Big points for being the only ones in Staunton that were open on a Tuesday afternoon! Mama and I each got a flight and we were both happy with the variety available and quality of the product. I had a DIPA, Breakfast Stout, Saison, and a Brown Ale. Three of the four made me want to indulge in a full pint. They have a generous amount of outdoor seating that is super dog friendly. There is a food truck around the corner with similar hours although we didn't check that place out. My husband and I stopped by here on our way back from visiting family. I had the 221B Baker Brown and it was good! It had a nice smooth taste and wasn't bitter. My husband got the breakfast stout, and it was really good too! We sat out back and enjoyed the nice weather on a Sunday around lunchtime. Went to the New Years Eve event they had. It was standing room only. Asked for a couple of soft drinks and was told we had to purchase them from the vending machine in the back. The machine would not read any of the credit cards. The "band" was EDM. I can't say if they were good or not, but there was exactly one person dancing. We were out of there in about 10 minutes time and will not be returning or recommending. read more

This brewery was very well done and we loved it. During out trip we had very nice weather so we were able to take advantage of their outdoor patio. Some of the regulars stopped in for lunch - they don't serve food but there is a food truck next door everyone seemed to enjoy. I believe it was a Thai/Asian truck, and the menu looked diverse and affordable. The main room where the beer is poured was well done as well. Overhead TVs were placed appropriately for sports, didn't feel cramped at all, and they had plenty of seating for a busy "shift" while we were there. We asked the server (Brooke) that day (11/2) about the history of the building. It was, at one time, home to a family and a business man. The safe still remains in the building you can still see on the way to the (clean) restrooms. My wife doesn't enjoy beer as I do but based on the lighter beverages they do offer, found something for her she enjoyed. We did stop here on our way back to SW VA, and had just another enjoyable visit. We liked this place a lot, and when we travel back to Staunton, this place will be on the list. read more

We were here twice over the weekend. Arrived around 8:30pm or so on Friday night and the place was lively and fun. Everyone was enjoying the Boxcar Speakeasy (trio that night) performance. We came back on Saturday around 6:00pm for about an hour and relaxed in the chill atmosphere. We left for a dinner reservation right as the Karaoke was starting up which looked like it was going to be a good time. Redbeard served as a nice and central spot to decompress after walking around Staunton all day as a first-time visitor. It's located downtown and the facade is pretty cool. Inside, it's dark and smelled like they were brewing that day. I noticed many of the customers were being greeted by name, so it seems like a hole-in-the-wall brewery aimed at its neighbors. It's not a name I had ever heard of before my visit, and I've been to 175 breweries in the last few years. You can order food here, but I didn't. I appreciate that they offer 5-ounce pours, so I selected the brown, the saison, and the mango guava lactose gose. The brown was nice and refreshing; really approachable all around. I didn't mind the saison, but it didn't have the funky farmhouse character you'd expect from the style. The gose was surprisingly my favorite. I love sours, but I was hesitant about the idea of mixing lactose with the flavor profile, but it really did mellow it out well. Guava is usually pretty potent, but the addition of lactose would make it more inviting to the casual drinker. One thing I noticed was that the bartender asked and was genuinely curious what I thought about each of the three pours. I appreciate that level of service and dedication to quality beer formation. I probably won't be back since I live in Richmond, but it was a nice place to check out and spend some time. read more

We stopped because I needed somewhere to hang out while my hubby took a work call. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. He got a water bowl and a treat for our furbaby while we made drinks decisions. For lost of their beers, you may pick a 5oz draft that ranges from $2.50 to $3.50, a 10 oz draft, which runs from $4 to $5.75, or a 16 oz. ranges from $5 to $8.50. My hubby picked the Graf, a collaboration with Ciders from Mars that created a lovely beer with a hint of cider. I chose three blueberry wheat ale, pennyroyal pale, and two moons. My favorite was the blueberry wheat, a hint of blueberry in a smooth, light beer. I would drink them all again and all summer long. There was a massive storm that struck, so we had some more. Next, we tried the summer lager and saison. The summer lager would've been perfect for floating down the river in a tube, but not as good as the blueberry wheat ale. read more

