retaining walls are the front of pond. So I can sit there and watch fish, relax and read. It is a sanctuary. The pond was designed so natural one might find it coming out of the woods. Boulders, creek stone naturally guide the waterfall. Pond is complete with caves for fish, high/low areas, a little lagoon for lilies. This was my dream. I told them I wanted a pond with waterfall,and it had to look natural. Lee went to work and created something out of Sunset magazine, but better. He has a love and natural instinct for this work, so it just unfolded. There are gardens on each side of pond with grasses and colorful, native plants. There will be tons of color each season. Oh, and they put in a planting area where I quickly planted onions, green onions and garlic. It is off another retaining wall, so it is higher, and easier to tend. Some projects had to be tweeked, or redone a bit, but it was done quickly and only to improve. City permit inspections passed first time! I highly recommend Red Roots for your landscape dreams. I think the design, construction and detail aside..one of their strong points are their employees and craftsmen. They came everyday, mon-Fri, 7am to 4pm without fail. Some saturdays. Men worked non stop, through some pretty awful heat in July and August. They broke for a lunch onsite, and went right back to work. The work ethic was impressive and appreciated. The workers were always pleasant. My husband and I are tough task masters. We are detail oriented, demanding of perfection and I have a curse of noticing the smallest flaw. I am pretty tough. I want the job done right, done once, and done to my specifications. When they leave the job, I dont want to have to call anyone back to fix anything. Red Roots was recommended by our landscape architect and what a fantastic recommendation. They are a family owned business who did their utmost to exceed our expectations. I could talk to the owner and the field supervisor was always available. We live on an acre and our backyard was in disrepair. From beginning to completion (which was done earlier than we expected) we were treated with compassion and respect which I hope we returned. Every detail of our project was executed with vast knowledge and care. They have their own tractors, not rented, so they were always available. My husband could not believe how diligent they were in grading our whole backyard and preparing for the lawn area. We had a drainage issue and they were knowledgeable in resolving that issue. Red Roots discussed and made some modifications of our plan to make our backyard more feasible. I really am enjoying the irrigation system they installed- able to make modifications on my cell phone! We just completed a full landscaping job including massive demo, trenching (to replace a broken sewer line), new driveway, patios, pavers, grading, arbor, fencing, lighting, drainage, sprinkler system, lawns and plants. The job took about 7 weeks and we couldn't be happier. Both our front and back yards looks absolutely amazing. Nearly the entire neighborhood has stopped by to compliment us on the work and we're still having people drive by just to check out the yards. We had an architect do all of the design work up front to avoid any surprises as to what we were looking to accomplish. Guillermo "Memo" Banuelos and his team were amazing to work with. Their professionalism and attention to detail was absolutely top-notch from the beginning to end. Were there surprises and a few frustrations along the way? Sure. No project is perfect and every project requires a tremendous amount of communication. Memo and team were extremely responsive to our needs and concerns as the project progressed. There were several instances where we wanted to make changes to the plan or use different materials. In all, we initiated about six change orders. RedRoots listened to our requests and worked really hard to accommodate. We can't thank the RedRoots team enough. We originally hired Red Roots in 2014 to re-do our front yard, which included a retaining wall, pillars with planters, and a travertine walkway. They did a great job and their craftmanship is amazing. We loved it so much we hired them back in 2016 to do our backyard. We put in an outdoor BBQ area, a pergola, a fireplace, stacked stone retaining walls around and behind our new pool, a travertine patio, a crushed granite walkway, and a firepit. As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for." It may not have been the cheapest quote we received, but we got the look we wanted and we have absolutely no regrets! I've had people tell me it's the most beautiful yard they've ever seen. We love it!! I give them 4 stars only because the communication is not always the best. We don't like not knowing what's happening, why workers aren't at our site on a certain days, etc. so we set up a meeting at the same time every Friday with Memo to walk through the progress and discuss what was going to happen the following week and that worked much better for us. We did a large landscaping project with this company in 2012. Actually us and two other families together chose this company. They haven't written their review but I'm going to save other customers some grief. They had their project manager come out and it started out great - we were excited. It went downhill from there. We literally had to "project manage" and inspect the quality of work. It was confusing after 3 weeks who we needed to contact b/c our project managers kept changing and then we had to contact (Guillermo) Memo directly. The hardscaping they did a decent job but the irrigation was terrible. For almost 3 weeks or more the irrigation lines would bust and they would have to come out and fix it - they claimed our water pressure was too high and all sorts of other excuses. Parts of our lawn grass is dying because irrigation doesnt get to it We complained that we had to check the irrigation and take time out from work for irrigation issues and he got mad at us! And also any change orders, they really try to rip you off!!! We also removed a large tree and they never removed all the roots and try to cover it up but my husband dug it up and asked them to please remove all the remaining tree roots. We still have more landscaping work to do but they are not getting our business. They didn't get 1-star (thought many days they should have) b/c they did replace a few plants that died and we liked Jose. read more

Maybe our project was too small for him, in which case he should have told us that upfront when we explained the project to him before he came out. He also mentioned that he charges a 10% markup on all materials. First project was when we built our house and they did the entire hardscape, some of which consisted of two large driveways, courtyard, pool surround, etc. We have had them come out two more times to tackle large landscape projects for us and we have always been very happy. Red Roots Landscapers, with Memo, as owner, is the best landscaping business I have ever used. I have a large yard and have hired many landscapers over the last 28 years. Red Roots was by far the most professional and has the best craftsmen, not just workers, but craftsmen, I have seen. I had pavers installed for my driveway and patio. The pavers were in a very intricate, unusual design and Memo's workers were able to cut all the pieces needed and fit them together in a seamless mosaic. Red Roots also built a decorative retaining wall and installed a blue stone patio in my backyard. In addition Red Roots did lighting and irrigation work.
