I have to admit that the food is tasty, really homemade flavour, but the wait time is just out of this world, it seems that they are short on staff (kitchen, waitress, etc). It can take almost an hour for a simple eggs with bacon. Also, they have recently changed their menu and I don't believe is fair to increase your prices if you don't get more staff for the kitchen and servers to improve the wait time :( Shame! read more

Went there once several years ago. Ordered a grilled cheese sandwich for something like $6-$7. Pricey for a crappy old diner. Even worse? It was that price for a lonely sandwich. You're reading that right- 2 slices of bread, 1 of processed cheese, on a tiny plate, no fries, salad, or anything on the side. A lonely diner sits on a street corner waiting, as the daytime fades into nighttime, for somebody, anybody, to stop by at least for a little while. The weather-worn exterior doesn't help it, as it struggles to be noticed apart from the excitement and bright lights of nearby Denman Street. People just walk on past, already having satisfied their cravings... they walk on past this lonely diner not far from where hungry people go... not far, yet too far already. One couple did notice, however, and so took a seat inside. The diner was just a bit more content now. Inside, we could hear Michael Buble singing softly, and it would be a proper analogy to say that as far as diners go, this diner was more Michael Buble than Frank Sinatra. The interior decor had a charm of its own, although it definitely was missing a few key items that would give it the proper feel. The lone waitress was friendly, and was nice enough to turn up the heat when she saw that we had switched seats to be away from the window. They also gave me a nice new pile of mayonnaise, when the mayonnaise for my fries that I initially got was exhausted. The food was decent, the service was decent, but the diner still felt lonely. We were in fact the only customers for the entire 30 minutes that we were there (we were there on Sunday evening at around 6:00 p.m.). This is a 4.5 star review. I have heard of this cafe for a long time and finally had a chance to visit it. It is quite easy and straightforward to discover why this cafe has enjoyed success. Allow me to break it down in points form. - In the West End, one of the most characteristic neighborhood in Vancouver. - Friendly and attentive staff, actually have many staff to serve so you don't get forgotten. - Clean and modern environment. - Simple and reasonable priced menu. - Outstanding food. If you are lucky to be in the cute cafe in a sunny day. You will probably stay for a good hour and plus just to enjoy the shineshine. They have really good skinny vanilla latte. Everything is fine, the Eggs Benedict would taste better if they used an English muffin instead of a biscuit. If you love home-made cooking and organic food, this your go to place. The location on the corner of Davies Street in the West End is great as it's near the sea wall. For longest time we would just walk on by. Then one day we noticed that they did a bit of a facelift and it just drew us in. Nice and bright, a little tight on the seating side but nice friendly staff. Meals can take a while but you are getting some quality breakfast made from scratch. Bread is made in store and it really makes all dishes stand out. We fell in love with the BELTCH sandwich, it has some sundried tomato/pesto sauce which is killer. Very cosy little place on the corner of Davie street. It feels a lot more welcoming than other coffee bars on Davie where a quick breakfast is offered. I had 'The works omelette' and mostly appreciated the fresh and perfectly spiced veggies to spice up the eggs. I chose toast over their hash brown option, but immediately regretted that choice when I saw them on my partner's plate. Hash browns here are fresh, roasted patatoes instead of those plastic fried roasties you often get at other places. Even though I much enjoyed their buttered, multigrain toast, which was made fresh, I'll definitely go for hash browns instead! My partner tried out the salmon and avocado bennies. She wasn't a big fan of the hollandaise sauce, which tasted like butter only. She loved the salmon and advocado, but mentioned that the eggs and advocado combination wasn't her favourite even though salmon and advocado or egg salmon was a perfect match. The food is so fresh and flavorful, that it created more interest than a place this size can handle, especially during brunch hours. The service here is quite friendly; I was only in for a quick lunch with a friend so I didn't really have a chance to see if it was as inattentive as other reviewers have stated since we were really just in for some sandwiches. They have a fairly comprehensive menu although it's a little pre-emptive. Certain items are not yet available but the waitress assured us that they would be on the menu as of next week - perhaps a seasonal menu change? My friend opted for the special of BLT + soup and I had just a sandwich. Her portion was quite decent, with the special being about $11. I was a little disappointed with the presentation of my sandwich as it was literally just a sandwich, no pickle or anything on the side for $9. The sandwich itself tasted good, so I have no complaints there. I saw other diners enjoying the all-day breakfast, which according to my coworkers is what they are also very well known for, so I may have to venture back to give it a try. read more

Red Umbrella is a lovely little french café perfect for breakfast or brunch. Their food is amazing, and they cook eggs perfectly, I cannot recommend it enough. Only downsides are the wait times (that can go up to 40 minutes, so if you're gonna go, dont wait until you're hungry) and the size of the place, which seems rather cluttered. During summer you can eat outside, but in winter and rainy days the space is severely limited. The staff is also super kind and nice. My girlfriend wants me to add that their cheesecake is amazing. read more