I am not a beer snob. I enjoy microbreweries, but I am nowhere an aficionado. I just know what I like. I have attended a conference in Staunton, VA for eleven years, now. I discovered Redbeard through the recommendation of another person who attends the same conference. My unfortunate experience is that I have only 2 years of experience with Redbeard. In 2022, I fell in love with a cider-type microbrew. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased quite a few to bring home with me after the conference. I was fully hoping to enjoy the same brew this year when I returned. I was so sad when I did not see it on the menu. I didn't ask about it because I couldn't remember the name of the brew. So, saddened, I tried another microbrew. I stretched my tastes a little and tried the Elijah Craig - '23 Moriarty. HOLY COW!!!! It is an imperial stout aged six months in Elijah Craig bourbon barrels. It is so stinking smooth!! At first taste, there is just a touch of bitterness of the stout that is quickly overtaken by the sweetness of the bourbon. It finishes with the warmth of the bourbon and the full flavor of the stout. It is I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E! I, once again, stopped at Redbeard on my way back home to purchase a couple of bottles to bring home with me. The staff at Redbeard are so welcoming. They help you decide on a brew. They answer your questions. They will give you not just a suggestion of what to try but will share with you what their favorite brews are. Redbeard has theme nights like trivia, karaoke, and game nights. I have not participated in any of these. I just enjoy the outside patio with my conference buddy. We sit, enjoy our choice of brews, and try to solve the world's problems. If we are successful in this endeavor, we will definitely share credit with the Redbeard Brewing Company. Nice little tap room in this cool old school railroad era downtown. The open at noon, which is cool. Beers are great. The best was the seagulls & stank double ipa. Great citrus flavors in the hazyish ipa. The porter was also fabulous. Brewed in the classic english style. Smooth and toasty malt. Everything was balanced and not too much abv. Service was great. My hubby and I have been to quite a few breweries and we always like trying the different craft beers. VA is becoming a beer hot spot with breweries popping up everywhere, so it's fun to visit as many as we can! I want to like them all, but once in awhile you run across a brewery that isn't even trying. This brewery was pretty basic. It was dark, kinda gloomy and unkempt. The tables were sticky and rickety. Void of ambiance, this place looked like it was just thrown together. We tried a couple beers, we weren't too impressed, and we left rather quickly. This is a nice little brewery right in the heart of downtown Staunton. There's an outdoor area to sit at and then inside of course. On the weekends they have comedy shows too at night which is cool. If you're anywhere near Staunton, VA, and you are interested in the *quality* of the beer, this is where you need to go. The atmosphere is comfortable but not fancy or pretentious. They generally have events several nights a week (live music, bingo or trivia, karaoke, etc.) and it's a community meeting place. There's no on-site restaurant, but it is within walking and/or delivery range of many local restaurants. But it's about the beer, people. There is a serious variety on tap; check on Untappd or the Redbeard website for an up-to-date list. It's not "all IPAs," and with a dozen (plus) taps, there are usually options from "your standard beer-flavored beer" right on up to beer nerd selections. Check out the Moriarty (their seasonal BBA stout) in the fall, if you're into that kind of thing. Bonus: the best cidery in Staunton is right across the street. read more

Came on a Thursday and it was absolutely dead. My family and I were almost the only ones there. Still, we were told that there are no kids allowed after 9. That rule is fine in spirit, but when I wanted to order a second beer at 8:45, I asked whether an 9:15 departure might be acceptable. I was told there is no flexibility. Despite trying to have a human conversation, the bartender gave a smug and abrupt "I'll close you out, then," end to our conversation. I want to emphasize -- the place was basically empty. We walked up and over and found a place that you would expect to be far more pretentious, but that welcomed us and redeemed our initially disappointing experience in Staunton. We live in the Valley so we always stop in at Redbeard when we're in Downtown Staunton. However, today was our last time. This is the second time that we experienced rude service. We frequently go to breweries so that my husband can drink good beer and we can watch sports. Last year we tried to go to Redbeard, but they wouldn't let me in with a cup of coffee - Since when can you not bring your own food/drink into a brewery that doesn't serve food? Today we wandered in and were happy to see the Steelers game on TV. We both ordered a beer and sat in front of the TV with a few other tables who were watching the game. A while later a girl came in and requested the Cowboys game. Channel was changed - no apology, no one asked us if we were watching the TV. Bartender said it was their policy to show NFC East games. We settled our tab and left. Good for them that they get enough business that they can pick and choose which customers they want to accommodate.