The bright and airy room with big windows was what caught our attention when walking down the street. There's also some seating outside, perfect to enjoy a bit of sun and a drink, but that Sunday was a bit too cold for that and we wanted to sit down for a light lunch. There was a special on for $9, soup and chicken pot pie, but instead we went for two of their sandwiches on the menu, and we didn't regret it a bit! In the West End area this isn't our go-to brunch place but it is among the cheapest and closer to us than the others, so we come once in a blue moon. It isn't the best, but usually cheaper than the rest. Went in on Pride day, turns out they took off their regular menu and jacked up their prices. No wonder the place was only half full. Word must have got out? My strawberry banana smoothie was sickly sweet, like something from McDonalds. Definitely didn't taste like there was any fresh fruit in there... When I go out for brunch, I'm expecting better than what I make at home.. The breakfast we had was extremely greasy. Which would have been fine for like 5.99 but not 11.99! The only breakfast place in Vancouver I am eager to go to. The fact that it's a stone throw away from home makes me a regular. I love that you can customise your breakfast. I always get - scrambled eggs: 5/5 they're creamy, not eggy and not at all greasy - sourdough toast: 5/5 homemade and heavenly - hash browns: 5/5 perfectly crisped - bavarian sausage: 5/5 - grilled seasonal vegetables: 5/5 amazing I believe they have the best London Fog in all Vancouver and I also love their mocha (if you don't like your mochas sweet at all this is the place to go). Also, their tea is great. It's tea bags but a higher quality of tea bags. Definitely some of the better tea I've had from a non-asian food joint. People have criticized their service but it's good enough for me. The place is always packed and there are occasional mistakes the servers might make but in general I've always felt like they make a consistent effort to provide good service. Was looking for a brunch/lunch spot and came across this diner on our way to the seawall. Arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday, was comfortably busy but not packed or full. Checkered tablecloths, mismatched homey decor. Large range of menu items starting from very affordable prices. Can order many items a la carte as well. Breakfast starts at $6, but you can order a la carte items (ie. pancakes, french toast) for $3. (Blueberries +$1 - watch out, it's a tiny portion). Eggs Benedict start at $9. Do not order the shrimp and avocado. The avocado was grey, mushy and well beyond it's time. I had some difficulty finding the shrimp. At last I found the 5 shrimp embedded in the grey avocado mush. I'm actually giving this place a bad review due to myself experience, even though I didn't eat anything. I went there for brunch late Sunday, and put my name down on the wait list (which was considerable). Things were going along well, till we witnessed mistreatment of customers. A group of 4 or 5 had been waiting for a while. When they asked for an update on their table, they were informed their name wasn't even on the list Then a debate started with this waitress (brunette with French accent). After some debate, it became clear to me that their name wasn't there. It seems they expected her to put their name down, while she expected them to do so. But this lady kept insisting on the fact that their name wasn't there, not sure why. Both sides became heated trying to win a pointless argument about their early interaction. Some observations: - this is a tiny place. I imagine that she remembered this group coming in. If for some reason their name is not put down, what's the big deal? Of course they got there to eat, and must've thought their name was put down. - even if she didn't remember them, why fight so much. She could just say "clearly we miscommunicated" and give them the next table. I just say, they were the only later group waiting now.... So it made no difference! The restaurant lady got upset and stormed into the restaurant. Then two other waitresses came out, were very polite and conciliatory. And I'm thinking to myself "finally someone good with customers, this must be the manager". Then the group find out that the first lady being quite ride was the manger! They tell the waitress that this woman is the rudest manager they've seen. They go back in and then the manager comes out for blood! She's super angry and ride to them. Questions them on what they've been saying to their staff, and repeating "your name isn't down so I don't care". She finishes off sending them away and warning them to never come back! They asked her where it seemed ok to treat customers that way, to which she replied "we're outside of the restaurant", as they were outside by the door. There were multiple people waiting outside. Of course they left. I was starving, the food looked great. But I'd feel terrible to eat there after this. The place still had a line so it felt like they could "get away with mistreating some customers". We actually decided to leave, and ended up not finding a nearly as good brunch spot. No regrets. The manager might have a history with this group, but nothing excuses this behavior. And given her aggressive behaviour, I'm thinking someone might show up here to push me to remove this review. read more

My eggs were cooked over medium as requested, the bacon was crisp, the sausage (I added the Bavarian sausage) was prepared by scoring the casing thus keeping it from curling or splitting. I really loved the sandwich and the soup was delicious . It has a hint of cilantro and citrus . The BLT had so much bacon , and instead of lettuce they used spinach which made it even mor flavorful. My partner had the omelette and he enjoyed it very much. This place is quiant & cozy. Very few tables, nice relaxing music playing. Friendly waitress. Service was extremely fast! Coffee was wonderful, refilling your cup immediately. We ordered the buttermilk pancakes. I love pancakes & this is my go to at every breakfast joint. These were the best I've had. So fluffy, practically melt on your mouth. My husband ordered the veggie omelet. Again, so fluffy I don't know how they did it??! And the sourdough, perfectly done with a little zip as sourdough should be. There are some harsh critiques I've seen regarding Red umbrella cafe, my experience was great. Pleasant vibe, delicious food and staff who were attentive but not up your nostrils. About an 45 mins to an hour afterwards I got a really crampy stomach - nothing to head to the ER about but I'm a little concerned the delicious food wasn't prepared safely? It's not enough to stop me from giving them another try as it was a pleasant experience nonetheless. My rating would be higher, but the cramps pulled down the score. Went to this cafe on a whim and was not disappointed with the food or service. The Classic Breakfast was tasty, the lemon bar from the pastery counter was fresh and delicious, and the cappuccino was easily one of the best I've had. Service was prompt and polite. Only downside was that the tables are set pretty close together. read more
